“The David Goldstein Show” tonight, on Newsradio 710-KIRO

by Goldy — Sunday, 7/9/06, 1:17 pm

[UPDATE: Sen. Cantwell to call in at 8:07PM.]

It’s a jam-packed lineup tonight on “The David Goldstein Show”– Newsradio 710-KIRO, from 7PM to 10PM — lots to talk about and lots of people to talk with.

7PM: Why does President Bush hate working Americans? Kathy Casavante of the AFL-CIO’s Voice@Work Campaign will join me to explain administration efforts to redefine the word “supervisor” so as to take away the right to organize from millions of workers. Later on in the hour we’ll be joined by nurses from Virginia Mason Medical Centers, whose proposal to reclassify all 600 registered nurses as supervisors is nothing more than a naked attempt to bust the local and state nursing union.

8PM: Democratic challenger and putative anti-war candidate Mark Wilson just dropped out of the race, endorsed Sen. Maria Cantwell, and announced his intention to campaign full time on her behalf. I’ll talk with Sen. Maria Cantwell at the top of the hour, and then Mark join me to take your calls and answer the question: What changed his mind?

9PM: You say you want a progressive revolution? Progressive Majority Executive Director Gloria Totten joins me to tell us what her organization is doing to turn our nation around from the ground up, by training and supporting local progressive candidates in local races. And later on I’ll ask the question if, in addition to all the grassroots, hard-work, infrastructure building… maybe Democrats also have to start getting dirty?

Tune in tonight (or listen to the live stream) and give me a call: 1-877-710-KIRO (5476).

UPDATE:
Sen. Cantwell is now joining me at the top of the 8PM hour, and I’ve moved Gloria Totten to the 9PM hour to make accomodate the Senator’s schedule.

    Mr Goldstein,

In your propagand piece on the fluffington blog, you fail to mention that the Ken Lay dirty deeds were done under the Clinton administration (Clinton had lobbied India to allow Enron’s electric plant in Bhopal India), but he was prosecuted under the Bush administration.

No amount of mean spirited spin can change those facts.

Enron and Lay Were Strong Supporters of Bush and Republicans. Kenneth Lay, Enron’s CEO, was a Bush Pioneer in 2000, raising at least $100,000 for the Bush Presidential campaign. Enron gave $1,114,490 to the RNC, $300,000 to the Bush inaugural, and $113,800 directly to Bush’s presidential campaign from Enron employees. Lay was also a co-chairman of an April 2000 RNC gala tribute to Bush, meaning that he raised or contributed at least $250,000 for that event. At the time, Enron was Bush’s largest career patron. Furthermore, as the Financial Times reported, “Perhaps the greatest example of Mr. Lay’s cache was an affectionate nickname from President Bush – ‘Kenny Boy’ – which reflected his close ties to the White House as both a donor and adviser.” [San Diego Union-Tribune, 2/11/01; Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 4/27/00; Financial Times, 7/8/04; Center for Responsive Politics, http://www.crp.org; Political Money Line, http://www.tray.com]

Lay Donated More Than $120,000 to Bush’s Gubernatorial Campaigns. Bush ran for Governor of Texas in 1994 and 1998. Enron CEO Kenneth Lay donated $122,500 to his campaign and Enron was a “Gold” sponsor for both gubernatorial inaugural committees that cost a total of $100,000. [USA Today, 11/30/01; Texas State Archives, “1995 Texas Inaugural Committee;” “1999 Texas Inaugural Committee”]
Bush Used Enron Corporate Jet as Presidential Candidate. In 1999, as a presidential candidate, the Bush campaign used Enron’s corporate jet for campaign purposes. According to a study by the Center for Responsive Politics, Bush used the Enron corporate jet “eight times last year [1999], trips for which they were reimbursed” $25,302. Enron spokeswoman Karen Denne said that Bush personally approached Enron CEO Kenneth Lay and asked for use of the jet. [Washington Post, 2/1/00]
Enron Contributed Over $3 Million to GOP/Bush Sr. and W. in Ten-Year Span. From 1992-2002, Enron contributed a total $3,021,108 to the Republican National Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Bush-Quayle ‘92 and George W. Bush 2000. [Campaign Study Group, 1/02]

Bush and Lay Met in the 1980s. According to the New York Times, “The relationship between Mr. Bush and Mr. Lay is close, and old: the two men got to know each other in the 1980’s, when Mr. Lay was a big political supporter of Governor Bush’s father, former President George Bush.” [New York Times, 6/30/00]

Lay Worked to Get Bush Library in Houston in 1989, Committed Funds in 1990. As early as July 1989, Ken Lay was leading a charge to bring the Bush presidential library to the University of Houston. In 1990, Lay, as University of Houston system Board of Regents chairman, announced that the board had committed $35 million toward the library. George H. W. Bush announced that Texas A&M in College Station would house his presidential library in spring of 1991. [Dallas Morning News/AP, 4/27/90; Chicago Tribune, 7/3/89; Houston Chronicle, 12/9/93]

Lay Worked With Bush on Houston Convention in 1992. According to the Houston Chronicle, “An ally of the elder George Bush, Lay worked closely with George W. Bush during the Republican National Convention in Houston in 1992, when Lay co-chaired the host committee.” Another Houston Chronicle story says, “Lay, a friend of Bush’s father, became close to the Oval Office’s current occupant in 1992. Lay was serving as co-chair of the host committee for the Republican National Convention in Houston, where the elder Bush was nominated for a second term.” [Houston Chronicle, 4/15/01; 12/29/01]

