As if there aren’t enough real sex offenders in WA, the state GOP is apparently fictionalizing new ones.
Yesterday I did a quick hit on the state GOP’s vile “sex offender” mailing, not realizing that the image I used came from VanBlog, the new blog from Vancouver, WA’s Vanguard weekly newspaper. This oversight on my part is doubly disappointing, because I’ve been meaning to plug VanBlog and writer Jon DeVore, whose now defunct (and much missed) Columbian Watch was one of my favorite WA state blogs.
Jon is working on a piece about the scandal for Vanguard, and has provided updated information in my comment threads. And yes… I think it appropriate to start calling this disgusting misinformation campaign a “scandal.”
In my original post I said the Republican hit piece was “based on a lie,” an assertion perennial HA reader/GOP candidate Richard Pope objected, I had not backed up with facts. However, the lie to which I referred was the general lie of this whole campaign of lies… that the Democrats’ rejection of a procedural stunt on the first day of session was in any way a rejection of a particular policy or objective. I had actually assumed that the “sex offender” shown on the post card was an actual “sex offender” who actually lived in Rep. Deb Wallace’s 17th district. I mean… the Republicans wouldn’t be so stupid as to mock up a fake sex offender, would they?
Well… apparently… they might.
Jon explains in my comment thread that he has been trying to match the man pictured to known sex offenders, without any luck:
I did have someone sit down and go through ALL of the Clark County Level II and Level III sex offenders (the ones there are pictures for) on the state web site. (http://ml.waspc.org/) He found NOBODY that even remotely resembles the person in the mailer in Clark County.
I personally went through every photo of someone listed for “rape of a child” in Clark County myself today, with no matches.
And the usually staunchly partisan Richard reports similar results from his own research, eventually concluding:
Looks like the GOP mailing will backfire and generate a bunch of negative publicity. I can’t believe they were so stupid as to make up an alleged offender out of whole cloth. I wonder whether any of the 62 REAL Level III sex offenders listed for Clark County are quite as bad of character as the fictional fellow’s history portrays him to be.
Unfortunately, lost in the Republican’s cruel, insensitive, and stunningly stupid misinformation campaign — what Seattle P-I columnist Thomas Shapley calls “a cheap and shameful political stunt” — is a rational public debate over our sex offender laws, and what can be done to strengthen them.
For example, one of the most controversial provisions of our current law offers shorter sentences to offenders who abuse family members, as opposed to strangers… what our friend Richard cynically denigrates as a “Friends and Family discount.” But as Shapley points out, there’s actually a rationale behind this provision.
Coursing though all those debates is the understanding that the toughest prison sentence can be irrelevant without a conviction. Especially when family members are accused, there are demonstrable links between the severity of the potential sentence and the child victim’s willingness to testify or even report the sexual abuse. Do you really want to send Daddy or Uncle Harry to prison? It’s just another facet in the victimization of the child, of course, but it is a factor.
The true predators take smarmy advantage of this conundrum, using their position of trust and affection to prey on children, only to have the relationship they have perverted to their own gratification serve as a shield against prosecution or as a get-out-of-jail-free card into deferred prosecution and treatment.
“What’s a little child sexual abuse between friends and family?” … one might assume that’s the Democratic platform according to the vile, Republican rhetoric we’ve been hearing. But in fact, our current law was crafted the way it is at the urging of prosecutors. It may make for good political demagoguery to call for harsher sentences, but if the result is that fewer offenders are convicted, we’ll only be putting young victims at even greater risk.
And that, of course, is the larger risk of exploiting emotional issues like this to vilify your opponents: it short-circuits an informed public debate, raising the potential of bad policy and unintended consequences.
The truth is, this postcard was never about urging Rep. Wallace to protect children, it was about defeating her in the November election. So instead of conjuring up a fictional child molester, why not just cut to the chase, and paste Rep. Wallace’s photo onto the postcard? After all, that’s the message Republican strategists are really trying to send to voters.
UPDATE:
Further evidence of the GOP’s fake “sex offender” comes from a diary on Daily Kos that shows the exact same postcard, but this time addressed to voters in Rep. Bill Grant’s 16th District.
The postcards boldly warn voters “This violent sex predator lives in your community.” I hadn’t realized that the GOP’s sense of community was so broad that it spanned multiple legislative districts.
UPDATE, UPDATE:
Collect them all! We now have images of postcards from the 16th and 17th districts. If anybody has a postcard from another district, please send me an image.

