Friday Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Friday, 4/1/22, 7:56 am

Oh hey, Governor Inslee signed the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women’s and People’s Alert law. I suppose that we all knew this would happen when it passed both Houses of the Legislature unanimously. Still, it’s good that it’s official. I hope that it helps.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you aren’t yet.

Y’all knew it was going to turn out like this, didn’t y’all?

Official review of Trump phone logs from January 6 finds record is complete

According to multiple sources familiar with Trump’s phone behavior and the White House switchboard records, the January 6 log reflects Trump’s typical phone habits. He mainly placed calls through the switchboard when he was in the residence but rarely used it when he was in the Oval Office. The fact the log does not show calls on January 6, 2021, from the Oval Office is not unusual, said the sources, because Trump typically had staff either place calls directly for him on landlines or cell phones. Those calls would not be noted on the switchboard log.
The six pages of White House switchboard logs for January 6, 2021, are complete based on an official review of White House records, according to a source familiar with the matter. There are no missing pages and the seven-hour gap is likely explained by use of White House landlines, White House cell phones and personal cell phones that do not go through the switchboard.
    …
Trump used the switchboard more often when he was in the private residence, according to multiple sources. But when he was in the Oval Office, the former President would often direct aides sitting outside his office to get certain lawmakers or allTrump used the switchboard more often when he was in the private residence, according to multiple sources. To make matters worse, the owner of the Penis YLB Would Most Love To Fellate did the same thing:

A former White House staffer who served in the Obama administration told CNN that if then-President Barrack Obama wanted to make a call to someone from the Oval Office, he would normally ask an aide seated nearby to dial the person. The aide would then call the number and hit transfer to connect the caller to the President.
That call would not go through the White House switchboard and therefore would not be recorded on the White House switchboard log, the former staffer said.

QoS McHillbilly certainly knew it would turn out this way, and yet he did his shrill impersonation of a freshman Democrat on the night of November 8, 2016 over the whole thing.

    It is a nothingburger.

Just think how much that driver already saved in 2020 and 2021 with all of that “free” money handed out by the federal government. So really, part of that EV has already been paid for.

Court Upholds Bakery’s $32 Million Victory against Oberlin College over False Racism Accusations

An Ohio appeals court has upheld a ruling that awarded more than $30 million to a bakery that accused Oberlin College of damaging its business and libeling it with false accusations of racism.

A three-judge panel on the Ninth District Court of Appeals issued a unanimous decision to uphold a 2019 ruling by Lorain County Judge John Miraldi, who initially awarded the bakery more than $40 million in punitive and compensatory damages, Cleveland.com reported.
    …
Gibson’s Bakery sued the college in 2017, accusing the school and one of its administrators of hurting its business and libeling it over an incident in which the son of the bakery owner stopped three black Oberlin College students, one of whom was stealing wine bottles from the store, in November 2016.

Students from the school protested the bakery after the arrest, handing out fliers outside the shop telling patrons to shop elsewhere. The fliers also accused the Gibsons of having a long history of racial profiling, citing the November 2016 incident, according to Legal Insurrection. Witnesses who testified at the trial said Oberlin College Dean of Students Meredith Raimondo participated in the protests, handing out stacks of fliers for others to distribute.

    https://news.yahoo.com/court-upholds-bakery-32-million-141320346.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJS1GReKZtIgNQHd3A2lFY6o2rxYIyaLy9Yergpp4hj9wI6f2BTifqp9bwuSXow2t629zrtuyuEkx5FlW-095la4FJq_0F0OCz9OsL7pL6tlZWmmThqPYGhwz9sgnY3aU6tBsM6rxt13-jTBYtaPVUXcZY31LrwIPJYzvBLa2y1w

For those wondering, here is the flyer she handed out.

At trial, Oberlin College attempted to keep out police records pertaining to theft arrests at the bakery. Those records indicate that 80% of the arrests were of white students, and only 15% of those arrested were black.

This will be very, very painful to Oberlin. Oberlin fucked around and found out.

I guess it wouldn’t be a Friday without a shirtless, naked, face-painted end zone dance by a degenerate fool.

The call to Mike Lee’s cell phone came from a White House switchboard phone and is missing from both records.

