That was a funny video. What are they afraid of? It would be fun to blatantly stand outside the roped off line with an obvious boom mike, just to remind them that what they say is being recorded.
If asked to stop, reply that it’s as legal to do that as bush’s warrentless wiretaps. Though probably the parallels would be lost on them.
Ok, let me make sure I’ve got the particulars here.
The Washington State Farm Bureau (a non-governmental organization) reserved a portion of a public park for a private function. Ok, there’s nothing all that unusual about that.
The portion of the park reserved by the WSFB was taped off, and non-participants were not allowed in. Ok, still nothing unusual.
Officials of the WSFB told the person taping that he wasn’t allowed to do so, even though he was outside the perimiter of the event. Wait. Here’s a problem. WSFB personnel have no police powers, and there is no law (that I’m aware of) prohibiting recording events on public grounds.
Essentially, while the WSFB personnel can say whatever they like, they have no authority to enforce what they say.
A much smarter move on their part would have been to send four of their widest members to get together and sing off-key barbershop in front of the camera.
But I have to wonder why the cameraman didn’t politely tell the WSFB people that while he appreciated their opinion, he was within his rights to record anything happening within a public park, then promptly ignore anything else they said.
I wouldn’t even bring up things like wiretaps, as it would just confuse the issue. Just, “no, you’re wrong, and you have no right to stop me from peacefully using a public area of this public park”.
Of course, we might then end up with a tape of four fat Republicans singing “Sweet Adeline”, but that’s the chance we’d have to take.

What’s the matter Dino, can’t handle the “tough questions”?
51
Blue Johnspews:
Not even questions….
He’s afraid of having his words, spoken in a public place, be recorded for a wider audience, being recorded for posterity.
One additional note. I think that the chances of anyone from the Rossi campaign actually having both the intelligence and the sense of humor to come up with that sort of solution is minimal at best.
While we have events that are open to all comers, we also have private events where we’d object to having Republicans disrupt things.
That being the case, I can’t get too worked up about the idea of the Republicans having an “invitation only” event, even in a public park. Until I hear otherwise, I’ll presume that the WSFB properly reserved the area and got any required permits.
And considering how often Republicans have been caught in gaffs on-camera (not to mention situations where the candidate’s opinion changed with the audience) I understand them being a bit touchy about Democrats with video cameras.
The telling thing I see here is that the campaign chose confrontation over humor. This could have been handled by a bit of intelligence and wit.
Fortunately for us, those seem in rather short supply over in the Rossi camp.

Stevespews:
@53 “it would’ve ruined their whole day”
The left definitely needs more people like yourself – someone willing to stand up to the bullying tactics of the right-wing thugs.
Actually, GBS and Steve, we tend to be careful to instruct observers at right-wing events to be polite and courteous to a fault.
If the observer gets into a physical confrontation with the right-wing “thugs”, then the story is that a bunch of out-of-control Democrats disrupted a peaceful Republican gathering.
We still don’t get the tape, but we do get a bunch of bad press. Consider how the story would read in the Seattle Times.
There would be pictures of little old Republican ladies juxtaposed with screaming, red-faced Democrats.
Despite the constant claims that the mainstream media is somehow “liberal”, you must remember that it really isn’t. The best we usually get is neutral, and anyone believing that Mr. Blethen is liberal either needs to go back on his meds, or stop using that stuff he gets from the maid.
We’ve got to be more careful, more courteous and more responsible than the Republicans, because we’re under closer scrutiny.
Fortunately, that isn’t difficult.
56
GBSspews:
All right, Chief Barelli, let me explain the nuance. I’m not REALLLLLLY going to rip someone’s arms off and beat them with the bloody stump, but on the other hand, I’m not going to submit to their bullying tactics.
See Steve’s comments at 54. He got it.
I’ll relate a true story to you that happened to me the other day that captures the essence of what I mean and Steve picked up on.
I was walking in to a store and someone behind me said “What do you think of these high oil prices?”
Thinking he was just making polite small talk I plainly said, “These sky high prices are getting crazy.”
Then, this PUNK ASS Republican had the BALLS to say to me, a complete stranger to him in a public place, “Thank your LOCAL Democrat for it!!”
I turned to him and said, “Do you honestly think that LOCAL Democrats are to blame of high oil prices????” And, this little punk said “Yes! Because they won’t let us drill offshore!”
Believe me when I say I raised my voice a few levels and sternly gave him the facts on the Enron Loophole, how speculators run up the price of oil, how oil is bought and sold on the world’s markets, then I said one notch louder “NO AMERICAN LOVING PATRIOT IS VOTING REPUBLICAN THIS YEAR!!”
When I was finished blowing his hair back I gave him the opportunity to respond. Know what that little punk ASS bitch did??
He stared at me for 10 seconds or so turned around and walked off. Not a word. The bully had his fucking hair blown back and didn’t know what to do.
Later, after I was checking out he spotted me walking out of the store, he looked like he wanted to say something else to me, then I shot him one of my “don’t fucking piss me off or we’re going to immediately get into a fight” look and he opted to just keep walking. Wise choice.
Point of the story: Do NOT let these loud mouth pussies get away with their bullshit any more. When I’m approached by some right wing nut, I don’t let them get away with their Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity approved RNC lying talking points!!
You should do the same.

