“The David Goldstein Show” tonight on Newsradio 710-KIRO

by Goldy — Sunday, 8/27/06, 2:19 pm

It’s the last Sunday in August, so what better way to bid farewell to our region’s short summer than to come inside, turn up the radio and tune in to “The David Goldstein Show tonight on Newsradio 710-KIRO, from 7PM to 10PM. Of course, the lineup could change in response to breaking news, but here’s what I think I’ll be talking about tonight:

7PM: In an Oprah moment, Republican US Senate wannabe Mike!™ McGavick revealed that some thirteen years ago he was pulled over for a DUI with a literally staggering 0.17 percent blood-alcohol level. Was this revelation a shrewd political move to inoculate the candidate from negative attacks, a gesture of genuine contrition, or a boneheaded blunder? Seattle Times political reporter/blogger David Postman joins me to discuss this and other political issues of the day.

8PM: King County Council Chair Larry Phillips joins me to discuss the prospects of a proposed county charter amendment that seeks to take the politics out of the elections office by making the county auditor an, um, elected position. Go figure. But if you have other questions for the Council Chair, here’s your chance to ask him.

9PM: The first hurricane of the season has formed in the South Atlantic, just in time to commemorate the first anniversary of the natural and political disaster that was Hurricane Katrina. How did the federal government’s failed response to this long anticipated emergency change your view of the Bush administration, and do you believe our nation is ready to respond to another major disaster or terrorist attack?

Tune in tonight (or listen to the live stream) and give me a call: 1-877-710-KIRO (5476).

    Day 6 August 27, 2006 Where’s Goldy?

    Mayor Nickels’
    unprecedented tax increase proposal
    and
    Tim Eyman’s opposition campaign
    not only screws the taxpayers into paying extra for basic services, but it also really puts Goldy and the rest of you seattle moonbats in a helluva predicament. I’ve been taunting Goldy for some time now with my “Where’s Goldy” series, and he still won’t tell us where he stands. No doubt, he’s between a rock and a hard place trying to figure out what to do. So as a true compassionate conservative, I’ll lay out the options here for ya Goldy:

    1) Open up your wallet and pay more and more property tax every year until you are forced out of your home. Even if you can do it, do you want to make seattle a place where only the rich can live? Or do you not give a fuck about anybody else?

    2) Join Eyman’s campaign to fight defeat the tax increase, and expose yourself to be the fucking hypocrite that you are. Admit that you are wrong about taxpayer rights, and thank Tim in pubic for giving you the right to vote on major policy issues.

    3) Support the tax hike and agree that the tax money has to be raised, but make somebody other than you pay. You could take the tried and true class envy approach and make those “rich people” in Magnolia and Queen Ann pick up the tab. Remember, a “fair tax” in moonbat parlance is a tax that the other guy has to pay.

    4) Or just keep quiet and hope I go away. That’s not gonna happen.

    Redneck sez:

    “Mayor Nickels’ unprecedented tax increase proposal … really puts Goldy and the rest of you seattle moonbats in a helluva predicament.”

    Reality check:

    1. I’ve already said I oppose Mayor Nickels’ road maintenance tax, because I don’t see why he needs $1.8 billion to pay for a $500 million backlog of road and bridge maintenance.

    2. The Seattle Times editorial that Redneck linked to says, “All six liberal Democrats running in the heated 43rd Legislative District in Seattle told The Times’ Editorial Board they oppose the mayor’s $1.6 billion roads improvement levy on property taxes.” Apparently Redneck doesn’t read the articles he links to.

    3. I don’t recall Goldy or anybody else on this board endorsing Nickels’ tax package.

    So what’s the “predicament?” That we agree on something? That’s a hell of a predicament you’re in, Redneck! How about paying the $100 you owe Goldy. I’m glad you’re against Nickels’ tax, the more the merrier! While you’re at it, pay the $100 you owe Goldy!

    Redneck, now that I’ve got you on board against Nickels’ sneaky dishonest tax ripoff, what will it take to bring you around on minimum wage? Pay the $100 you owe Goldy. What will it take to you on board against the GOP’s sneaky dishonest minimum wage ripoff? P.S., pay the $100 you owe Goldy. How about if we take up a collection to send you to a Jesus camp? No, I don’t mean the one run by that crazy woman in North Dakota who trains kids to be jihadists; I’m thinking of one of those places in California where you sing “Kumbaya” while the camp counselors help you overcome your sociopathic urges and get you right with the Lord. While you’re there, pay the $100 you owe Goldy.