Lay Gave Cheney a Memo That Called for Rejection of Price Caps; Memo Was Integrated Into Energy Plan. During a meeting between then-Enron CEO Kenneth Lay and Cheney in April 2001, Lay gave Cheney a memo that outlined some of Enron’s positions on energy. Included in the Enron memo were notes on price caps negative impact on energy markets. “The administration should reject any attempt to re-regulate wholesale power markets by adopting price caps or returning to archaic methods of determining the cost-base of wholesale power,” the memo said. “Events in California and in other parts of the country demonstrated that the benefits of competition have yet to be realized and have not yet reached consumers,” the memo said. Cheney’s energy plan advocated against price caps and calls for a bail out for energy consumers in California. [San Francisco Chronicle, 1/30/02]

Ralph Reed Lobbied For Enron. After receiving a recommendation from Karl Rove, Enron hired former Christian Coalition executive director and current candidate for Georgia Lt. Governor Ralph Reed for lobbying services. According to the New York Times, “Associates of Karl Rove, Mr. Bush’s top political adviser, said he had recommended a lucrative consulting contract with Enron for Ralph Reed, the Republican strategist, as Mr. Bush was weighing whether to run for president.” In an October 23, 2000 memo to Enron, Reed wrote, “We are a loyal member of your team and are prepared to do whatever fits your strategic plan. … In public policy, it matters less who has the best arguments and more who gets heard — and by whom.” [New York Times, 1/25/02; Washington Post, 2/10/02; 2/17/02]

An interesting juxtapositon, Enron on a trade mission with Clinton in 2000, before the scandal broke vs. Ken Lay the Bush Pioneer and campaign plane lender.

As it turned out, Enron backed out of the deal a year later because the Indians refused to pay, a situation that has a local ring to it.

About the same time Clinton went to India and was received like a rock star.

ANJAR, India, April 4 [2001]- Thousands of people, precariously balanced on mountains of rubble in this earthquake-ravaged town, chanted ”Clinton, Clinton!” as the former president toured the ruins today, solemnly laying roses in a lane where 150 schoolchildren were buried alive when the ground shook on Jan. 26.

Bill Clinton still draws adoring throngs of ordinary Indians a year after he became the first American president to visit this country of one billion people in 22 years.

This time, he came as chairman of the new American India Foundation, which was formed by wealthy Indian-American entrepreneurs, executives and doctors. They have set themselves a goal of raising $50 million to rebuild 100 of the 1,000 villages that were destroyed.

For the people here, Mr. Clinton was simply a good man who was coming to their aid. In Ratnal, a prosperous village of truck drivers and farmers that was flattened by the earthquake, clusters of elderly men in white turbans, women in the traditional mirrored and embroidered dress of the region and young workers taking a day off lined the road for a glimpse of Mr. Clinton.

In the town of Anjar, admirers broke through the police barricades to encircle and touch Mr. Clinton.

He finished up in Bhuj with a tour of the Red Cross field hospital. In his last words, as he tried to explain why he gone so far from home to find people to help, he said, “I’m just trying to find something useful to do in a place I care about.”

FEDERAL DEFICIT DROPS AS REVENUES SURGE

“WASHINGTON — An unexpectedly steep rise in tax revenues from corporations and the wealthy is driving down the budget deficit this year, even though spending has climbed sharply because of the war in Iraq and hurricane relief.

“On Tuesday, White House officials are expected to announce that the tax receipts will be about $250 billion above last year’s levels and that the deficit will be about $100 billion less than what they projected six months ago.

    …

“The main reason is a big spike in corporate tax receipts, which have nearly tripled since 2003, as well as what appears to be a big rise in individual taxes on stock-market profits and executive bonuses.”

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.c.....omy09.html

But Republicans deserve little or no credit for this, because they want to eliminate corporate income taxes and slash tax rates for upper-income individual taxpayers; which would cause this revenue would disappear.

If Republicans had their way, revenue would plunge and deficits would soar, instead of the other way around.

Wow! No amount of mean-spirited rightwing spin can change the ugly facts that:

    – Ken Lay headed Dick Cheney’s secret energy task force.
    – That task force wrote the Bush administration’s energy policy.
    – That policy led to doubling or tripling of prices for all forms of energy including oil, natural gas, and electricity.
    – The task force was staffed with energy industry lobbyists and big shots.
    – The Bush administration went to great lengths to hide what went on in the task force meetings from the media and public.
    – The west coast energy crisis of 2000-2001 was caused in part by deregulation, and in part by market manipulation by Ken Lay’s Enron Corp. and other companies.
    – Republicans supported the electricity market deregulation that resulted in electricity customers in western states getting gouged.
    – Democrats opposed this deregulation.

Any way you slice it, consumers are FAR MORE LIKELY to get gouged or outright ripped off under a Republican administration than under a Democratic one.

pbj’s effort to portray Democrats as the anti-consumer party, and Republicans as the pro-consumer party, is beyond pathetic — it’s laughable!

