    In today’s pipe bomb news,

A 54-year-old Everett man was arrested on suspicion of a hate crime after police say he blew up his friend’s neighbor’s car using a pipe bomb in December and called the woman an anti-Black slur. The Everett man, who is white, was arrested Monday on suspicion of second-degree arson, malicious mischief, possessing an explosive device, using an explosive without a license and hate crime. He was previously reported to police for calling the victim, who is Black, a racist slur and was arrested in 2020 after he pointed a gun at Black Lives Matter protesters.

But reaction here to Trump’s crackdown has been far more muted than during his first term, reflecting both the rightward shift of Latino voters and a belief among some that restrictive border measures are necessary.

“I understand some people feel a little bit betrayed because most of us voted him in,” said Frank Ayllon, a 41-year-old sales representative from Miami. “I feel like a lot of these people are taking it very personal. The people most worried about possible cuts to SNAP subsidies are in the top floor of the offices at Coca-Cola.

An astounding 20 percent of the $113 billion annual SNAP budget — $23 billion annually — is used to pay for unhealthy foods and beverages purchased by SNAP participants.
    …
In its current form, SNAP operates as a de facto subsidy program that props up some of the unhealthiest parts of the food industry. Take, for example, the most frequently purchased item in SNAP — sugar-sweetened beverages, which comprise 9.3 percent of all SNAP expenditures. This part of the SNAP subsidy, by our estimates, drives 20 to 25 percent of U.S. revenues for Coca-Cola and Pepsico.

Besides providing no nutritional value, the regular consumption of sugary drinks produces health outcomes similar to alcohol, including liver disease, obesity, high blood pressure and other cardiometabolic diseases.

Say, guess who’s bankrolling the opposition to potential SNAP cuts?

Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky, who heads the budget committee, said the council will need to look at the possibility of asking unions representing city workers to defer the scheduled raises or make other concessions.

Maine’s Democrat governor is the latest to confirm that yes, the November election results were a mandate:

Maine Universities Back Down To Trump, Will Ban Trans Athletes From Women’s Sports

Universities in Maine have caved to pressure from the Trump administration on the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports.

Maine, with the support of Democrat Governor Janet Mills, had been defying an executive order issued by President Donald Trump to prevent males from competing against females in athletic competitions.

And then the governor caved, explicitly naming DJT47 as the reason:

“The University of Maine System (UMaine) has clearly communicated its compliance with Title IX’s requirement to protect equal opportunities for women and girls to compete in safe and fair sports, as articulated in President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order,” the statement says. “Any false claim by the UMaine can, and will, result in onerous and even potentially criminal financial liability.”

By the way, if you look into it, some states don’t allow soda pop purchases with SNAP benefits. Guess which states don’t restrict unhealthy eating? Guess which states have the highest obesity rates? Guess which states have the highest concentration of Trump voters?

Do you still need to wonder why Trump doesn’t restrict purchase of soda pop with SNAP benefits? I suppose because his solution is to do away with SNAP benefits altogether and let his own voters starve.

Everett Transit dumping several electric buses from a company that tried to be the Tesla of the transit bus industry. The difference was, existing builders quickly adapted with battery offerings of existing designs. In the interim, ET is going with reconditioned Diesels as they transition to a half hybrid, half battery fleet. Everett Transit might have been the last operator of Proterra’s in Western Washington, as Metro and Pierce Transit have already retired their Proterra buses not long after the bankruptcy and parts became harder to find. The fleet wasn’t big enough for Metro to do their traditional method of sourcing parts for buses not longer being manufactured .

Bus manufacturers do come and go. Just looking at the roster of what Metro inherited, GMC no longer building transit buses, Flixible is gone.(Same with Twin Coach).

Metro is giving Solaris of Poland a try. Their main offering, the Urbino Electric, has been in production for 12 years now, which is the minimum amount of years Metro would have to use them if using Federal Funds(ET and Metro exceed that) As for the company Everett Transiit’s reliable Electrics come from, they have been in the Transit business for 50, made school buses before that, and started out building horse drawn vehicles.

Remember how much Boxcheck Momala loved electric school buses?

Emblematic of her failure, those buses.

The $200 Billion Electric School Bus Bust
“I love electric school buses!” – Kamala Harris

Electric bus enthusiasts like Kamala Harris will tell you that spending an extra $150 billion or so is worth the price to theoretically save children from diesel exhaust (despite the major improvements in diesel technology and much cleaner diesel fuel mandated in recent years). But they are silent about the number of actual lives lost by children mining the raw materials for electric vehicle batteries.

Using data supplied by Pacific Gas & Electric, Colorado journalist Cory Gaines noted that the $260,000 cost differential between diesel and electric school buses means that any school district wanting to take advantage of the predicted much lower operating costs will need major help with the huge upfront capital costs. Which means both federal and state subsidies – and higher taxes to pay for the subsidies.

Noting that electric buses have longer downtimes and higher towing costs, plus require (again upfront) costs for installing and maintaining charging stations – and other hidden costs, the payback on the electric school bus (at an average of 16,000 miles per year, a high-end estimate) comes out to about 20 years – longer than the lifespan of the bus. And that’s if nobody dies or is injured by a school bus fire.

From the Cato Institute, a rightwing think tank:

Even President Trump said that Medicaid won’t be touched. But without the cuts, Congress could not continue with the Trump tax cuts enacted in 2017. …

Immigrants generally pay more in taxes than they consume in benefits, partly because they consume less welfare than native-born Americans. Kicking all non-citizens off welfare would boost those fiscal benefits even higher by reducing the outlays.

    https://thehill.com/opinion/congress-blog/5208050-medicaid-reform-cuts/

In other words, we’re already taking advantage of non-citizens, so let’s take even more advantage of them to fund billionaire tax cuts. Typical conservative morality.

