Wednesday Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 2/4/26, 8:13 am

Hello! I hope that you’re doing well.

Often in these open threads, I will suggest that you call or email your legislator, or member of Congress or City Council members or whatever. So let me suggest a few tips for when you do.

Calling is probably the best, not least because there might be some verify that you aren’t a robot things. Do what you’re comfortable with.

If you are calling, you can say whatever before you actually call. Many organizations will have a script, but even if they don’t, you can write it down before calling. You will probably talk to an answering machine, especially if you call outside of business hours.

Only contact the people who represent you, sorry.

Generally, it should go something like:

Hi, my name is [name] from [location in the district you are actually from],

I’m calling about [issue or specific bill]. I am urging you to [support/oppose] it because [1 or 2 reasons, maybe a short personal story or connection to the issue].

Thank you

That ‘s it. The more you do it, the better you’ll be at it. Emails can be similar.

WaPo lost half its audience during the Biden years:

Both Lewis and Murray warned the staff in June 2024, not February 2025, that the Washington Post was on a collision course with collapse. Lewis and Murray informed them at that time that the paper had lost half its audience in the previous three years and had lost $77 million in 2023 alone.

Spend three years explaining to the world that there is nothing wrong with Joe Biden, all evidence to the contrary, and some credibility – and readership – is irretrievably lost.

    6,

Should include federal court reform by expanding to 17 circuits and expanding the seats on each.

The Supreme Court itself is making this a necessity in light of ICE/DHS and other blatant abuses of rights. In many recent rulings on civil rights lawsuits against feds found to have violated First, Fourth, Fifth, and Fourteenth Ammendment rights the SCOTUS has narrowed the availability of remedies, and restricted the use of common classes to combine plaintiffs. The result is that, for example, each and every U.S. citizen who has had their front door kicked in, their care windows smashed out, their property seized, their teeth broken out, the eye sockets ruptured, the eyeballs crushed, or their organs ruptured by violent, lawless attacks from the GOP Death Squads are forced to bring individual suit, one by one, in federal court. In the places where the GOP is carrying out their terror campaigns of neighborhood attacks and public executions, the courts are now overwhelmed with valid claims for damages. And the administration is slow-rolling, and stonewalling the courts in their efforts to process the lawsuits and schedule hearings.

Thus, the absolute necessity of court expansion is being driven by the GOP itself and its clownservative SCOTUS majority. Completely innocent littigants who have suffered multiple gunshot wounds at the hands of corrupt and incompetent DHS agents will otherwise have to face years of delay in search of remedies for their injuries. Cleaning up the GOP mess requires court expansion.

It’s actually part of a new trend in the Olympics based on new IOC policy to encourage host cities to avoid the White Elephant problem. Athens 2004 was probably one of the worst examples, $11 Billion to build the modern ruins of Athens, although the Shot Put event was held in an actual ruin from the ancient Olympics. Paris was hardly a surfing city, so the event was held in Tahiti, in the overseas collectivity of French Polynesia. Organizers in LA didn’t have a suitable for the Softball event, rather than build one, they are using the stadium that hosts the College Softball World Series. The Colliseum is about to make Olympic History, first to host events in three Olympiads.

The biggest problem with swing voters, like PI above, is that the often swing back. They have an annoying habit of forgetting just how awful Republicans are about every two years or so. And most of them seem pre-armed with innate biases against an inclusive political party which results in them demanding to be recognized as Special Boys and Girls by that party every two years. And the problem with that is the way they want to see that recognition expressed is by the inclusive party shitting all over all the other people in the party.

At page 6 of this transcript, a federal judge reminds Trump administration attorneys that

a court order is not advisory and it is not conditional. It is not something that any agency can treat as optional while it decides how or whether to comply with the court order. The authority exercised by the Court is derived from Article III of the Constitution and is not by dint of the parties’ agreement with the ruling itself.

The agency in question, of course, is ICE.

The judge also reminded the government attorneys that individuals unlawfully detained by ICE are “people.” The government attorney’s now-famous “this job sucks” comment comes at page 31 of this transcript. By reading this transcript, you will learn that literally hundreds of habeas petitions weren’t complied with, and the government attorneys representing ICE in federal court couldn’t find out where people who shouldn’t have been arrested in the first place were.

This transcript depicts a situation of near-total chaos. Attorneys who represented ICE in immigration courts volunteered to help out with the federal court caseload. They were given no orientation, training, support — not even access to the DOJ system. They got no cooperation from anyone. To get ICE officials to respond to information requests, this attorney had to threaten to resign, quit, walk out, and leave them to fend for themselves before a federal judge who was already holding ICE in contempt of court for noncompliance with dozens of court orders.

I write an e-mail with big, bold font … and I said, here’s what it fail and we need to fix it. You can’t just have people sitting in jail and drag me into court and explain to the Court why the system fail. And if they can’t help me, then I am not here — I’m not meant for this job. And to be honest, Your Honor, I did put for a request to be transferred back, but no one were willing to come here to stand in front of you to explain and/or to help to improve the system.

This is an agency that needs to be abolished, or at least stripped of authority to detain anyone until they get their shit together.

Needless to say, if you — a U.S. citizen — are driving on city streets, obeying traffic laws, and minding your own business, not protesting or following ICE or anything, but find yourself intermingled with unmarked ICE vehicles, and road-raging ICE assholes attack you, drag you out of your car, and haul you off to detention, you’re going to rot behind bars while ICE loses track of your whereabouts, can’t tell the court where you are, and ignores a dozen court orders for your release. That’s the system portrayed by this transcript. And you have no recourse because of immunity.

ICE’s existence is inimical to our constitutional rights and incompatible with a free society. In a free society, this agency shouldn’t exist.

I don’t want to say that at some point our citizens and legal residents may have to resort to self-defense to protect their lives and freedom, because that might be twisted by an unscrupulous poster into appearing to condone violence, and I’m against all violence, but for years the GOP’s principal argument for removing all controls and limits on civilians possessing military-grade firearms has been that someday The People might have to rise up against a tyrannical government, and certainly what we’re seeing from ICE right now is tyranny. So all I want to say is that if innocent people start defending themselves from attacks by ICE tyrants, that was the Republicans’ idea not mine. And they’ll probably also be the ones doing it; they have the guns.

Normally I wouldn’t support this kind of thing, but since Republicans are doing it, we have to do it too. What’s good for the goose, is good for the gander.

I have my own plan for redistricting Washington. We have 10 House seats, so let’s draw 10 horizontal stripes across the state, with 10% of the state’s population in each stripe. Each district would begin on the Pacific Coast and terminate at the Idaho border. Those with more population would be narrower than those with less population. In every district the majority of the population would reside in Western Washington, because that’s where 78% of the state’s population resides. Seems fair to me. We don’t need any GOP districts. The GOP isn’t a legitimate political party; it’s a violent white supremacist organization actively engaging in domestic terrorism.

Socialist Imam Mamdani has a plan to replace HVAC in public housing with heat pumps.

Is it expensive? kind of. But it’s about 5% of NYPD budget so there’s probably a way.

Will it save tens of millions of dollars of Energy use every single year going forward. Yes.

HA Commenting Policy

It may be hard to believe from the vile nature of the threads, but yes, we have a commenting policy. Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