This is priceless! DEMOCRAT Delaware Senator Joe Biden, who, it appears, is running for president, appeared on C-Span’s ‘Road to the White House’ program. This is where a camera follows around a potential candidate while he grips and grins with supporters at one event or another. They’ve done it for years and it gives you an idea of what the lengthy process of becoming president is like.

Drudge posted the video, and it shows the good Senator speaking to a supporter…evidently a man of Indian origin. Indian, as in…from India. Biden is shaking hands with the man, who tells him that there is more support to come from the Indian community. Then, the Senator actually said this:

“In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian Americans, moving from India. You cannot go to a 7/11 or a Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.”

    Oh yeah … that worked.

There’s always a problem when those darned cameras follow you around, isn’t it? Now, let’s see how much you read about this in the mainstream media. Except for Drudge, it isn’t getting much play. This is because Biden is a Democrat and because the media favors Democrats, they’ll let this one slide. Sort of like the time The West Virginia Grand Wizard DEMOCRAT used the N word on national television. A complete pass from the press. Imagine if Bill Frist or George W. Bush had made these comments. The firestorm would just be getting underway.

By the way, the Indian community was none too pleased with Biden’s comments. The chairman of the Indian American Republican Council, himself a surgeon, responded with this statement: “It’s amazing to know we don’t all work at Dunkin Donuts or the local 7/11. The contributions to America by Indian Americans in the fields of medicine, education, science, and business have been well-documented.”

Let’s see if DEMOCRAT Biden is made to attend sensitivity training. I doubt it. But he won’t show his face around his neighborhood 7/11 anytime soon.

    Left Turn,

How meanspirited of you. Is TIME magazine a right wing outlet?

    Enron’s Democrat Pals

Documents obtained by TIME show the energy giant enjoyed much closer ties with Clinton Administration regulators than was generally known.

Before its messy decline and fall, Enron had plenty of clout in George W. Bush’s Washington, from the personal ties between chairman Ken Lay and the President to the company’s alleged influence on Vice President Dick Cheney’s energy task force. But Enron’s cozy relationship with Washington didn’t start there. Documents obtained by TIME show the energy giant enjoyed much closer ties with Clinton Administration regulators than was generally known. Long before Cheney’s task force met with Enron officials and included their ideas in Bush’s energy plan, Clinton’s energy team was doing much the same thing. Drafting a 1995 plan to help facilitate cash flow and credit for energy producers, it asked for Enron’s input—and listened. The staff was directed to “rework the proposal to take into account the specific comments and suggestions you made,” Clinton Deputy Energy Secretary Bill White wrote an Enron official.

Clinton officials also made efforts to help Enron get business overseas. Clinton Energy Secretary Hazel O’Leary included Enron officials on trade missions to India, China, Pakistan and South Africa. White, returning from a 1994 trip to Mexico, wrote chairman Lay that “much opportunity” existed there for natural gas, and he sent a copy of Mexico’s energy plans. To persuade an Enron senior vice president to join a mission to Pakistan, White wrote, “I have strong personal relationships with the existing government.”

Enron showed its gratitude. At Christmas 1995, documents show, it donated an unknown sum of cash in O’Leary’s name to a charity called “I Have a Dream.” And when Clinton ran for re-election a year later,[b] the company made its largest single contribution ever—$100,000—to the President’s party. On various matters, they helped set the stage for the scandalous behavior of Enron and other highfliers now in disgrace. They defended the degraded accounting standards that hoodwinked investors. Or they promoted financial gimmicks and deregulatory measures that opened the way for grand malpractice. Or they formed thick alliances with the very banks, auditing firms and corporations that are now running for cover–sued, investigated or defrocked as New Economy marvels.

Enron Democrats are compromised by their own past behavior, which explains why the Democratic Party’s reaction to this spectacle is so muted. Much as in the S&L scandals of the late 1980s, an unspoken truce may emerge between the two parties–don’t throw mud at me or I’ll throw some back–since so many leading Democrats are implicated along with the Republicans. The hallmark of “Enron issues” is the ease with which Democrats desert the interests of their party’s core constituencies to serve the political needs of business and banking. Some doubtless do so as a matter of conviction; some doubtless are convinced by the money.

During the 2000 election, other New Dems organized a direct assault on SEC chairman Arthur Levitt, who was challenging the big five auditing firms on their conflicted interests–consulting with companies on business strategy, then auditing the books with supposed independence. Dozens of politicians piled on Democrats Torricelli, Schumer and Bayh in the Senate; and Jim Moran, Cal Dooley, Ellen Tauscher and other New Dem regulars in the House. The New Democrat Network harvested more than $1 million that year for deserving politicians. Some have now recanted. “We were wrong, you were right,” Torricelli told Levitt, though he neglected to mention the money. The luster of Silicon Valley fundraising has not been dimmed by the scandals and bankruptcies. The “economic stimulus” bill passed in March was described as a Democratic victory because it includes a minor dollop for the unemployed. But most of the $43 billion went to business–including a gorgeous tax bonus sought by the needy entrepreneurs of Silicon Valley.

    Enron Shifts Cash To Democrats
    Dan Ackman, Forbes.com, 12.27.01, 9:50 AM ET

EW YORK – In the weeks before filing bankruptcy, Enron continued its usual practice of giving massive contributions to political parties–but with a twist. Historically one of the largest contributors to Republican Party coffers, Enron contributed $100,000 to Democrats, according to an Associated Press report.

