Wednesday Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 1/14/26, 8:25 am

So, etiquette question: I was biking to Drinking Liberally and it was dark out. It was still a bit crowded on the bike lane. I was behind someone with their light turned off. Should I have said something?

Anyway…

  • ICE is not welcome in Seattle. And they are going to have a hard time getting convictions.
  • A proper parole system would be better, but I do like Rep. Tarra Simmons’s bill to let prisoners petition for early release if a judge finds that they are no longer a threat to their community.
  • If you’re on Bluesky, Representative Julia Reed has some good informative threads about the legislature.

Remember how on Monday I said that you could contact your legislators? Great news, you can do it today!

Male voters, especially young men, played a decisive role in Trump’s 2024 victory…

Mythology. Lying to support feels. Trump percentage among young males in terms of share was unexpected. But Trump turnout among them essentially was unchanged. Young males inclined to vote for Harris declined to vote. Many/most were not even aware that she was the Dem candidate.

In terms of the electorate the GOP is actually incredibly weak and vulnerable right now thanks mostly to Trump. But they control all three branches of the federal government and they are obviously unafraid to use that power in whatever way suits them including many ways that are nakedly unlawful. The conduct of elections continues to be vested in the states by law. And the potential for a shift in both affiliation and turnout could upend the GOP control over the government very quickly.

I suspect that much of the innaction among Dem leadership is out of a sense of fear that by doing anything they might reverse what are for them very positive trends. But I do not think the Democratic leadership is doing nearly enough at the state level to protect the integrity of elections.

The MAGASTAPO is carrying out armed slave-catcher patrols without even administrative warrants, breaking into homes, breaking into cars, breaking into businesses and schools and just grabbing the first vulnerable looking non-white they see. DOJ has already determined ahead of any kind of investigation, that they will not do anything about the murder, prompting a wave of mass resignations. So why would this physician put himself, his family, and his career at risk by volunteering to feed a media frenzy?

He identified himself as a physician willing to provide life saving treatment at the scene and the MAGASTAPO agents controlling the scene threatened him with arrest to prevent it. They blocked the scene with their vehicles forcing the EMTs to walk from blocks away. We all saw it. It’s on record as a fact.

Why do you suppose it is so important for MAGA white supremacists to learn his identity? Hockey sticks, fire extinguishers, and fire bombs come to mind.

Politically, we were very conservative, very Republican. As good Mormons, we were waiting for Jesus to come back any day. I didn’t think I’d live long enough to have grandkids.

White supremacy was baked into our belief system. The Book of Mormon says white people are better, and dark-skinned people are cursed. We were anti-abortion and we thought homosexuality was the most evil thing in the world. I spent a lot of time and money helping fight Proposition 8 (which would have legalized same-sex marriage) in California.

We listened to Rush Limbaugh all the time — never missed an episode. I listened to Glenn Beck quite a bit. My granddad, who was one of my best friends, was ultra-conservative. I listened exclusively to Fox News when it came along. I never watched the mainstream networks or CNN.

To be honest, I didn’t have a lot of time to think about politics, because mostly I was really busy keeping my house clean and doing my hair and nails and cooking every meal from scratch, raising chickens and babies.

Nor does it make sense, because videos show her car moving too slowly to cause a significant impact injury. Prison sentences aren’t just to get dangerous people off the streets, they’re also punishment for severely antisocial behavior, and such leniency can be a slap in the face to the victims. If a robber beats the shit out of an old lady to steal her purse, I’d make him do the time, even if he swears he reformed in prison and will behave better in the future. Also, although against the Death Penalty myself, had no sympathy for any Fuhrman commutations that got parole and re-offended. They blew their second chance, and in a few cases, appeals courts agreed. Also, one way to wreck an appeal, escape, as the Virginia inmates learned. One was recaptured within 5 miles of the Canadian border, but in 1984, Canada, while an abolitionist country, was still extraditing people facing execution. They didn’t start demanding assurances until 2001.

@9 To date, news reports indicate at least 170 U.S. citizens have been arrested by ICE on suspicion of being illegals, and some have been kept in custody by ICE for up to three days. Some of those arrested have complained ICE refused to accept their driver licenses and/or passports as proof they’re citizens.

ICE has no jurisdiction over U.S. citizens. By statute, ICE agents can arrest a citizen only if they assault an agent or impede ICE operations. Mistaken identity doesn’t count.