  13. Roger Rabbit spews:

    mark the buttfuck doesn’t have much to do today. Work must be slow at the “Producer Factory.” Let’s go over this tax thing again, as he doesn’t seem to understand it.

    When the tax rate is 100%, revenues are zero, because there’s no economic activity. When the tax rate is zero, revenues also are zero, regardless of how much economic activity there is. Obviously, there is a point somewhere between a 0% tax rate and a 100% tax rate where revenues are maximized.

    If the tax rate is below this point, you lose revenue and will lose even more revenue by cutting taxes. If the tax rate is above this point, cutting taxes will increase revenue.

    Now let’s look at the recent numbers.

    2000 – $1,372,376,000,000 (baseline year)
    2001 – $1,297,063,000,000
    2002 – $1,152,413,000,000
    2003 – $1,069,364,000,000
    2004 – $1,146,664,000,000
    2005 – $1,279,114,000,000 (estimate)

    (Date from official sources)

    As you can see, Bush’s tax cutting resulted in decreased revenues in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Although revenue began growing in 2004, it still is not back to the 2001 level, let alone the pre-tax cut 2000 level. Thus, in all 5 years since Bush cut taxes, revenue has been less than what it was before he cut taxes.

    But there’s more. Virtually all of the revenue increase in 2004 and 2005 resulted from higher taxes paid by corporations (which are making record profits) and CEOs (who are making unprecedented salaries and bonuses). Although the economy as a whole is growing, none of that growth is trickling down to workers, who have made no wage gains at all, in real terms, under Bush. Nor has the economy made real job gains, as the economy is not creating enough jobs in most months to even keep up with workforce growth, which means the number of unemployed workers continues to grow.

    But wait, there’s still more! The higher corporate and CEO incomes that produced the tax collections responsible for all of the revenue growth in 2004 and 2005 are due in no small part to the artificial economic stimulus of deficit spending. Under Bush, federal spending has grown more than 3 times as fast as it did under Clinton — and all that spending growth is being put on a credit card we’ll eventually have to pay. Take away the deficit spending, and you’ve got no economic growth, and no revenue growth.

    It’s one thing to cut taxes by cutting spending. It’s another thing to finance tax cuts by borrowing. Government borrowing drives up interest rates, resulting in higher government debt service payments that may more than offset any increased revenues resulting from the artificial stimulus of deficit spending. And government borrowing competes with the private sector for savings and capital, reducing private sector investment and, consequently, hindering economic growth — which, in turn, adversely impacts tax collections based on corporate and personal income. (When incomes are falling, so are tax revenues.) See how this vicious circle works?

    So, there’s more to this story than the raw numbers. Not only have Bush’s tax cuts resulted in falling revenue, but his deficit spending policies are producing the worst kind of revenue growth, namely, temporary revenue growth that we will pay for with future high interest rates, high unemployment, and high inflation.

The plane ran out of runway before getting airborne and crashed about a mile away. The fuselage was intact but engulfed by fire when rescuers arrived. Anyone who thinks the Bush administration should be trusted to conduct surveillance of “suspected terrorists” without judicial oversight should read this story.

    Synopsis: Environmental activist attends public hearing by Army Corps of Engineers on fish movement around a dam. Corps presenters offer various options, including blowing up the dam (complete with graphic of a dam being dynamited). Activist suggests, instead of building a fish channel around the dam, why not remove it? Next thing he knows, he’s being investigated by the FBI as a potential terrorist plotting to — you guessed it — blow up the dam.

    From today’s Seattle Times:

    “Idea to remove dam triggers probe by FBI
    “By JIM SUHR
    “The Associated Press

    “ST. LOUIS — Jim Bensman thought his suggestion during a public hearing was harmless enough: Instead of building a channel so migratory fish could go around a dam on the Mississippi River, just get rid of the dam. Instead, the environmental activist found himself in hot water, drawing FBI scrutiny to see whether he had any terrorist intentions. “The case ‘shows just how easy it is to be labeled a suspected terrorist,’ he said.