Enron (nyse: ENE – news – people) gave the money to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, an organization that aids Senate Democratic candidates. But Robert Bennett, a Washington attorney representing Enron, said the contributions were business as usual, and were not intended to influence impending congressional investigations into the company’s dramatic collapse.

Still in the Closet — Democrats Getting Layed

“Outing” Democrats is such child’s play. Surrounded by shards of the smashed cookie jar, Moore-ish-faced Democrats just keep pointing fingers…as they just keep chewing. It’s like Teddy Kennedy supporting the Anti Saloon League. But, since John Kerry believes that “The value of truth is one of the most central values in America”, let’s serve up some truth.

In a never ending Democratic mantra, Kerry (yet again) blasted the President for failing to aggressively pursue Kenneth Lay. As we all know from such unbiased media sources as the AP, “Lay clearly favored the GOP. He and his wife, Linda, donated $882,580 to federal candidates from 1989-2001…All but $86,470 went to Republicans.” But, the “truth” that average folk recognize and none of the power players will admit is…that when it comes to politics and money, it’s just one big ménage à trios.

And…FYI, all of the truthful facts you are about to be bored with come from http://www.tray.com. Or, as the New York Times calls it, “The Granddaddy of all independent campaign finance Web sites and perhaps the most comprehensive….” Their information is culled from the disclosure records of the Federal Election Commission (FEC). If you don’t believe these numbers, just get a bottle of vodka and wait for the next passing of the Hale-Bopp Comet.

While it is true that Kenneth Lay made a ton of political donations to the Republican Party…his cheating heart was also shared by the Democrats. During the 2000 election cycle, Lay donated $6000 to Democratic candidates. Included among these Dems is liberal Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Massachusetts Congressman Ed Markey (described on his Congressional website as “…the third most senior Democrat on the Full Energy Committee”).

As reported in CongressDaily by Brody Mullins, in 1993 Kenneth Lay recruited then city council member Sheila Jackson Lee to challenge incumbent Craig Washington in a Democratic primary where, “Enron and its employees pumped $24,000 into Jackson Lee’s campaign and helped raise nearly $600,000 –three times as much as Washington raised for his previous reelection.” Sheila Jackson Lee became the next Democratic Representative from Texas and benefited from generous Lay donations ever since. Simultaneously, the Enron PAC was donating to Craig Washington and to (with ruffles and flourishes)…Eddie Bernice Johnson! No wonder Johnson thinks we need the U.N. to monitor our elections.

One of Ken Lay’s favorite causes was the Enron Corp Political Action Committee. Mr. Lay just couldn’t stop writing checks to his company’s PAC. And this is a tale of two cities!

While Lay was personally donating the majority of his campaign dollars to Republican causes, the Enron PAC was picking up the slack on the other side of the aisle. In 1992, Enron donated $1000 to incumbent senator Tom Daschle and zero to any Republican challenger. Enron donated $1000 and $2000 respectively in 1994 and 2000 to West Virginia’s Robert Byrd and zero to any Republican challenger. And, in 2000, Enron donated $1000 to Teddy Kennedy and zero to any Republican challenger.

On a larger scale, the Enron PAC’s “Contributions to Party Committees” tell an even more interesting tale. In the 1992 election cycle, the Enron PAC donated 58% of its total to Democratic Party Committees. In the 1996 election cycle, the Enron PAC donated 60% of its total to Democratic Party Committees. In the 2000 election cycle (Gore v. Bush), the Enron PAC donated 56% of its total to Democratic Party Committees. Even a liberal from the Associated Press can figure out that the majority of Enron PAC “Contributions to Party Committees” went to the Democrats…who gladly accepted the money.

This entire issue over Ken Lay, Enron and political donations is like the prep school finger pointing about self-gratification. Nobody does it, yet…everybody has dirty magazines under their beds.

Our campaign finance laws are as cleverly designed and as confusing as the Byzantine Catacombs. And don’t look to campaign finance reform laws for any comfort. They just take the dollars out of one viaduct and let them flow through another. Take “soft money” out of the equation and add political 527’s to the mix. The scam gets more confusing to the average citizen while the total dollars used to buy elections (and elected officials) keeps growing. As a Democratic senator once remarked to me, “It’s just another way to F___ the dog!”

On a Thursday, John Kerry says that the crew at his $25,000 per person record $7.5 million fundraiser is “the heart and soul of our country”. By Saturday, Kerry is vowing to restore “Truth” to Presidency. It kind of makes you wonder what the “truth” really is when it comes to Ken Lay, Enron and political donations.

The only “truth” the facts tell is that Lay, Enron, Democrats and Republicans willingly enjoyed one hell of a money orgy…while the party lasted. And don’t get hopeful. Just because the Enron mistress now has political herpes doesn’t mean that the politicians are practicing abstinence. They are just sleeping between different sheets.

