A very serious situation at the Capitol Hill campus of Seattle Central Community College:
An anonymous threat scrawled in a men’s bathroom at Seattle Central Community College kept hundreds of students and faculty away from campus this morning.
About half of the 5,500 students at the Capitol Hill campus appeared to be heeding the college’s Wednesday advisory to stay home if they felt uneasy about the note discovered last week, said SCCC spokeswoman Laura Mansfield. The note, written in pencil on a toilet-paper dispenser in the science and math building, read: “I will kill everyone at SCCC on May 31.”
SCCC officials decided to keep the college open, but notified students and faculty to “use their best personal judgment” about reporting to work and classes.
I don’t know why anyone would feel uneasy about going to school at SCCC today. After all, Seattle Central is a gun-free campus (even for those with a legal permit), so how could anyone bring a firearm on the property?
Wait a sec… you mean criminals sometimes disobey laws?
—-
All kidding aside, as a matter of policy, banning people with concealed permits from carrying on campus is dumb. In essence, we’re banning people who have the most experience handling firearms (aside from police or military). Recent news shows how you cannot depend on “security” or even the police to be there when you need them. A more enlightened stance, a civil liberty-respecting stance, would be preferable to the current rules governing firearms on our college campuses.
How will you tell the concealed weapons carriers from the nuts once the shooting starts?
Well said.
I’m in absolute agreement with the OP. Sadly, many will not see it that way.
But on the situation itself, while I can understand why they’re so jumpy, at some point people need to realize that life is dangerous, and it may end without notice. If you live your life always worried about it ending, then you’ll never actually enjoy it until it ends naturally. We should simply take *practical* steps and then let things fall where they may. Not very consoling to those who’ve lost a loved one, but it really is the only way to do things, IMO, without becoming paralyzed by fear… and without becoming a permanent “victim” for the government to exploit (“we’ll keep you “safe” so long as you do what we tell you”).
kirk, if they’re shooting at you, they’re the nuts. :)
And who is going to tell the parents who pay the majority of tuition that the best security system their 10-40k can buy is mob violence?
It’s a red herring non starter troll bate issue thrown out by the NRA to distract from the fact that a mentallly ill kid was able to procure an arsenal for himself despite background checks.
Sure, fine, brilliant! But, how about the ban on carrying weapons into government buildings? Isn’t that just as un-civil liberty-respecting? Why limit the options? Bad grades, shot the Professor? – lose in court, shot the judge? – to much junkmail, shot a postal worker? Whoopee ti yi yo! Living in a Fucking John Wayne movie where everybody starts blazing away at the drop of a hat sounds just great to me! [/disgusted sarcasm]
More guns = less crime
Riiiiiiight. Because real-life shooting masacres involve multiple crazy people…. Right.
In other words, you will be able to tell who is who because the crazy guy will be the one who continues shooting and shoots at people who do not have guns. The people legally carrying concealed guns will be the ones yelling “stop or I will shoot you” and then shooting him, and then pointing their guns at the ground.
Good post, Will.
Federal buildings have security: metal detection at the doors, armed guards inside. It’s not an honest comparison.
Seattle Central Community College needs to post “Gun Free Zone” signs at all entrances to the campus grounds and on all entrances to buildings. The gun prohibition is not in the RCW (Revised Code of Washington), but in an obscure administrative regulation, WAC 132F-136-030(9), which deals with “Limitation of Use” of campus facilities.
http://apps.leg.wa.gov/WAC/def.....2F-136-030
It is extremely important to make everyone, not only students, but members of the general public, aware of this firearms prohibition, so that they can honor it. Criminals and the mentally ill are even less likely to know the Washington Administrative Code, so it is very important to post these signs all over the place, so they can be aware of this rule.
Also, the only criminal penalty that could be imposed for someone carrying a firearm at SCCC would generally be trespassing, as they would be on campus without permission if they were carrying a firearm. (Unless, of course, it was otherwise illegal for the person to carry a firearm.) So it is very important to post the campus for that reason. Unless you post property with “No Trespassing” type signs, someone can usually only be charged with trespassing if they have been given a specific written warning letter not to enter the property again.
Since SCCC is probably not yet posted with “Gun Free Zone” signs (which should also warn violators of the possible trespassing criminal penalty) at the present time, it was probably a good idea for folks to stay way from campus today.
Will… yeah… the best way to reduce gun violence is that have, um, more guns.
