There was a hearing in Olympia yesterday on state Sen. Eric Oemig’s impeachment resolution, and the hearing room was packed with citizens seeking to testify in favor. One attendee has a firsthand account posted over on Daily Kos:

Today I was privileged to be one of about 200 citizens who went to our state Capitol to ask our legislators to defend the US Constitution by directing Congress to investigate whether sufficient grounds exist for the impeachment of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. The atmosphere was boisterous and enthusiastic, but respectful. We were there to testify at a Senate committee meeting and we comported ourselves accordingly. Unfortunately, a Republican member of the committee was not able to do likewise.

It should come as no surprise that the Republican member in question was none other than state Sen. Pam Roach, Auburn’s own gun-toting, do-nothing whackjob, who’s considered a bit of an embarrassment even by some of the craziest elements of her own caucus. (Seriously Pam… when even your fellow Republicans share eye-rolling stories with liberal bloggers like me, you might want to start reeling it in.)

TVW has the video, and you can view Sen. Roach’s outburst here, starting at about 28:10, when she sternly warns the crowd:

“I’m going to be filing an ethics complaint, because I believe that the topic of this hearing in an election year with this content, especially because this issue has been aired in the year 2007, is specifically using state property, state facilities for campaign purposes.”

To which the audience laughs in derision. The committee chair, Sen. Darlene Fairley, attempts to restore order, but Sen. Roach wasn’t finished. As the next panel is assembling, Sen. Roach interrupts again, pulling out a photo of her son, Air Force Capt. John Adams Roach (not to be confused with Stephen, her gun-toting, drug-dealing son,) and angrily chastises the audience: “What you are doing is a disgrace!”

As Sen. Roach stands up waving the photo and yelling at the audience in mock anger, the crowd erupts, despite Sen. Fairley’s calm explanation that “She’s doing this for TVW, so let’s just let her do it.”

So what exactly did the panelists say that so offended Sen. Roach? Well, it’s interesting to note that while she starts her grandstanding at 28:10, the senator didn’t actually arrive in the hearing room until after 24:50, sometime during the three minute statement of Linda Boyd of Washington For Impeachment. So if Sen. Roach was genuinely responding to any of the comments made during the hearing, it would have been those of Boyd.

I’ve transcribed part of Boyd’s testimony below, but I urge you to view the TVW video to judge her “disgraceful” comments for yourself, especially those moments where Boyd’s voice cracks with emotion in describing her reverence for the Constitution and the rule of law.

“Without our Constitution we have nothing, and it threatens to make our entire government illegitimate, and I do not say this lightly — I cannot believe that these words are coming out of my mouth, that our government is illegitimate, and does not answer to the people.

Impeachment was promised to us by the founders as a way to restore integrity and to restore the power of the people in their government. Articles of impeachment introduced by Dennis Kucinich, have been waiting in the Judiciary Committee in the House, but the bill is stuck in committee. We have turned to you to magnify our voices, to bring Congress to do their job. This is a traditional role of the state Legislature; Jefferson’s Rules 602 through 604 guaranteed the right of legislatures to call on Congress to do their job.

We have a beautiful vision in this country — impeachment is not a mere act of castigation, it is to preserve the beauty of our document of our initiation of the ideas that connect the people of this country. The price of not impeaching is very high. The eyes of the world are upon us; let them know that the senators of Washington State understand that politics here is not just a game of winning the next election, politics are the lives of the people.”

It is to this fervent plea that Sen. Roach responds with nothing less than naked political grandstanding. She doesn’t even display the courtesy of sticking around for Sen. Oemig’s closing statement: at 34:40, less than ten minutes after arriving, Sen. Roach gets up and leaves, remaining absent for the hearings on the following bills as well. (Watch the video; Roach’s seat is empty for almost the entire hearing.) That’s the kind of thoughtful, dedicated public service we’ve all come to expect from Sen. Roach.

Sen. Roach threatens to file an ethics complaint charging that hearing the impeachment bill — giving the citizens of our state the opportunity to give public testimony for or against — is somehow an abuse of state facilities for campaign purposes… and I sure hope she does. For the only person I saw campaigning in that hearing room yesterday was Sen. Roach, and if she files her ethics complaint I intend to file mine, charging her with abusing the ethics complaint process for political purposes.

Yaaaawwwwnnnnn!!

Been away for a while. Same people complaining about the same thing and not getting much done.

Bottom line on this topic; Nancy Pelosi is the one who needs to be removed from office. NOW!!

Hate to say it but SHE alone is the problem when we’re talking about preserving the rule of law. The sooner that ineffectual leader is out of the Speaker’s chair and replaced with someone who understands the Constitution the better for America.

Do not be mistaken, the rule of law is NOT dependent upon people following the rule of law, i.e. Bush and most Republicans of course there will always be law breakers. The rule of law is preserved ONLY when it is blindly enforced.

Nancy Pelosi is THE only person on planet Earth who can allow articles of Impeachment to come to the floor in the House of Representatives for debate and vote. She has failed, and failed miserably, in her sworn oath o uphold an defend the Constitution.

Pam Roach, and any and all supporters of Bush and his cronies are simply unpatriotic. The rule of law crowd from the 90′s have turned out to be just as culpable as Bush in his disregard for law, tradition, and true American values.

I’ll check in later to see if anything changes in a few months. Doubt it.

I can’t wait for the REAL sea change in politics occur this fall. Get ready for the first black or woman president in our history and get ready for a filibuster proof, Democratic majority in the Senate.

The shoe is about to drop on the other foot of blind loyalty to the president, this time, however, the shoe will be on the left foot.

The Bush gang deserve to be tried in a Nuremberg-style court for crimes against humanity. The fact that they’ve only slaughtered about one-twentieth the number of people as the Third Reich is more a testament to their incompetence than to their lack of trying.