The Democrats duck their boomerang. Congressional Democrats like to cry “corruption” and call for more regulation of political contributions that go mostly to Republicans. We aren’t likely to hear much about Enron’s contributions. After all, the Democrats got almost $1 million of the soft money that Enron gave to federal officials. Do congressional Democrats believe Enron’s money corrupted their judgment on policy? Judging by their spirited attacks, the Democrats are hardly going easy on Enron and its accountants. If a million in contributions didn’t corrupt Democrats, how can they argue, now and in the future, that campaign contributions corrupt the Republicans? With luck, congressional Democrats may avoid the easy demagoguery of “Big Money” attacks and work instead on a serious investigation of Enron’s demise

PAT ROBERTSON SENT TO NORTH KOREA FOR MADMAN-TO-MADMAN TALKS

Televangelist Selected From Shortlist of Bananaheads

The Reverend Pat Robertson left today for North Korea to engage in what
the State Department called a series of high-level “madman-to-madman”
talks with North Korean president Kim Jong-Il.

The United States, frustrated that six-party nuclear talks with North
Korea did not prevent President Kim from firing test missiles last week,
are cautiously optimistic that one-on-one talks between the two lunatics
    will help break the logjam.

“We needed to find someone who speaks Kim Jong-Il’s language,” Secretary
of State Condoleezza Rice told reporters today. “And by that I do not
    mean Korean — I mean crazy-talk.”

After the United States determined that madman-to-madman talks were
their best chance for success, the State Department compiled a shortlist
of bananaheads, including the Rev. Robertson, former presidential
candidate Ralph Nader, and former Partridge Family drummer Danny
    Bonaduce.

“That was a very, very competitive field, but we are confident that in
Pat Robertson we have found a whackjob on the same level as Kim
    Jong-Il,” Dr. Rice said.

Boarding a military aircraft for North Korea, the televangelist said
that he had many gifts to bring the North Korean president, including a
    lifetime supply of Pat Robertson’s Age-Defying Shake(TM).

The Rev. Robertson said that his initial goal would be to find “common
ground” with the mercurial Kim: “I’m going to start by talking about the
things that all reasonable people agree on, such as, God creates
hurricanes because he’s angry about gay marriage.”

Tell me again which political party gave Ken Lay a blank check to write the nation’s energy policy? – Roger Rabbit

Must have been Clinton. He was lobbying India to build an Enron boondoggle electric plant.

“Despite how the Clinton administration promoted Enron’s since-shut down electric power plant project in India, a plant which went online in 1999, in a 13-minute story on Sunday night’s 60 Minutes, CBS’s Bob Simon didn’t mention the name “Clinton” or the term “Clinton administration.” But, Simon linked the Bush administration to nefarious efforts in 2001 to get India to pay Enron what it owed the company.

Simon’s story described the non-competitive Enron bid of $60 billion over 20 years for the power plant as a bad deal for India and a good one for Enron since it would be fueled by liquified natural gas bought from an Enron subsidiary and promised that India would pay Enron every year even if they didn’t need the electricity. Simon derisively noted, “Deregulation: That was Enron’s favorite word.”

Simon recounted how in the mid-1990s a local politician, who promised to end construction of the plant, won election after claiming officials who approved the plant, which would produce more electricity than needed at a high price, were bribed. Simon then got to a Clinton administration action, but he didn’t mention Clinton: “The American Ambassador, Frank Wisner, pitched in. His role, as he saw it-”
Wisner [spelling a guess]: “Was to try to convince the central government to back a resumption of the project…”

Simon went on to note that in 1997, after India was convinced to re-start the building of the plant, Wisner took job with an Enron subsidiary.

In 1999 the plant finally went on line, Simon reported, and charged India four times the going rate for its power. In 2001, India stopped paying for the power it didn’t really need anyway, and the plant was shut down.

Simon then implied a Clinton role, but again failed to raise Clinton’s name as he specifically cited the role of Vice President Cheney: “[Ken] Lay had always found solid support from Washington and it was no different now. The Bush administration set up an Enron task force. Objective: Make those Indians pay their bill. Vice President Cheney did his part last June, as recorded in this task force e-mail. ‘Good news,’ it reads, ‘the Veep mentioned Enron in his meeting with Sonia Gandhi,’ the Indian opposition leader. But then, a few months later, Enron lay bankrupt and disgraced….”

Despite Enron’s collapse and September 11, Simon was appalled that just two months ago, U.S. Ambassador to India Robert Blackwell had the gall to lecture India about how the “sanctity of contract here may be in doubt” due to India not making payments to Enron.

The Clinton administration’s role in promoting Enron’s India power plant is hardly unknown. Back on the January 18 Special Report with Brit Hume, FNC’s Wendell Goler disclosed:
“Even though Enron head Ken Lay has been Mr. Bush’s most generous financial supporter, and nearly three dozen administration officials have held Enron stock, the Clinton administration appears to have provided a bigger bang for the much smaller bucks Enron executives have contributed to Democrats. The late Commerce Secretary Ron Brown and his successors, Mickey Cantor and William Daley, all reportedly hosted Enron executives on trade junkets that led to projects in half a dozen countries, including the Indian power plant, and several billion dollars in government loans and risk insurance.”

On February 25, Lisa Myers reported on the NBC Nightly News: “Documents obtained by NBC News show the Clinton administration billed three Enron projects in India and Turkey as success stories, personally pushed by the late Commerce Secretary Ron Brown. About that time, Enron made its first $100,000 contribution to the Democrats.”

State medical boards (including ours) are notoriously lenient. Maybe that’s because the states let doctors run these boards. And maybe they go easy on their fellow doctors because they’re thinking, “There, but for the grace of God, I might go someday.”

