The Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally meets tonight (and every Tuesday), 8PM at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E.
Had a busy holiday visiting with family? Need a drink to recover? Come join us for some hoppy beer and hopped up political schmoozing.
Not in Seattle? Washington liberals will also be drinking tonight in the Tri-Cities, and a full listing of Washington’s 11 Drinking Liberally chapters is available here.
UPDATE:
Oops. Turns out the Montlake Ale House is closed tonight. So no Drinking Liberally tonight. Oh man… I’m getting the DL DT’s.

HA’s peripatetic private eye, Richard Pope, fingered “FullContactPolitics” as erstwhile GOP legislative candidate Mark Griswold. Hard to believe this fucking jihadist got 15% of the vote! What were those Republicans thinking when they voted for this idiot who thinks terror attacks on innocent airline passengers is a good campaign strategy for Republicans?

RR at 2: Yea, it was hilarious reading some of the comments, especially from Conrad Burns. He was incredibly lucky, after all his gaffs, to get as close as he did. And yet he wants to blame the advertising strategy for his loss.
Personally, I think any advertising for Conrad Burns only reminded voters what an idiot he was. Perhaps the best strategy was NOT to advertise.
As for the rest of the Republicans, its been interesting to see them change their tune over the past few weeks. First it was “It was Iraq and Rumsfield”. Then it was “we need to return to core conservative values”. Now it is “Dole had a lousy advertising strategy”. By next month, I expect to hear denials that they lost the elections at all (such as MTR’s comments on the previous thread).
A strong base in reality has never been the Republican strong suit in recent years.
rhp6033 spews:
RR at 5: Preachers have to pay income taxes like everybody else. They do, however, get a liberal non-taxed “parsonage allowance”, which reduces their taxable income considerably.
The examples recently cited are simply an abuse of the non-profit corporations which allow tax deductions for contributors. I would suggest that the IRS do a few audits, and if the “perks” are out of line, then non-profit status for the corporation can be revoked. That would pretty much dry up much of their revenue. Of course, I doubt that’s going to happen while Bush is in the White House, as some of these preachers are his most ardent supporters, and they can deliver both votes and money to the Republican cause.
One of the problems is that the preachers like to point out that their compensation is not out of line with that given to CEOs of companies of comparable size (in terms of revenue). Therefore they can claim that their perks are “reasonable”. That gets us back to the round-robin of discussing what are reasonable perks, salries, and bonuses for corporate executives.
Preachers also sometimes justify the aircraft purchases based upon the need for frequent travel, sometimes to third-world countries. But taking into account the considerable operating costs of an aircraft, I don’t see any reason why they would need more than one, under any circumstances.

MTR’s Moonbat Rules for tax reform:
1) Don’t call it a tax. Be sure to call it an “investment”.
2) Be sure to say that the tax structure will be “fair”.
3) Make sure that it’s a blend of both sales tax and income tax that is “revenue neutral.”
4) Give iron clad assurances that the rates will NEVER creep up; that’s it’s only to stablize gummint revenue. Taxes would only be raised in an emergency such as building pro sports stadiums.
5) Make mention of the necessity for the winners of life’s lottery to “give back.”
You should call your organization something like “Citizens for Public Investment Fairness.”
Libertarian spews:
The only true “fair” income tax is a single flat-rate tax. People tend to confuse the word “fair” with “favorable.” A tax is only “fair” (in their minds) if it’s “favorable” to whomever they’re supporting and aligned with.

As a preacher’s kid, I remember the annual trauma when the church council would take up the issue of my father’s compensation. Parishioners who never showed for church had no problem weighing in on the issue. Invariably, their opinion was that a “man of God,” to show true fealty to the Gospel, should be prepared to live on the charity of those in his flock–a parsonage, gifts of food, etc. Then, there were those who felt that a person who was always on call and had the equivalent of a Ph.D. should be paid enough to pay his bills. With that background, I find the compensation that some pastors of today receive to be mindboggling and downright wrong. The excessiveness of some pastors’ pay makes a strong case for repealing some of the tax advantages that churches have–for instance, the exemption from real property taxes. Such repeal creates some First Amendment tension, but I’m not sure that it’s not the way to go.

