    The Presidential Debate this time was interesting. Unlike early this year, and 4 years ago, wasn’t saying this debate was 90 minutes of my life I will never get back.

    One of the routes Community Transit discontinued was the 422 Stanwood. It had two AM trips to Seattle, 2 PM trips to Stanwood. I was looking at the block schedule (which is all trips scheduled for that vehicle while it is out on the road), each bus only did one trip during that block, 2 hours, 10 minutes, one way. Amtrak Cascades makes Seattle-Stanwood in 1 hour, 20 minutes. Unfortunately, Stanwood Station is ineligible for the special program Sound Transit pass holders can use with Amtrak Cascades, only available at 3 shared stations.

    Let’s talk about Ohio’s Springfield, but not about cats, dogs, ducks, or geese.

    Let’s talk about how 12-15,000 Haitian refugees were allowed to congregate in a midwest town of only 58,000 people, within a timeframe of only about 2-2.5 years or so.

    It happened because Springfield’s voters elected a mayor who wanted this.

    Springfield’s previous mayor held the job for all but four years of the timeframe 1990-2023 while he was a professor in a liberal arts college. He was into social ethics, and wrote this book:

    I don’t really imagine that Kimberly Newton of Springfield Ohio thought twice about it before casually sharing with her neighbor her imaginary fable accusing her Haitian neighbors in her town of hunting and eating the town’s pets.     Who really knows how far Ms. Lee expected her neighbor’s deeply racist slur to go? It was not anonymous. So she clearly had no qualms with being personally connected directly to that racist bullshit. But I suppose she imagined this casual little bit of deadly racist blood libel would stay within her community of like-minded white supremacist garbage. But context is also important here.

    By the time she posted, white supremacist and neo-Nazi gangs, inspired by Senator J.D.Vance, had already descended on her community marching, recruiting, staging demonstrations, and disrupting public government meetings to complain about and threaten the local community of legal immigrants from Haiti granted asylum. And they had already enjoyed some significant success in drawing attention among the ecosystem of extremist alt-Right and MAGA media and professional trolls, including a few employed at the time by a Russian espionage agency.

    So it can hardly be claimed that Ms. Newton or Ms. Lee were unwitting or in any way innocent of malicious and darkly racist intent.

    And yet, and in a way I think might help white people see more clearly how systemic and cultural racism permeates how we understand our world, the mainstream media bothering to report on this show absolutely no interest in exploring their motivation for launching this racist libel targeting their non-white neighbors. And the media are surprisingly (not surprisingly) eager to accept and offer credibility to Ms Newton’s and Ms. Lee’s increasingly awkward efforts to distance themselves from their own deadly lies.

    I think this reluctance to face the motivational origins of this sort of very dark racism is shared by many of us because in it we see ourselves. And some of us, probably most of us, would prefer to avoid looking at that part of ourselves. But that’s what makes it important that we do so.

    I’ll be happy to.

    Each state may design it’s own election ballots and set whatever requirements it sees fit within the scope and authority granted under the federal and state constitutions. Most states impose some kind of signature requirement at the time of voting as a means of ensuring that the person representing themselves as the registered voter is indeed that person. The signature is matched against the signature on file. Since you sound like a NY state in-person voter this is probably very familiar to you. You arrive at your designated polling place and you are directed by a poll worker to sign a log corresponding to your legal name and registration address. In the case of mail ballots there is often a unique serial number computer printed on each ballot and on each ballot envelope to match with the registered voter. And as a way to validate that the person preparing and submitting the ballot is the registered voter for that unique ballot there is a signature line, often on the ballot envelope to avoid spoiling of the ballot enclosed. Some states also include a place for the date along side the signature to indicate when the ballot envelope was signed by the voter. It has nothing at all to do with when the ballot was mailed by the voter or received by the county elections administrator.

    The issue Scotty P is concern trolling about is being analyzed in terms of the Pennsylvania state constitution and laws and whatever guarantees it provides to its citizens who are legally entitled to vote. I’m not familiar with the specific guarantees. But it sounds like the lower court analysis found that a “wrong” date (e.g. a year other than the current year) or a blank date could not be considered invalidating if the ballot was otherwise valid. And that would be expected in most cases with most state constitutions.