Case in point: An Arkansas doctor killed 10 patients by overprescribing narcotics. So what did they do? The board lifted his license. No, not his medical license, just his license to prescribe narcotics. He’s still a practicing doctor.

    India: Clinton’s Corporate Entourage

by Amit Srivastava, Special to CorpWatch
    March 20th, 2000

SAN FRANCISCO — Violence in Kashmir and nuclear proliferation are dominating the mainstream headlines on President Clinton’s trip to South Asia. And while security issues are clearly on the agenda in Clinton’s meetings with Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, the press is ignoring an equally significant part of the trip: trade. Traveling along with the Clinton family and US officials is a large corporate contingent. Behind the scenes of the first official state visit to India by a US president in 22 years, more than 50 US corporate executives are meeting with Indian officials and business representatives. The goal of these CEO’s and other executives is to gain more access to Indian markets.

The Washington, D.C. based US-India Business Council (USIBC) is hosting many of the events for the corporate delegates in India. The USIBC’s Board of Directors includes Frank Wisner, former Ambassador to India, currently representing the American International Group Inc. (AIG), one of the largest insurance companies in the US. Also on the Council’s board is Joseph W. Sutton of Enron, a Houston-based natural gas giant whose power projects in India have come under attack from environmental and community groups. Others on the board include Peter Howell of banking conglomerate Citigroup, Dinesh Keskar of Boeing India, Boyd Montgomery of UNOCAL and Charles Saris of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, to name a few.

The large corporate delegation accompanying Clinton includes former ambassador to India Frank Wisner, Lou Gestner, IBM’s Chairman, Arun Netraveli, President of Bell Laboratories/Lucent Technologies, John Smith, CEO of General Motors, Kenneth Lay, Chairman and CEO of Enron and General Electric’s CEO, John Welch.

Many US corporations have increasingly come under fire from Indian activists, whose concerns range from human rights to the environment. Last year, Enron, the single largest foreign investor in India, was implicated in human rights violations in India by a Human Rights Watch report.

    Mummified, that’s 1999. Clinton Era!

Oh those tolerant, kind, loving and gentle liberals…

    Crossing a Line

“I enjoy writing things that inflame, mock and infuriate the right,” Deborah Frisch said in an e-mail interview Sunday in response to a question about her online activities. By any measure, she’s achieving her goals — and she’s also out of a job.

Frisch posted a comment last week on Protein Wisdom, a Web site known for its no holding back conservative commentary, frequently with considerable mocking of liberal academics and ideas. Frisch, an adjunct lecturer at the University of Arizona until this weekend, said in the posting that she would not be sad if the 2-year old child of the site’s founder, Jeff Goldstein, was “Jon Benet Ramseyed,” and she reportedly posted other questions of the sort a Ramsey-inspired attacker might ask. (Goldstein lives in Colorado, where Ramsey was killed.)

Although Frisch apologized for the remark, which she called “nasty,” numerous conservative Web sites over the weekend traded stories about Frisch, saying that she had physically threatened Goldstein and his child (she denies this and says that however inappropriate her comments were, they weren’t threatening); that Frisch is Churchillian, as in Ward, not Winston (she agrees on some counts and has defended the notorious “little Eichmanns” remark); and that Frisch organized an online attack on Protein Wisdom (she denies this). They called on Arizona administrators to fire her (e-mail addresses were provided).

Who’s defending the country? Certainly not you. Hey, I’ll let you in on a little secret — although Republicans repeat their spin, lies, and propaganda so much they believe their own crap, everybody else sees through you guys. The whole country knows who the combat veterans are — and who savages them. The whole country knows Rumsfeld tried to eliminate combat pay for the troops in Iraq. The whole country knows the Bush administration was too cheap to pay for body armor and Humvee armor. The whole country knows Cher is out fundraising to buy safer helmets for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan — because the Bush/Rumsfeld Pentagon won’t order them. The whole country knows Bush used his congressman dad’s pull to get a National Guard slot to avoid Vietnam, then went AWOL from the Guard. The whole country knows Dick Cheney got five deferments and never served. The whole country knows Congress is chock-a-block full of Republican representatives and senators who avoided military service during Vietnam and never served.

Don’t talk to me about yellow, I served with a front-line combat unit in Vietnam, so fuck you, chickenhawk. Buhk-cluck-cluck buhk-cluck-cluck

I know this concept is difficult for you to comprehend, but none of the allegations against corperations that participated in a trade mission to India, nor even Enron’s contribution of $100,000 to the DNC offsets the cozy relationship to Enron that the Bush administration had at the time the degree of Enron’s corrupt and corrupting influences were being revealed.ifically:

Dick Cheney met six times with Enron executives while writing up an energy policy which benefited Enron

Cheney met with Ken Lay during the California energy crisis, after which Cheney said the Bush administration would not support price caps on energy in California, costing California rate payers and enriching Enron.

That said, if you decide to call for publically funded campaigns to remove some of the corrosive affects of big money contributors in national politics. You’ll receive nothing but praise from me.

In addition, I think the worst blind spot Bill Clinton had and has is his pollyannaish belief in free trade and world markets to solve humanity’s problems. If any of you righties are prepared to rollback NAFTA and CAFTA, and find a way to U.S. based local production of goods that will reduce the overall consumption of fossil fuels, you wiil be praised by me.