rhp6033 spews:
Libertarian at 10: I stay away from using “fair” when talking about tax policy. It’s a meaningless term in that context.
The only purpose of taxes are to raise revenue to fund the government. How that is accomplished is a competition between competing interest groups. Currently, those that have the most money are winning that competition, as evidenced by Bush’s tax breaks for those earning the most money. That also explains why wages earned “by the sweat of the brow” are the most highly taxed forms of income.
That’s also why the wingnuts are so off-base when they argue that taxation of estates or corporate dividends is not “fair” because it is “double taxation”. So what? So is the sale tax – the income is taxed when you receive it, and again when you spend it!
So as Roland Hjorth used to say, “Don’t get tangled up trying to make it logical, or fair. Its not. Its the tax code, and it’s designed to raise revenue.”
Now, the wingnuts have a double motive when they attack taxes. First, of course, they want someone else to pay them, not themselves. But also, they want to “starve” the government, so it will be forced to dismantle the safety net created during the last 2/3 of the 20th century. Why they want to do this is open to considerable discussion, of course Roger Rabbit on this forum takes the “cheap labor” position that they want to keep workers desperate and ameniable to their bosses demands.
So, all those things being considered, why should we not collect the greater portion of our taxes from those who are in a better position to pay them? Why should not those who receive the most benefits from our political and economic system give back proportionately a greater share of the funds to keep that system intact?
YOS LIB BRO spews:
LIBERTARIAN: A FLAT TAX WILL NEVER WORK. IT’S NOT REVENUE NEUTRAL. IF YOU WANT IT REVENUE NEUTRAL IT’S TOTALLY UNFAIR. YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT TAKING OVER 20 PERCENT OF A MIDDLE CLASS PERSON’S INCOME.
A PROGRESSIVE TAX IS THE FAIREST TAX. THE RICH AND CORPORATIONS HAVE MORE TO DEFEND SO THEY WARRANT A HIGHER RATE. A PROGRESSIVE TAX DIDN’T STOP THE ECONOMIC BOOM AFTER WORLD WAR TWO. YOU DON’T HAVE TO TAX AT NINETY PERCENT. A RATE OF FIFTY PERCENT COMBINED LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL IS PROBABLY FAIR ENOUGH FOR THE TOP BRACKET. IF RICH PEOPLE OBJECT TO THE RATE THEN AGITATE FOR MORE EFFICIENT GOVERNMENT. THE DOD CAN’T PASS A GAO AUDIT. THAT’S A SCANDAL.
rhp6033 spews:
Proud Leftist at 11: Yes, I was on a church “compensation committee” for several years. It was an interesting experience. Of course, our church wasn’t that big, and our pastor didn’t have more than a modest income.
As I said in the previous topic, most members felt that if the pastor was earning less than they were, he deserved a raise. If he was making more than they were, they felt he was making too much. Of course, this attitude makes some sense, because it indirectly ties the pastor’s income to the revenue of the church, and it directly places the pastor in a similar financial position of his parishoners, so that he can identify with their problems.
But considering that there was a wide variety of incomes represented in the church, this didn’t help us much in determining his pay.
I’m not in favor of revoking the property tax exemption, except that I think we need to be careful to segregate property used for religious purposes from those used for commercial enterprises (even if it benefits the church). I think the most effective control is to threaten to revoke the non-profit status of the church if the compensation or perks taken by the pastor are unreasonable.

“Military considers recruiting foreigners
“Expedited citizenship would be an incentive
“By Bryan Bender, Globe Staff | December 26, 2006
“WASHINGTON — The armed forces, … struggling to meet recruiting goals, are considering … proposals to open recruiting stations overseas … according to Pentagon officials.
“Foreign citizens serving in the US military … could expose the Pentagon to criticism that it is … using mercenaries … [and] reflect badly on Americans’ willingness to serve in uniform.
“The idea of signing up foreigners … is gaining traction …. [w]ith severe manpower strains … the Pentagon is under pressure to consider … foreign recruits ….
” … Army officials … are working with Congress and other parts of the government to test the feasibility of going beyond US borders to recruit soldiers and Marines. …
A recent change in US law … gave the Pentagon authority to bring immigrants to the United States if it determines it is vital to national security. … Indeed, some top military thinkers believe the United States should go as far as targeting foreigners in their native countries. …
“T]o some military officials and civil rights groups, relying on large number of foreigners to serve in the military is offensive. The … National Council of La Raza has said the plan sends the wrong message that Americans … are not willing to … defend their country. Officials have also raised concerns that immigrants would be disproportionately sent to the front lines as ‘cannon fodder’ …. Some within the Army privately express concern that a big push to recruit noncitizens would smack of ‘the decline of the American empire,’ as one Army official who asked not to be identified put it. …”

Dont tell that to Nixon. I got by with a little help from friends (mafia). hehehe

JUST PAY YOUR FUCKING GAMBLING DEBT AND LEAVE.
Bubba spews:
Roger Rabbit says:
Jerry Ford and George W. Bush are the only two presidents who were never elected to the office.
Of course not. They are republicans. We dems can take a presidency with only 42% of the popular vote whereas a republican has to get 55% to overcome all the voter fraud from democrats.
MTR, POS, LSOS, DFI spews:
oh uh ok uh i’m goin’ over to (un)sp now to circle jerk and suck up to stefan the big cheese. i agree with everything he writes, yes indeed.

