Rep. Charles H. Taylor, R-NC, who chairs an Appropriations subcommittee that oversees Interior Department spending, is blocking funds for construction of a memorial at the crash site of 9/11 Flight 93.
Taylor apparently opposes spending federal money to acquire land for memorials — so, presumably, he would also be against the Washington Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Korean War Memorial …

We ARE drilling in the Gulf, dummy! Where do you think virtually all new domestic production is coming from? Land-based U.S. oil production has been declining for decades, but the U.S. remains the world’s second largest oil producer, thanks to Gulf production.
Right wingers believe the earth is hollow and filled with oil. They think if environmentalists would allow oil companies to drill more holes, oil will last forever. They’re convinced the U.S. has limitless untapped oil reserves that are being “locked up” by a nationwide drilling ban.
1. Close the borders. Not next month. Now. Send the National Guard. Send American troops. What are they for if not to defend the borders of this country? Start stringing the barbed wire. Patrol with dogs. Do whatever needs to be done, but shut the border down. Let the rest of the world scream, but we have every right to defend our borders against invaders.
2. Immediately pass legislation providing for harsh penalties for any and all businesses and individuals who hire illegal aliens. No half-measures. Make it hurt. Last week immigration officials arrested over 1000 illegal aliens working for one company that makes pallets and shipping crates. The officers of that company should be headed to jail, and the company should be seized by the government and sold at auction with the proceeds being used to pay for securing our border. Put employers in jail — take their stuff. Let them know that this is serious and that hiring illegal aliens is tantamount to giving aid and comfort to the enemy. The hell with their campaign contributions. Fine them and jail them. Make ’em scream. As for getting these jobs done? Pay a wage that will attract Americans. It won’t hurt. The majority of people working in agriculture and construction in this country are citizens. They’ll do the work. Spreading pine straw may be a problem.
3. Heavily tax all wire and other transfers of money from illegal aliens to their homelands. If Mexico is getting $20 billion a year from illegal aliens in the U.S., seize about 30% of it. Call it a fine. That $7 billion could also be spent on border and immigration control.
4. Change the law so that any child born to a person in this country illegally does not automatically become an American citizen. That child will adopt the citizenship of its mother.
5. Put an end to providing all but emergency social services to illegal aliens. No food stamps, no welfare benefits, no access to taxpayer-funded government schools … no taxpayer-funded government services except for life saving medical care.
Enact those proposals, and what would we have? Those who have already illegally crossed the border will have one helluva time finding work in this country. No trabajo, no dinero. If they do find work they’ll have another problem sending the money they earned back home. So .. they’re here with no job, no prospect of finding a job, and no way to send their money back to Mexico without a heavy fine if they do happen to find work. Plus, they can’t tap into the great American welfare state. What is there left to do? Go home! That’s about it! And please notice that this is all accomplished without passing any laws making the illegals felons or threatening to deport them or put them in jail.
I heard of one other possible solution recently … one that is apparently being given some consideration in Washington. Simply pass a law about illegal immigration that matches, word-for-word, the law in Mexico. Being in Mexico illegally is a crime, yet Mexico screams when we try to criminalize illegal aliens in this country. If our law read exactly the same as does theirs, what are they going to say?

Hogwash! America can NEVER AGAIN produce enough oil to satisfy our consumption. That’s because we can produce only 40% of our needs. Any suggestion there are vast unexploited reservoirs of oil on American soil is pure bullshit! No land mass on earth has been more intensively developed and exploited for petroleum than the USA. We consume 25% of the world’s oil, but have only 3% of the world’s oil reserves.
Let’s take ANWR, for example. ANWR is one of the largest oilfields ever discovered on the North American continent, certainly one of the top 5. Optimistic estimates put ANWR reserves at 10 billion bbls, roughly double those of the East Texas Field, the largest single oilfield in the lower 48 states. Yet, ANWR’s oil would supply current U.S. consumption for only about 15 to 18 months.
The largest oilfield found in the U.S. portion of the Gulf of Mexico is Thunder Horse, a recent discovery which has not yet come on line. TH holds an estimated 1 billion bbls. All other U.S. oil strikes in the Gulf have been less than 1 billion bbl. The U.S. consumes a billion barrels of oil every 55 days. You would have to find seven Thunder Horses a year, for perpetuity, to make the U.S. oil-independent — but this math works only if there is ZERO GROWTH in U.S. oil consumption.
No one — absolutely NO ONE — in the oil industry itself thinks the U.S. can drill its way to oil independence. Oil industry execs will be the first to tell you the U.S. must import oil, because domestic reserves simply can’t meet U.S. needs. None of these execs are willing to say publicly there is a treasure trove of untapped oil locked up somewhere in the U.S. which — if freed of environmental restrictions or red tape — would solve U.S. energy problems. They know that’s simply not true.
The notion of U.S. oil independence is nothing but a rightwing pipedream or fantasy. The U.S. has the most mature oilfields in the world. Every square inch of U.S. soil has been explored. America’s onshore domestic oil production peaked in 1971 and has been declining since then. Except for ANWR, all of the significant U.S. discoveries since the 1970s have been in the Gulf of Mexico, where the shallow water oil was found years ago, and exploration is now moving into deeper waters, made possible by recent technological developments.
Deep-water drilling in the Gulf is expensive and — as we saw last fall — vulnerable to disruption by the hurricanes that regularly form over the Gulf’s warm waters. As the world’s temperature continues to rise, the frequency and ferocity of these storms will increase, causing even more disruption to Gulf production.
Why the Environment is Important
Because if it can’t support human life, we die.
Easter Island and the Anasazi Indian culture of the American Southwest are two well-known examples of societies believed to have suffered ecological collapse, followed by starvation and depopulation.

While the media continues to blame the big oil companies for gouging U.S. motorists as they collect record breaking profits, the windfall profits raked in by the government in the form of energy tax revenue actually dwarf the oil companies’ jackpot.
The press sounded the alarm last year when the largest U.S. oil company, ExxonMobil Corp, announced profits of $36 billion. But according to the Tax Foundation, the biggest price gouging profiteer was the U.S. government, cashing in to the tune of $54 billion in oil and gas taxes.
“Tax collections on the production and import of gasoline by state and federal governments are already near historic highs,” the think tank says. “In fact, in recent decades governments have collected far more revenue from gasoline taxes than the largest U.S. oil companies have collectively earned in domestic profits.”

God forbid those tax dollars go to pay for the highways, bridges and roads our cars NEED to drive around.
And with the federal government unable to keep up with demand for increased vehicle traffic, and crumbling infrastructure, it’s absolutely ridiculous to compare massive Big Oil price gouging with a government that can barely keep up with the demand for infrastructure improvements – especially now that tax cuts have helped decimate federal highway spending.

Kerry’s Tire-Slashers Sentenced

A congresswoman’s son and three Democratic campaign workers were sentenced Wednesday to four to six months in jail for slashing tires outside a Bush-Cheney campaign office on Election Day 2004.
The men pleaded no contest in January to misdemeanor property damage. A fifth worker was found not guilty.
“This case had to be a public example of what can happen when you interfere with voters’ rights,” said Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Michael Brennan, who rejected prosecutors’ recommendation of probation for the four men.
The state Republican Party had rented more than 100 vehicles to give rides to voters and poll monitors on Nov. 2, 2004. The cars were parked outside a GOP campaign office when the tires were punctured. The vandalism left the drivers scrambling for new vehicles.

Among those sentenced Wednesday were Sowande A. Omokunde, the son of U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wisconsin, and Michael Pratt, the son of former acting Milwaukee Mayor Marvin Pratt.
