It seems odd to me that someone who claims to have been an Lt in the US Navy would make the claim that as a middie he outranked a fireman. Since that simply isn’t true and anyone would have been taught that in any basic training, including OCS.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I was Honorably Discharged. Just because somebody has a Capt’s Mast on their record doesn’t mean they will automatically be given a General Discharge, Less Than Honorable, Bad Conduct Discharge, or a Dishonorable dischage.
In order to get out on bad paper you have to be convicted in a courts martial and the UCMJ must specify that dishonorable discharge be applied to the conviction.
As you know when you separte from the military it’s either Administrative reasons or Punitive reasons.
I left the service for E.O.S. End Of Obligated service. In other words, my time was up — administrative reasons.
If I were discharged as a result of my Capts. Mast then it would have been a punitive separation and BDC could’ve applied, but it didn’t.

The thin gold band on their caps signify the “officer” status.
Although, it doesn’t hold much sway in the real world navy and I never bothered to salute these guys, nor were they foolish enough to get into a beef with an enlisted guy on the piers over it either.

One thing you would expect from an “officer and a gentlemen by an act of congress” is that their word is their bond. Honesty and integrity is what most people, military or civilian, would expect from an officer in the US military.

The internal spying thing is something that comes to light every now and again. It was particlualry a problem with the FBI spying on just about everyone during the Vietnam era, especially the anti-war movement.
As I recall, the CIA even got its pee-pee wacked back in those days as punishment for becoming involved in spying and interfering with internal matters. Frank Church was a guy in the Senate who I admired from that time. He held the FBI’s and CIA’s feet to the fire over a lot of their shennanigans.
The problem with the FBI is that they have an “us against them” attitude. Anyone who is not in the FBI is a potential enemy at worst and a nuisance at best. The CIA, on the other hand, thinks that it is the government, the FBI is a bunch of dolts, and all this stuff about democratically elected officials is bunk.
As you can tell, I’ve got a pretty cynical attitude towards the FBA and the CIA.

The Pew Research Center recently updated a question about happiness that the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago has been asking since 1972.
In every asking of the question, ROLL CALL reports, Republicans have been happier than Democrats.
Republicans tend to be better off than Democrats, and that is one explanation for the happiness gap. But when the researchers controlled for household income, Republicans at all income levels were happier than Democrats at those same income levels.
As for ideology, conservative Republicans were happier than conservative Democrats, and moderate to liberal Republicans were happier than comparable Democrats.

As I recall, middies have a courtesy rank just above WO’s and just below Ensigns. However, they have no legal authority and are not in the command structure. Since middies are not sworn in, they are technically civilians.
This is different in the royal navy, they do have legal authority and are in the command structure there, or that was true in the 80s.
If you look at this article you will see that they are not commissioned. The reason this came up as an issue during my boot camp time is that a guy going through basic was caught having sex with a girl from a NJROTC cadet group going through their own version of basic. Rank, obviously, was of some importance.

The campaign-donation scandal that jolted Seattle City Hall three years ago has spun into a major FBI investigation of a strip-club operation long headed by Frank Colacurcio Sr., according to law-enforcement officials familiar with the case.

Today’s big news story is the death threats against Supreme Court Justices Ginsburg and O’Conner by right-wing lunatic-fringe wackos. These retards are incited by people like Pat Robertson and Ann Coulter, both of whom have publicly suggested that “liberal” Supreme Court justices should be killed. Why does Coulter still have a license to practice law? As an officer of the court, she has a duty to respect the court, and in any U.S. jurisdiction threatening a judge is more than enough reason to disbar a lawyer. She’s unfit to practice law. Further, threatening a federal judge is a felony; she should be doing 30 years in Leavenworth.

What will I retire from?
Let’s see getting up at 5:30 M-F get working by 7:00 am and working until 5:30- 6:00 pm everyday. Working and hustling my ass off every day so that I live debt free, with the exception of my home which I’ll have free and clear within 8 years. Before I’m 55. Other than that I have ZERO long term debt. I’m now in a position to pay cash for car purchases every 4.5 years. Paying interest on loans is for people who don’t get compounding interest, or are suckers with their money.
I’ve already paid for my two kids college educations through the state’s GET Program (Guaranteed Education Tuition) 800 GET units. I did that in 3 1/2 years.
The way my IRA has been growing since I started managing it will produce for me enough money to live my middle-class American lifestyle, travel when I please and yes, put something aside for my grandkids.
I’ll be happier then, than I am now and you know, I’m pretty damned happy at the moment with my life.