Redneck, regarding “ALL my degrees are in engineering and business. “ I think I pretty well showed that to be a pack of lies, you do not have an engineering degree. Did you really want me to show that for the lie it is once again? Here is yet another demonstration that you have never been associated with a hard science. Most people in hard sciences dont assume that fact will change back to whatever was convienient overnight if noone notices.
Incidently, if you really did go to ‘private university’ did you accept student loan, or are you a trust fund baby? Come on, you claim to be self made, in your world is ‘self made’ paid for by rich parents or by the government? Did you default on those loans?
regarding “My department went through massive “globalization” and “right sizing” a few years ago.” I find it interesting that you no longer claim to be a business owner (at least you once claimed to own a ‘small engineering consulting firm’). Has it become more politic to identify with ‘white collar working people’ instead of with the ‘small business owner’?
Which do you really work for, Rand, Carlyle, or the King County Republicans? My guess would be county, somehow I think someone from a national organization would show a whole lot less incompetence at tracking their own lies.
Mark The Redneck KENNEDY spews:
what’s your fucking point bill. Do you have one?
I NEVER said I owned a small bidness. Never even implied it. You got me confused with somebody else.
My parents were responsible enough to save money for my first degree. Plus I got a few scholarships. My employer picked up the tab for all the rest of the degrees. What’s amazing about that is how few people take advantage of it, and then how many bitch when they no longer have marketable skills.
Try that again… “prove” I don’t have an engineering degree.
Dumfuckinass…
bill spews:
Umm Bubba, pay attention, Gerald Ford, while one of the most honest presidents of the last half of the last century, was never elected. He was appointed VP by Nixon when Agnew resigned then assumed presidency on Nixons resignation. Hence never elected.
bill spews:
Redneck, you mean last December in “Open thread 12-23-05” when you said: “people from around the world contact me personally for consulation and advice on a variety of complex technical topics. “, you weren’t implying that?
“My parents were responsible enough to save money for my first degree. I got a few scholarships.” so, lets be clear on this, you are not self made, and got your start due to a government handout?
As to your engineering skills, anyone can look back at the “Long term budget deficits due to tax structure, not spending” thread from the 24th.
My point is that you have grossfully misrepresented yourself and are a liar.
bill spews:
Incidently, next time you start complaining about others resorting to cussing and namecalling instead of actually answering a post, you will see that response again.
skagit spews:
So, muchadoaboutnothingMark, if you don’t own the business, then you’re cheating your boss out of time . . . right?
So, now you’re a welsher, a liar, a cancer on society, and a slacker on the job.
Sorry, Skag Jr., gotta call it like it is. Besides, I taught you never to walk away from a bully – got it?
And, Mark, you’re no engineer. You might have a Lionel in the basement . . . just sayin’.
bill spews:
Actually, skagit, to be fair to redneck, I don’t think he is cheating his boss out of time, this is part of what he gets paid for and is in his job description. Hence the change in the demographics he is in, they wanted to change their target a little bit.
rhp6033 spews:
Well, gee, MTR, my parents were responsible, educated adults. But unfortunately my father died when I was 16, so that pretty much scotched the “college savings plans”. My sister was already in her first year of college, so either she had to quit so I could go to school, or I skipped school.
But fortunately, the FDR “widows and orphans” Social Security program provided me with enough money to get my undergraduate degree. As for my graduate degree, I did go to a public university, accepted federally-insured student loans, and paid the rest out of my own pocket. Considering that neither my father nor my mother lived long enough to collect social security retirement benefits, I don’t have any problem with having accepted those education benefits.
So, I guess in your view, it was either my or my parent’s bad choices to have them die before being able to save enough to pay for a college degree for both myself and my sister?
By the way, if you got a history degree, I would ask for my money back. Your understanding of world history is sophomoric, at best.
anti-liberal spews:

Typical ASS thinking: that the ONLY scholarships available are nanny state handouts.
You need to get out more.

