Sometimes, certainly the moves pay off. It would be hard for them not to given the relatively rapid appreciation of real estate and equity holdings over the last couple of decades. But as we’ve also seen, he fucks up a lot. And his ego forces him to reveal his mistakes before they turn so obviously tragic. But with an inherited portfolio of property holdings he has access to credit. And when forced into it by his own emotional decision making, he can always sell some of that seed corn to settle a losing transaction.

    Financially, guys like this come in all sizes. The Nazi Fucktard is obviously a lesser example of the species. But from my experience these dudes can paddle along like this for years and even decades, all the while telling themselves somehow that they are “the producers” and “earners” rather than mere “inheritors”. That’s probably at least part of what drives them to dabble in the the market with their “systems” (like degenerate gamblers they all have a system). Even if with any full accounting they are not “beating” the market, attempting to do so while relying on the trust money and holdings to remain liquid supplies them with the needed fiction that they are “men in full” who actually do something.     I’m not saying it’s right or wrong to defund those subsidies. I’m not against employers paying workers what it actually costs them to provide their labor. I’m all for that. I’m only saying it can’t be done at the federal minimum wage; and without taxpayer-funded subsistence subsidies it can’t be done at all. You can’t tunnel through Genessee Park, especially from what I could tell of the suggested routing, would have gone through the fill that once was Wetmore Slough, then through Mt Baker. Since I used to live on 43rd S, I know it was impossible. A streetcar on Genessee as a branch of converted Route 7, doable, since it was done before. The Seattle and Rainier Valley had a branch line, and a siding serving a lumberyard at 42nd. Probably the only route that street ever had that wasn’t adjusted. I have seen old maps from Seattle Municipal Railway, Seattle Transit, and Metro, and that route has been a poster child for one of the rail sides positions, that the route would be hard to move. Seattle MUNI had what is now rt50 run the Seward Park bus via Hudson Street, to avoid competing with the private operator, which was ironic as their Empire Way Bus continued to Downtown on Rainier, competing with the same operator. Then it became the 39, which had had many revisions, but the core of the route Genessee(East of 38th), and 50th S, and Wilson Ave. saw in the 1940 transition, it connected with the 14 at Mt Baker running on 38th S, and it’s Southern terminus was at the city line on Rainier. A 1960s Map had it routed via Beacon Hill, but still southern terminus at Rainier. I like the successor better, the 50 serves West Seattle, and connects with LINK at three stations.

    Another reason why I said the guys Madison Park idea was fantasy, was I don’t think the Lakebed can support a tunnel. One of the reasons we have floating bridges, although 520 in that portion is a viaduct. Although if the Thompson Expressway would have crossed that section in a form of a tunnel. Probably would support a rail tunnel. That coalition’s unlikely success(it was too diverse, too easily could have fallen apart due to infighting), may have contributed to the Seattle Process that stymies these projects today. I got a problem with that coalition, they won the war against the freeway, but lost the Peace. At the time, the restored and expanded bus routes on 23rd Ave S had proven a success, they should have pushed Seattle Transit and later Metro for a bus route on the portion of Empire Way(only using it because the name change would not happen for another decade). The activists that got the 48 created, got a problem with them, they weren’t greedy, should have lobbied for Empire too, but they had a better case in that day for only 23rd Ave S. MLK Jr Way North would get a bus route in the 90s, but Metro showed they did it under Protest. Activists call the route the L8 for a reason. Rt8 is always late, but that’s the Denny Way and Capitol Hill portions, not MLK. RT48 is supposed to be electrified soon, but not with battery buses, The poles are already in place on the wire gaps, don’t know if they have sites for the extra traction power substations, but they don’t need much space. I went looking for a few, the best use of a existing asset had to be Letitia on Rt7, on the grounds of a sewage pump station (Since this was old Metro that re-electrified the 7).

    I’ll admit, it’s frustrating that the Cross Lake Connection isn’t operational yet, I believe it’s the last, or one of the last ST2 projects uncompleted, the Downtown Redmond Extension is a ST3 project and it opened this year, Federal Way is a hybrid of 2 and 3, it opens later this year, with the bus hub at Federal Way already operating. It’s almost like the hub at Northgate Station, bus riders transferring to LINK will like the easy connection, those using the Parking Garage, not so much, they will have to walk a little further.

    Apples and oranges. People earn these things from employment after entering the workforce. While some college students pay their expenses by working, the majority fall into two classes: Those whose parents paid for their education, and those without well-heeled parents who went into debt to pay for their education.

    Education isn’t just a private good, an educated workforce is of broad public benefit, which is why government traditionally has invested taxpayer money in education, which has long been considered an excellent investment.

    If higher education is limited to those from families with means, you’re going to have less merit and more stupidity in C suites, lower managerial roles, political leadership, and staffing the professions and public agencies, simply because you’re drawing from a smaller demographic pool.

    You’ll also have less socioeconomic mobility, resulting in increased social tensions, and less faith in the capitalist system. Part of what sustains the system is opening up opportunities to all.

    The correct way to look at education is to see access to education as something vital for our economy, national security, and social cohesion; and we should be recruiting students just as we recruit people to serve in the military, instead of treating education as a consumer good for those who can afford it.
