“SEATTLE — The pet food recall investigation has expanded into another human food source. The Food and Drug Administration says Canadian fish meal makers apparently used some pet food tainted with melamine … to make the pellets fish farms use to feed hungry salmon.
“The organization is sending inspectors to check out the feed used by fish farming operations in Canada and the United States. They have found several facilities where it was used, but say it is not necessary – at this time – to pull farmed fish off the market. ‘We do not believe that there is any significant human health risk associated with consuming these fish,’ said James Acheson, of the FDA. But the FDA is sending agents to those facilities to find out what they are doing with fish that ate the meal. …
“State agriculture officials say … they don’t know too much more than this: One shipment of fish food was stopped and held at the border until the FDA stepped in and let it pass. The situation has many retailers, including the Ballard Market, avoiding farmed fish all together.
“But the tainted feed may also have been used to feed hatchery fish … released into the wild … [and] caught by sport and commercial fishers. Officials from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife say they purchased the tainted product for six state hatcheries and most was fed to fish before the problem was discovered. It has since removed the product but some of the fish that ate it were already released into the wild.”

Well, I downloaded and had a look at the melamine analysis method listed on the FSIS webpage. It looks like there are a few difficulties with it, for example, there are frequent false positive results due to interferences from the tissues. The lowest levels that can be accurately measured are 50 parts-per-billion (ppb) in poultry, 100 ppb in red meat. All positive results have to be confirmed using a second method.
I have direct experience with the kinds of methods described (HPLC with UV detection, GC/MS), though I haven’t done this particular analysis. I will say that melamine is not an especially GC-able compound (it is very polar and not very volatile), so the amounts are measured using HPLC-UV. If it looks like a hit, what comes out of the HPLC is collected and the prospective melamine is chemically modified to make it easier to get through a gas chromatograph for confirmation.
However, difficulties with the method aside (we in the analytical business never, ever get samples cleaned up as much as we would like – they are always gunking up our instruments), I can’t understand why the FDA could not run some pork or chicken muscle samples to see what the levels are. They could say, “below 100 ppb” or whatever, and that would still give us a better idea of what we’re dealing with.
The LD50 in rats (the dosage at which half the exposed animals die) for melamine is more than 3g per kg of body weight, so a 180 lb person would have to eat ~225g of melamine, assuming humans are equally sensitive to melamine, for this level of toxicity. Even if they were finding parts per million instead of parts be billion in meat samples, that’s a lot of pork chops! (28g is one ounce.)
Really, I think there is a lot more to worry about from eating tainted products more directly – food bars or other things with tainted flour/gluten in them, because it’s looking like melamine + cyanuric acid = nasty precipitate that blocks kidney tubules and shuts kidneys down.

Actually, I drive a very large Dodge Pickup (I have said this time and time again) It runs off of Bio-Diesel, when that is cheaper than regular diesel. It kinda reminds me of Marcy Bruner running for Congress in the 8th. She, like you, didn’t know a Halligan from a Pike Pole and still she tried to pass herself off as someone with a basic understanding of how Fire unions and firefighter think.