    Scotty P has pointed out by way of a concern troll that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has reversed the lower court on a jurisidictional issue – the original cases challenging the state law about the date requirement was filed in two county court jurisdictions on what the high court has concluded is a statewide matter affecting all voters in Pennsylvania.
    Scotty P then went on to suggest that if the original complaint were to be refiled statewide and granted an emergency review this might be some kind of imaginary “unfairness” since some other fucking stupid troll lawsuit from the MAGA Meth Head Stop the Steal lawsuits filed by drug addicted alcoholic felons like Rudy Giuliani, Mike Lindell, and Jenna Ellis were denied review after missing deadlines because they were too busy snorting drugs, recovering from hangovers, and soiling and groping themselves in between appearances of Tucker Carlson.

    His sense of unfairness is rendered silly and imaginary by a fundamental legal principle in common law called “laches”. In brief laches asserts that a complaining party is obligated to bring their complaint in a timely manner and may not “sleep on their rights” when doing so may result in the underlying circumstances or issues being contested changing.

    In the case of the Pennsylvania ballot design laws the plaintiff was probably acting in good faith when they originally filed in the two counties where they had identified standing and since the current ruling from the state supreme court did not exist at that time. So laches would not apply.

    Scotty P of course did not know any of this when he posted his two weak posts early today. Nor did he even care. He was simply hoping to sow some phony sense of “injustice” ahead of what will presumably be a successful challenge to an unjust law. If the state produces the mail ballots and is responsible for the timing of their delivery to the voters, and as long as the ballot is received or post marked within whatever legal requirements are set by state law, then what date a voter hand writes on their ballot envelope is not relevant to a decision to disenfranchise that voter.

    This kind of effort to protray himself, Trump, MAGA, and Republicans in general as some kind of “victims” of “leftist hypocrisy and injustice” is a tired, phony, and ridiculous performance art that Scotty P frequently engages in on these pages. You should not fall for it, Dude. Ever.

    The G line is ok, it was supposed to go from 1st Ave to Madison Park but was cut back to Madison Valley. Also was supposed to be a trolleybus, but New Flyer claimed they could not do a trolleybus with left hand doors and still have a motor powerful enough to get up the hill.(I think the buses are Rear wheel drive) Noticed at the station closest to O’Dea, they finally got something built on the Cabrini Hospital grounds. They demolished that when I was going to O’Dea.

    Unfortunately New Flyer has a monopoly on articulated buses across all propulsion options. Battery buses,there is an option, and I wished Sound Transit didn’t buy from that company. BYD is Chinese.

    Madison is a tough grade, it was once a Cable Car route from Downtown to Madison Park, but later in the streetcar era, The Cable Car was cut back to roughly 23rd, and a Pike/Pine streetcar route handled Madison Park, that grade was 12%.

    The G replaces the 12-Interlaken Park trolley, but as part of the changes, rt3 is taking over the suspended 47-Summit Trolley route. The 2 and 13 are supposed to resume trolley operations, after a new stretch of connecting wires are erected. Line crews have been told no rush on that. Supposedly lifts in the garage at Atlantic are being replaced, right now 2 and 13 are assigned out of Ryerson.

    News Center 7 first reported that Kettering Health Springfield went into lockdown this morning after receiving information regarding a bomb threat. Now, Mercy Health-Springfield Regional Medical Center officials say they also received reports of a bomb threat Saturday morning and were forced into lockdown.

    As I mentioned yesterday, one of my main issues with the G Line was the vehicle choice. Turns out it wasn’t New Flyer refusing to modify the XT60 for this line, it was that they said it wasn’t worth it for 13 vehicles. Metro and Seattle missed an opportunity to expand the fleet, RapidRide R, which would upgrade Rt7 to Rapid Ride standards, would have required more than 20. Move Seattle originally proposed to upgrade the route Seattle Transit didn’t want but after it was successful, wondered why they opposed it, the 48, to RapidRide. Also plans for electrification of the 48, in fact, one preliminary hurdle has been cleared. Since power lines are routed on side streets to the west and east of 23rd, no utility poles to support the overhead wires in the gaps between existing routes. New poles that don’t have any wires yet have already been in place. Right now, the city and Metro are waiting for the Montlake Lid to be finished. Could operate them in battery mode if tgey wire up the layover spots at Mt Bajer TC.
