You know all those nasty rumors that Sarah Palin’s new baby is actually her grandson? Well today, Palin issued an airtight rebuttal:
“The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.
Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin’s five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
So… um… yeah, I suppose 4-month-old Trig couldn’t be Bristol’s baby, if she was one month pregnant at the time he was born. That is, assuming Bristol really is five months pregnant, as the Palins now claim.
For his part, Barack Obama thinks that bloggers like me should lay off of Bristol Palin:
“Let me be a clear as possible: I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people’s families are off limits,” Obama said, “and people’s children are especially off limits.
“This shouldn’t be part of our politics,” he continued, “It has no relevance to Gov. Palin’s performance as governor, or her potential performance as a vice president.
“And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories,” he said. “You know my mother had me when she was 18, and how a family deals with issues and, you know, teenage children, that shouldn’t be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that’s off limits.”
Yeah, I suppose. But you know, really… the minute her holy roller mother accepted the Republican nomination for Vice President was the minute Bristol Palin’s 17-year-old, unmarried uterus ceased to be a wholly private matter. I don’t doubt that Bristol’s decision to keep her baby is the right one for her and her family (the shotgun wedding, well… not so much), but this whole incident just underscores the failure of the Republican Party’s faith-based approach to reproductive health.
As her mother, I suppose Sarah Palin had every right to attempt to deny her daughter access to birth control or even medically accurate sex education, but if we ever truly want to address our nation’s epidemic of teen pregnancy, we’re crazy to have folks like Sarah Palin controlling our public policy.
(Oh, and by the way, this bullshit meme about the rumor being started by “liberal bloggers” …? A Seattle-based consultant active in Alaska politics tells me that she’s heard this rumor “for months,” so it was well established within Alaska’s chattering class long before McCain tapped Palin as his running mate. So there.)

TRICK QUESTION OF THE DAY:
Let’s take a 17 year old girl, who is not married. The girl engages in sexual relations with a man six years older than she is, and becomes pregnant. The girl decides to keep the baby. When the girl is several months pregnant, the father finally agrees to marry her. The father moves away when the child is two years ago, and the parents get divorced.
Would you even consider voting for the child for an important, critical position as President or Vice-President of the United States? How about the child’s grandparents (i.e. the parents of the girl who got pregnant out of wedlock when she was 17)?

I think we should let the girl know that we’ll provide funds if she wants to have an abortion. Heck – I’ll pay for it if she needs it. Better to abort than to have an unwanted child that the “GOP” stops caring about the second it’s born.

Palin’s Immoral decsion
Of course we may never know whether Governor palance and her husband planned pregnancy. I, for one, hope it was not and that this little kid is a product of a mad moment of passion between the Plain Parents.
Palin, then a 43 you woman, knowingly had intercourse with her hubby, presumably sans protection. Was this passion? A moral objection to rubbers? The worst possibility is that this was planned, WITH the knowledge that she had a 5% chance of giving birth to severely disabled child.
She might as well have taken a gun, filled a clip with one blank and 19 loads, and pointed it at a child.
This is NOT simply about her belief in the right to life. That belief .. like any other belief in a right, ought to also bring with it a sense of responsibility. If you already have four children is it ethical to plan a fifth knowing the risk is this high?
Is this a role model for the Daisey Mays of this world or for the ideals Palin cliams to have?

Steve, not to be too pedantic, but your analogy is flawed – in a couple of respects.
First of all, with a 5% chance of a disabled child, then it should be 19 blanks, and 1 live round. Second, that doesn’t really work anyway, since there are no revolvers that hold that many rounds. Only an automatic uses magazines. With a revolver you could “play roulette”, but with an automatic there is no randomness factor, as the rounds feed in succession.

The Palin Meltdown in Slo-Mo
By Greg Sargent – September 1, 2008, 6:20PM
On the same day that the Republicans were forced to dramatically cut back their convention activities, the Palin Meltdown unfolded with extraordinary speed. It’s worth pondering the totality of what happened today, in a mere half day…
* The news that Palin once backed the Bridge to Nowhere went national.
* It emerged that Palin has links to the bizarro Alaska Independence Party, which harbors the goal of seceding from the union that McCain and Palin seek to lead.
* The news broke that as governor, Palin relied on an earmark system she now opposes. Taken along with the Bridge to Nowhere stuff, this threatens to undercut her reformist image, something that was key to her selection as McCain’s Veep candidate.
* The news broke that Palin’s 17-year-old daughter became pregnant out of wedlock at a time when the conservative base had finally started rallying behind McCain’s candidacy.
* Barely moments after McCain advisers put out word that McCain had known of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy, the Anchorage Daily News revealed that Palin’s own spokesperson hadn’t known about it only two days ago.
* A senior McCain adviser at the Republican convention was forced into the rather embarrassing position of arguing that McCain had known about the pregnancy “last week” — without saying what day last week he knew about it.
* It came out that Republican lawyers are up in Alaska vetting Palin — now, more than 72 hours after it was announced that she’d been picked.
* Palin lawyered up in relation to the trooper-gate probe in Alaska — a move that ensures far more serious attention to the story from the major news orgs.
What else will come out today? After all, there are still six hours left until September 2nd…

