Game 7, are you excited? This year’s M’s have been pretty special.

I moved here as a kid, but with a different team. So I didn’t live and die with them the same way as some of you did, but they have been a staple of the city. But I was here for the Griffey years. And 116 wins. And so many Almost Live! jokes in the lean years.

The fans who stuck with them through terrible seasons deserve this one. The fans who saw bad games in a bad Kingdome deserve this season. The fans who want to games in the middle of the playoff drought deserve this season.

Of course sports isn’t about deserve. And game 7 on the road is not going to be easy. Go M’s.

    Mosquitoes arrive in Iceland

    If you had the scientific interest you would find that the identified species is Culiseta annulata. That species overwinters in caves in northwest Russia, which gets colder than Iceland does.

    When the individuals of Cs. annulata and Culex spp. on cave walls were counted during overwintering and their numbers were compared, a similar decrease in their numbers was found, but when catalase activity was analyzed, a significant difference between Cs. annulata and Cx. pipiens pipiens L. was revealed, with higher activity in Cs. annulata. Higher catalase activity in Cs. annulata, as compared with that in Cx. p. pipiens, was also revealed in males collected in fall, which indicates the true interspecific differences (not linked with blood consumption) and suggests a better resistance of Cs. annulata to low temperatures.

    It’s because of the evolution of catalase

    Catalase is an antioxidant enzyme, which is important for lifespan extension and stress resistance during diapause in overwintering mosquitoes.

    in this species that it can live in cold climates.

    So it’s evolution, and international commerce, and not “Global Warming”, that explains the existence of mosquitoes in Iceland.

  28. In a split screen yesterday CNN had dueling MAGAT Congress members (on vacation) simultaneously blaming an “International Conspiracy of Jews” for the massive, nationwide #NOKINGS protest, and then also claiming that the purpose of the protest was to spread “antisemitism”.

    I tried to explain on Saturday to a local journalist about the frogs and other inflatable costumes. I told them that to some very significant extent our politics have ceased to be a battle between ideas. And that a very generous portion of the blame for that is owed to so-called journalists. We live in a post-idea world, dominated by images and perceptions. The frogs and kazoo bands and line dancing furries make it very hard for anyone to perceive ICE agents and ICE facilities as being “beseiged”.

    Of course they are not. But how do you portray that?
    MAGAputbican, pro-fascist members of Congress aren’t always on message. But it’s more important to remember that the “message” isn’t always what it appears. At least it isn’t if you are searching for a coherent set of ideas. There are no ideas, when it comes to fascists other than power and authority. Those are their only ideas.

    The pivot towards owning the fascism is remarkable.

    We must hope that it’s premature. But if so, then it’s honestly helpful. The impact of 7 million “old Boomers” carrying signs “made by Jews at Kinkos” is that, despite all the fascism, Republicans could not stop it, could not disrupt it, could not even offer a coherent response to it. It shows people that America is not fascist yet. The fascism still has a long way to go before it can consolidate enough power and fear to prevent such a massive, public uprising in opposition to it.

    Republicans bear-hugging the idea of Fat Hitler as “President-for-Life” may be invaluable to our cause. He’s never been very popular. But, having grown high on the smell of their own shits, Republicans have all lost sight of that.
