Richard Roesler at Eye on Olympia reports that the husband of incoming state Rep. Shelly Short, R-Addy, pleaded guilty yesterday to third degree theft involving money stolen from a fair board.
Seems during the campaign Short and her husband had leveled all sorts of accusations against the Spokesman-Review, using terms like “political smear job” and the shoddy conservative standby “elitist.”
There’s far more to the tale of the Shorts, but it’ll be simpler if you just go read Roesler’s post.
Invoking the Ten Commandments is always a tell, huh? Harry Truman used to relay a saying he attributed to his grandfather that went something like, “If a man sings too loud on Saturday night and prays too loud on Sunday morning, best go home and lock up the smoke house.”
proud leftist spews:
Remarkable. Accusing the Spokesman-Review of being leftist is like accusing Karl Rove of being a Democrat. At one point, that paper was considered the most conservative in the whole freaking nation. It has improved a bit since then, but not much. This gal is now in Olympia. How proud you righties must feel. Lord, please spare us the idiocy of those from Stevens County.

Hey now, don’t be dissing all of us here in Stevens County. I was shocked when I saw that Shelly Short had won by so much. We only had two choices and they were both Republicans. Her opponent came to my door despite my obama signs out front. She said that Shelly passed by houses that sported demo signs. Shelly has close ties in the Colville area, the Stevens County seat. She is active in 4-H. Her opponent was an outsider and not conservative enough for this community.
Roger Rabbit spews:
“In October, the newspaper reported that court records showed she faced a $36,000 IRS lien, a state tax warrant for another $1,000, and a $12,000 judgment for delinquent credit-card debt. She was also nearly $2,500 behind on property taxes. A 2007 lawsuit by an employee over back wages also included a promissory note from Mitch Short acknowledging he owed the woman more than $9,000. On the campaign trail, meanwhile, Shelly Short was touting her fiscal conservatism. ‘I made this pledge because it is time to draw a line in the sand and say enough is enough. Frankly, the state should buckle down and handle its financial affairs in the same way our families do when times are tough,’ her campaign website told voters.”
Well, okay. Here’s a blueprint for how self-described fiscal conservatives would manage state finances if they got the chance:
1. Don’t pay your taxes;
2. Don’t pay your employees;
3. Don’t pay your debts;
4. Steal anything you can get your mitts on;
5. Do not pass “Go”; do not collect $200; go directly to Jail.
Roger Rabbit spews:
It proves any lying deadbeat can get elected to the Legislature, if he or she lives in eastern Washington, where the gullible and stupid voters are.

This quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson seems appropriate:
“The louder he talked of his honor, the faster we counted our spoons.”
WaltK spews:
Perhaps the 7th LD voters thought the Shorts best matched Bob Sump’s utter lack of qualifications.
I was surprised by Short’s margin in Spokane County, where the scandal was at least covered. The Spokesman-Review is indeed leftist when compared to the Colville Statesman-Examaniner, which did it’s best to ignore the issue.
In a world that gets its information from TV, there is precious little available for folks out here about their local world. So they live in an alternate reality where abortion, gay marriage, and guns are the real issues. We are making progress, but it’s precious slow.

So having a crook and liar in office is new?

Vague recollections of that famous GOP pleading: “I am not a crook.”

love the emerson quote messenger!
don’t forget, the spokeman review endorsed mccain.

It amazes me grown adults can fall for these right wing politicians who wrap themselves in the flag and the Bible to avoid scrutiny.
Look at the Tri Shitties re-electing Doc “we don’t have the resources to investigate Tom Delay” Hastings, with 63% of the vote.
William S Burroughs said it best (if not crudely):
“If you’re doing business with a religious son of a bitch, get it in writing. His word isn’t worth shit, not with the good Lord telling him how to fuck you on the deal.”
OlyRebel spews:
None of us will ever know all of the details to any of the incidents regarding the Shorts. It is best left for someone higher up to judge, not us. We don’t often look in the mirror.
Now, I do know the Spokesman does lean left on many articles it has written because I know some of the facts on certain articles. They chose not to write a fair article in those instances.
I also know that Shelly Short is knowledgable and hard working. She will represent the 7th district constituents well unlike the smoke and mirrors her opponent presented. this is a tough job and I wish her well in the future. It is not a job I would want.
tons_of_wash spews:
well, oly, pleading guilty sure seems like a detail that shouldn’t be overlooked. If Roger Rabbit quotes the Spokesman Review correctly (above @3), then you really need to pause and ponder Shelly Short’s quote: ‘I made this pledge because it is time to draw a line in the sand and say enough is enough. Frankly, the state should buckle down and handle its financial affairs in the same way our families do when times are tough,’ her campaign website told voters.”
Considering all the back taxes the Short’s owe and her husband’s guilty plea, all her hard work and knowledge won’t make up for her lack of judgement and fiscal responsibility.