    “It started July 25 in Alton, Ill., when the Army Corps of Engineers invited public discussion about options for improving fish movement at the nearby Melvin Price Locks and Dam, considered a major impediment to roughly 36 species that migrate upstream. During the 90-minute hearing …, Bensman … contended that dams are environmentally destructive and amount to … corporate welfare for boating interests. He urged that the dam be removed. He … never mentioned blowing up the dam, though the corps’ presentation of possible options included a picture of a dam being dynamited. …

    “Within days, the FBI had Bensman on the phone, asking whether he was a threat. ;To think I’m a terrorist is utterly ridiculous,; Bensman, 46, said from his home in Alton, south of St. Louis. ;How could any reasonable person think a terrorist is going to come to a public meeting held by the army corps, let them know who they are and announce their terror plot? It just doesn’t make sense to me.’

    “‘I don’t want to dispute anything with Jim at this point,’ (Corps spokesman Alan) Dooley said. ‘We’re not going to debate whether this is oversensitivity or undersensitivity.’

    “Marshall Stone, a supervisory special agent with the FBI office in Springfield, Ill., acknowledged the corps had asked his agency to review Bensman’s remarks.

    “Bensman is affiliated with the Sierra Club and the forest-protection group Heartwood, and his environmental activism is well known around the Midwest. He has railed against logging and gone to bat for bats, woodpeckers and, lately, migratory fish in the Mississippi. ‘They all know me, and I’m a thorn in their side,’ Bensman said of the Corps of Engineers.”

    Excerpts from this article are quoted here under the Fair Use Doctrine; for complete story and/or copyright info, see http://tinyurl.com/epesq

    “I don’t belong to an organized political party. I’m a Democrat.” – Will Rogers.

    Katherine Harris is campaigning as the “Christian” candidate now. Funny, I thought she was the Republican in that race. I also note that Bill Nelson (the incumbent and her opponent) lists his religion as “Protestant”. Hmmm. Last I checked, that also qualifies as “Christian”.

    People talk about bringing Christian values to their office. When they mean honesty, charity, mercy, and fair dealing with all, then this is a good thing.

    When they mean using the force of government to demand that people live their lives in accordance with their own interpretation of the Bible, then we have a problem. I’ve also noted that many of these folks seem to read their Bibles rather selectively. I’ve read mine from cover to cover, and can’t find anything that allows selective enforcement of laws, cheating on vote counts and treating large companies and wealthy individuals better than the poor or powerless.

    Additionally, the whole idea of being able to repent and have sins forgiven does not mean that you can go through life hurting people and then just say “oops, sorry” at the moment before you die. It requires real repentance, and one of the concepts in Christianity is that God really knows whether or not you’re sincere. The old “Bart Simpson” routine of “nobody saw me do it, you can’t prove it” doesn’t work.

    Of course, there’s always the possibility that the person talking about “Christian values” really doesn’t believe a word of it, but is just making the noises needed to get elected.

    “Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'” Matthew 7:22-23

    “Liberalism is the medicine you want to take if the truth hurts to much.” Commentby RUFUS Fitzgerald Kennedy— 8/27/06@ 5:15 pm

    Dufus, I’m glad you brought up the subject. Let’s take a look at what liberalism has done for the American people.

    “A Day in the Life of Joe Middle-Class Republican
    “By John Gray Cincinnati, Ohio

    “Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.

    “All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

    “Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; his bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

    “Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn’t think he should loose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

    “Its noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression.

    “Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time.

    “Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republican’s would still be sitting in the dark)

    “He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home.

    “He turns on a radio talk show, the host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn’t tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.) Joe agrees, ‘We don’t need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I’m a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.'”

    Now let’s take a look at some of the liberal ideas that right wingers consider “dangerous”:

    “The American Liberal Creed

    “Liberals recognize the value and rights of all people;
    “Liberals recognize that we share the world with others;
    “Liberals support the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights
    and champion their equal application to all citizens;
    Liberals champion knowledge above ignorance, learning above dogma;
    “Liberals recognize that the concept of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is futile without education, healthcare and employment;
    “Liberals recognize that government of the people, by the people, and for the people is for the service and protection of all, regardless of economic status;
    “Liberals recognize that public works and institutions serve the public interest, and taxes support those works and institutions;
    “Liberals recognize that ‘every person for themselves’ leads not to a diverse, enlightened and viable society, but only to jungle-like ‘survival of the fittest’;
    “Liberals recognize that an individual, not government, controls their own body;
    “Liberals recognize that neither government nor commerce is suitable to meet all of our nation’s challenges, that there is a place for both;
    “Liberals propagate this message, defend it, and vote for and support those who do.

