  1. One of my right wing relatives forwarded an e-mail to me today that claimed that Candidate Obama said this on meet the press that he thinks the flag is a symbol of oppression, that he’s attended flag burning ceremonies and:

    “It’s my intention, if elected, to disarm America to the level of acceptance to our Middle East Brethren.”

    Even though we deal with the moronic fringe of society Puddy I’m amazed that this several year old bit still circulates. No matter what you think of any president, this sounds reasonable to people? Sounds reasonable that this wasn’t a 24/7 McCain ad during the election? Do a simple google check before passing it along?

    I just responded with relevant Snopes-type links and, “I feel bad that you are so intellectually incurious that you didn’t think for a second that this might not be true.”

    Those who know Sarah and Todd best trust and like them least. They are bullies who revel in inspiring fear among many who know them.

    Like both their parents’ families, Todd and Sarah’s marriage and family are completely dysfunctional and the “family values” they seek to convey are a complete fraud. Todd is apparently a wanton womanizer.

    Sarah’s religious extremism is much more significant than the media has portrayed; not only her “young earth creationist” beliefs, but the in-depth discussions of her Dominionist beliefs and espousal of witchcraft, are very disturbing and are seen as extreme even by far-right evangelicals.

    Her mayoral term was a “reign of terror,” with the firings of anyone who disagreed with her religious or other views and appointments of unqualified cronies. The list of those she used and then discarded is long: John Stein, Laura Chase, Irl Stambaugh, John Cramer, Lyda Green, John Bitney and many, many others.

    The possibility of legal action regarding perjury during Troopergate may have played a role in Palin’s decision to quit the governorship.

    Levi doesn’t come off as an angel but all the things he said about the dysfunction in the Palin household are totally affirmed by others.

    Maybe my first controversy came in 1966 when I was a sportswriter for the Philadelphia Bulletin and reported that Wilt Chamberlain had refused to attend a special foul shooting practice called by his coach during a playoff series against the Celtics. In the sixth game, Wilt went 6 for 28 from the foul line and the 76ers were eliminated. If he’d shot even fifty percent, they would have won. In the locker room afterward, someone asked him if it was true that he’d refused to attend the special practice. He spotted me, the source of that story, and ordered me to leave the locker room. I refused. He lost his temper, jumped up and took a swing at me. Wilt was 7-3, 320 pounds. Five guys jumped on him and restrained him.

    So, you know, I don’t exactly quiver when confronted by Tiny Todd Palin.

  16. # 1: I heard a lady last week that was absolutely convinced that Obama had said somewhere in a speach that he didn’t believe in the Bible and thought there was more truth in the Koran. She claimed to have seen excerpts of that speech on YouTube, but “of course, it was taken down because of the control the Democrats have on the media”. She proclaimed that Obama, and our country by extension, was cursed because he had denied the divinity of Christ and the only way for our country to remove the curse was to get him out of office by any means necessary. I presume she meant voting him out or impeachment, I doubt she meant anything more sinister.

    But how do you argue with that???? They are absolutely convinced in their beliefs, and any evidence to the contrary will be dismissed without consideration. I think the best we can do is not try to argue with those like her (who will never be persuaded), but instead focus on those who aren’t so locked into their positions.

    It’s the sheer stupidity that gets me. If I received an email that quoted George W. Bush saying,

    “the best thing about Skull and Bones is that was the one period in my life I enjoyed the pleasure of love with another man. And in our rituals we routinely flogged the Muslims we could find around campus. As president, it is my intention to drop “newclear” ordinance on all countries with under 80% Christian populace.”

    My gut reaction would be, nah. That can’t really be true. Let’s not hit forward til it checks out.

    A St. Augustine woman, 96, is charged with Sunday’s fatal shooting of her nephew who feared her moodiness and grew frustrated when he said authorities failed to help, a neighbor and the victim’s boss said.

    But city police Cmdr. Steve Fricke said his agency and the Department of Children and Families had no basis to remove Amanda Rice Stevenson from Johnny Rice’s John Street home in West Augustine. Fricke also said there are no police records of Rice complaining about his aunt.

    A Children and Families worker went to the home Sept. 8 for a report that Stevenson, not Rice, had been mistreated, Fricke said. The worker left after Stevenson said she was fine and threatened to use a gun if he trespassed, Fricke said. The agency returned the next day to attempt to hospitalize the woman under the state’s Baker Act, though the outcome of that effort remains unclear, records show.

    Stevenson is accused of killing Rice, 53, while he lay in bed. Police discovered Rice’s body about 9 p.m. after his wife reported that he was blocking her entrance to their bedroom and was cold to the touch.

    “Matching up a terrorist with a shoulder-fired missile, that’s our worst nightmare,” Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., told ABCNews.com

    The missiles that went missing are Libyan missiles, not US ones. They went missing in large part because we couldn’t put US troops on the ground in Libya to guard them. We couldn’t put troops on the ground to guard them because Republicans were pitching a fit and didn’t want us to have any part of what was going on in Libya.

