Open Thread 8/20

by Carl Ballard — Tuesday, 8/20/13, 8:07 am

– I don’t know enough about the Frequent Network Plan but it’s worth a look.

– 82% of Americans are correct.

– Goldy is more thrilled than me with the prospect of a State GOP Chair Pam Roach. I think she would be as problematic as before, but with a larger platform.

– Just as was the case before Roe, women’s abortion access in many states across the country is largely becoming dependent on two arbitrary things: where she lives, and how much economic privilege she has.

– Cascade Bikes is asking you to write a letter to SDOT to help complete the Missing Link.

– I think we are on solid biblical footing, in other words, to say that the current effort among House Republicans to gut SNAP is an example of the sin of Onanism. The anti-welfare rhetoric and ideology of the tea party — with its denunciations of “takers” and “moochers,” and the rallying cry of its founding in rejection of mortgage assistance for soon-to-be-homeless families — is a virulent, vicious strain of Onanism

– Anyone going to see Romeo & Juliet at the Sculpture Park? Also, in case you ever have to promote it, it is not “the greatest love story ever told.”

Onanism. Fascinating take on that bible passage. Makes sense. Again, Teabaggers and conservatives have no empathy, It’s all about them.

Only somebody who didn’t know how we met, or that my wife and I celebrated or 23rd anniversary last month would say that about R&J.
Besides, when it comes to espieglerie, my wife’s got Juliet beat all to heck. Actually, I hear Juliet was pretty much of a loss, one of those spiritual girls which are no fun. And look what happened.

Elmore Leonard is dead at 87.. I think I’ve read maybe one or two of his books but I’ve seen so many movies based on the books and inspired by his work. Quentin Tarantino, for example, is only one of many, many admirers over the years..

    Some tips for aspiring writers.

    RIP..

Could Hawaii be next to allow marriage equality? There is potential for Governor Abercrombie to call a special session. Democrats in the legislature are meeting to gauge support for the legislation. The Hawaii Legislature is the reverse of extreme Red State legislatures. The Republicans only have 7 seats in the State House, and 1 seat in the State Senate.

Interesting postscript on Hurricane Sandy. A recent conference call on disaster planning, it was asked what could be done to prevent the Hudson River tunnels from flooding again. A representative from Amtrak said that they had the ability to seal them off, but did not. The reason, was Amtrak had a choice, sral the tunnels, and let Penn Station flood. Instead, they did not close the gates, and one tunnel flooded. Vacuuming out Penn Station would have been harder.

I’m having brunch at Cafe Racer, nice to see that it’s still opern and doing well despite the bes efforts of a licenced concealed handgun carrier.

A lot of states require you to show up and take a class before issuing a CC permit, which is a good idea because that way the instructors have a chance to see if the person who wants to carry a gun is bat-shit crazy or not. I’m not against CC, but our current system in WA is stupid.

Run, Pam, run. And start the popcorn popping. Watching the WSRP impode is a pretty good show.

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Why are crazy people with guns suddenly targeting elementary schools? Someone should confiscate their guns before more kids get hurt! Having a gun should be a regulated privilege, not an unqualified right.

In the Australian Election, interesting dynamic shaping up in the Electoral Division of Bennelong, on Sydney’s North Shore. The Ethnic vote may be turning this safe Liberal seat into a marginal or swing seat. Labor has only won this seat once, in 2007, and at the time, it was held by Liberal PM John Howard. The Liberals, which are a center right party, retook it in 2010.

The sharks are going to be mighty disappointed when they discover that the the people they loaned money to have little ability to make money and nothing that the sharks can take.

The kids on the other hand can exist in a cash only economy: rent a room from a friend, work for cash, get around by public transit and bicycle.

I wonder, of those 82% who think the United States is “losing” the War On Drugs, how many would see such as an justification for employment of tactical nuclear weapons.

Worried about finances, parents opt for ‘one and done’
    http://www.cnbc.com/id/100944170

We did that. We adopted only one child and stopped. We can afford to have a decent life, and pay for college for one child, we couldn’t with two or more. We wanted two but with a stay at home parent, (that was extremely important to us) it didn’t pencil.

There was an interesting discussion around the coffee break room, about the parents who were trying to raise kids on a McDonald’s salary. My co worker’s take on it, was that the parents were irresponsible to have kids when they had so little income. I pointed out that they may have not been working at McDs when they had the kids in the first place.
I also ask them if the the parents should dump the kids to an orphanage and they seemed shocked.

P.S. Read the comments if you want to see some really racist awful stuff directed at people on welfare. Some people are vile if they think they are anonymous.

    # 12: A candidate for Kent City Councilman had a power of attorney over his mom’s finances. He got married (to his third wife)and is alleged to have taken out a reverse mortgage on the mom’s property, then taken out $200K to give to his printing business, and more to fund a round-the-world trip with his third wife, as well as some jewelry. In the meantime the money’s gone, there is no equity left, and the mom got evicted from her nursing home and is now in a nursing him which accepts only Medicare patients.

I hope he enjoyed the money, because prosecutors plan to make sure he can’t spend any money where they will send him for a few years.

@16. Good. That sound like justice. I looked up the coverage on him. A commenter describe him as “As a man of faith”. How can that be?
The position seems to be non partisan, but the 11th district republicans endorsed him. That seems to imply his political leanings.

Chattanooga, which is as conservative a southern city as any, is considering a curfew – any minor not in school and out on the streets, and not home by 11:00 on weeknights and midnight on weekends, is subject to being picked up by the police. If their parents can’t be found to pick them up, they will be transported to the juvenile detention facility. Those in charge claim that the surveyed “every other southern city” to create this plan. No mention of anywhere else.

They had a similar curfew in the suburb where I grew up. But it was a pretty “white” suburb, and you expected that only blacks would be pulled over for a possible violation – “How old are you, son? Let me see your I.D. What are you doing out past curfew? Where did you come from, who were you with, and where are you going?”

I expect a similar approach to be made to any curfew in Chattanooga. White, suburban kids will be ignored – black kids will be stopped and ultimately taken to Juvenile Hall for the night, subect to any prior investigation for what the police will presume will be prior criminal behavior.

    Bwaaahahahahahahahaha!

Online donations continued to pour into the DCCC with the committee receiving contributions over the Internet from more than 500,000 donors through July — more online donors than the DCCC had in the entirety of 2011.

Thanks to its online fundraising operation, the committee has raised big money from small donors this year. The DCCC has also capitalized on the dissatisfaction and anger that Democratic small donors and activists feel toward the House Republican majority that took power in 2011.

“Our grassroots’ energy is off the charts, and every month that they see this Republican Congress fail to get the job done, they step up even more,” said the DCCC’s chairman, Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.). “Our 2014 will be built on strong candidates, fueled by grassroots supporters and focused on exposing the wrong priorities of this Republican Congress.”