    OMIGOD!!! THE LIBERALS ARE COMING!!!

    “And their wives are bitches. And their kids probably sell drugs on street corners for spending cash. They are ineffectual and ambulance chasers and they hate America. They have a subversive plot to destroy the country because … ok, I can never quite figure that one out, but dammit, I know they must be really really BAD people who are out to destroy American families. They have BAD values. I am not real clear what those BAD VALUES are, but I know they have them. They are BAD.

    “And I know that because my Republican leadership tells me so. They HAVE to be really REALLY AWFUL so that my Republican leaders can make George W. Bush and Dick Cheney look good by comparison. Since my Republican leaders will not tell me why I should vote for Bush or Cheney, just why I shouldn’t vote for Kerry/Edwards, I have to go on the theory that Kerry and Edwards are actually the reincarnation of evil divided into two bodies to fool the American public. And I also know that anybody that supports them is LIBERAL!! HOLY JESUS!! RUN!! RUN AWAY (or shoot them. Maybe we should just shoot all the liberals)!!! THE LIBERALS ARE COMING!! And we all know that LIBERALS are all out to destroy American families, too. And why do they want to destroy American families?? Because they have BAD VALUES!! I know this because the word LIBERAL means something horrible and evil and BAD. And…you guessed it…I know this because my Republican leadership told me so.

    “Do you know what those horrible, stinking LIBERALS want to do??? They want to make it so that anybody that works hard can afford a higher education. Bastards. They want to insure that the only reason we go to war and kill a thousand of the bravest people in our country is because we have PROOF that the country we are attacking is a clear and present danger. Pussies. Don’t they know that its good enough to really strongly suspect that there might be a danger?? Hey, isn’t that what a pre-emptive strike is all about?? Stinking LIBERALS want to make sure that their children are not left with trillions of dollars of budget deficit to pay off. HA! Don’t they know it is far more important that we live well RIGHT NOW than that our children live well?? And stinking LIBERALS think that the measure of a society is not how well the highest of its members live, but how well the lowest of its members live. Assholes.

    “Now, I can’t really tell you anything factual that illustrates why George Bush would be a better choice than John Kerry. Oh, and I in no way believe any of the repeated stories about conflict of interest or ethical misconduct that are reported. That is just the LIBERAL media with their political agenda talking. I get my news from politically neutral sources like FOX and CNN. They NEVER slant a story or report with any kind of bias, so I know that I can trust Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity and all those guys.

    “But I don’t have to have any facts or proof of why George Bush is the best choice for President. Because GOD HIMSELF personally has chosen George Bush to lead this country. My minister told me so right after the local GOP organizer called and asked for our congregational directory. That was when my minister said that Bush would never do anything ethically questionable, so I know that he must be both chosen by god and ethically sound.”

    What really happened, of course, is that petty and mean-spirited bureaucrats retaliated against an activist who had been a thorn in their side by reporting him to the FBI as a suspected terrorist.

    That’s about the same thing as an unruly student retaliating against a teacher for sending him to the principle’s office by accusing the teacher of child molesting.

    Those bureaucrats deserve to lose their jobs. Their agency deserves to be sued for monetary damages. Their boss should be demoted and transferred to Mississippi, and their building should be razed and turned into a parking lot.

They want to take out both Syria and Iran. Israel probably doesn’t give a rat’s ass about Syria, but desparately wanted to pull Hisbullah’s teeth. If that opened the way for a war with Iran, then they could suck us in.

    IT’S THE ECONOMY, STOOPID!!!

    A New York Times article today confirms what I’ve said all along: Workers are getting screwed under the Bush Economy. According to the article, most Americans are worse off despite rising productivity, while the share of economic output going to profits and people at the top soars to all-time highs.

    Welcome to the Wingnut Economy.

    “The median hourly wage for American workers has declined … after factoring in inflation. The drop has been especially notable … because productivity … has risen steadily(;) … wages and salaries now make up the lowest share of the nation’s gross domestic product since the government began recording the data in 1947, while corporate profits have climbed to their highest share since the 1960’s ….”

