A couple of people recently asked me if I knew anything about rumors that 48th LD Democratic Rep. Ross Hunter was sick. Well, I checked out his website this morning and found the answer:
As you may have heard I am undergoing chemotherapy for a slow-growing lymphoma we found last year. I am feeling fine, and will finish treatment in June. The new hairstyle is amusing, but I’m looking forward to having my hair back by August.
Well, chemo’s a bitch, and I’m sure the treatment is tougher than he makes it sound… but I’m told he expects a full recovery, and has absolutely no plans to interrupt his legislative career.

I wish Ross all the best. I know him from many years back and while not always agreeing with his point of view, he’s a reasonable person. He has slowed down though over the years.

Ross was in good spirits, jocular and deflected concern for his condition, which he painted in a “it’s not a big deal – I’ll be fine” manner.
It takes a lot more than this mild form of cancer to slow Ross down. He is just as peppy this year as he was when fighting 2 opponents for reelection in 2004. And do note he shaved his head beforehand, this mug shot is due to that, not 100% to the chemo. Not to worry!
Judge for yourself: he and Rodney Tom will be speaking at the KC Dems convention Saturday, right after Ron Sims near the top of the program.

For the record…I’m a cancer survivor myself, and I hold a special empathy for anyone who’s thusly afflicted, regardless of politics, ideology or anyone else. I even said a prayer and shed a tear or two for Lee Atwater…even though what he did in the political arena was despicable, nobody deserves to go through what he did. Besides, he was a helluva guitarist. (Unlike Bushie-boy, who probably had to be shown which end was which of the one he used as a prop for a photo op while New Orleans was flooding.)
Oh, yeah…regarding medical research, and innovation, and all that. I worked in that field myself, half a lifetime ago. At that time a great deal of that was done in universities, with Uncle Sam largely picking up the tab. What we learned was made available to the entire medical community, to benefit the most people, rather than being locked up and piddled out for the greatet profit. Somehow, it sure seemed to work better that way.

Thanks for the support, I think… I really am fine. Chemo is a drag, but the side effects aren’t as aggravating as I would have expected. I don’t seem to have any diminution of personal energy, or at least not so people would notice.
