Far from exploiting my daughter, I posted the picture because I’m proud of her (despite the fact that she clearly hasn’t brushed her hair in two weeks.) I’m proud that at the age of 10 she was self-possessed and independent enough to fly solo cross country, and go away to overnight camp for three-and-a-half weeks. And I’m proud to see her on the rifle range; it was one of my favorite camp activities when I was her age. (Ironically, I was taught how to shoot by Quakers.)

The Associated Press describes a gruesome possible crime scene in Ocean City, Md.:
Investigators must determine whether all four bodies found at the home were the offspring of Christy Freeman. Freeman, who also has four living children, has been charged in the death of one newborn found last week wrapped in a bloodied towel under her bathroom sink.
That body was determined to have been at 26-weeks gestation. Investigators still need to figure out how old the others were when they died, when they died, and whether Freeman or someone else was responsible for the deaths.
The timing is critical. If the pre-term infants were too young to be considered viable outside the womb, Freeman can\’t be charged with murder. And if they were old enough to live outside the womb, but died before Maryland passed its 2005 fetal homicide law, it may not be a crime even if Freeman caused their deaths.
The AP story is a bit unclear as to whether Freeman could be charged even if she did kill the \”pre-term infants\”:
The 2005 fetal homicide was designed to penalize those who kill a pregnant woman or her viable fetus, but it includes a provision shielding pregnant women from prosecution for actions that result in their own fetus\’s death. . . .
State Delegate Susan K. McComas, a Republican who co-sponsored the 2005 bill, said the exemption was added by majority Democrats who feared the bill would restrict a woman\’s right to abortion. \”We weren\’t contemplating a woman doing something to her own fetus,\” McComas said.

It would take me about a half hour to whip together a script that would give Goldy twice the page hits of any comparable right-wing site, and that’s if I took twenty minutes out to go to the bathroom and eat a sandwich. I come here for the quality of the posts, not the quantity of the page hits. Granted it sometimes takes a bit of sifting through the noise and dreck (see #68 above for the most recent example) but it’s worth the effort.
Actually it’s not too difficult to imagine how some of the righty blogs run up their page count. A lot of difference in knowing how and actually having the stomach to pull the trigger. That being said I’m always happy to hear about young people learning about firearms in a proper environment. The more they know the safer they are from idiots that didn’t learn safety. I started teaching my sons about firearms safety about age six even though I never let them shoot until they were nine. Now that they are adults they don’t enjoy the shooting sports like I do but I’m happy that they know how to handle guns safely.

proposal for school-based firearms certification programs, I believe we need to consider formal discussions of when it is and is not OK to cheat on exams, how to dine form samples at Gourmet supermarkets, and the essentials of Poker.

I like to shoot .22 rimfire, .45 ACP, and .44 Magnum the most (handguns, mostly), but I do really enjoy shooting guns (on my own property, target shooting so far-never hunted, but if I did, I’d take a hunter safety class first), and safety is the #1 rule. There’s something to be said for knowing how to safely disarm a dangerous tool, and general survival skills are something all folks could use, as others have pointed out on this thread. Why do guns have to be a Left/Right issue? Seems like it’s not that clear cut, somehow.

Not to get mixed up in the Mark/R=S mad tea party, but I’m glad to see the gun. David Horowitz wrote that rich red-diaper babies (the doper part came later) used to head to the hills of upper-NY State for Kommie Kampfire Kamp, where they’d sing along with Pete Seager and conspire to eat the state when they grew up.