    According to the article, academic and non-partisan political analysts expect political repercussions, while Bush administration officials and GOP politicos pooh-pooh that possibility and try to shift blame.

    “(T)he Federal Reserve chairman … warned that the unequal distribution of the economy’s spoils could derail the trade liberalization of recent decades. … ‘It’s a dangerous time for any party to have control … ,’ said Charles Cook, who publishes a nonpartisan political newsletter.”

    Economists attribute the wage stagnation to global trade, immigration, layoffs, technology, higher spending by companies on health benefits, and weaker trade unions — all of which erode workers’ bargaining power:

    “Together, these forces have caused a growing share of the economy to go to companies instead of workers’ paychecks. … Total employee compensation … has not been so low since 1966 … economists at Goldman Sachs wrote, ‘The most important contributor to higher profit margins over the past five years has been a decline in labor’s share of national income.’ … Worker productivity rose 16.6 percent from 2000 to 2005, while total compensation for the median worker rose 7.2 percent, according to Labor Department statistics …. ‘If I had to sum it up,’ said Jared Bernstein, a senior economist …, ‘it comes down to bargaining power and the lack of ability of many in the work force to claim their fair share of growth.’ … Even for workers at the 90th percentile of earners — making about $80,000 a year — inflation has outpaced their pay increases over the last three years, according to the Labor Department.

    “’There are two economies out there,’ Mr. Cook, the political analyst, said. … In 2004, the top 1 percent of earners — a group that includes many chief executives — received 11.2 percent of all wage income, up from 8.7 percent a decade earlier and less than 6 percent three decades ago, according to … economists who analyzed the tax data.”

    Other reporting has described the Corps of Engineers Powerpoint presentation as including a photograph of a dam being dynamited, as well as the Corps attitude that destruction was not their preferred option.

    There has been a great deal of discussion about removing dams in Washington, and that would, not doubt, involve the use of explosive charges. It’s OK to oppose removing the dams, but not to accuse the proponents of being terrorists for favoring it.

    ===========

    Let’s condsider the concept of “critical field length” and “critical engine failure speed.” Critical field length is the length of runway required for an aircraft to accelerate on two engines, experieince an engine failure and either continue the takeoff or abort the takeoff IN THE SAME DISTANCE.

    Critical field length is adversely affected by high ambient temperature and high pressure altitutdes. For example, it’s “easier” for an aircraft to take off from Boeing Field at 95 degrees than from Denver with the temp at 95 degrees. The reason is that Denver is about a mile ABOVE sea level, and Boeing Field is pretty much AT sea level (i.e., lower pressure altitude).

    I’m assuming that there was no engine failure on the takeoff for this commuter jet, so we’ll just concnetrate on critical field length. This airplane was taking-off on a runway that was woefully short of the required critical field length. After reaching only a moderate sped ontakeoff roll, it didn’t have enough runway to stop in an emergency. The pilots no doubt panicked at the end of this small runway and forced the aircraft into the air before it was ready to fly. Now, if you’ve ever flown an aircraft, you know about ground effect. That is when the wingtip vortices generated on rotation produce what amounts to a lifting action on the aircraft as it rotates to get airborne. The trouble is, this ground effect goes away pretty quickly, and ineveitably the aircraft settles back to the ground. In this case, that “settling” took place ina corn field as the plane stalled.

    It was physically impossible for this aircraft to take-off on Runway 08-26. The pilots, I believe, were confused as to where they were on the aerodrome. They thought they were taking off on Runwya 04-22 (over 7,000 feet), but they were actually on Runway 08-26 (3,400 feet). the confusion resulted in the disaster.

    As for the demise of PATCO during the Reagan era, this had nothing to do with the crash. Poor visibility (haze) obscured the control tower personnels’ view of the airfield. I flew airplanes for many years after the union went kaput, and the air traffic control was as good or better after PATCO’s end than before it went belly-up.

    In short, LeftTurn, you can’t blame the crash on unions, scabs, George W. or anyone else other than the two guys operating the aircraft.