Using the occasional, random nutcase incident to justify people packing concealed weapons in public places is just downright silly, when statistics show the single largest risk of gun violence comes from owning one. Gun related domestic violence and suicides far out number VA Tech like killings… they just occur incrementally and quietly.
Mob violence? Mob violence is when they chase someone down the street waving pitchforks, machetes, and torches.
Carrying or even using a handgun to protect yourself is hardly “mob violence”. Every society has its share of crazies, and ours has more than most. Ask the guys at VT how well their gun policies worked. But some people refuse to see and would rather just say, “Hire more guards, more metal detectors, more cameras.” And then these same people get upset when someone misuses all the guards and cameras, and the next cry is that we need someone to watch the watchers, and then that the watchers need to be watched, ad infinitum.
Publican House members recently under federal scrutiny include:
Jerry Lewis of California: Prosecutors in Los Angeles are examining how millions of dollars in federal contracts were steered to a company whose founders were big contributors to Lewis’ campaigns while he chaired the House Appropriations Committee.
Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania: Authorities are investigating whether his legislative aides performed campaign work while on government time.
Gary Miller of California: Federal agents have looked into some land deals involving the lawmaker.
Just another day in the land of hypocrites.
Goldy, the best way to reduce gun violence is to have fewer violent people. The best way to do that is to have a better society, which may or may not include fewer guns.
As for people using guns to kill themselves, well, I don’t see how that has any bearing on anything else. If people want to kill themselves, they’re going to find some way of doing it, guns or no. The way to address that is to help with the issues that are making them want to kill themselves. IMO, you need to deal with the people, both with suicides and with violence to others.
“Every society has its share of crazies, and ours has more than most.” No, actually, we don’t. It’s just that in most other westernized countries when someone is this disturbed their immediate arms of choice don’t include a firearm.
In the end none of us have a protection from random acts of violence other social norms really. If being armed in a shootout was blanket protection then cops and soldiers would never die in the line of duty.
But it still all comes down to the fact that parents by and large don’t want it and they pay the bills. Beauty of the free market and all that.
Enough herring fishing for one day for me.
The Chief @ 11
I don’t know who all these statistical people out there killing themselves are exactly, but I know plenty of people who own/carry handguns safely without hurting ANYONE, EVER.
Besides, if fewer guns meant less gun violence, wouldn’t DC be the safest big city in America?
@ 6
Persons with a conceal permit are allowed to carry inside the legislature in Olympia.
Also, when Howard Dean was governor, he was quoted saying he had no problem with someone bringing a gun into their office so long as they weren’t a felon, mentally ill, or otherwise impaired. In Vermont, anyone is allowed to carry concealed without a permit and also has one of (if not the lowest) crime rate in the country.
Random acts of violence… I love that term. It’s something someone uses when they are clueless about why someone does something. It’s like saying salmon return to their home streams “by instinct”, when they really mean we don’t know (though these days, maybe we’ve figured that out).
Cops and soldiers are not killed by “random acts of violence”; particularly with soldiers, the violence is not random, but very specific and focused.
No one is stating that possessing a concealed weapon will somehow magically make you proof against getting blown away by some crazy. The idea is that you have a means to fight back if you need to do so. You may still die, but unless you’re unlucky enough to die at the onset, you have a better chance of survival with a gun than without one, which is why (in part) “cops and soldiers” are armed.
And you are partially mistaken as to who pays the bills: we also pay the bills, in case you are unaware of where tax monies in this state go. These are state funded institutions, and tuition only mitigates the cost. State schools are under state control, not parental control. If the parents don’t like it, they should send their kids to a private college, where their tuition really would “pay the bills”. Beauty of the free market and all that.
Is this story a joke? Does someone at horsesass really believe that concealed weapons create safety? Many rich countries do not allow concealed weapons and they are not less safe.
“statistics show the single largest risk of AUTO ACCIDENTS/violence comes from owning one”
Seriously,
I think part of the CPL ought to include regular “qualifying” to receive/keep your license. Say every 90-180 days.
Sharpen the skills of those who are carrying.
I don’t know.
More guns does not equal less crime, at least not in any current empirically sound study.
And putting guns into the hands of a bunch of teenagers on Capitol Hill doesn’t seem like the soundest of policies to me.
Then again, I attended SCCC and it is one of the most divese campuses in the state, with MANY older returning students. If responsible adults want to carry guns and have passed reasonable regulation to do so, I’m not sure why they shouldn’t. That said, such regulations should be a high bar.