This is so typical of Pam Roach. Still, my personal favorite is her shrieking “Who moved my flowers?” floor speech a couple years back.

7. horsesasshole spews:

Roach is a first class clown. That said, I take issue with Goldy in suggesting the jeering response of the audience was in any way more elevated than her rant. Her initial statement wasn’t that crazy in either tone or content and it seemed that the jeers pissed her off (no great feat to be sure). I’m not sure the old guy saying we are one step from the Third Reich is any crazier than the genuinely unhinged Senator Pam.

Welcome back but Pelosi said almost from the very beginning that impeachment was off the table. It didn’t seem to work very well for the Republicans when they tried it – Clinton’s approval rating only climbed. Where is Bush’s right now?

If Bush got any sympathy from a trial in the Senate then it would only drain the impact from pictures like this:

http://preview.tinyurl.com/ypfauz

It seems clear to me that Pelosi and the rest of the leadership’s political calculation was to let the Republicans be Republicans.

The Republicans have followed through beautifully – they’ve obstructed popular legislation in both the House and the Senate. Plenty of ammunition to use against them this fall.

Also Bush has had a working conservative majority in the House from the Bush Dog Democrats on many issues. I believe it is this group that has in effect vetoed action on the impeachment of either Bush or Cheney.

Why am I not surprised that a Republican thinks being asked to respect the Constitution is “disgraceful”? Why Should Anyone Work?

“FRESNO, Calif. — An appeals court overturned a $1.5 million verdict awarded to a woman who was spanked in front of co-workers in what her employer called a camaraderie-building exercise. …

“[The woman] quit … less than a year after she was hired …, saying she was humiliated during the company’s team-building exercises. Employees were paddled with rival companies’ yard signs as part of a contest that pitted sales teams against one another. The winners poked fun at the losers, throwing pies at them, feeding them baby food, making them wear diapers and swatting their buttocks.”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Ain’t capitalism grand? Thanks to trial lawyers, this company is now bankrupt. We need more trial lawyers. Personally, I wouldn’t put up with working conditions like this. In fact, I won’t put up with ANY working conditions? Why should I, when Congress taxes the shit out of earned income and gives unearned income a free ride? From now on, I’m going to live on inheritances, capital gains, and dividends! That way, I’ll pay no taxes and nobody can paddle my cute white cottontail.

25. Roger Rabbit spews:

That story shows how little workers are respected in our capitalist system. No one should work! Everyone should quit. Not go on strike — just quit. Why should anyone work under a system that treats workers in such degrading ways as this? Screw work! I haven’t worked for several years, and will never work again! I’m living off the land like Republicans do.

I watch with keen eye to distant dune horizons, to rising angry sand-clouds raised by millions of galloping hopes … hovering just beyond the almost damaged dreams of those who wait. I have been doing so for over 2 years.

What I witnessed in this gathering of patriots, in the Washington State Legislature, is the blossoming of all the work that I and thousands of other patriots have been working diligently on for these many months … the issue of Impeachment. I am convinced after observing the replay of this Senate discussion, that all our efforts are about to produce the honey of hard-earned effort, that sweet essence of pollinated delight.

The groundswell is enormous for Impeachment; but as enormous as it is, it is equally as clandestine from public view because of our complicit, quiescent media. I have a certain amount of disdain for the loud and uninformed citizenry who lack the depth, curiosity, and knowledge to even have an opinion on these matters. It is obvious they have not done their due diligence gathering the facts for themselves. Instead, they have allowed their keepers CNN, FOX, NBC and others to administer to them their daily dose of pabulum to keep them just this side of being hungry for the truth regarding this unjust war and this traitorous, self-serving, heinous administration.

When the American public ultimately finds out further about the conspiracy to withhold the truth from them in favor of corporate self-interests there is going to be an even greater cloud of dust, transforming vision into blind rage. Out-rage for the lies, the half-truths, the misinformation and the disinformation that our government and the 4th estate have levied upon it’s people. Therefore, I say to those who are so foolishly, blatantly indolent, complacent and incompetent to do their due diligence in securing the facts and remedies necessary to defend their constitution, who instead waste other’s precious newsprint time to spout moronic, distasteful scrabble; I say to them that they do not have a right to an opinion. That they are unconscionable blithering, bloviating air sacs who need to refresh their vacuous memories with what they should have learned in grade school instead of doodling on their desktops or rolling spit-balls … and now their eyes.

Yes, the massive gathering sand-storm of discontent and anger will soon indeed come crashing upon the plains of America, sandblasting the mountains of deceit with slicing silicate severity, coating mendacious mucous-membrane with crushing, masticating grit; showering, pounding the houses built on sand, decimating them. I pray they do so with such great force and might that those of this land who elected and still support this parody of righteousness, this travesty of democracy must beseech the victims. Must petition, on behalf of their government’s rape of ancient land, the tortured, the traumatized, the murdered, abandoned and homeless … must petition them for their countless tears. Their countless tears to wash clean this blighted land and to be cleansed of this hot, mutagenic dust.

We too are the victims. And I pray that so too the air will be cleansed so that we may all breath deep the breath of forgiveness, if it is granted, to once again feel clean in the cleansing of all those countless tears. This may not happen but a debt of gratitude to you Washington State for your honor to duty and high patriotism. And for a supplication of forgiveness, to you Iraq for this tragedy, from all of us, even from the compassionately challenged.

@9 I couldn’t disagree with you more, James. Yes, it’s a pyrrhic exercise — but principle demands it. Asserting the Constitution as the BINDING supreme law of the land is not a “distraction,” it’s the most important task at hand. Furthermore, an impeachment resolution by the House would force the GOP Senators to make a choice between their party or their country — and it’s time they did.