    There’s little doubt that Iran has pockets deep enough to rebuild Lebanon. Having a sharp pointed end sticking in Israel’s throat is also a strong incentive for them to do so. Israel has a lot to make up for after this fight, and may have permanently wed Lebanon, Druze, Maronites, and Orthodox included, to Hisbollah. When you level a country to get a handfull of terrorists, and use cluster bombs to do so, you reduce the non-combatants down to the status of cockroaches. No wonder we are condemned to see the re-ennactment of the myth of Cadmon. . .everywhere we cast the teeth and drops of blood from the monster we seek to slay, armed men spring up anew. . . .

    Daddy Love: Maybe you agree with this?

    “When you walk in the streets of Gaza City, you cannot but close your eyes because of what you see there: unimaginable chaos, careless policemen, young men carrying guns and strutting with pride and families receiving condolences for their dead in the middle of the street.”

    This is how Ghazi Hamad, spokesman for the Hamas-controlled Palestinian Authority government and a former newspaper editor, described the situation in the Gaza Strip in an article he published on Sunday on some Palestinian news Web sites.

    The article, the first of its kind by a senior Hamas official, also questioned the effectiveness of the Kassam rocket attacks and noted that since Israel evacuated the Gaza Strip, the situation there has deteriorated on all levels. It holds the armed groups responsible for the crisis and calls on them to reconsider their tactics and to stop blaming Israel for their mistakes.

    “Gaza is suffering under the yoke of anarchy and the swords of thugs,” Hamad wrote. “I remember the day when Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip and closed the gates behind. Then, Palestinians across the political spectrum took to the streets to celebrate what many of us regarded as the Israeli defeat or retreat. We heard a lot about a promising future in the Gaza Strip and about turning the area into a trade and industrial zone.”

    Hamad said the “culture of life” that prevailed in the Strip has since been replaced with a nightmare. “Life became a nightmare and an intolerable burden,” he said. “Today I ask myself a daring and frightening question: ‘Why did the occupation return to Gaza?’ The normal reply: ‘The occupation is the reason.'”

    Dismissing Israel’s responsibility for the growing state of anarchy and lawlessness in the Gaza Strip, Hamad said it was time for the Palestinians to embark on a soul-searching process to see where they erred.

    “We’re always afraid to talk about our mistakes,” he added. “We’re used to blaming our mistakes on others. What is the relationship between the chaos, anarchy, lawlessness, indiscriminate murders, theft of land, family rivalries, transgression on public lands and unorganized traffic and the occupation? We are still trapped by the mentality of conspiracy theories – one that has limited our capability to think.”

    Hamad admitted that the Palestinians have failed in developing the Gaza Strip following the Israeli withdrawal and in imposing law and order. He said about 500 Palestinians have been killed and 3,000 wounded since the Israeli pullout, in addition to the destruction of much of the infrastructure in the area.

    By comparison, he said, only three or four Israelis have been killed by the rockets fired from the Gaza Strip over the same period.

    “Some will argue that it’s not a matter of profit or loss, but that this has an accumulating effect” he said. “This may be true. But isn’t there a possibility of decreasing the number of casualties and increasing our gains by using our brains and making the proper calculations away from demagogic statements?”

    The Hamas official said that while his government was unable to change the situation, the opposition was sitting on the side and watching and PA President Mahmoud Abbas was as weak as ever.

    “We have all been attacked by the bacteria of stupidity,” he remarked. “We have lost our sense of direction and we don’t know where we’re headed.”

    Addressing the various armed groups in the Gaza Strip, Hamad concluded: “Please have mercy on Gaza. Have mercy on us from your demagogy, chaos, guns, thugs, infighting. Let Gaza breathe a bit. Let it live.”

    Idea to remove dam triggers probe by FBI

    By JIM SUHR

    The Associated Press

    PREV of NEXT

    TOM GANNAM / AP

    Jim Bensman has been investigated by the FBI after remarks he made at a public meeting about removing a dam were construed to have terrorist undertones.

    ST.

    The case “shows just how easy it is to be labeled a suspected terrorist,” he said.

    It started July 25 in Alton, Ill., when the Army Corps of Engineers invited public discussion about options for improving fish movement at the nearby Melvin Price Locks and Dam, considered a major impediment to roughly 36 species that migrate upstream.