Well, seems to me that this is a typical Republican activity – use of public assetts for private purposes, profit, and power-grabs, keep the public in the dark, and while they are at it restrict everybody’s else’s lawful use of the park.
Of course, a Republican idea of a public park is one where the public pays for it, they out-source it’s operation to a private (Republican) firm which charges “user fees” to the public to use it, raking in the profit along the way, and then complains about the taxes used to pay for supporting the park being too high.
I understand your point, but we’ve got a few folks here that actually seem to advocate violence against Republicans.
My post advocated politely standing put and continuing to videotape, and yours seemed (to me at least) to advocate more active resistance.
And yes, I’ve run across folks like the individual you described as well. We know they’re out there, because somebody is still listening to Michael Savage and Ann Coulter.
(I believe that I have already told of the fellow trying to hide Al Gore’s book at the Navy Exchange, where it was one of the top five sellers. When I undid all his hard work, then bought a copy for myself, he got positively livid. It’s that “passive-agressive” streak in me.)
Unfortunately, we have folks that really do advocate taking a much more agressive stand. Although my suspicion is that at least one of these folks is really a neo-con troll, posting for the purpose of making us look bad, some are not.
And with the Rossi campaign doing everything it can to distort, mislead and simply lie it’s way into office, it’s already much too tempting to simply go after some of these folks with a big stick.
But… It would only be a momentary pleasure, and bound to get us talked about in unfavorable terms.

Looks like I’ve run yet ANOTHER cowardly republican off a HA thread. Man this is just too easy. The fucking Nazi is nowhere to be found now that I’ve called BS on his BS. Who the fuck is next?

Isn’t “Recreate ‘68 ” McCain’s campaign theme?
And did he mention that he was a POW in ’68? Would you like to hear it again?
Blue John spews:
That was a funny video. What are they afraid of? It would be fun to blatantly stand outside the roped off line with an obvious boom mike, just to remind them that what they say is being recorded.
If asked to stop, reply that it’s as legal to do that as bush’s warrentless wiretaps. Though probably the parallels would be lost on them.
John Barelli spews:

This would have been perfect!
tune: I’m Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover
I’m looking over my dead dog, Rover,
Who I hit with the power mower.
One leg is missing, the other is gone,
A third leg is scattered all over the lawn.
No need explaining the one remaining
Is spinning on the car port floor…
I’m looking over my dead dog, Rover,
Who I over-looked before!

“It’s a public park, but you are not allowed to be here” In other words, Dino hand picks the audience to which he speaks. Nice….
What’s the matter Dino, can’t handle the “tough questions”?
Blue John spews:
Not even questions….
He’s afraid of having his words, spoken in a public place, be recorded for a wider audience, being recorded for posterity.
John Barelli spews:

If it were me outside their perimeter and they politely asked me to stop filming. I wouldn’t.
IF those two goons came up and tried to intimidate me, I’d only keep filming.
IF those two goons tried to stop me . . . let’s just say it would’ve ruined their whole day. I mean, going to the emergency ward to get your arms reattached after being beaten silly with them sort of puts a damper on the festivities.
I’m just sayin’, fair warning to you Lossi supporters.
Steve spews:
@53 “it would’ve ruined their whole day”
The left definitely needs more people like yourself – someone willing to stand up to the bullying tactics of the right-wing thugs.
John Barelli spews:
GBS spews:
When I’m approached by some right wing nut, I don’t let them get away with their Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity approved RNC
lyingtalking points!!You should do the same.

John Barelli spews:
GBS