    I won’t hold my breath.

To recap: Enron is the first of many scandals that has Bush and Cheney’s fingerprints all over them. Attempting to blame Clinton for it and the others is just the same old right wing noise machine tactic that’s been going on since 1992.

DEFECTIONS TO DEMOCRATS WEAKEN GOP GRIP ON HEARTLAND

In 2004, Thomas Frank wrote an enthralling book called “What’s the Matter With Kansas?” that attempted to analyze the rightwing firestorm sweeping across America’s heartland.

(Readers of the book quickly realized that Kansas is a not a beet-red Republican state, but is politically complicated, and has always been so; and we are reminded that Kansas was at the epicenter of the violent turmoil leading up to the outbreak of the Civil War.)

If you’re interested in buying this book, go here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....56?ie=UTF8

It’s true that Kansas was firmly in the “red” column (anybody else notice the irony of calling Republican states “red states”) in the 2000 and 2004 elections. But in Kansas, as in the military, there are growing signs that the GOP’s unrelenting incompetence, corruption, and bullshit are finally driving rational people away from the party. This is most immediately manifesting itself by moderate Republicans switching parties, which is likely to become a growing trend across the country, as a result of more cerebral Republicans realizing (a) their party has been hijacked by totalitarian-minded radicals, and (b) for self-preservation, as moderate Republican politicians realize their party is heading for electoral disasters of Biblical proportions.

“Democrats dare to dream of recapturing the Bush heartland

“From Kansas to South Carolina, Republican moderates are turning their backs on the neocons and defecting to the enemy

    “Paul Harris in Topeka, Kansas
    “Sunday June 25, 2006
    “The Observer

“The squat, bunker-like building in a south Topeka suburb does not look like a place to turn American politics on its head. Nor does Mark Parkinson, a tall, affable man, look too much like a revolutionary. But here, deep in the American heartland, are the warning signs of a political earthquake.

“The two-storey office block is Parkinson’s campaign headquarters as he runs as Democrat candidate for deputy governor. So far, so normal. Except that only a few weeks ago Parkinson was a Republican. In fact, he was Kansas Republican party chairman.

“His defection to the Democrats sent shockwaves through a state deeply associated with the national Republican cause and the evangelical conservatives at its base. …

“Republicans in Kansas, he says, have let down their own people. ‘They were fixated on ideological issues that really don’t matter to people’s everyday lives. What matters is improving schools and creating jobs,’ he said. ‘I got tired of the theological debate over whether Charles Darwin was right.’

“This is music to Democratic ears and has profound potential implications for November’s mid-term elections. Kansas has been an iconic state for the Republican right, a symbol for issues such as teaching creationism in schools and fighting abortion rights. …

“But in a swath of heartland states such as Kansas, Democrats are seeing the first signs of their party’s rebirth. Parkinson is not alone in switching sides. In Virginia, Jim Webb, a one-time Reagan official, is seeking to be a Democrat senator. In South Carolina, top Republican prosecutor Barney Giese has defected … in Kansas another top Republican, Paul Morrison, also joined the Democrats and is challenging a Republican to be the state attorney-general.

“Democrats are hoping … the powerful conservative movement born in states such as Kansas will also die there. An upbeat mood prevails at the monthly meeting of the Shawnee County Democratic party. … ‘I know a lot of registered Republicans who no longer agree with what’s going on,’ said Charlie Snow, a real estate manager. … ‘We have always been the underdog, but recently actions of the President and the Republicans have made it a lot easier to be a Democrat in Kansas,’ Snow said.

“One of the key reasons Kansas Democrats are in fighting mood is their governor, Kathleen Sibelius. Sibelius’s vote represents an island of Democratic blue in a sea of Republican red on the political map, and she has impressed by reaching the middle-ground voters in a startlingly successful first term. Shunning the hot-button social issues, she has focused on education, jobs and health. This has earned her approval ratings touching 68 per cent in a state that was overwhelmingly pro-Bush in 2004.

“Sibelius has cracked the political holy grail: persuading heartland Republicans to vote Democrat. ‘Her style works here, and then bringing over Parkinson to the Democrats has been the coup of all coups,’ said Professor Bob Beatty, a political scientist at Washburn University near Topeka.

“As the Democrats enjoy a resurgence, the Republicans are in disarray. Parkinson’s defection encouraged other moderates to abandon a party controlled by right-wing religious zealots. … ‘A number of conservatives are actually pleased that the moderates are leaving the Republican party. That really could spell trouble,’ Beatty said.

    …

“The defections across the country have been spurred mostly by a reaction to the extremism of the right. The future, as Kansas predicts it, lies in the middle ground for the first party to stake a claim to it. ‘That is the absolute lesson. No party is going to win an election by being on the edges. The first to go to the middle ground will win,’ Gates said.”

I don’t know whjat to think about this. But, I definately don’t like any of it.

Myself, I haven’t slept in two days because of this. I’m just so heartsick. Poor, poor Mrs. Dickwhipped.