    152

    “Do you have a source for that? Because it certainly didn’t say that in the link that was provided earlier.” Commentby Michael— 8/28/06@ 9:46 am

    Talk to your optometrist about reading glasses, Michael, because it certainly DID say that.

    “During the 90-minute hearing whose agenda included whether to build a fish channel, Bensman said, he contended that dams are environmentally destructive and amount to billions of dollars in corporate welfare for boating interests. He urged that the dam be removed. He said he never mentioned blowing up the dam, though the corps’ presentation of possible options included a picture of a dam being dynamited.”

    Now let’s quote that again, in condensed form, in case you still don’t get it:

    “During the 90-minute hearing … the corps’ presentation of possible options included a picture of a dam being dynamited.”

    Any questions?

    It’s only a matter of time before they bring back SLAPP suits. In other words, if a citizen goes to a public hearing to object to something a developer or corporation wants to do in the citizen’s neighborhood, the developer or corporation can sue the citizen and take the citizen’s home and life savings. Yep, those are exactly the types of issue you did NOT bring up when you called me a “Jewish Holocaust hater.”

    Lebanon does not “support” Hezbollah. They do very well on their own. The government of Lebanon is weak and the Army is not very capable. The truth is that they have neither the capacity to succeed nor the will to take the casualties that would follow any attempt to disarmn Hezbollah. That and the fact that many people DO support Hezbollah make them hard for teh government to do much about.

    “Now you change your tune? You stepped in it. Can’t wipe it away that quickly. BTW We think donk are wrong on many policies! ”

    Umm, what tune? My positions are consistent. Israel may have a limited “right” to defend itself but it went far beyond what international agreemtns state are acceptable behaviors in that context. They engaged in collective punishment, for example. Not that Republicans see anything wrong with that.

    Re: Iran from Juan Cole

    A Persian news agency (link in Persian) reports that President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad said, “Iran is not a threat to any country, and is not in any way a people of intimidation and aggression.” He described Iranians as people of peace and civilization. He said that Iran does not even pose a threat to Israel, and wants to deal with the problem there peacefully, through elections:

    “Weapons research is in no way part of Iran’s program. Even with regard to the Zionist regime, our path to a solution is elections.”

    Ahmadinejad seems to be explaining what his calls for the Zionist regime to be effaced actually mean. He says he doesn’t want violence against Israel, despite its own acts of enmity against Middle Eastern neighbors. I [that is, Juan Cole]interpret his statement on Saturday to be an endorsement of the one-state solution, in which a government would be elected that all Palestinians and all Israelis would jointly vote for. The result would be a government about half made up of Israeli ministers and half of Palestinian ones. Whatever one wanted to call such an arrangement, it wouldn’t exactly be a “Zionist state,” which would thus have been dissolved.

    The schlock Western pundits, journalists and politicians who keep maintaining that Ahmadinejad threatened “to wipe Israel off the map” when he never said those words will never, ever manage to choke out the words Ahmadinejad spoke on Saturday, much less repeat them as a tag line forever after.

  181. Daddy Love spews:

    Monday, 8/28/06 at 3:09 pm

    BTW, if you are intersted in what Ahmadinejad actually said about Israel, far from the popularly-reported “wipe Israel off the map,” what Ahmadinejad really did was recall the Ayatollah Khomeini’s words about the Soviet Union in saying, “This occupation regime over Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time.” Ahmadinejad compared his hope for an end to any Zionist regime in geographical Palestine to Khomeini’s prediction that the Soviet Union would one day vanish. It wasn’t a hope to kill Soviet citizens, but a desire for regime change.

    Trash the ‘Compact’
    An attempt to circumvent the Electoral College is really an urban power grab.

    BY PETE DU PONT
    Monday, August 28, 2006 12:01 a.m. EDT

    For more than 200 years America has chosen its presidents as the Constitution provides: through the Electoral College. Traditionally, each state has cast its electoral votes–equal to its total representation in Congress–for the candidate who receives the most votes statewide.

    But last week the California Senate passed legislation to award the state’s Electoral College votes to the candidate who has received the most popular votes nationally–whether Californians chose him or not. A similar bill passed the Assembly on May 30, so it will soon be up to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign or veto the bill. Such a bill also passed the Colorado Senate in April, part of a national to change the way we choose our presidents. The mandate doesn’t take effect until enough other states sign on to provide a majority of electoral votes. If it were in effect in 2004, George W. Bush would have taken California’s 55 electoral votes, even though John Kerry carried the state by a margin of nearly 10%.

