Monday Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Monday, 12/8/25, 8:30 am

Good morning. I was walking down the waterfront and really admire those of you still on your bicycle in this. And kind of surprised how many people there were. Not  that walking in the yuck is great. Anyway!

  • I think the swap of streetcars between Tacoma and Portland will be good for both cities. Hopefully not a white elephant.
  • Oh man, I look forward to seeing the Moving Stories Metro is producing. Maybe some of you can apply.
  • Carl Ballard approves of Joe Ballard.
  • Thank goodness for the West Coast Healthcare Alliance, Hep B vaccination edition.

Democrats are slowly realizing how many elections they have lost because they embraced the silliness of global warming.

The left’s climate panic is finally calming down

First, recent polling shows that the intensity of climate dread is weakening. According to a July report from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, while a majority (69%) of Americans still say global warming is happening, only 60% say it’s “mostly human-caused”; 28% attribute it mostly to natural environmental changes. A similar October study from the University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute found that “belief in human-driven climate change declined overall” since 2017. Interestingly, Democrats and political independents, not Republicans, were primarily responsible for the decline.

Moreover, public willingness to countenance personal sacrifice in the name of saving the planet seems to be plummeting: An October 2024 poll from the Pew Research Center found that only 45% said human activity contributed “a great deal” to climate change. An additional 29% said it contributed “some” — while a quarter said human influence was minimal or nonexistent.

It was only 5 1/2 years ago when Biden’s soon-to-be-AWOL SecDef called climate change an “existential threat”. How fucking silly.

But he was correct in one sense. The Biden presidency no longer exists.

Say, howz come G-clown hasn’t whined about the price of gas lately?

The nationwide average for regular gas is at its lowest level in 1,681 days — and trending lower. According to GasBuddy, average gas prices have dipped below $3 per gallon in 37 states, below $2.75 per gallon in 22 states, and below $2.50 per gallon in five states.

In fact, Americans can even find gas below $2 per gallon at some stations in at least four states — with prices as low as $1.69 per gallon in Colorado.

Under Biden, gas prices were the highest they had ever been, even after he drained our strategic reserves to artificially decrease prices. So far in President Trump’s second term, Americans on track to spend the lowest amount of their disposable income on gas in the last two decades amid the Trump Administration’s pursuit of American energy dominance.

Prior to 2-4 weeks ago it was $3.15. About 2-4 weeks ago it got as low as $2.95/gallon, then shot up to $3.15 overnight, literally overnight. About 4 weeks ago I filled up midafternoon one day for like $2.95, when later that same day in the evening it went to $3.15, literally in an hour.

I’m surprised and shocked that the Con Man hasn’t gotten it below $2.69 yet, and even after all the increased production by OPEC. Them oil companies have got to increase their pockets.

In their final moments before being shown the door the short lived conservative Seattle city council will approve a 42% raise for the Police Department.

This will all but guarantee a budget shortfall in ‘26-7 as the Trump economy really gets into gear with our sales tax reliant revenue. Dumbfuck will blame Katie Wilson. Bookmark this comment.

The average German citizen supported the Nazi pogroms:

Does the average American citizen support the fascist purges of immigrants?

Polling numbers say no. But then there’s that “30 percent” or so of very strong support.

One detail of comparison is off to my view. No way does an American “volunteer” to guard or manage the local ice or cbp gulag camp.

They wanna be paid. They want that bonus. They love being bought.

In time, many of these shitty decisions might be tempered or reversed but untold damage is done in the meantime.

@59 Cops are not only expensive, they’re also a huge liability.

The San Diego City Council on Tuesday approved a $30 million payment to the family of a 16-year-old killed by police in one of the largest such settlements in US history.

    https://www.cnn.com/2025/12/09/us/california-san-diego-police-killing-settlement

In the case above, a trigger-happy cop reflexively shot a black teenager who ran past him as he was fleeing from gunfire in a train station. The killer is on paid leave and hasn’t been charged with a crime.

I’m just making an observation. The issue of protesters invading political figures’ private lives came up years ago, and I posted then that I’m against that. My position hasn’t changed. As for death threats, it seems to be mostly rightwingers doing that, but yeah, Republican assholes shouldn’t get death threats either.

Working so well that I lifted the restrictions on selling the most advanced nVidia chips to China and China may start buying soybeans again. President Xi totally capitulated to ME and will think about it.

All the national security morons don’t know anything and these chips are nothing compared to the soy China is considering buying.

I also want to thank nVidia for being behind me and Ballroom with their generous donation.

Thank you for your attention on this matter.

A little follow up to my comment on the Streetcar Swap, the two models from the manufacturer websites.
What Sound Transit would be getting from Portland.
    https://www.brookvillecorp.com/products/streetcars/modern-streetcars/

What Portland would be getting from Sound Transit:
    https://www.skodagroup.com/reference/tramcar-elektra-portland

The current Skoda’s were piggybacked on a Portland order, so should be few problems. Plus, Sound Transit should know the maintenance condition of their Skodas, the T-Line is the only service they directly operate. With the Inekon cars used in Seattle (pretty much a copy of the Skoda by another Czech manufacturer), they also were piggybacked on a Portland order, so the traction motors operate on 750V DC, as Portland Streetcar is operated by TriMet on behalf of the City of Portland. Seattle Streetcar is operated by Metro, and perhaps Metro should have flexed a little muscle on the First Hill line. The line follows Jackson St from First Ave to Boren, the corridor trolley bus routes 7, 14, and 36, If all three had been streetcar routes(like they once were), replacing them would require about 33 to 36 vehicles, Metro could have insisted on 600V DC, avoiding voltage conflicts. (Happened with the SLU line as Rt70 crossed it on Virginia) Rt7 is probably most easy to convert, as I don’t know what the condition of the 12th Ave Bridge is for the 36, and the 14 while having the same routing as the Seattle Municipal Railway Rt14 streetcar, Metro has added a loop down McClellan to serve Mount Baker Station. Even if the 7 was converted to a streetcar as a high capacity feeder for LINK, still would have the Upper Rainier Beach loop of the 7 to deal with, but a use of the XT40/XT60s off wire capability would come in handy, when the 1 Line opened, the 39 bus(now the 50) was rerouted to serve Othello Station, leaving a gap between Othello and the 39’s old terminus at Rainier Beach. Have the 36 operate in battery mode on that stretch.

The comparison to the number of “emergency applications” by previous administrations, both Dem and repuke is quite telling.

The comparison to prior judicial overreach frequency is just as telling. If DJT47 took the traditional route to appeal it would not be able to govern. The emergency docket hastens resolution of one silly judge’s order after another, and lets the duly elected government do what it was elected to do.

Want fewer emergency docket cases? Tell the “Resist!” judges to stop making fools of themselves.

You mean dictate, not govern. He can govern constitutionally. That’s the whole purpose of checks and balances. Our system was never intended to be one-man government. That’s what the founding fathers fought the American Revolution to get away from. Gawd, you’re stupid. Did you flunk 9th grade civics?
