18 As reported in this morning’s Pea-Eye, Bush waltzed into one of the wards for a photo op with a soldier and his cute kid, while his handlers vociferously denied that it was a photo op. Then he blew some smoke about what wonderful care is typically administered at Walter Reed, and that the only problem is due to “government bureaucracy”. Apparently he hadn’t been clued in (or had forgotten) that much of he management of patient care has already been farmed out to a private contractor.
At least whatever patients are housed in the area Bush visited got the benefit of a thoroughgoing cleaning of the area–unless, of course, they were made to do it themselves.

Senator Feinstein, realizing that there is an apparent conflict of interest with her chairing a committee that could have financial implications to her husband’s company, chose to voluntarily give up the chair. While as a minority member, she didn’t have the power to seriously influence actual spending, as the chairman she does, and she decided that it would be for the best for her to turn the chair over to another.
Ooooh. Sounds sinister to me. Certainly no Republican would ever do such a thing.
And while NATO still had some peacekeeping troops in Bosnia until recently, I have a difficult time equating the roughly 700 (yes, seven hundred) troops there with the over 150,000 troops in Iraq, and if you don’t think that protecting civilians from genocide is an appropriate use of even a small portion of our military, then yet another of the reasons you folks keep supporting the war in Iraq vanishes as well. Liberals aren’t so much complaining about the use of troops to protect civilians as we are complaining that, unlike in Bosnia, in Iraq it isn’t working.
Mr. Reid’s real estate transactions have been examined with a level of scrutiny that would normally require a microscope, but so far, everything appears legal.
Mr. Jefferson is hardly a respected Democratic leader, and we welcome further investigations. If he broke the law, he should go to jail. By the way, why isn’t the Republican-controlled Justice Department concluding its investigation? I’m almost beginning to believe that they don’t have a case, but are enjoying dragging this out in the press.
Ms. Clinton. “Too many crimes to list“? What, does she have some unpaid parking tickets? Everything else has been investigated out to a gnat’s whisker, and nothing came of it. Who is it that is running the Justice Department? Last I checked, it was still Republicans.

Bush started a war against Iraq on the grounds that Saddam wasn’t complying with UN resolutions when, in fact, Saddam was allowing UN inspectors into Iraq. In fact, the UN inspectors had to haul ass out of Iraq to escape being blown up by American bombs. After 3,200 U.S. dead and over 600,000 American dead, Bush is losing his war.
Clinton intervened against the Serbs on the grounds they were violating UN resolutions after the Serbs had started four wars, murdered tens of thousands of unarmed civilians, and were, in fact, violating UN resolutions. Clinton won his war without loss of a single American life in combat, possibly saving a million or more innocent lives.

Not really. If you’re very poor — say, an 80-year-old widow living on a $700 social security check, then yes, you get a property tax exemption. But the income threshold is too low to benefit struggling middle class retirees.

Senator exits MILCON following Metro exposé, vet-care scandal

SEN. Dianne Feinstein has resigned from the Military Construction Appropriations subcommittee. As previously and extensively reviewed in these pages, Feinstein was chairperson and ranking member of MILCON for six years, during which time she had a conflict of interest due to her husband Richard C. Blum’s ownership of two major defense contractors, who were awarded billions of dollars for military construction projects approved by Feinstein.
As MILCON leader, Feinstein relished the details of military construction, even micromanaging one project at the level of its sewer design. She regularly took junkets to military bases around the world to inspect construction projects, some of which were contracted to her husband’s companies, Perini Corp. and URS Corp.
Perhaps she resigned from MILCON because she could not take the heat generated by Metro’s expose of her ethics (which was partially funded by the Investigative Fund of the Nation Institute). Or was her work on the subcommittee finished because Blum divested ownership of his military construction and advanced weapons manufacturing firms in late 2005?
The MILCON subcommittee is not only in charge of supervising military construction, it also oversees “quality of life” issues for veterans, which includes building housing for military families and operating hospitals and clinics for wounded soldiers. Perhaps Feinstein is trying to disassociate herself from MILCON’s incredible failure to provide decent medical care for wounded soldiers.
Two years ago, before the Washington Post became belatedly involved, the online magazine Salon.com exposed the horrors of deficient medical care for Iraq war veterans. While leading MILCON, Feinstein had ample warning of the medical-care meltdown. But she was not proactive on veteran’s affairs.
Feinstein abandoned MILCON as her ethical problems were surfacing in the media, and as it was becoming clear that her subcommittee left grievously wounded veterans to rot while her family was profiting from the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. It turns out that Blum also holds large investments in companies that were selling medical equipment and supplies and real estate leases—often without the benefit of competitive bidding—to the Department of Veterans Affairs, even as the system of medical care for veterans collapsed on his wife’s watch.