    It is an odd idea, an “interstate compact” switching the Electoral College votes of member states from their state’s vote winner to the national vote winner. And the direct election of presidents would be a political, electoral, and constitutional mistake that would radically change America’s election system.

    First, the direct election of presidents would lead to geographically narrower campaigns, for election efforts would be largely urban. In 2000 Al Gore won 677 counties and George Bush 2,434, but Mr. Gore received more total votes. Circumvent the Electoral College and move to a direct national vote, and those 677 largely urban counties would become the focus of presidential campaigns.
    Rural states like Maine, with its 740,000 votes in 2004, wouldn’t matter much compared with New York’s 7.4 million or California’s 12.4 million votes. Rural states’ issues wouldn’t matter much either; big-city populations and urban issues would become the focus of presidential campaigns. America would be holding urban elections, and that would change the character of campaigns and presidents.

    Second, in any direct national election there would be significant election-fraud concerns. In the 2000 Bush-Gore race, Mr. Gore’s 540,000-vote margin amounted to 3.1 votes in each of the country’s 175,000 precincts. “Finding” three votes per precinct in urban areas is not a difficult thing, or as former presidential scholar and Kennedy advisor Theodore White testified before the Congress in 1970, “There is an almost unprecedented chaos that comes in the system where the change of one or two votes per precinct can switch the national election of the United States.”

    Washington state’s 2004 governor’s race was decided by just 129 votes. A judge found 1,678 illegal votes were cast, and it turned out that 1,200 more votes were counted in Seattle’s King County than the number of people recorded as voting. This affected just Washington state, but in a direct national election where everything hangs on a small number of urban districts, such manipulations could easily decide presidencies.

    Third, direct election would lead to a multicandidate, multiparty system instead of the two-party system we have. Many candidates would run on narrow issues: anti-immigration, pro-gun, environment, national security, antiwar, socialist or labor candidates, for they would have a microphone for their issues. Then there would be political power seekers–Al Sharpton or Michael Moore–and Hollywood pols like Barbra Streisand or Warren Beatty. Even Paris Hilton could advance her career through a presidential campaign.

    For such candidates to run under the present system is very difficult, for they have to win state by state electoral votes. But if all you need is national fame and fortune to win popular votes, many candidates would run and presidential campaigns would become unfocused, confused, and about political advocacy instead of presidential substance.

    Finally, direct election would also lead to weaker presidents. There are no run-offs in the Interstate Compact–that would require either a constitutional amendment or the agreement of all 50 states and the District of Columbia–so the highest percentage winner, no matter how small (perhaps 25% or 30% in a six- or eight-candidate field) would become president. Such a winner would not have an Electoral College majority and therefore not be seen as a legitimate president.

    So rather that trying to eviscerate the Electoral College, we should be embracing it. It was put in the Constitution to allow states to choose presidents, for we are a republic based on the separation of powers, not a direct democracy. And the Electoral College–just like the Senate–was intended to protect the residents of small states. As James Madison said, the Electoral College included the will of the nation–every congressional district gets an electoral vote–and “the will of the states in their distinct and independent capacities” since every state gets two additional electors.

    And might not the direct-election Interstate Compact lead to other similar efforts? California’s Sen. Dianne Feinstein says the Electoral College violates “one person, one vote,” and so we should have direct election of the president. But the equal allocation of two senators to each state also violates “one person, one vote.” Montana, with 900,000 people, gets two senators and so does California with 34 million, so Feinstein’s logic would say that California should have 12 senators, and Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont should share just one among them.
    Might not “one person, one vote” allow a national vote to amend the Constitution instead of requiring approval by three-quarters of the states? To restrict freedom of speech, or expand searches and seizures, or modify any of the Bill of Rights?

    One wonders if the direct election of presidents is really the beginning of an effort to bring national government under the control of large and liberal states. Common Cause, a Washington-based lobbying group that describes itself as “promoting open, honest and accountable government,” argues “how neatly it fits with American tradition.” But it doesn’t. It contradicts our constitutional republic’s state and federal government sharing of powers. Choosing presidents is one of our states’ powers, and we should not remove it to begin a centralized national American government.
