  1. The air travel meltdown coming, too bad it doesn’t hit areas without alternatives. Ironically it looks like Amtrak is doing ok so far, but the situations that insulate them during shutdowns hasn’t been tested this long. If Amtrak does suspend a few routes, my guess will be the LA-New Orleans Subset Limited, still on the Tri-weekly schedule pre-Amtrak. Trains that run under 750 miles are state supported, a rule that almost killed the DFW-OKC Train this year.(It’s why I believe that Section 209 of the PRIIAA of 2008 needs a review.)

  2. Been observing this process, but doubt it can happen here. In Europe, passenger rolling stock tenders, whether by incumbent national operators or local/regional authorities that tender regional services as part of the EU’s Rail Liberalization Plan, can be very lucrative. It’s become a tradition for the losers to sue, but cost alone isn’t the criteria for award, as the competing tenders are scored on technical aspects too. Recently happened with SNCB/NMBS in Belgium, PKP IC in Poland, and looks to be happening with SBB and the Zurich S-Bahn. Although for Stadler’s, losing a contract with the National operator in the largest city in their home market, has got to hurt. They do have the emerging North American commuter/regional market plus Sunday contract in Atlanta, and Light Rail in Salt Lake City, where their US Factory is located.

  3. So far due to the air travel issues, Amtrak isn’t reporting too many sell outs, but prices are spiking. One practice from the airlines Amtrak adopted that actually fits, is dynamic pricing. Would be great if they had extra rolling stock, but the pool is not that big. Another trick Amtrak does on LD Trains, mainly on the East Coast, is if the train shares a station with a frequent corridor service, the LD train Coach fare will be higher than the corridor. Still some willing to pay. Last time I took the Empire Builder to Spokane, I saw a few riding to Everett, and one to Edmonds.(It was an off peak run, just one coach, the diner, a sleeper, and the crew dorm, which has a few rooms available for sale.(They pick up two coaches in Spokane with the Portland section)

Any demonstrator unrest or incidents that showed an intent to disrupt ICE Fat Ass operations were successfully and promptly dealt with by PPB, despite FOX news “correspondents” and other “independent” propagandists recycling AI altered imagery from other times and other places.

    None of that was even disputed by the DOJ lawyers during the hearings, nor in any of the briefs filed. They even stipulated to the fact set presented by PPB. That’s now part of the fact record that can not be disputed in any subsequent appeals and that subsequent courts must take into consideration when reviewing any appeal.

    It is so much less violent in person than you imagined. Couple guys who are local line cooks and a campgrill the locals say are there most Fridays free food. Inflatable costumes, the occasional dance or sing-along.

    In two hours one SUV exited, got shouted at and the three guys on the roof a constant presence.

    This makes some sense. Republicans have been saying reopen the government first, then negotiate on ACA subsidies. Under this deal that’s what they’d get, and the Democrats would get the ability to shut down the government again if they don’t negotiate, negotiate in bad faith, or no ACA deal is reached. What’s missing is immediate relief from spiking ACA premiums, so it’s more of a win for Republicans than for Democrats; but based on The Hill’s reporting, it sounds like it might have enough Democratic votes to go through today or tomorrow.

Wouldn’t mind going Cashless, ORCA use via apps or the card is already necessary as many Metro trips involve a switch to LINK or another agency and ORCA is the only way an interagency transfer works now. Fareboxes are due for replacement, 40 years old and the manufacturer has built several newer models since then,

    NYCTA is in the middle of a decades long modernization of an important part of its antiquated subway infrastructure, the signals. They use a Fixed Block system that relies on manned interlockings, very inefficient, and it will take decades to upgrade to the modern CBTC.

    It is fair because you are incorrect. By receiving a benefit rather than a higher salary employees already get an implicit deduction from an otherwise higher tax bill. AND they still get to claim the standard deduction.

    The BBC’s most senior executive, director general Tim Davie, and the chief executive of the news division, Deborah Turness, both quit after the leak of a deeply critical memo that, among other things, revealed that the BBC had misleadingly edited a speech by US President Donald Trump to make it appear that he had directly called for violence on January 6, 2021.

    In a note to staff on Sunday afternoon, Davie said his resignation was “entirely my decision.” He added that as director general, he took “ultimate responsibility” for mistakes made by the BBC.

    Turness said the controversy over a documentary made by the BBC’s “Panorama” series had “reached a stage where it is causing damage to the BBC – an institution that I love.”

    The unspoken point is that President Trump did not call for violence. Just the opposite, in fact.

  89. On systems outside of NYC, this is usually a bad idea. Usually overnight is the best chance for doing maintenance without disruption. Probably getting a schedule change before the governance reform part of the Northeastern Illinois RTA kicks in, the new Northern Illinois Transit Authority will have jurisdiction over scheduling and fares. Good thing to, I remember Mayor Lightfoot fought a plan to reduce fares on portions of the Metra Electric and Rock Island Districts to match CTA fares , partly because there is a longstanding Illinois law that mandates the components of the former RTA have 50% fare recovery. That rule was suspended during the pandemic, where METRA had lost 95% of its ridership at one point.
