George Carlin, comedian, actor and hero of First Amendment advocates (and English language enthusiasts) everywhere, died yesterday at age 71.

George Carlin was an early master of “observational humor”, the ability to look at life and society with child-like eyes, and see the inherent humor and irony in much of what we do. He influenced many scores of commedians who followed him – much of today’s stand-up comedy routines use his style (some well, others not so successfully).
It’s kind of a shame that his obits focus on the “seven dirty words”, when he had do much more he offered. My favorite was the comparison of football and baseball. Even though I’ve never cared that much for baseball, and have always been a football fan, it’s a hilarious routine.

I think Richard Pryor and George Carlin were the two funniest guys of the past 200 years!
That it unfortunate. He was a fun guy.
Yeah, I saw that in the morning paper. Carlin was one of the people who made me want to examen the world around me and question why things are the way they are, not just accept them.
He will be missed. And I was kind of planning on trying to catch him in Vegas this year. Damn!
Gordon @ 5: I thought I heard something on the radio on Friday that he was going to be the guest of honor at some “tribute” celebration, but I wasn’t paying that much attention, so I don’t know the details (and I might have gotten it wrong entirely).
I enjoyed the Hippy-Dippy Weatherman schtick.
I’m sure Goldy & Rog will miss the guy that provided them with 1/2 of their entire vocabulary!

6 He was to be honored with the 11th Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at a Kennedy Center fete. Presumably that program will go on as planned, with the award given posthumously (or should I say, “posthumorously”?)