The bathroom scrawler is probably just a wanker. Unfortunately, the ones from whom you have the most to fear are the sullen loner (who don’t write their plans in bathrooms) and the jealous and rejected male lover, who may have gotten a concealed carry permit before he fucked up his head over “his” woman.
I should add that the concept of “the valiant responsible gun-toting citizen fighting back against the crazed gunman” is a scenario that:
– I’ll bet is a nightmare for local police.
– Is so rare as to be ridiculous to use as a basis for a policy change.
Oh yeah, and no guns in a divorce court. EVER.
I had to do a double-take and figure out if I had clicked on the right shortcut. I figured I accidentally went to Soundpolitics.com or something.
Good on ‘ya Will!
Realizing the crazies and felons with guns are by far the biggest issue and not the non-crazies means we might be able to get a to point that we actually start trying harder to keep guns out of the crazies hands……instead of everybody’s hands.
From the Moderate R….Matty
I think people missed the point of the first poster (kirk). But the question should be: how do the POLICE tell the difference between the nut and the helpful bystander with a gun? I guarantee some cop (especially in NYC/LA where the cops are frisky with a gun) will kill some poor kid just trying to defend his class.
Great post Will! You can tell the criminal from the shooter because hopefully by the time the Seattle Cops get there, the criminal will be dead, and the shooter will have put his gun away, and is helping anyone he can who was a victim.
These Idiots wouldn’t enter an Armed School! Ever noticed they don’t enter police stations and start shooting? DUH
I noticed the idea of “how will the cops tell who is who” has come up.
It’s in the interest of any person who defends themself to identify themself to the cops at the scene. If you saw footage from the Columbine HS massacre, the cops will treat EVERYONE as a suspect at first, hence the video of students being whisked out of the school with their hands in the air. Someone who draws a weapon in self defense is often subject to scrutiny by the police (for good reason), and are often detained until the cops know it was indeed self defense.
As for ID of shooters and helpers….to be shot by a crazy because I wasn’t packing or to risk being shot by a cop in a confusing situation if it wasn’t resolved by the time they got there by a slug in the looney’s head? Easy choice….take the small chance with a cop.
The cops are also pretty well trained and a very good chance they’ll be able to spot the whack-job that’s gunning down people indiscriminately and the CCW toting citizen trying to defend themself. And if that’s not enough when the cop says, “Police. Drop your weapon!”….the whack-job tends to keep firing. The CCW toting citizen would see the uniform and say, “I’m so glad you guys are here! When I put this gun down……please don’t let them shoot me.”
….seems kinda easy to tell.
I wonder what Will’s reaction wil be when Kucinich announces his support for all participants in the CBC/Fox Democratic debate to be packing heat.
re 13: Too bad we Democrats can’t have a congressman named Georgie Jessel.
Goldy:
You should be more reasonable in your response. Your mocking tone indicates you haven’t thought deeply on this subject.
According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, 1995, if a U.S. county implements laws which encourage civilians to obtain licenses to carry concealed weapons (“shall-issue” laws), that county will experience around a 19% drop in “confrontational” crime (crime where the criminal and victim are present at the same time). In those counties, the economic offset of this drop in confrontational crimes leads to increased “non-confrontational” crimes such as car thefts, unoccupied home burglaries, after-hours business burglaries, etc.
My personal experience backs this up. When I lived in Los Angeles, I was witness to 4 gun incidents in 6 years. In Seattle, I have lived here 11 years and never seen a gun incident. In Los Angeles, no law-abiding citizen is carrying a gun. In Seattle, about 4% of law-abiding citizens are carrying a gun. I feel 100x safer here.
Heath
Will, For once I really like your post.
These Fascist gun removers would rather see more bloodshed than having a person take down the crazy fool.
The problem with the whack-job guy in the Tacoma Mall shootings was he hesitated and is now paralyzed while the crazed whack-job shooter just shot.
Where are the normal libtard idiots Cluelessman and Pelletman on this issue?
Sorry that should read … The problem with the good guy in the Tacoma Mall …
“All kidding aside, as a matter of policy, banning people with concealed permits from carrying on campus is dumb. In essence, we’re banning people who have the most experience handling firearms (aside from police or military).”
Lord, Will, are you serious? Often the people with concealed weapons permits are simply paranoid nutcakes who couldn’t hit the side of a barn at 10 paces.
HI PUDDYWHACKO!
CHECK IT OUT IN THE MOONIE TIMES!
YOUR PEEPS DON’T LIKE THE BROWN-SKINNED.