It’s money for a railroad segment that goes to just one place.

I think we’re seeing a pattern here. The republicans have lied their way into power and gotten so used to just spewing bullshit and having it work, that they don’t see any reason to start campaigning on truth. The difference now is that after years of their lies, their assaults on truth, their attack on freedom, decent men and women are starting to call the GOP on their bullshit and it’s even shaming some of the righties who remember what it was like to be a good citizen so they are deviating from the party line.
To those who say Dems need a plan. I say no we don’t. All we have to do is get busy exposing the GOP bullshit machine for what it is and we’ll do away with the fuckers for at least eight years. Then we can have a plan.

HALLIBURTON SUPPLIED TROOPS WITH CONTAMINATED WATER
The Associated Press reports:
“Halliburton Cited in Iraq Water Contamination
“By LARRY MARGASAK, AP
“WASHINGTON (Jan. 22) – Troops and civilians at a U.S. military base in Iraq were exposed to contaminated water last year and employees for the responsible contractor, Halliburton, couldn’t get their company to inform camp residents, according to interviews and internal company documents.
“Halliburton … disputes the allegations about water problems at Camp Junction City, in Ramadi, even though they were made by its own employees and documented in company e-mails.
“‘We exposed a base camp population (military and civilian) to a water source that was not treated,’ said a July 15, 2005, memo written by William Granger, the official for Halliburton’s KBR subsidiary who was in charge of water quality in Iraq and Kuwait. ‘The level of contamination was roughly 2x the normal contamination of untreated water from the Euphrates River,’ Granger wrote ….
“The company’s former water treatment expert at Camp Junction City said that he discovered the problem last March, a statement confirmed by his e-mail the day after he tested the water. While bottled water was available for drinking, the contaminated water was used for virtually everything else, including handwashing, laundry, bathing and making coffee, said water expert Ben Carter of Cedar City, Utah.
“Another former Halliburton employee who worked at the base, Ken May of Louisville, said there were numerous instances of diarrhea and stomach cramps – problems he also suffered.
…
“Halliburton has contracts to provide a number of services to U.S. forces in Iraq and was responsible for the water quality at the base in Ramadi.
“Granger’s July 15 memo said the exposure had gone on for ‘possibly a year’ and added, ‘I am not sure if any attempt to notify the exposed population was ever made.’
The first memo on the problem – written by Carter to Halliburton officials on March 24, 2005 – was an ‘incident report’ from tests Carter performed the previous day.
“‘It is my opinion that the water source is without question contaminated with numerous micro-organisms, including Coliform bacteria,’ Carter wrote. ‘There is little doubt that raw sewage is routinely dumped upstream of intake much less than the required 2 mile distance. Therefore, it is my conclusion that chlorination of our water tanks while certainly beneficial is not sufficient protection from parasitic exposure.’
“Carter said he resigned in early April after Halliburton officials did not take any action to inform the camp population. The water expert said he told company officials at the base that they would have to notify the military. ‘They told me it was none of my concern and to keep my mouth shut,’ he said. … ‘They brushed it under the carpet,’ Carter said.
“A July 14, 2005, memo showed that Halliburton’s public relations department knew of the problem. ‘I don’t want to turn it into a big issue right now,’ staff member Jennifer Dellinger wrote in the memo, ‘but if we end up getting some media calls I want to make sure we have all the facts so we are ready to respond.’
“Halliburton’s performance in Iraq has been criticized in a number of military audits ….”

