A little story. In the late 90s I was studying abroad in South Africa. While at a meet and greet with students from a local university there I was talking to this average, kind of geeky white kid about my age. I think he was Afrikaner, but I am not completely sure. Anyway, somehow the subject of music came up. I asked him who his favorite artist was. Having come of age in the northwest and the Kurt Cobain alterna worldview, I expected some sort of sort reference like that. Not grudge per se but certainly something identifiable as “alternative” and “90’s”. Anyway, the kid flat out and in all seriousness said “Michael Jackson”. I was floored. I had to hold back laughter because the answer was so unexpected. But in that very moment I came to realize the world wide significance of Michael Jackson and just how parochial my thinking had been.
Michael Jackson was a phenomenon.
I think of him in sympathetic terms with respect to his later life. He apparently owned the Elephant man’s bones. And I just recently re watched David Lynch’s Elephant Man. I think it gave me new insight into the psyche of Michael Jackson. He was widely popular but in a certain and very real sense he lived as pure object. A spectacle for the rest of the world’s often prurient projections and fantasies. I think most of us can’t possibly know what that kind of pressure and damage that can do to someone.

What don’t you get, Goldy? Why the latest pop star to kill himself with drugs got a bigger send-off to the Hereafter than Saint Ronnie? Because he was comparatively harmless, or at least less harmful — i.e., his song-and-dance routine didn’t kill anyone. He didn’t send clandestine arms to Central American nun-killers. And because burying entertainment figures is itself entertaining (to some folks, anyway). But above all because he never grew up, which appeals to the kid in us.

You could make the case that MY POST @2 was reactionary and boorish. I wouldn’t disagree with you on that, but I would say that my comments while boorish and reactionary were also true.
I would prefer to remember the musical genius rather than the process that created him, and created the sad, twisted creature he became. I would also prefer to see Joe Jackson burn in hell. And not the Joe Jackson that wrote the song that best described Jacko’s ‘marriage’ to Lisa Marie Presley:

Over at Gearslutz there are threads started by studio engineers who worked with him. It provides an interesting perspective of the man’s considerable talent and the human side of him as well. Interesting, how they take exception to the media monster that was created versus the man they actually knew, worked with and trusted.