“In essence, we’re banning people who have the most experience handling firearms …”
The only “experience” you need to get a concealed carry permit is a check for the amount of the fee.
New Film of Loch Ness Monster; Republicans Still Searching for Democratic Voting Fraud
On Sunday, a 55-year-old Brit took what is billed as the “best ever” film of the Loch Ness Monster, which is currently being studied by zoology experts.
Meanwhile, flotillas of Republican operatives equipped with high-tech sonar, radar, infra-red cameras, and satellite imagery have yet to find a single case of anyone impersonating a real voter.
Sorry Will. You rest your entire case on presumption, wishfull thinking, anecdote, and the willful refusal to even consider statistical evidence that goes against you.
But hey, I’ll pray for ya’ when you’re out in public. Maybe you’ll get a pony, too. Feel better now?*
*When you’re in private, you’re on your own, buddy. Sleep with the safety on.
Will sez: “Persons with a conceal permit are allowed to carry inside the legislature in Olympia.”
(1.) So what does this have to do with the case at hand? and (2.) That’ll end the first time some nutcase with a permit pulls the trigger inside the building.
But I guess you like to play with fire, too. After all, it only is a problem if the fire gets out of control, right? Or how ’bout this one: “You only have to be afraid if you’re guilty”? Same line of reasoning. Flatly false in all cases. Bogus, bogus, bogus, line of reasoning.
“In Vermont, anyone is allowed to carry concealed without a permit and also has one of (if not the lowest) crime rate in the country.”
Selective use of evidence; poor analogy; does not control for other variables; fails to demonstrate the cause and effect asserted.
Jayzus fuck, Wll. If you’re going to argue like a wingnut, you have to be better than that! Fewer guns=communism. Now that sells.
Puttybrain abv.: “Will, For once I really like your post.”
Well, how does it feel to have the psychos on your side, Will?
Sorry. Couldn’t resist. Sometimes it’s fun to spout irresponsibly like a wingnut.
Will sez: “Besides, if fewer guns meant less gun violence, wouldn’t DC be the safest big city in America?”
Most studies show a high correlation of homicides with gun ownership (per capita). But worse, you don’t even state your case clearly. Are you saying there are fewer guns per capita in Wa. DC than elsewhere? More? Tougher laws in DC? Ineffective tough laws? What the fuck are you saying here, Will?
Oh. Forgot. It’s more important to fire off rhetorical questions. Silly me.
Will sez: “Wait a sec… you mean criminals sometimes disobey laws?”
Kidding you say? You’re entire argument is embedded in this rhetorical flourish that you slyly imply is just ‘kidding’.
Shame on you, Will. Shame. Let the wingnuts appeal to fear. They specialize in it. Why join them?
You should read Lott, More Guns, Less Crime, 19997.
Washington has the 5th-highest total of registered gun-carriers and is the 32nd-ranked state for murder rate.
It makes sense if you think about it, too. Put your shaking fears aside and realize that people who take the trouble to get gun-carrying licenses are responsible people, not nut-cases. Nut-cases do not really care about licensing…
I would be for gun control if liberals stayed out of government and only liberals were shot. Until then all republicans should carry heat.
I for one think all Dems should carry a gun and be ready to defend themselves against Publican traitors who want to destroy America, give in to the terrorists and eliminate the freedoms found under our US Constitution. When they come to my door, they’ll get a surprise.
Heath sez: “Washington has the 5th-highest total of registered gun-carriers and is the 32nd-ranked state for murder rate.”
Simply false, or more charitably, misleading. There is no way in god’s green earth that WA (15th in population) has the 5th number of registered gun owners. But worse, is the assumption that this is a proxy for actual “gun ownership”. On guns per capita we are in the lower 3rd. In murder rates, we are better than average (must be all those fucking Norwegians). But really, that stat you tossed like an NRA hand grenade is so meaningless in isolation from other variables such as income, race, etc., as to be simply dishonest. Like Will, you should be ashamed of yourself–or beware of idiots bearing statistics.
Will –
You must be joking! Your logic is close to that of our great and esteemed (wing-nut) state Senator Pam Roach, who once said that campuses and schools would be much safer if teachers and staff were allowed to “carry”. Good F _ _ _ ing Grief!
You must be reading too many of those NRA propaganda magazines which state, over and over (until we believe the lie), “It’s only the criminals who do bad with guns”. I ask, then how come the last decade has seen massacres of hundreds of innocent people all at the hands of unbalanced whackos who usually have no previous record or only “seem” a bit unbalanced?
