The craziest people in the PNW are all nicely sequestered here at HA for convenient future round-up and transport to re-education camps.

    We have a little list…

You, Puddybud, Janet S, and who else? And don’t worry about us taking you to re-education camps. If you couldn’t be educated the first time, there’s little use in trying again.

    We have a little list…

    You’ve got a little something.

Here’s my favorite tidbit from that gathering of loons (emphasis added):

Star Parker, a former welfare cheat who had multiple abortions, claimed to me that abortion is the leading cause of death among African American women between the ages of 25 and 34. Then she described her wish for the forced quarantine of all “sodomites.” Parker was not a lone wacko milling around in the hallway; she was a speaker invited by the Family Research Council.

That’s a claim that can be easily examined … and dismissed as utterly, completely, absolutely, totally wrong.

So let’s look at how many abortion-associated deaths occur in the United States. The most recent report from the CDC gives us mortality data from 2001-2002:

During 2001–2002 (the most recent years for which data are available), 15 women died as a result of complications from known legal induced abortion. One death was associated with known illegal abortion.

That’s right … 16 abortion-related deaths in a two year period, for all ages and all races. The researchers actually examined some 40 reports from those two years, dropping 12 that turned out to be spontaneous abortions (miscarriages), 11 unrelated to abortion, and one undetermined death. With such a tiny number of deaths, there was really no point in subdividing by age or race.

In a typical year, there are somewhere around 3000 deaths in that age-sex-race group (see page 21 of this national vital statistics report for the 2004 count of 3241). According to the CDC, HIV accounted for 436 of those deaths, unintentional injuries (mostly car crashes) for 407, cancer 402, heart disease 383, homicide 282 (almost 2/3 firearms). Those five causes account for almost 60% of deaths in that age-race-sex group. Even if all abortion-related deaths in a year occurred among 25034 year old black women, they would still be a very small proportion of total mortality in the group.

IOW, as I said above, Star Parker is utterly, completely, absolutely, totally wrong.

The national leadership of the “Christian” right must secretly offer up a prayer of thanks every day that there still are abortions, gays and dark-skinned immigrants in our country for them to use to whip up their followers into self-ordained righeous frenzy. Otherwise they’d have to campaign on a legacy of how badly their wunderkind have fucked everything up.

If those things were gone, they’d find something else to hate. It’s the basis of their belief system. Us versus Them. Us remains the same, but Them can be anything their leadership wants. Like Liberals. Or Atheists. Or Presbyterians.

5 Alas, you’re probably right. There seems to be an element of collective ego gratification: “We’re the good guys! We’re fighting the evildoers! We’re the chosen ones! We’re gonna get to go up in the Rapture!”

It’s the exact opposite of what Jesus taught his desciples.

@1 (continued) Don’t you just love it when wingnut cowards who don’t have the guts to go within 1/2 mile of a recruiter’s office puff out their chests and tell us they’re going to put us in concentration camps?

8 “Yeah, sure. Where are you guys gonna get an army?”

Well, that’s pretty simple. Blackwater mercenaries, paid via what Lloyd Bentson famously referred to as “hot checks”.

“At the Summit, I witnessed all of the major Republican presidential candidates compete for the affection of so-called value voters. Rudy Giuliani, the current frontrunner, sought to assuage movement leaders’ concerns about his multiple marriages, pro-choice politics, and penchant for cross-dressing. Mitt Romney pledged to fight for a Constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, hoping his newfound conservatism would somehow lessen evangelical resentment of his Mormon faith.”

    (see link in main thread)

I see these guys are addressing the issues really weighing on non-mainstream America — while the rest of us worry about the wingnuts’ botched war in Iraq, the deteriorating economy, and whether the insanity wing of the GOP is going to start World War III by nuking Iran.

@3: The thing about these people is their entire worldview is based on argument from authority. Faith-based facts, if you will.

So when Star Parker claims that abortions are the number 1 killer of black women in the 25-34 age range, they all just nod because she must be right or she wouldn’t be saying it.

A willful suspension of disbelief kind of comes with the territory.