    If the Republicans had had their way we wouldn’t even know that there are missiles floating around on the loose. And you’re complaining about Obama?

    1. It’s been well document (by video) that at least one popular GOP candidate for President is in favor of having an uninsured patient die rather than rendering govermental assistance to pay for his care. The cheers and applause at the Republican debate show this isn’t a small minority clique that holds that belief.

    2. When a soldier serving in Iraq asks the Republican candidates a question (via video), he is roundly booed – because he is gay.

    3. Let’s not forget the Dec. 2010 Republican demand that no extension of unemployment benefits would pass unless the rich got an extension on their tax breaks – a position worthy of ascribing to Scrooge in the holiday season.

    There are others, but more important to this discussion is how the Republican candidates all started piling in on Perry because he signed a bill granting in-state tuition to undocumented students who meet all other criteria. Perry’s response was that anyone who wants to deny an education to an innocent student, who’s only crime was to be brought into the U.S. by his/her parents without any say in the manner, “had no heart”.

    Now all the right-wingers are piling on Perry for stating the obvious – that they have no heart.

    Of course, there never was such a thing as “compassionate conservatism”. It was simply campaign sloganeering by Karl Rove to make George W. Bush seem at least marginally acceptable to independent voters. But at this point the Republicans have discarded any pretense to that ideology.

    Leisha Hailey, best known for playing Alice Pieszecki in the now defunct Showtime lesbian life drama “The L Word,” asked her Twitter followers to boycott Southwest Airlines after the encounter Monday.

    The airline responded that Hailey’s display of affection was excessive and drew customer complaints.

    The actress and her partner, Camila Grey, denied in a statement released Tuesday that the affection they showed toward each other was inappropriate.

    “We want to make it clear we were not making out or creating any kind of spectacle of ourselves, it was one modest kiss,” the written statement said. “We are responsible adult women who walk through the world with dignity. We were simply being affectionate like any normal couple.”

    Hailey and Grey acknowledge they became upset after the flight attendant reprimanded them. They said the attendant told them that Southwest is a “family airline.”

    “No matter how quietly homophobia is whispered, it doesn’t make it any less loud,” the statement said. “You can’t whisper hate. We ask this airline to teach their employees to not discriminate against any couple, ever, regardless of their own beliefs.”

    To most of the world, Salt Lake City may be known for Mormons, skiing or maybe the Utah Jazz.

    But one characteristic that the world, and even some residents, may not have guessed is this: Salt Lake City has the third-highest rate of same-sex couples among America’s mid-size cities (those with populations between 100,000 and 250,000).

    Salt Lake City — the capital of conservative Utah — ranks in the top 10 for same-sex couples with such well-known liberal places as Berkeley, Calif.; Cambridge, Mass.; and Madison, Wis.

    “It doesn’t surprise me,” says Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker. “I have known as mayor, and as anyone here who pays attention also knows, that we have a relatively large and active LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] community.”

    President Obama declared last Tuesday to the UN the Libyan people are “free from a tyrant” even though ousted leader Muammar Gaddafi remains on the loose.

    Obama also defended his Libyan actions last Tuesday, saying the U.S. was “proud to play a decisive role, especially in the first days, and, then, in a supporting capacity.”

    A lot of support…losing 20,000 missles.
    Plus, many Democrats were also on Obama’s case about Libya being an unauthorized war. Obama should have gone to Congress. Instead he dicked around and now look what happened.

    Now, let’s compare that with Iraq, where the U.S. DID have a very substantial presence on the ground, and still failed to secure unguarded warehouses and huge storage depots of all manner of weapons, including not only shoulder-fired anti-aircraft weapons, but also anti-tank weapons, land mines, artillary shells, small arms of every variety and virtually unlimited ammunition, etc.

    And while we are at it, let’s point out that under Ronald Reagan, stinger missles were given to Muhadeen rebels fighting the Soviets, only to have them cause considerable concern to the U.S. when U.S. forces entered Afganistan to kick out the Taliban.

    Oh, and dare we broach the whole subject of the original arms-for-hostages dealings by the Reagan administration, where they gave arms and spare parts to Iran in violation of U.S. law (and ensuring that more U.S. citizens would be taken hostage)? Or the switch were the Reagan administration decided that it preferred a stalemate in the Iran/Iraq war, and provided real-time intelligence on Iranian military movements to the Iraqis, along with other weapons?

    I don’t see any reason we should defend Obama’s actions, the US played a role in getting a really horrid tyrant out of power. A really horrid tyrant that plenty of American Righties were starting to cozy up too. ;-)

    There’s two choices here. The US could have followed the lead of the right who had been cozying up to Momar and done nothing or they could go the Obama route. I’m glad we went the Obama route.