In addition, the Fourth Amendment applies to ICE. That means ICE cannot legally detain a person on a hunch or suspicion they might be an illegal immigrant; they must have some factual basis to justify an investigatory stop.

When local police violate the rights of members of the public, the §1983 lawsuit settlements for false arrest and false imprisonment typically range from about $75,000 to $500,000. If we take a rough media of say $225,000, ICE has already incurred over $38 million of potential damages in those 170 cases alone.

This will skyrocket if ICE starts kicking in doors of residences without search warrants and manhandling the children and shooting the dogs inside.

Republicans don’t seem to care. They will oppose paying out any money in settlements, crying that we can’t afford the deficits. So far, they haven’t made a squeak about Trump wanting a 50% increase in defense spending, or the prospect of what wars in Venezuela, Iran, or against NATO in Greenland might cost.

We shouldn’t forget this regime, during its war against Iran, cleared minefields by having their young men walk in front of their troops and find the mines by stepping on them. In short, human life is cheap in that country.

So what? Those people kidnapped American diplomats. They’ve supported Hezbollah and harassed American warships. Fuck ’em. It’s not our job to save them from their dictators. And Trump has no such motivation. If he spends American lives and treasure to topple Iran’s regime, it’ll be for one reason: To grab their oil. He doesn’t give a shit about dead Iranians. And I don’t give a shit for their oil, so no. No military adventure in Iran.

@58 Why does Putin want Ukraine ?

Several reasons. Ukraine is on his border, and he doesn’t want NATO there. Ukraine controls access to the Black Sea, Russia’s warm-water access to the oceans.

Putin especially wants the Donbas region, whose population is nearly 40% ethnic Russian, where the predominant language is Russian, and coalfields and heavy industry are concentrated.

Historically, Ukraine was the heart of the Russian state and culture, and Kiev was Russia’s capitol. Today, a significant percentage of Ukraine’s population are ethnic Russians. Ukraine was a crucial part of the Soviet empire that Putin wants to restore.

And now, Putin has invested his personal power, political future, and several hundred thousand Russian lives in retaking Ukraine. For those reasons, he can’t walk away from what he started there. He would be overthrown, and likely killed, if he did.

67)I was recently checking back on the incident between the SPD Undercover and a Metro Driver, good thing they have external cameras, and a passenger was recording the internal altercation after the cop boarded the bus. First the driver didn’t see the lights, the cop turned on after the driver honked his horn after being cut off, which was Metro Regs, and I am not sure, the RCW. The cop accused him of fleeing, when confronted at the next stop. Unfortunately the driver was suspended because he didn’t follow another rule, not apologizing to the cop whose reckless driving started The encounter, he failed to comply with law enforcement. In that situation. How is the driver supposed to know which rule to follow if they conflict, because it maybe a 50% chance of picking the wrong one, and a 100% chance of disciplinary action. So far, what follow up I found, both their unions settled any disciplinary action. Only thing I don’t want Local 587 protecting a driver on is a fatal wreck.

    71) Paul Doumer and Thabh HOA Bridges, lost many pilots KIA or MIA trying to take it out with unguided bombs, and one sortie with Laser guided bombs in 1972 took them out for the duration. In Tom Clancy’s Fighter Wing, the mini novel was a Second Vietnam War, with Hanoi isolated in one night by one squadron of F-117s. The SAM Batteries ineffective,(He wrote it before Kosovo, so no one heard of the lucky shot.). Loved that mini novel, written to show what the experimental 366th Wing could do. At the time, Air Combat Command grouped a squadron of F-15Cs for Air Superiority, F-16C Block 52s for SEAD, F-15Es for precision strike, and first B-52Gs and later B-1Bs for heavy bombing, plus one squadron of KC-135s. He had the leadership in Hanoi thinking they could crush a revolt launched by a disgruntled postman(Vietcong Veteran), and the airstrikes on Saigon hit a hotel where American veterans were staying (invited by Hanoi before the uprising happened). Hanoi did themselves no favors thinking as the 366th was skirting Vietnamese airspace en route to Thailand, that the rules of engagement would be weapons tight, so they chose to have a frigate lock them on. Turned out, Weapons Hold, and shot back. One Frigate sunk, the other limped into a Southern port with the survivors defecting. Best part was where the leadership relocated to, it was a non-smoking bunker and the only General that knew the USAF changed since Vietnam was a chain smoker.

