Somebody pointed out that this may not be a big problem for Trump companies if they can simply obtain short term financing at the dictate of some oligarch or corruption crony in charge of a sovereign wealth fund. And it’s true, that would be the Trump company’s most likely escape valve.
But all that would do is offload the liability onto whoever provides that financing. I think it’s absolutely possible that the companies already lined up bailouts of this nature a long time ago, while Trump was still in office, still had a chance of re-election, could still trade on favorable U.S. treatment, and at a point in time when this kind of prosecution must have appeared remote and abstract. Remember that global finance is all about trust relationships. And taking on this kind of liability could be seen as untrustworthy behavior by lots of financial partners.
This would be entirely consistent with Trump’s record of taking down all of his partners, backers, vendors, and supporters with him when he inevitably fails. And he has always failed.