Hey, we can’t expect the average two syllable capable gun store owner types to be able to tell if someone is in a killing mood can we? Psychoanalysis was not mentioned in the Constitution, so there you go. They are off, Scott free.
How many times does the neighbor next door say, “Oh, yes, they were really weirdo criminal drug dealers with machine guns”! Instead, they say, “Gosh, what nice people they were – kept to themselves – mowed my lawn – pet my cat – babysat my kids. Who would have guessed”?
Of course, we, the People, our lawmakers and the press are all so “cowed” by the NRA juggernaught political machine that no one wants to publically discuss gun control anymore. We will NOT be safe until the arsenal we allow to be toted around in the streets is returned to the armories and put under public regulation (_not_ by the government but by the People) as the Second Amendment indicates.
Or, we could do what the NRA will probably suggest next in their constant and ‘logical’ effort to make us free by all carrying weapons – – – eliminate toilet paper dispensers. Toilet paper kills! Or is it, “Guns don’t kill people, toilet paper dispensers do”?
Think it out before you write yourself into another conservative sand pit and let us know if you get a personal “Thank You” from Pam!
The left who want to control guns are facists. Plain and simple. Nuff said.
The politest place you will ever find, is not Miss Manner’s house, it’s a gun-range. Everybody knows everybody else is armed.
The left who want to control guns are facists
WHAT ARE FACISTS DOOFUS? ARE THEY INTO FACES OR SOMETHING?
HOW’S THAT ACVR WORKING OUT FOR YOU DOOFUS?
AND BEFORE I FORGET:
WAS THE CHILD RAPIST A LIBERAL OR A CONSERVATIVE?
The politest place you will ever find
WOW GREAT. IF EVERYONE PACKS HEAT THEN EVERYONE IS ON THEIR BEST BEHAVIOR.
A SOCIETY RULED BY FEAR – THE ULTIMATE WINGNUT VISION.
@49: Dan Rather says:
“The left who want to control guns are facists. Plain and simple. Nuff said.”
Ah, more wingnut sublime appeal to truth, beauty, and logic. Nice work Plato, er, or is it Pluto? On second thought, that was probably an insult to dogs. Politics does indeed make for strange bedfellows, Will. Enjoying the company?
Will sez: “A more enlightened stance….”
No, Will. A more enlightened stance would be to grow a pair and be brave enough to walk among your fellows without the need for weaponry, without the fear; brave enough to advocate social policies that reflect and enhance that bravery and dignity.
Heath sez: “people who take the trouble to get gun-carrying licenses are responsible people, not nut-cases. Nut-cases do not really care about licensing…”
So, what side are you arguing for? I, too, support licencing firearms. Are you saying that since licencing doesn’t stop criminals from getting guns that we should not licence? Do you make the same argument about auto licences? Or any other licence for that matter?
“I’m wishing for a pony” libertarians make that kind of nonsensical argument all the time. You one of them?
@52,
Why do most people follow the speed limit? Because they fear getting a ticket. Every society uses fear to some degree, the question is how much and in what respects. There are a *lot* of people who wont do the right thing unless they fear the possible results of doing the wrong thing.
And I wouldn’t bring up Plato: you would NOT like to live in his idealistic Republic. Then again, none of us would, and none of us would be allowed to do so. :P
@55,
*raises his hand* I’m one of them. I’d like a pony, too.
Thanks.
Liberals must arm!
@49 No, you guys are fascists, and you’re supposed to call us “commies.” You’re gonna get in trouble with Wingnut Propaganda Central for this.
@50 How did that work for ya in Dodge City circa 1870, or in Chicago circa 1928?
@50 Armed societies aren’t polite societies; cemeteries are polite societies.
What a bunch of liberal IDIOTS.
Let’s review history for the 9th time libtards. Either you have no menory OR you can’t fathom the truth.
1.) Fascists in Germany also known as the National Socialist Party in 1931-32 ban German peeps from owning personal firearms.
2.) Hitler brands peeps he don’t like with a number
3.) Hitler has these peeps get papers identifying their heritage
4.) Hitler has these peeps wear identifying symbols on their clothes
5.) Hitler sends these peeps on long railroad journeys in boxcars
6.) These identified peeps arrive to special camps
7.) These peeps are stripped and told to take a special shower
8.) None of these peeps return to the human race
9.) Other peeps are slowly starved to death
10.) Iran’s leader Whackminajab said this didn’t happen
Now today – Socialists such as Hilary Clinton – Puddy delivered recent posts with her socialist $$$ words is for gun control, not like Dennis Kucinich but more than John Effin Kerry. Fascists of the Progressive NEW Democrat Party want the American populace to disarm. Funny, how do you disarm the criminal element like Stupidman? We already saw this “experiment” in Australia go awry.