Sen. Lee’s cell phone records have been produced showing the incoming call with identifying toll data.

    https://apnews.com/article/mike-lee-trump-misdialed-fact-check-3165726e16c990596218f61a88205304

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/mar/30/trump-used-white-house-phone-call-capitol-attack-jan-6-not-official-log

CNN’s reporting is missing a lot of granular detail about how phones in the White House work. If aides placed calls using cell phones they would not appear in switchboard logs. But the incoming call to Lee was identified as a White House call originating from the White House PBX identified as 202-395-0000. Such a call can be direct dialed without the use of a White House operator. But it would still appear in the logs.

It’s possible that CNN and many other modern reporters are really not terribly familiar with landline phone systems, particularly private business exchange systems. And so they are probably confusing use of a “switchboard” operator to place a call, with direct dialing from an extension on the PBX. In a modern system there is no “switchboard”. And “switchboard operators” do not sit in a room connecting calls like you see in early episodes of Mad Men. It’s all automated. But in a place like the White House there are still operators paid to sit and do nothing except place calls for people deemed too important to place their own phone calls. It’s a convenience, and a time saver. And it’s not uncommon. But whether a call is dialed by an “operator” or by a pale, weedy stooge in an outer office, if it goes through the PBX it still gets logged. Automatically.

It’s still possible that there is a less-than-criminal explanation for the missing records. And CNN is not alone in getting some of the reporting details wrong. But this is what criminal investigations are for. Whatever the reason for the missing records, and however the media speculates and misreports on those reasons, the real point is that some kind of investigation will be needed to determine if any crimes were committed.

I perceive one of Garland’s most important objectives as AG is to remove the stain of partisanship from the department left by the last two Republican administrations. If I were a betting man I’d bet he’ll wait for more evidence to emerge about the communications between the White House and the riot organizers, and if it warrants it he’ll appoint a special counsel and remove it from the rest of the J6 investigations.

There’s even a good chance there could be more than one special counsel before this is over. But it would still have to be over more than just missing phone records.

Seeing as how the low IQ dumbfuck and his army of 8,000 Pro-Putin hashtags are all Russian agents themselves, looking at this through the lens of treason, it makes perfect sense that the low IQ dumbfuck would love him some Tulsi.

Russia’s most prominent state propagandist apparently agrees that Tulsi Gabbard is a Russian agent

This will be very, very painful to Oberlin.

I just checked. The university has over a billion under management. Thirty two million is about how much they earn in a quarter. I’m sure they’d rather spend the money differently. and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see the award later reduced upon appeal, but the fact is that thirty seconds of simple checking would have shown that the university can afford to pay this award in full, even if they don’t carry insurance. But I would assume they do. These institutions often belong to liability pools with similar private colleges and universities.

Not making light. Worst possible timing, when resident program private schools are in their worst possible financial shape in a long time. But it’s not as if this forces them to reduce enrollment or cut academic programs. Perhaps only two kinds of organic soy chai in the food court and a one-star Michelin chef. Maybe put the semester in Courchevel program on hold for a few years.
For some Oberlin students those are devastating impacts.

But arguing that this is “really, really painful” for the institution is just more idiotic wishcasting. Were that true they would have settled years ago.

We are rapidly on our way to realizing the movie “Idiocracy” in real life.

With the likes of Cawthorn, MTG, Gaetz, Moore, and now Walker, the GOP team is full of social media influencers that have double-digit IQs at best. Even Nunes had the brains to get out rather than be with the group.

Speaking of Nunes, how is that roll-out of Trump’s new TRUTH social going? Any bets on how long before Trump turns on Nunes?

Of course, Fox helped elevate this numbskull to wingnut stardom, and potentially public office, and Fox is thoroughly irresponsible and uncivic. The solution isn’t intelligent voters; we have enough of those. We need them to turn out, in every election, to keep people like this out of elective offices.

Yes, I know it isn’t going anywhere fast.

How hard is it? I mean it isn’t rocket science to put a bunch of servers together and whip up a blog with the ability to allow end users to post and repost. They are even using open-source software to design the site (mastodon).

The template is already out there (Twitter), the business model is simple (get rubes to read, post, click), all the hard work is done for them already.

It just goes to show the level of incompetence Republicans have. Their skill set is grift, not high tech and technical work.

And people want these folks to run a country? Sweet baby Jeebus, we are fucked if they get in control.