But morality aside, even on pragmatic terms, it doesn’t make sense. America’s food supply is heavily dependent on non-citizen labor. Farmworkers don’t have employer-paid health care. If you kick them off Medicaid — which they’re paying taxes for — you’ll have a less healthy and less efficient farm labor force, less food production, and higher food prices.

President Trump instructed the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday to sanction attorneys and law firms if they engage in “frivolous, unreasonable and vexatious” litigation against the U.S. government.

That’s actually the courts’ job. Judges, not the executive branch, impose Rule 11 sanctions.

“Lawyers and law firms that engage in actions that violate the laws of the United States or rules governing attorney conduct must be efficiently and effectively held accountable,” Trump said in a memo released by the White House.

That’s actually the bar association and state supreme courts’ job. They, not the executive branch, enforce lawyer discipline.

    https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5208866-donald-trump-justice-department-law-firms-government-litigation/

The larger issue here is that at the present time, frivolous arguments aren’t coming from those challenging Trump’s executive (and ultra vires) actions, they’re coming from the government lawyers defending his actions.

There is no “nationwide” bar in the US. Admission to practice complies with our federal system and is controlled state-by-state. Many states have practice reciprocity agreements avoiding the necessity to take multiple state bar exams. Practice before the federal courts is on a district-by-district basis with each district setting it’s own rules, but generally allowing all attorneys admitted in good standing in that state to practice and appear.

You have to believe in that part if you are going to believe in and defend the entire legal system. Jeffrey Dahmer deserves a good lawyer. It should not be about who they represent. It’s supposed to be about how they do it.

Looking at the website for the restored MEHVA, finally updated the roster. The old site hadn’t been updated since the third generation of trolleybuses gave way to the fourth. There have been a few more retirements on the Diesel side since then. Looks like the first hybrid has joined the vintage fleet. About time, the entire first batch of DE60LFs, the 2600s have been retired, and second batch 6800s, days are numbered. Only about 5 of them show up every day on the Pantograph Pro tracker, and the majority of them are Sound Transit buses(assigned to and operated by Metro, originally for soon to be discontinued rt550).

    https://mehva.org/fleet

Also, they got status reports for what is available for tours/charters. Figured that t none of the Trolleys would be operable, the excursions were usually on weekends, and Construction companies can veto those dates.(It’s like call before you dig, but the construction company has to put up a deposit, to pay for the linemen’s time turning off the overhead wire. It’s not done from a central center, nor should it).

Seattle Municipal Railway 210 and 1705 are definitely out of service. 210 was a 1918 Birney, last I heard it was just the frame, needs a total reconstruction, and since nowhere to run it, 1705, a Kenworth,I have seen pictures of it in storage, it had a long career with Seattle Transit, even after revenue service was finished. Its final use was as a Vault Bus. Something a relatively new, Public Transportation Benefit Area Authority made up of two islands that doesn’t charge fares for fixed routes never needed. The vault bus was used to empty fareboxes.

The Proterra buses, will never be in the MEHVA Fleet, although the volunteers have been creative in the past. Like Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle 3152. For ease of maintenance, it had a few engine changes after retirement, and had to be put back in revenue service each time for a short period of time. 3152 was actually part of an experiment when Metro bought it as a test of a potential replacement for diesel, Methanol. Before 1990, it had been converted to Diesel.

alright here’s a Take: checks and balances (and federalism) were supposed to protect against tyranny.
But instead they just prevented a “tyranny of the majority” from doing universal health care and gun control, and it turns out they do basically nothing to stop an autocrat

Attorney General Pam Bondi once again attacked members of the judiciary in a Fox News interview Sunday … and saying the Supreme Court will ultimately hear the court battle over the administration’s use of the Alien Enemies Act.

“The Supreme Court will get involved,” Bondi said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.” “This is an out of control judge, a federal judge, trying to control our entire foreign policy ….”

    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/justice-department/attorney-general-supreme-court-involved-alien-enemies-act-case-rcna197682

Deporting an asylum seeker because of his tattoo, without any evidence of criminal activity, isn’t foreign policy; but yeah, go ahead and litigate in the courts whether federal judges have jurisdiction over deportations, that’s preferable to defying their orders.

And I’ll accept even a political decision by a partisan Supreme Court, because at least that pretends to still be governed by rule of law, in appearance if not substance, which is better than nothing.

Republicans have … made government cost-cutting a centerpiece of the second Trump administration.

    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/sen-john-curtis-politicians-not-honest-wont-touch-social-security-rcna197659

I don’t recall any Republican candidates talking about that, but all it took to get there was one election in which dishonest Republicans didn’t tell voters they were really electing Elon Musk and voting for cuts to Medicaid, food stamps, school lunches, weather reports, park rangers, special education, medical research, and answering the phones at Social Security with benefit cuts coming.

Officials at the Internal Revenue Service and Treasury Department are anticipating tax revenue to drop more than 10% by April 15 compared with last year, the Washington Post reported Saturday, citing three people with knowledge of the situation.

The loss of tax receipts is expected as more individuals and businesses don’t file taxes or attempt to avoid paying balances owed to the IRS. The amount of lost federal revenue could top $500 billion, the paper said.

Officials said the prediction is directly linked to shifting taxpayer behavior and President Donald Trump’s cuts at the IRS, the Washington Post said.

The $500 billion the government will lose as a result of Republicans encouraging tax cheating and nonpayment of tax debts is more than the entire ~$336 billion federal civilian payroll.

DOGE isn’t about streamlining government, making it more efficient, or saving taxpayer money. It’s about drowning government in the bathtub so oligarchs can do whatever the hell they want.