Sarcasm doesn’t translate well in pixels, does it?
Okay I’m not going to win brownie points here, but you guys are missing the point entirely —

this person (if you can call her that) threatened a child!!! please keep that in mind. anything Jeff has done was directed at an adult. big difference.

and there are many on the left (which I’m now ashamed to call myself one of) that are defending her actions.

her comments had to do with HARMING a child. A CHILD!! is that not clear to anyone here??? politics aside, she went way overboard, and should not be defended by anyone.

yeah, make light of the matter and then sit back and wonder how you would react if it was your child these hateful words were directed at. I don’t think you would be sitting comfortably in your chair without a care in the world.

Were my child so verbally attacked, if I had any real concern about the child’s safety, I would have beckoned gendarmes to the fore rather than grant Ms. Frisch the pleasure of a 38,000 visitor day, which a true sicko might take as a sign of encouragement.

Someone wishing harm on your child or insulting your mother yearns, mayhaps, for a fight, but the Yo-Mommas of the world have a rather weak record of followthrough from button-pushing to actual matricide.

Somebody give Mr. Goldstein some smelling salts so the poor dear can rise to the challenge and swing his mighty phallus at the Googol hordes till democracy is returned to the Euphrates and the Mespotamians are back in blue jeans and a 24 hour potable water supply.

Angie, Frisch’s comments were offensive, not threatening. Do you understand the difference? Anyway, who has excused her?

    More manufactured outrage from the right. You’d think Jeff would feel honoured by this brilliant piece from Chris Clarke;

to quote my marvelous child from his blogging history…

<1>Besides that, I’m curious. Why do you all hate the guy anyway? Name ONE THING that Bush has done that has compromised your rights as an American. Name ONE THING that he’s done that has materially altered your daily life. Name ONE Constitutional protection that you’ve lost under his Presidency. Yes, he’s a conservative – but he’s a pretty darn moderate one. If I were in
his shoes you can be damn sure you wouldn’t even HEAR the words “National Healthcare” let alone hear plans for it. And that’s just ONE example.

You know, it’s fine with me if you want to hate the guy out of ignorance or bigotry against Republicans. It’s fine with me if you want to hate him for sake of “sounding cool” and being on the mainstream bandwagon. I just wish that you guys would be friggin’ HONEST about it instead of buying into all the myths and rhetoric that haven’t an inkling of truth to them. I would
literally be beside myself if one of you actually had the integrity to just admit that your hatred of Bush hasn’t one actual substantive reason. AD 12-27-03

I went over to Jeff Goldstein’s blog and trudged through the comments since 7/4. A great deal of nonsensical tit-for-tat (on all sides,) and Frisch does prove that it is possible for a, reportedly, liberal commenter to be as much of a nutjob as the trolls we have here. I say reportedly liberal, because the interchanges are almost entirely personal snipes at each other.

Ms. Frisch appears to have a loose screw, and failed to realize that the imaginary people you are trading barbs with should not be allowed to cross over to reality. Nothing they say should raise one’s ire. As Alice said “you’re nothing but a deck of cards.”

But, threaten Goldstein’s kid? I don’t think so.

Also, the idea that Frisch represents liberals or that we should somehow apologize for her is stupid. It does point out to you righties, though, that attacking the blog owner is perilous. I’ve seen some comments directed Goldy’s way, also about his family, that were on the line.

It was a good publicity stunt for Jeff Goldstein, though. His site is still getting so many page hits that 500 errors are common.

And I notice you can’t meet his challenge so you fall back on your typical tactic of insults.

How many substantive differences would it take to establish that the American people’s problems with the president are with his policies first and foremost?

As Glenn Greenwald has ably described, the right accuses anyone who does not agree with the president’s polices of not only of being “liberal,” but also of “hating Bush,” without any evidence whatsoever.

    http://glenngreenwald.blogspot.....tical.html

    and

    http://glenngreenwald.blogspot.....tives.html

And FAIR recently explained just how hollow the “Bush hater” epithet really is:

    http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=2895

So, really, how many substantive differences will you need to see before you accept that my dislike for the president is entirely policy-based?

    A great American writes:

One of the most deceitful though commonly used tactics of Bush followers is to characterize positions which they dislike as something that is espoused only by the fringe Left, even though the position is held by people across the ideological spectrum. Thus, only the Far Left opposes the war in Iraq, even though scores of retired generals, life-long conservatives, and a majority of Americans have long been against it. And only the Far Left opposes the President’s warrantless eavesdropping on American citizens, even though some of the most eloquent and forceful opponents of warrantless eavesdropping are long-time conservatives who believe in the rule of law and a restrained federal government. And only the Far Left dislikes President Bush, even though his approval ratings are at near historic lows.

Hey librul nutcases: I see Maria CantVoteToWell bought off Mark Wilson per the Seattle PI article. So Maria needs to buy off her opponents in the primary.

Hey dingleberries who support Maria: How much did she pay to shut him up!

    http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/.....ell10.html

At a news conference at Cantwell’s Seattle campaign office, Wilson said that after “deep and personal one-on-one conversations with Senator Cantwell, I came away convinced we are on the same path when it comes to solving the crisis in Iraq and the potential crisis in Iran.”

Responding to a question from a reporter, Wilson said the amount of money the Cantwell campaign will be paying him to stump for her is “confidential,” but that he’s temporarily closing his business, which services the construction industry, to work on the campaign.

Cantwell spokeswoman Amanda Mahnke also declined to say how much the campaign will be paying Wilson, saying, “We don’t discuss our payroll.”

    Where is the investigation Dipshits?