Actually, Goldy, CURRENT law does not have a “Friends and Family Discount” for child sex predators. They get about seven years on the first offense for statutory rape or molestation of a child under twelve years of age. 85% of this has to be served, making it six years in prison.
DEMOCRATS are proposing to increase this punishment to 30 years in prison — but only if the child sex predator does not know his or her victim. 25 years of this would actually have to be served. If the child sex predator knows the victim, then they only get a seven year sentence — hence the “Friends and Family Discount”.
REPUBLICANS are proposing to increase this punishment to 30 years in prison (with 25 years having to be served) for ALL child sex predators, without exception.
REPUBLICANS also want to increase the punishment for FORCIBLE rape or molestation committed against a child under 12 years of age to mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Maybe the postcard tactic is calculated to “backfire”, and thereby draw more attention to the issue. The Democrats will complain that the GOP invented a child sex predator out of whole cloth, and therefore the tactic is unfair. At the same time, the general public will realize that (1) the Democrats really do favor a “Friends and Family Discount” and (2) the Democrats oppose mandatory life sentences for forcible child rapists.

Television Cul-de-Sac Mystery: Why Was Reality Show Killed?
By JACQUES STEINBERG
Published: January 21, 2006
AUSTIN, Tex. – A year ago, Stephen Wright and his partner, John Wright, embarked on a sociology experiment that only a reality show producer could concoct: theirs was one of seven families competing to persuade the residents of a cul-de-sac here to award them a red-brick McMansion purchased on their behalf by the ABC television network.
Michael Stravato for The New York Times
Stephen, left, and John Wright, with their son, Eli, won a house in Austin, Tex., on the canceled series “Welcome to the Neighborhood.”
Michael Stravato for The New York Times
John Wright, left, and Jim Stewart, at the home of Mr. Stewart, who had at first objected to the Wright family.
The unscripted series, “Welcome to the Neighborhood,” was heavily promoted and scheduled to appear in a summer time slot usually occupied by “Desperate Housewives.” Stephen Wright, 51, who was already living in a nice house a few miles away with his partner and adopted son, said he participated primarily for one reason: to show tens of millions of prime-time viewers that a real gay family might, over the course of six episodes, charm a neighborhood whose residents overwhelmingly identified themselves as white, Christian and Republican.
As it turned out, the Wrights did win – beating families cast, at least partly, for being African-American, Hispanic, Korean, tattooed or even Wiccan – but outside of a few hundred neighbors (who attended private screenings last summer) and a handful of journalists, almost no one has been able to see them do so.
Ten days before the first episode was to be shown, ABC executives canceled “Welcome to the Neighborhood,” saying that they were concerned that viewers who might have been appalled at some early statements made in the show – including homophobic barbs – might not hang in for the sixth episode, when several of those same neighbors pronounced themselves newly open-minded about gays and other groups.
ABC acted amid protests by the National Fair Housing Alliance, which had expressed concern about a competition in which race, religion and sexual orientation were discussed as factors in the awarding of a house. But two producers of the show, speaking publicly about the cancellation for the first time, say the network was confident it had the legal standing to give away a house as a game-show prize. One, Bill Kennedy, a co-executive producer who helped develop the series with his son, Eric, suggested an alternative explanation. He said that the protests might have been most significant as a diversion that allowed the Walt Disney Company, ABC’s owner, to pre-empt a show that could have interfered with a much bigger enterprise: the courting of evangelical Christian audiences for “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” Disney hoped that the film, widely viewed as a parable of the Resurrection, would be the first in a profitable movie franchise.

