Republican incumbent Commissioner of Public Lands Doug Sutherland has finally conceded the race to Democratic challenger Peter Goldmark.
In a phone call to The Daily World this morning, Sutherland said he was disappointed with the loss, which he blamed on the voters of King County.
“At this juncture, the people of King County have spoken,” Sutherland said. “As a rule of thumb for Republicans, you do well in the rest of the state and do at least 40 percent in King County and you can win. It’s been that way for the last couple of decades and it’s just getting worse.”
Yeah, well, it’s an odd thing about America, but we tend to apportion votes by the person rather than the square mile, and, well, King County is where the largest chunk of the people live. In fact, while Goldmark only won five of 39 counties, those five counties still account for about 45% of the electorate, so it wasn’t nearly as narrow a win as Sutherland bitterly makes it out to be.
Still, to Sutherland’s credit, he did concede only two weeks after the election, which is about three years, eleven and a half months quicker than Dino Rossi.
YLB spews:
Yes! Maybe Sutherland will now learn to keep his hands to himself.

Yeh and a BIG FUCK YOU from King County.
Fucking corporate lackey.

Did Darcy ever call Dave? If she didn’t, I will be very disappointed with her.

Wow, what a day! Looks like for his 85th Birthday present, Alaska just gave Ted Stevens his walking papers by 3724 votes:

Maybe we should forgive Sen. Ted and make him co-chairman on Lieberman’s committees.
Roger Rabbit spews:
When you look at some of those “red” counties, they don’t look all that bloody red — maybe Dougie wouldn’t have lost if he’d scored a little better with his “base.”
Clark 53% – 47%
Cowlitz 52% – 48%
Island 52.6% – 47.4%

Anybody care about the stupid Troll and his stupid questions? I thought not.
Go away Troll, nobody cares about you or your dumb questions

Long live the evil voters of King County.
And I just wrote my “good riddance” letter to Teddy Stevens, R-Earmark. Still have to write one to Dole.
Somebody please post Deeeno’s mailing address so he can get his own letter.
Jim, still never having tried to operate a f*cking backpipe assembly.
Troll spews:

Ekim, I have no idea who you are, but on this blog we like to stick to the issues. If you can’t abide by that, perhaps this isn’t the blog for you.
K spews:
Oh please, troll, a greater load of BS has never been spewed. As one who frequently leads with “some say…” or deliberately distorts, you gotta be joking.
And when you are called on falsehoods, you vanish.
YellowPup spews:
What a crybaby. Good riddance.
M spews:
Yay! Dino and Doug are proof that massive amounts of corporate money can’t buy every election.
mehy spews:
Typical r: it’s never my fault, It’s Bush’s fault, or I just didn’t let the voters know how conservative I really am. Always blame someone else, instead of realizing that the voters finally figured out who’s hitting them in the back of the head.
michael spews:
Is it odd that a guy who lives in Pierce County and was the County Executive of Pierce County concedes the election with a phone call to the Aberdeen newspaper?
michael spews:
@8
He might as well have blamed the 98,275 turncoats in Spokane county that voted for Goldmark. They pretty much canceled out the Republican votes in the lesser populated parts of Eastern WA.
And aint’ it grand seeing Okanogan County go for a Democrat!
tensor spews:
Will no one rid us of our shadenfreude overload? Not anytime soon, I hope!
Someday, we’ll once again have Republican politicians who believe in smaller taxes, effective government, no snooping, no bogus “culture war”, and NO WHINING. Until then, it’s a one-party state.
proud leftist spews:
Hey, beyond the partisan hooaahs that we all want to give ourselves, we actually just got ourselves a remarkably capable fellow into public office. Doug Sutherland was just a politician who picked a statewide office he could win, regardless of whether he had anything to offer the office. Peter Goldmark actually has–I suppose this is bad amongst you Palinist, anti-elitists out there–a Ph.D. in a scientific field. Moreover, he runs a ranch. I’m pretty pleased to have someone who knows something about public lands being in charge of public lands. That shouldn’t be a novel concept.

Rossi is indeed a whining sore loser of losers.
But in his concession press conference, he dropped the “my opponent, the incumbent” crap.
I give him grudging credit.
Particle Man spews:
Yup, YLB @ 21.
Dino more than made up for 17 years of lies and corruption when for 30 seconds he pretended to have class.
Yes Particle Man loves Dino now.
Oh Dino won’t you run again…We miss you so…snif

@20: Kent
Thanks for the trenchant political observation. I’ll be sure to look out for the “rider” vote.
Did you ever say what they were riding?
Oh, never mind….
correctnotright spews:
@19: Republicans are against competence. Look at all the examples:
Bush
Cheney
Safavian
Gonzalez
Brownie
Palin
Bush appointees at Justice, EPA and Interior
Lorita Doan (former GSA head)
Clarence Thomas
the problem is the competent republicans (when you can find them) turn out to be even more devious is destroying the government:
Rumsfeld
Mukasey
Stephen Johnson (makes the competent list for his supreme ability to obfuscate the truth)
Particle Man spews:
As for Doug Sutherland, this was a hard loss and his slow public acknowledgment was unfortunate.
Don’t get me wrong, I am completely thrilled that Peter Goldmark will take over as leader of DNR. More needs to be done to protect the folks down stream and DNR land from the forest practices that go on there. Much more needs to be done in terms of public access, recreation and to generate power and revenue from wind, solar and geothermal on public lands.
Still, this office effects areas across the state with a much lessor effect in King County and this may have been in part what Doug was talking about, in terms of where the votes came from.
One additional point I would make is that I see no relationship between the politics of Dino Rossi and Doug Sutherland other than the party affiliation.
Suzie Q spews:
Goldmark won in counties with a lot of state forestland: Jefferson, Whatcom, Snohomish and King.
Sutherland is going out with an ugly cloud over his head – smarmy comments about his opponent’s agenda. Goldmark was clear about his agenda: sustainable management of the public’s land. I’m guessing that’s why the citizens of counties with large areas of state forest land voted for Goldmark. We’ve grown weary of cleaning up the timber industry’s costly mess.
Particle Man spews:
Suzie Q, the facts are that Goldmark did well in counties all over the state as a result of what he ran on and who he is. He still lost many of those counties though as a result of being a D and as a result of environmental support. Timber towns fear environmentalists like me and tend to vote R cuz the enviros support D’s.
We will be much better off with Peter as Commish