The best character was the Chief Political Officer of the VNPAF, gave a rousing speech that put Hanoi on a path to war when briefing the pilots who Bombed Saigon(that is what the Disgruntled VC was calling it), but in a battle against F-15Es, was a really good pilot that flew a MiG-29 better than any Iraqi pilot.

The lesson of Minneapolis is that any driver finding themselves on a street with ICE agents should immediately shut the engine off, exit the vehicle, lock it up, and walk away. Whether the car is blocking the street is immaterial. Abandon the fucking car where it sits! Your life is worth more than a towing charge and impound fee. No attempt should be made to move your vehicle out of the way or drive away, because any vehicle movement WILL BE interpreted by the ICE goons as an excuse to open fire and they WILL kill you! Your sole concern is to not get shot, and the only way to ensure your safety is to not be in the vehicle or anywhere near it. So get out of the car, leave the area, and let them deal with the car; they can call the police to have it towed, and you can retrieve it from the towing company storage yard after they’re no longer around.

    Greenland must arm!

Someone’s gonna do it. Why should it be China or Russia?

Danish intel warned last year about Russian and Chinese military goals toward Greenland and Arctic
Denmark’s politicians are downplaying Trump’s claims of Russian and Chinese threats to Greenland. But Danish intelligence warned about Russia and China in stark terms.

While Denmark’s leaders downplay the threat to Greenland posed by Russia and China amidst President Donald Trump’s outspoken desire to acquire the frozen island, Denmark’s Danish Defense Intelligence Service (DDIS) recently released an assessment bluntly warning of Russian and Chinese military ambitions toward and expansion around Greenland and the Arctic.
    …
But the “Intelligence Outlook 2025” report on the security of the Kingdom of Denmark, released just last month, had warned at great length that “China is preparing for a military presence in the Arctic” and that “China’s long-term Arctic interests include Greenland.” The report highlighted Chinese air-based, seaborne, and submersible activities in the Arctic.

The Danish intelligence report had further assessed that the militaries of China and Russia were collaborating more closely in the Arctic, displaying the growing “DragonBear” alliance between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The report noted that Russia “uses every available tool to monitor and chart the waters between Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and the United Kingdom” as “part of the preparations for a potential confrontation with NATO” and as the Kremlin deploys submarines, ships, and planes near Greenland.
    …
The Pentagon’s Arctic Strategy — penned in 2024 during the Biden Administration — also warned about growing Russian and Chinese military cooperation in the Arctic.

Writing that “Greenland must arm!” is no more intelligent than writing “Liberals must arm!”. Hell, Darryl will tell you that, too.

Donald Trump is an ass for approaching the issue the way he has. This does not justify dismissal of the military importance of Greenland.

    95,
What follows will be an enlightening view into how the federal district courts apply the other two preliminary hurdles to docketing civil claims in federal court:
    jurisdiction – subject matter jurisdiction i.e. the court’s statutory authority to hear the type of case, and personal jurisdiction i.e. the court’s statutory authority over the litigants;
and tort – the defendant owes a duty of care to the plaintiff, the defendant violated that duty of care, that violation of duty of care led directly to both actual causation of injury to the plaintiff as well as proximate cause of injury, and the plaintiff suffered actual loss arising from the injury.

This invites careful and nuanced analysis of the subtle interplay of competing equities in the claims that closing all the polling places in the places where The Blacks vote grants jurisdiction under the Civil Rights Act (it obviously does) and that closing all those polling places makes it substantially harder for those people to vote, versus the claims that actually counting the valid and lawful votes contained in ballots that are delayed in the mail is “unfair to us white guys” because “we all know that The Blacks are dumb and lazy and wait until the last minute to put their ballots in the mail”.

    I can hardly wait.

In the last two decades of his life, American financier Jeffrey Epstein acted as an informal diplomatic bridge between Israel and the United Arab Emirates—through his intimate friend Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the chairman of DP World and a close associate of the ruler of Dubai….

Epstein was a trusted friend and advisor to Sulayem, but his network appeared to extend across the stratum of Emirati elites. A journalist who visited Epstein in 2013 noted a photograph displayed in the anteroom of his New York mansion, showing Epstein with Mohammed bin Zayed, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, wearing beachwear and snorkel gear.

Awwww. DHS under Kristi Puppyslayer Magatface is calling for neo-nazis to join the “cause”:

the Department of Homeland Security’s official Instagram account made a recruitment post proclaiming “We’ll Have Our Home Again,” attaching a song of the same name by Pine Tree Riots. Popularized in neo-Nazi spaces, the track features lines about reclaiming “our home” by “blood or sweat,” language often used in white nationalist calls for race war.