Palin Hires Lawyer for Trooper-Gate Investigation
By Kate Klonick – September 1, 2008, 5:20PM
MSNBC just reported that presumptive vice-presidential nominee and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has hired a lawyer in relation to the Trooper-Gate scandal.
Alaska State Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Hollis French told TPMmuckraker that Palin has hired Thomas Van Flein, an Anchorage attorney at the law firm of Clapp, Peterson, Van Flein, Tiemessen & Thorsness. French said that Van Flein has already been in contact with him, regarding the ongoing investigation of Palin.
Van Flein has represented the Alaska Dental Society and according to a cached version of his firm website, specializes in professional liability — including licensing issues, commercial litigation, appellate practice, and employment law.
From the AP:
Anchorage attorney Thomas V. Van Flein has requested a copy of all witness statements and documentary evidence from the Legislature’s investigator, Stephen Branchflower. Sen. Hollis French, an Anchorage Democrat, says he instructed Branchflower not to comply with the request.

Did McCain Know About Pregnancy Before Picking Palin?
By Greg Sargent – September 1, 2008, 3:29PM
Is it really possible that the McCain campaign is refusing to say whether McCain knew about Bristol’s pregnancy before picking Sarah Palin as his running mate?
Apparently so:
Reporters at the Republican national convention hammered McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt about the Palin pregnancy during a press conference. All Schmidt would say is Palin and McCain had discussed the pregnancy and considered it to be a private matter.
He wouldn’t say if they talked about it before McCain picked Palin as his vice presidential nominee.
Say what? So what did McCain know about this woman before putting her within reach of controlling the most powerful military in human history?
Amusingly, McCain adviser Schmidt is saying that McCain knew about the pregnancy “last week,” which also includes Saturday and all day Friday after the announcement, of course.
Late Update: MSNBC’s reporters on-scene with Schmidt add this:
Top McCain campaign official Steve Schmidt told a scrum of reporters in St. Paul that McCain was aware of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy “last week,” though he would not say specifically which day last week.
And the descent into self-parody and farce continues apace..

Sarah Palin And The Alaska Independence Party
By Greg Sargent – September 1, 2008, 11:12AM
This seems worth digging into a bit. The Alaska Independence Party, which was formed with the goal of seceding from the union and establishing Alaska as an independent state, says that Palin addressed their 2008 convention.
The AIP has posted video of what it claims is her address on its Web site.
It’s hard to gauge how fringe the group is. Its Website features this quote from one of its founders:
“The problem with you John Birchers’ is that you are too damn liberal!”
— Joseph Vogler, Founder Alaskan Independence Party
…and here’s AIP’s list of goals:
Until we as Alaskans receive our Ultimate Goal, the AIP will continue to strive to make Alaska a better place to live with less government interference in our everyday lives.
The Alaskan Independence Party’s goal is the vote we were entitled to in 1958, one choice from among the following four alternatives:
1) Remain a Territory.
2) Become a separate and Independent Nation.
3) Accept Commonwealth status.
4) Become a State.
The party says its not a fringe party anymore, but this “Ultimate Goal” stuff seems pretty kooky. And it is still describing this as a goal: “Become a separate and independent nation.”
TPM says spews:
ST.PAUL — In her nationally televised speech accepting the job as John McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said she “championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress” and opposed federal funding for a controversial bridge to a sparsely populated island.
“I told Congress, ‘Thanks, but no thanks,’ on that bridge to nowhere,” Palin said Friday in Ohio, using the critics’ dismissive name of the project. “‘If our state wanted a bridge,’ I said, ‘we’d build it ourselves.'”
While running for governor in 2006, though, Palin backed federal funding for the infamous bridge, which McCain helped make a symbol of pork barrel excess.
And as mayor of the small town of Wasilla from 1996 to 2002, Palin also hired a Washington lobbying firm that helped secure $8 million in congressionally directed spending projects, known as earmarks, according to public spending records compiled by the watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste and lobbying documents.
Wasilla’s lobbying firm was headed by Steven Silver — a former chief of staff to Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens, a key proponent of the bridge projec

Face It: They Didn’t Vet Her
09.01.08 — 7:24PM
By Josh Marshall
Earlier I noted Andrea Mitchell’s reference to reports that the McCain camp had just sent a team of GOP lawyers up to Alaska to do what I guess you’d call a post-vetting of Sarah Palin. Now George Stephanopoulos appears to have more. George says the McCainers are sending a “rapid response team of about ten operatives that includes lawyers” to do the aforementioned deeper vet. A lot of attention is being given to Gov. Palin’s daughter’s situation. The much bigger deal is the expanding trooper-gate investigation, the fact that Palin lied in her Friday speech about her purported opposition to the Bridge to Nowhere, her apparent former membership in the secessionist Alaska Independence Party, and more. Individually, you can come to your own judgment about how consequential these stories are. What they show pretty clearly now — in addition to the news that the McCain campaign is only now sending in a vetting team — is that John McCain didn’t do any serious vetting of Palin before he invited her to join his ticket and, he hopes, become Vice President of the United States.
Fundamentally, of course, this is about John McCain. And the real issue here is what this slapdash decision says about his judgment.
