I am not sure how to take Westneat’s column here…. It has the ring of faint praise to it somehow but I can’t quite put my finger on why. Does anyone else read this as a bit condescending towards Fox and the entire generation of the ’60’s?
Nindid-I agree. I wonder why Fox participated in this article. What business is it of Westneat, or Seattle Times readers, that Fox came into a little money or where he got the money to buy his home. I know casually and admire Fox. I was in the audience a few years ago when the ACLU gave him an award. And I’m not the slightest bit interested in this story.

By bringing it down to a personal level, we see the overarching GOP crackup that is to come. This is the level of ‘everyman’ asking ‘what’s in it for me?’ It addresses the constant ‘self made man’ whine re ‘I got mine, screw you’ attitude that St. Ronnie made the centerpiece of domestic policy that even Clinton, in his political cowardice, bowed to.
Perhaps we can truly have a conversation on this question and derail the GOP hijacking of this issue. I, for one, applaud the article.