The post is part of a growing trend in which the federal government openly embraces the visual language of white supremacy and pop culture cited in instances of racial violence.

@79 Donald Trump is an ass for approaching the issue the way he has. This does not justify dismissal of the military importance of Greenland.

Who’s denying Greenland’s military importance? That’s why Denmark has given the U.S. permission to have military bases there, which have existed for decades. No strategic consideration necessitates violating Denmark’s sovereignty or Greenlanders’ autonomy. There is no legitimate reason whatsoever for Greenland to be part of the U.S., and Trump’s threats to take over Greenland by military force make him more than an ass, they make him an imperialist warmonger and a NATO alliance wrecker, which plays right into the hands of Russia and China. Of course, you’ll never admit this, because you’re a groveling MAGAt.

On the other subject you raised, liberals will disarm when the conservatives threatening to kill them disarm, but conservatives have to go first, because they armed first and are the ones making the threats. Until then, you can pry my claws from my cold dead paws.

If we just get out of the way and let them fire up as many energy guzzling dara centers as the land will hold America will be number one. Sprinkle in some of the standard green energy can’t ever match what we have now.

@80 Well, that’s tricky because DJIA has farther to go (1.17% vs. 0.80% for the S&P 500), but lately the DJIA has been rising faster than the S&P 500 (for example, the DJIA was up 0.60% and the S&P 500 up 0.26% today).

My stocks are up 6.82% this year, beating the hell out of both. Year to date, DJIA is up 2.87% and S&P 500 is up 1.45%. I own 5 stocks up double digits, with 2 more up 9% or more; 3 of these are defense-related stocks. I’ve logged six-figure gains in the first 15 days of 2026.

So yes, we capitalists are making out like thieves (which is essentially what we are) from Trump’s saber-rattling, and Wall Street doesn’t give a damn about the violence he’s unleashing in our cities. I didn’t create this rotten situation, but somebody’s going to rake in those obscene profits, so it might as well be me.

How’s your sports and options gambling going? If it doesn’t work out, you’ll be able to feed your transportation by putting the hay and oats on a credit card and pay only 10% interest, if Trump gets his way.

@125 Farther up this thread I posted a link to the ACLU’s class action lawsuit against ICE. Here’s the link again:

    https://assets.aclu.org/live/uploads/2026/01/COMPLAINT-HUSSEN-v.-NOEM-1.pdf

This complaint details ICE’s practices, what it did to the specific complainants (several of whom are U.S. citizens), and delves in detail into why ICE’s actions are unconstitutional and illegal. It begins by characterizing ICE enforcement as “a startling pattern of abuse,” which it is. Here are a couple of excerpts:

DHS’s crude dragnet ensnares noncitizens, including individuals with immigration status, without warrants or any lawful basis for arrest. And its discriminatory practices also sweep in numerous U.S. citizens in the process, shackling them and scanning their faces while ignoring documentation of U.S. citizenship.

    and

Defendants are engaged in a racial profiling campaign of massive scale and with devastating consequences. … These arrests are also being carried out with an unprecedented level of violence. People targeted by ICE have been handcuffed, tackled, and beaten by federal agents. Agents have broken car windows, dragged people from their cars, and used pepper spray and tear gas against compliant, non-violent people.

The complaint also details treatment of detainees, including U.S. citizens, amounting to torture.

I think it goes without saying the district court will find the allegations credible and issue an injunction, which will be appealed, so ultimately the question will be whether the Supreme Court will enforce the Constitution and laws, or allow the abuses to continue. In that regard, I don’t trust the conservative majority. We’ve already seen in numerous cases they’re partisan and care little about our rights.

Before descending on a crowd of counterprotesters at a religious rally last year at Seattle’s Cal Anderson Park, a Seattle police officer said “we’re here to f— people up,” according to new police body camera video obtained by KING 5.

“We’re going in this time with guns blazing and all our pieces in place,” said one Seattle Police Department (SPD) officer around 2:17 p.m. on May 24, 2025. “We are past talking to people, we’re here to f— people up now. We’re done with these guys and the sh– they’re doing. They’ve pushed the envelope and now they’re going to get the full [unintelligible].”

The officer appears to be giving instructions to at least 10 other officers at the MayDay USA event, a religious rally held by On Fire Ministries. KING 5 identified the officer as a member of SPD’s crowd control top brass.