Operation Iraqi Children: A Bright Shining Hope
School Supplies from America
Education in Iraq
Soldiers love to visit Iraqi schools. The teachers are welcoming, and the kids are always excited. The children burst into smiles and waves, but seem to be almost nailed to their seats: they do not get up without the teachers’ permission.
The soldiers often arrive just to say hello, but at other times they unload trucks full of supplies: pencils, paper, and books. I visited a school far out in the boondocks near the Iranian border, where the villagers told me no Americans had ever been. In one of the classrooms, children were studying to identify mines and bombs, so they would not get blown up.
Years of war between Saddam’s Army and the Iranians, and Saddam’s Army and the Kurds, and Saddam’s Army destroying Kuwait, and Saddam’s Army versus the two separate Coalitions, have left thousands of tons of ordnance scattered around Iraq. Even if there were no explosives in Iraq, the cities are filled with dangers for children: tons of broken glass, metal shards and garbage harbor microbial perils unknown, on vacant lots where clinics may stand some day. Until then, prevention is paramount.
Mosul : One of the safe playgrounds built by Deuce Four and 401st Civil Affairs. In the old days, slides and swings were only brought out during special events and the kids had to pay just to slide or swing. Now they have playgrounds year-round. During the day when it’s hot or the kids are in school, the playgrounds are empty, but at night they’re packed.

REPUBLICANS also want to increase the punishment for FORCIBLE rape or molestation committed against a child under 12 years of age to mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Do you know how extraordinarily difficult it is right now for prosecutors to get convictions in child sex cases with the penalties the way they are? If the penalty is life in prison, which every potential juror is going to be aware of, chances are even less people are going to be convicted. Jurors will be unwilling to convict and put somebody away for life, and more people will walk than they do now.
I’m amazed at how ignorant people are. Child sex cases are probably the most difficult to prosecute. There typically is no physical evidence, and prosecutors must rely solely on the word of the child against the word of the defendant. The fact that so many cases result in pleas and convictions as it is now borders on miraculous considering how fundamentally difficult they are to prove. It is also an indication of how good prosecutors are at their jobs (imagine that — government workers who are good at what they do). And now the GOP wants to make it a whole helluva lot tougher for prosecutors to do their jobs.
Idiots.

Actually, you’re full of shit, Richard. The DNC says not a single Democrat received a single dollar from Jack Abramoff. I dare you to prove otherwise!
Here is the game the GOP liars are playing. Indian tribes have traditionally supported Democrats. Why wouldn’t they? Republicans are Indian haters who oppose treaty rights, want to dismantle tribal governments, eliminate reservations, and force Native Americans to go to the white man’s schools, adopt the white man’s language and culture, and worship the white man’s god(s). So why would Native Americans like Republicans? They don’t. They give money to Democrats in order to defeat Republicans.
So, along comes GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff and scams the tribes for tens of millions of dollars. Then the Republicans say, well the tribes are Abramoff clients, and the Democrats get money from tribes, so the Democrats took Abramoff money. See how that works?
Now, Richard, I have a little story for you. Tonto was riding across the plains with a white guy (initials L.R.) when they were surrounded by Indians. L.R. looks at Tonto and says, “we’re done for, Tonto.” Tonto replies, “what you mean, WE, white man?” Get it, Richard? Nah, you don’t get it.

After more than a year in which some U.S. officials had speculated openly he might be dead, Osama bin Laden resurfaced in his usual way, unannounced, dressing up threats of death in reasonable tones. Holed up in some remote region believed to be along the Afghan-Pakistani border, the impresario of 9/11 seemed to be talking to his enemies more than his followers. And in his audiotape, recorded in recent weeks and secretly couriered as usual to an Al Jazeera bureau, there was also something new: an offer of an olive branch. In a cynical attempt to exploit American war-weariness, especially in Iraq, the terror leader noted that U.S. polls showed declining support for the war. For the first time, he proposed “a long-term truce on fair conditions” to the American people “so both sides can enjoy security and stability.” Bin Laden, who once built his rep by pledging to destroy the “far enemy,” now seemed to be trying to close the gap. All America had to do was withdraw from Arab lands.

“Why’d patty murray get $$ from a tribe of indians in Palm Springs? HUH? WT$$@@^$#@?”
Ummm … because they like her? Because she isn’t an Indian-hating bigot? Because she supports tribal sovereignty? Because she respects tribal treaties?
Roger Rabbit spews:

Actually, the main reason is because, as chair of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, she was a conduit for campaign donations to Democratic Senators. The money was not for her, but for numerous Democratic candidates, idiot! Helloooo??? The Democrats raise money for their campaigns from their friends and supporters??? Because campaigns cost money??? Helloooo??? Anybody home????