Other fascists on this board have shown their true colors for radical fascist-like gun control. Just reread some Moonbat! statements above.
Too bad Cluelessman@35 can’t seem to find the right words for the thread topic.
Too bad Pelletman@59 forgets his history. But being a “rabbit” explains the small paramecium brain capacity. Being an “old” rabbit explains the Alzheimer issues.
Proud You’re An ASS@55: Why are you bringing up horses to the argument again? Just can’t get your Enumclaw friend out of your sub-conscious huh?
Cluelessman@52: Even the FBI says a criminal will think twice about B&E if he thinks the homeowner could be packing heat!
And for the five-name idiot who works for the Seattle School district blogging about 100,000 police officers on the beat…
http://www.heritage.org/Press/.....092500.cfm
Somehow they never made it past 57,175 under someone else’s watch and FY2001 budget for a program “funded” in 1993.

Man if you could stay on topic… but we know why! I thought your real BRAIN DAMAGE occurred when you traveled down the birth canal and the pediatrician used those forceps to extract your fat ass! But I stand corrected. You are naturally stupid.

Did I say: I have first hand knowledge jackASS of latino gangs taking over black turf in Philadelphia?
What a Maroon!
Don’t assume Cluelessman. I make you look really stupid!
Cluelessman: I explained it in the next posting #67. I know that area in LA real well Cluelessman.
I see you’ve figgered out Google. Good for you.
Then in posts 69 & 70 I explain it even deeper Cluelessman.
I remember why I called you Karma Klueless. Your Stupid Karma radiates through pixels. Naturally Stupid. Are you a distant cousin to the late Rachel Corrie?
I CALL BULLSHIT PUDDYWHACKO. THE PRECEDING SENTENCE:

I NEVER CALLED MYSELF A WHITE MAN EITHER. NOTICE THAT UP ABOVE I PUT IT IN QUOTES. I DON’T LUMP MYSELF IN WITH ANGLO-SAXONS OR NORTHERN EUROPEANS. THEY WOULDN’T LUMP ME IN WITH THEIR KIND. WHY SHOULD I DO THE SAME?
NOW. YOU CALLED ME A WHITE MAN. THAT IS WHY I PUT IT IN QUOTES.
S’OK. DO WHATEVER YOU PLEASE. I KNOW WHO I AM.
SORRY. CORRECTION.
YOU CALLED ME A “LILLY WHITE BOY”.
WHEN HAVE I EVER MADE AN ISSUE OF YOUR SKIN COLOR?
Will,
Gun nuts are like wingnuts: Logic and reason are totally irrelevant. You worship guns, so it’s the only reality. Everybody else is at best, misguided, and probably evil, fools.
I was at SCCC yesterday; I wasn’t terribly concerned about a small vague threat penned on a toilet paper dispenser in a bathroom stall. I support the right to own weapons and the right to bear arms, though I myself am not packing. I thought a bit about possible scenarios, should the worst occur.
Scenario: You are in class. You hear gunshots. You pull out your pistol, check carefully, then step into the hall. A door slams open and someone enters the hall with a firearm, sees you, and raises the weapon to point directly at you. Do you yell, “Stop or I will shoot you?” If the other person is a suicidal murderer, you have died without finishing your sentence.
Scenario: You are in class. You hear gunshots, secure weapon, step into hall with your weapon. A person already in the hall (see above) raises the weapon to point directly at you. Do you yell, “Stop or I will shoot you?” See above….
In a situation with an unknown number of unknown shooters and an unknown number of armed “good guys”, shots heard, adrenaline flowing, and a determination to protect oneself and one’s friends, I would expect several casualties of friendly fire.
Armed uniformed security, okay (if they were properly trained and competent); armed faculty and staff, maybe (but most in academia would be neither capable nor willing); on-campus armed general student population, not safe, not desirable, not acceptable.
STRATFORD, Conn. (AP) – An off-duty New Haven police officer shot and critically wounded his 18-year-old daughter, apparently mistaking her for an intruder after she sneaked out of their Stratford home and re-entered through the basement.
Will’s a Republican! Congratulations!