Roger Rabbit spews:
83 Mark The Redneck KENNEDY says: My parents were responsible enough to save money for my first degree.
Lucky you! My parents had too many mouths to feed to save a dime for anything. I WORKED for my first degree — and all subsequent degrees. I did work a Republican asshole like you can’t even imagine doing. I know what WORK really is. To a Republican like you, “work” is just a term you fling around when it’s useful in an argument.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Bubba, give it up. The rightwing myth that JFK “stole” the 1960 election was debunked so long ago, and so many times, that only idiots like you who didn’t get the official memo from Wingnut Central are still trying to peddle that tired old lie.
While the overall popular vote was close, the electoral vote was not; Kennedy won 303 – 219. Even if Mayor Daley gamed the Chicago vote (JFK carried Illinois by only 9,000 votes), that state’s electoral votes were not enough to change the outcome; Nixon also would have had to win Texas or several smaller states.
It’s also a myth that Nixon declined to ask for a recount for the “good of the country” and to “avert a constitutional crisis.” While that was Nixon’s public stance, in true Nixonian fashion, behind the scenes he urged GOP leaders to file challenges and they did in 11 states, which worked their way through the courts into the summer of 1961.
Do Republicans ever tell the truth about anything? No, of course not.
Roger Rabbit spews:
90 It’s true some students benefit from the private charity of others, but why should ANYONE have to depend on charity? If a college education is now necessary to make a middle class living, shouldn’t every student who earns good grades have a right to that education? Isn’t it fundamentally unfair to make a child’s future contingent on accident of birth — or the charity of strangers? Isn’t the Old European system of hereditary access to opportunity, wealth, power, and position exactly what the founders of our country aimed to avoid when they created this nation?

US Navy welcomes the USS Bill Clinton
Sunday July 2nd ’06 Vancouver, BC, Headed for Seattle, WA.
The US Navy welcomed the latest member of its fleet today.
The USS William Jefferson Clinton (CVS1) set sail today from its home port of Vancouver, BC.
The ship is the first of its kind in the Navy and is a standing legacy to President Bill Clinton “for his foresight in military budget cuts” and his conduct while president. The ship is constructed nearly entirely from recycled aluminum and is completely solar powered with a top speed of 5 knots. It boasts an arsenal comprised of one (unarmed) F14 Tomcat or one (unarmed) F18 Hornet aircraft which although they cannot be launched or captured on the 100 foot flight deck, but form a very menacing presence.
As a standing order there are no firearms allowed on board. The 20 person crew is completely diversifi ed, including members of all races, creeds, sex, and sexual orientation. This crew, like the crew aboard the USS Jimmy Carter, is specially trained to avoid conflicts and appease any and all enemies of the United States at all costs.
An onboard Type O ne DNC Universal Translator can send out messages of apology in any language to anyone who may find America offensive. The number of apologies are limitless and though some may sound hollow and disingenuous, the Navy advises all apologies will sound very sincere.
The ship’s purpose is not defined so much as a unit of national defense, but instead in times of conflict the USS Clinton has orders to seek refuge in Canada. The ship may be positioned near the Democratic National Party Headquarters for photo-ops and can be used extensively for social experimentation and whatever other worthless jobs, the ex-commander-in-chief and his wife can think of.
It is largely rumored that the ship will also be the set for the upcoming season of MTV’s “The Real World.”
The ship was renamed and commissioned USS William J Clinton when someone realized the USS Blowfish was already taken.
Libertarian spews:
Yos Lib Bro,
Why all the capital letters?
In regard to the flat rate tax, you didn’t understand what I was trying to say. A flat rate is fair because it s charges everyone the same rate. I didn’t say is was “favorable” to this group or that one, just a flat rate.
I can meet you half way: what say we base the taxable amount of income on the excess income over a certain figure. Let’s say, for example, that the level for a family of four is $50,000. Any income in excess of $50,000 would be taxed a one flat rate. This figure can be adjusted for inflation and to account for larger or smaller families, whatever. The point is to allow everyone to pay the same rate over some base level. That’s fair, but not favorable to any special interest group of cause.
What is wrong with that? The only ones who I can see complaining are the accountants, tax attorneys, and the tax preparation businesses because it essentially makes their businesses obsolete.
The goal of any tax reform ought first to be to make the tax preparation business obsolete. No more CPAs, attorneys and H&R Block making a living out of the complexity of the tax code. Having those people in the tax prep business is a waste of intellect.
The purpose taxes is to raise funds for the ordinary and necessary functions of government, not to support the cash cow gravy train for the tax preparation business. It’s not a jobs program for college grads with no motivation.