“Now that we have photos of Baby Bush and JACKOFF together, we’ll be using those in the next election campain while GOP liars keep manufacturing false postcards about sex offenders.”
Great!!! Let’s photoshop those photos into one of those GOP sex predator flyers and mail ’em to districts held by GOP legislators.

“Republicans put up a bill that would require life sentences for offenders, but the damn Democrats wanted just a few years for these crimes, and so they have stopped this bill dead. I don’t know what crap you are trying to spew here, but once again it is YOUR party in this state stalling real sentences for such crimes!
And I ask WHY?”
The Republicans merely put on a showy stunt. It’s the Democrats who are doing the hard work of actually dealing with the problem, while Republicans screw around and play games. Just ask the prosecutors — incuding the Republican prosecutors — who is really working to stop sex predators. It ain’t the Republicans.

Senator Patty Murray is the biggest individual Democrat recipient of the Abramoff contributions, and she refuses to return any of the money.

That’s not a list of politicians receiving money from Jack Abramoff, Richard. If you read the fine print, it’s a list of politicians receiving money from Jack Abramoff, or Indian tribes, or Sun Casinos. Nice try.

C’mon Richard (@ 78), you know better than that!
The link you provided doesn’t show that Patty Murray received money from Abramoff — it shows that she received money from some Indian tribes who were cheated by Abramoff. There’s a big difference, but you knew that.
In fact, your list doesn’t show a single Democrat who received money from Abramoff, his partners, or entities controlled by Abramoff.
On the other hand, it does show that Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio) received money directly from Abramoff, Michael Scanlon, and SunCruz Casinos. Rep. Ney is accused of accepting bribes from Abramoff in return for voting in favor of Abramoff’s clients or otherwise acting in their interest. The bribes came in the form of contributions, gifts, free travel, and other benefits for Ney and his staff — all directly from Abramoff and associates. Other Republicans are rumored to face similar accusations.
No one has accused Patty Murray of even meeting with Abramoff, nor of accepting bribes or of any similar wrongdoing. The same is true of other Democrats. That’s why this is a Republican scandal.

Since I am a homo, where is the line where I get my checks after the Cal Anderson bill passes?
I always thought – up to now – and having read these erudite posts by the nut wings, now I am puzzled. They do no investigations of claims, no semi judical findings? Just let the homos get in line for checks? What a sweet deal.
Wow, better news than the Seahawk victory. Where do we go smarty butt boy? Where is it we collect fat checks for false claims that are not investigated?
What a simpleton. Do you really believe all the drivel you spout? If you can type at a keyboards. you can’t be that stupid, really.

@43, @47 I love how you Democrats talk out of both sides of your mouth. “He donated over $100,000 to the Bush campaign in 2000” (includes tribal donations), “he didn’t donate any money to Democrats” (excludes tribal donations). The personal spending limit for campaigns is under $5,000. You can be sure that Abramoff didn’t break this law, because it is so easy to get caught. The money was laundered through his clients. But to want to count that money when talking about Republicans but exclude it when talking about Democrats is the ultimate in hypocracy.
Drivel spews:
Hello Michael, one of the most reputable wingnuts and hypocrites that ‘trolls’ these pages. Abramoff was in the upper echelon of GWB’s donations at over 100K, a ‘gold’ level ‘assasin’. You should keep your insiduous comments on uSP where all the lemmings just follow the ‘spread sheet king’ of 2005.
Michael spews:
He did not donate over $100,000 in hard money. It would take about 2 seconds for the FEC to be all over him if he did. The problem is that you want to count “other than hard” contributions in the cases of Republicans, but not in the cases of Democrats.
Michael spews:
@97 You might want to call up USA Today and tell them to stop publishing lies then:
Abramoff and his wife each gave $5,000 to Bush’s 2000 recount fund and the maximum $1,000 to his 2000 campaign.
