Monday Open Thread

Good morning to the legislature. A short session starts today. We have both a current budget shortfall and a structural one with our upside down tax policy. I am glad Governor Ferguson has proposed an income tax on people earning over a million dollars. That will be good for 2030 Washington state. But right now, Representative Scott is proposing a payroll tax to compensate for the immediate problems.

But it’s not just budget stuff. Also:

  • There is a bill to ban police officers from hiding their face.
  • There are the garbage initiatives that aren’t going to pass but might suck some of the oxygen from discussions, and will likely go to the voters.
  • Making AI chatbots identify themselves as such.

It’s a good time to write your legislators. And let’s hear any bills that you’re interested in in the comments.

Coming back yesterday afternoon I passed through US Customs and the only ID check was my photograph. I was asked only if I brought in foreign-purchased alcohol or cigarettes.

Facial recognition took less than 5 seconds, I never opened my passport, and I was on my way.

This is the type of facial recognition technology that liberals think is unfair when used on the streets because it might too successfully identify looters, rioters, and other violent criminals.

What’s wrong with a five second stop at the CBP counter?

Crazy how people will watch Elon Musk literally bypass authoritarian regimes to give people internet access during literal blackouts and uprisings, then turn around and say he’s done nothing good for humanity.

loot the federal bureaucracy of money, regulatory means on his shitty companies and private data for its own benefit, behave like an entitled asshole and sell fewer of its crappy cars in this country.

No perspective is more blind to reality than …

… the presumption that going lightly on the absolute worst of society will turn out well.

He randomly attacked a man with a pipe in the Loop.

The victim suffered facial fractures, lost teeth, and required multiple reconstructive surgeries.

    It was his 57th arrest.

But his plea deal will not require him to spend a single day in prison.

Now, don’t despair, because there is a bright side to this. Statistically speaking, the person who got their face bashed in is most likely a Democrat voter who thinks that going light on the worst of society will turn out well.

    Or, used to think that.

@5 Incident happened in 2022. Perp was in jail 752 days.

If only the liberal Megyn Kelly and SCOTUS permitted pants shitter to keep the Guard in Chicago, then maybe a summary execution could happen.

And give a dumbfuck jag off fuel.

In the latest Gallup data report, since the Fat Hitler innauguration more voters than ever are identifying as “independunce”.

But along with that, a complete reversal of the majority of “independunce” who now “lean” Democrat versus Republicans, with Republican lean falling three points and Democratic lean gaining three points. A six point swing where Democrats in 2024 trailed by one point they now lead by five. And overall lean (combining party id with party lean) has produced an inversion of 2024 with Republicans falling from a 4 point lead over Democrats at the end of 2024 to an eight point deficit to Democrats by the end of 2025.

When Iran falls, the only Middle East nation left with any substantial military capability will be Israel.

Which is why liberals find it difficult to support the Iranian people.

No, the government DOES NOT have the right to know where I go every moment of every day.

Monday, entered monitored area at 8:09:. Drove to Stonewall Jackson High where son Rob 18 544-76-2461 exited car. Continued to Shell at 4th and Clinton and entered store. Inside 0:02:25 and exited with a medium hot drink, a banana and a 8oz package of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Continued on Front Street at 6MPH over the posted speed limit. Took on-ramp onto Trump Turnpike westbound surveillance points at 3 miles, 5miles and 10 miles confirmed before exiting surveillance area citizen is know to work at infotech and cooperating metropolitan surveillance area forward vehicle entering underground garage at 08:46.22.

That you compare a boarder entry checkpoint to constant monitoring is very Soviet of you.

@5 And here we have Doctor Dumbfuck celebrating some poor innocent sap get his face smashed by a criminal psychopath because the victim is in a blue city of a blue state. And also because, as we’ve seen again and again, the dumbfuck troll is himself a psychopath who loves violence.

By the way, the reason the perp won’t “spend a single day in prison” is because he did the time in a jail, although I agree two years seems light for the crime and his past record.

Last night Trump appointed himself “President of Venezuela.” I’m pretty sure that’s not what the Venezuelan people want or Machado was hoping for. Trading one dictator for another isn’t progress. At least Maduro was their dictator. In my country I would, for example, prefer Trump over Xi, though not by much.

    Very law-abiding citizen of me.

I understand that you find it problematic that after you leave the riot in which you torched three squad cars and laid waste to a Starbucks, you are unhappy that some signal-mounted camera catches your license plate when you climb into your Tesla to head home so that you can go onto HA and complain about Tesla.

@14 By the way, an innocent motorist has a right to defend himself against an armed road rager who’s threatening his life simply for being behind him, and doesn’t have to wait for the armed road rager threatening his life to pull out a gun first to do it.
