@3 Yeah, it’s just kabuki theater.

Though not a filibuster in the technical sense—his remarks were not tied to a specific vote—Booker’s address ground the Senate to a halt. More significantly, his speech became an unexpected rallying cry for Democrats seeking to reinvigorate opposition to the President’s policies ahead of the next election cycle. Hundreds of thousands of viewers tuned in online to watch Booker’s historic stand.

In Wisconsin, local media report that some polling locations in Milwaukee County ran out of ballots due to “unprecedented turnout.” Given that Trump got less than 30% of the vote there last November, I’ll venture a wild guess that this isn’t Republican turnout.

In early results, even before any Milwaukee County precincts have reported, the election appears to be moving safely out of reach of Elon Musk’s candidate. The good-gal incumbent schools superintendent also has a healthy lead.

I won’t get into the WI judicial race vote tally.

But the early results on the Voter ID issue have it passing with a > 70% approval so far.

Democrats are about to find out that Voter ID is very popular..

    Moreover, so will the GOP.

[Update: I’ll leave this here but I likely spoke too soon. What might be a little clearer is that about 10% of voters supporting the Democrat for the Court also want Voter ID – looks like a 6% difference so far].

@15 Voter ID is already the law in Wisconsin, dumbfuck. This vote merely puts into the state constitution the voting procedures the state has had for years.

And because photo ID is already the law in Wisconsin elections, we can say with confidence that it totally failed to prevent a massive rejection of the Elon Musk candidate in that state’s pivotal supreme court election. It’s also failing to prevent the defeat of Wisconsin’s school-voucher candidate in the superintendent of instruction race.

And because photo ID has been the law for years in Wisconsin elections, I guess tonight’s results are evidence of sorts that illegals haven’t been swinging Wisconsin elections, huh?

Elon played video games while “Western Civilization” burns:

On Sunday night, Elon Musk ― the world’s richest man, one of America’s largest defense contractors and a top political and policy adviser to the president of the United States ― took time out of his busy schedule of posting on X (the social media site he owns), playing video games and leading a team purportedly dedicated to government efficiency to fly to Green Bay, Wisconsin, and campaign for a state Supreme Court race.

And he had a very good reason. “This Wisconsin Supreme Court race might decide the future of America and Western Civilization,” Musk wrote on X shortly before appearing at a town hall in Green Bay. “It’s a big deal.”

The race has been called for Susan Crawford.

Yes, the GOPers did keep their two House seats in Florida, but by half the margin they had last November, which is not a good sign for Republicans who must run in swing districts in the midterms, and the Great Tariff Inflation hasn’t even kicked in yet and for now most seniors are still getting their Social Security checks.

Meanwhile, the GOP’s two Florida survivals don’t seem likely to help them very much in any practical sense:

House Republican leaders on Tuesday canceled votes for the rest of the week after a band of GOP lawmakers staged a rebellion on the floor, bringing legislative action to a screeching halt.

Nine Republicans joined Democrats in torpedoing a procedural rule that would have blocked Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) from forcing action on the proxy voting measure. It was a hardball play by Johnson and GOP leaders that ended up backfiring.

@42 Back in my pollworker days, a supporter of a Republican candidate drove up, lined the sidewalk into the polling place where I was working with yard signs, in violation of state law, and drove off. The polling place supervisor waited until he left, then pulled them all up and deposited them in the dumpster. This was not vandalism, it was enforcing the law.

Instead of taking the law into his own hands, the professor should have reported the College Republicans to the polling place supervisor, who should have ordered them to leave, and called the cops if they didn’t comply. That wouldn’t have been fruitless; the sheriff there is a Democrat.

Why resort to vigilantism, when you don’t have to? Let the rule of law work the way it’s supposed to.

New today Mallory McMorrow is challenging Gary Peters in Michigan. Who dat? She’s this person:

    https://youtu.be/iLWo8B1R0MY

I’m not going to lie, I love this woman. She’s the real deal. But I also don’t have a problem with Gary Peters.

I do however believe that this is the right time for this. I don’t vote in Michigan, so it’s none of my business which Democrat represents them in the Senate. But I think a lesson we need to learn from 2024 is to stop being afraid of primary elections. With Biden staying in until the end of July, I’m not sure there was any other option that year. But the elevation of Vice President Harris without a contest came at a substantial cost in voter engagement and turnout.

In times like these, and facing a fascist onslaught attacking all our institutions, it’s tempting to want to play it safe. But I think Democratic primaries can help elevate issues that matter to voters. Remember that much of the rise of MAGA came about as a result of primary challenges to moderate, mainstream Republicans. Democratic party leaders, funders, and organizers should embrace competitive party primaries as a way to engage with unaligned, disengaged voters.

Tesla Q1 deliveries missed their target by over 15%.

That’s quite an achievement for TeslaTakedown in only the last couple of weeks in the quarter.

Now with rising unemployment, collapsing consumer confidence, and the movement gaining momentum I think we can make the Q2 results miss by at least 25%.

That should be enough, if it can be sustained, to produce the financial death spiral for Tesla and Elmo that America needs to help save our democracy.

Rivian reported a sharp decline in first-quarter deliveries on Wednesday, as the electric-vehicle maker grapples with soft demand, sending its shares down more than 2.5% in premarket trading.

The company delivered 8,640 vehicles in the quarter ended March 31, compared with 13,588 a year ago.

    That’s a 36.5% decline for Rivian.
