    SEPTA in Philadelphia has awarded a contract for the replacement of the current Kawasaki streetcars used on the Subway-Surface lines and the two former Red Arrow Suburban lines. This was a tough one for the bidders, although 130 firm and 30 options will make them adapt to Philadelphia’s wired track gauge. The existing city routes are single end cars while the suburban lines are double end cars.

    Alstom was the winner, and they acquired Bombardier who built Toronto’s fleet, which the legacy lines also use a non-standard gauge. Though these cars will be built at Alstom’s US facility in NY.

    I was hoping Brookville, who built the new cars for Tacoma got the contract, their model, being built in PA, is called the Liberty. Unfortunately, they are at a disadvantage if operators choose ADA access to mean full low floor. The LIBERTY follows the SKODA/Inekon designs used in Tacoma, Seattle ,and Portland, where only the center module is low floor. Worldwide(except the US) low floor when it comes to an LRV is now 100%.     A jury that receives the case at 4pm on a Friday and declines every offer of taking even a meal break is a jury that is angry for being there. Tells us all nine had arrived at a verdict for the plaintiff before they even retired to deliberate. There was no question. No controversy. Nothing for them to deliberate about.

    It tells us that Loudoun County is under some kind of delusional ideological spell when it comes to their public schools. This should have been a slam-dunk settlement. The $5 million awarded, plus the legal costs for years of pre-trial prep, depositions, investigations, motions, and a week of trial could have been $1 million and a few dozen hours of admin. Everyone involved here has the exact same trial record of evidence as the jury. Yet weirdos in the Loundon County Board of Supervisors instead choose to back their lunatic crusader Sheriff and the fearful and incompetent school district costing their taxpayers millions more and ruining lives in the process.

    It also helps explain what has made Loundon County such fertile ground for the latest ultra-MAGA Republican moral panic about cat litter boxes in public school bathrooms. Loudoun County Sheriff Chapman has been testing the waters to run for higher office for most of the last ten years. This moral panic and “stranger-danger” delusion overwhelming a suburban county is evidence of the long-term efforts of groups like Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officer’s Association, Protect America Now, Oath Keepers, and others to recruit, and leverage local law enforcement to preserve Republican minority rule wherever possible.
