Well, at UW and at campuses across the country, Islamofascism Awareness Week has come and gone, with no increasing awareness that anyone has noticed regarding the shibboleth of “Islamofascism.” But there’s been plenty of “awareness” (or at least air time) given to its sponsor, David Horowitz. Now, via Talking Points Memo, we know why. In an interview with the George Washington University student paper The Hatchet, Horowitz says:
“I’m a prominent conservative but no one is inviting me to speak at their campuses, [so] I had to create an event.”
There you have it. Horowitz acts not out of concern for the safety of the republic, but to enrich himself, in this case through speaking gigs. All that’s missing is a cozy Bush administration regulatory appointment to feather the nest for himself and his friends. Oh – wait – the whole point is that Horowitz doesn’t seem to have friends. Hence the public spectacle to create invitations.
And funny how if you substitute the word “events” for “campuses,” and “organization” for “event,” Horowitz’s words could have come right out of Dino Rossi’s mouth circa Forward Washington days. Hmm.

Say what you like; you’re entitled to your opinon of Horowitz. But he’s also entitled to speak when invited as he recently was at Emory University only to be shouted down.
Recently, Bill Clinton was speaking on behalf of HRC someplace in Iowa only to be interupted and heckled by 9/11 conspiracy theorists. Bill Maher had a similar encounter during the taping of his HBO program.
I’m the first to admit that neither are favorites of mine, but they have the absolute right to speak at forums where they’re either invited or employed, and I heartily applaud how both of them pushed back by calling B.S. not only on the disruptive behavior, but also on the sleazy “inside job” crap they were spouting.
It’s about time for everyone who believes in the free expression of ideas to come to the defense of any who’s rights in this regard are trashed, and this specifically includes David Horowitz.
If you don’t like what he says, that’s your right, and you can, in an appropriate context, refute him, decry him, denounce him or otherwise speak your piece.
But if you think it’s OK to disrupt him while he’s speaking, force him off a stage, threaten him, or otherwise interfere with him expressing himself, then all bets are off for you, too.
It’s doubly disgraceful that these episodes occur and go unpunished on college and university campuses. In what are supposed to be bastions of learning and the free exchange of thought, instead what’s found all too often is a tolerance of prejudice and the turning of an official blind eye at the suppression of unpopular speech or speech that offends some.
Where is it written that anyone has the right not to be offended? Or that they have the right to crush the freedoms of others, not only preventing some from speaking, but also preventing those who wish to hear from learning?
This behavior is facism, pure and simple.
If any among you are so deeply offended by Horowitz’s Islamo-Facism Week, then appropriately argue against it then let the court of public opinion initially decide while letting history be the ultimate judge.
Let the man – let all men and women – speak.
