Wednesday Open Thread

Happy filing week to all who celebrate. And hey, if your local elected officials aren’t up to snuff, there’s a good chance that they’re up for election now. You might as well run if nobody you like is stepping up.

Anyway:

  • The tough on drugs policies had the predictable results in Seattle.
  • Do you have World Cup fever?
  • Exciting things happening in and around Spokane. Street meat in street racing out.
  • That bus lane means you can get out of your car.
  • Over the weekend, I was at a fundraiser for the Pierce County YWCA. And, if you have some change, they could sure use a donation.

I had some hope this private sector effort would succeed, Although private sector initiatives also have to find private financing for the infrastructure necessary. When Brightline started, they were owned by the same company that owned Florida East Coast Railway. The route to Orlando from the Space Coast is new trackage built along the Expressway, and the planned expansion to Tampa is supposed to be built along I-4.

I don’t know if Amtrak can take it over even if they wanted to. Although the fee in 1971 was based on passenger operating losses, one of the holdouts couldn’t join because of a catch 22. It was based on prior losses before the law was passed, so it would be based on 1968/69 , and the Rock Island operated more passenger services in 69 than they did in 1970. The two remaining intercity services, as they only served Illinois, may no longer have been Federally regulated. A change in how Amtrak services are funded in 2008 Would affect any takeover. Intrastate runs and services less than 750 miles are state responsibility, and I doubt Florida would pay. Since FEC was an early quitter, don’t know if Amtrak’s statutory right of access would apply.

While legally and financially ring-fenced from Brightline Florida, Brightline West is going to be shaken by investor confidence.

Look again, YLB. The poll did not break out “Young American Jews”. You took a poll of 18-29 adults and invented a Jewish cohort that the pollsters did not report. You linked to an article that does not include the words Jew, Jews, or Jewish.

By the way, that poll did find that a plurality of respondents think Ukraine is a burden to the US. Your linked article reported the 21% who think Ukraine is a benefit but not the 31% who think Ukraine is a burden.

You used the word “increasingly” as if the poll measured responses compared to earlier responses to the same questions and found differences. There was no comparison to earlier polling in the article, nor in the poll itself.

Try to read the articles you share with an adult mindset, YLB. Spare yourself some embarrassment. You caused Darryl to facepalm with this one.

Instead, the solutions proposed by Jewish educators and philanthropists involved doubling down on existing strategies: cultivating warm feelings toward Israel through more sponsored trips and education, while dismantling the forces — including social media and teachers unions — that they believe are causing young Jews to sour on the country.

“TikTok is just smashing our young people’s brains all day long with videos of carnage in Gaza,” Sarah Hurwitz, Michele Obama’s former speechwriter who has written two books about Jewish identity, told the audience of some 2,000 Jewish professionals. “This is why so many of us can’t have a sane conversation with younger Jews.”

During graveyard hours it’s daytime in India, and there are hundreds if not thousands of Indian-born, US-trained radiologists who then returned to their own country. Telemedicine enables radiologists certified in the US to provide rapid turnaround interpretations of studies acquired in the US by utilizing radiologists who live in other parts of the world, regardless of the time of day.

It must be frightening to YLB that should a YLB family member contract acute appendicitis and be seen in nighttime hours at the ER, the abdomen CT would be interpreted by a Hindu with the same skin color as JD Vance’s wife. That is correct, a Hindu might be part of life-or-death decision-making for a YLB family member. Scary.

Depending on the capacity of the stadium a country’s Federation is allotted between 5 and 10% of the Total seats for an individual match.

In the case of Seattle, assuming they got a full 10% allotment that’s 6900 tickets. That’s a 2/3rds full HecEd. Half a Pauley. A wednesday noon game in Minnesota Twins/Mariners.

The system is similar to a Super Bowl, where each team is given, roughly 1/4 of the seats available to distribute to their fans, leaving half of the stadium for the general public or in the case of the Super Bowl corporate sponsors and Ticketmaster resellers.

And by the way, you’re arguing with those hippies at Forbes magazine who did a dive on how the World Cup attendance for the USA is not going to generate even close to the revenue that was promised.

Take away the VRA districts, Republicans argue, and the current version of the Democratic Party can’t win the House. Halt immigration and stop counting non-citizens in the Census, and its current coalition can’t get to 270 electoral votes.

    Shane Kidwell

Washington just became the first state in U.S. history to terminate a public employee pension plan.

The plan belongs to retired police officers and firefighters. LEOFF Plan 1 was 160% funded as of June 2024 per the state’s own actuarial valuation. It had not required a single contribution in 25 years. By 2029 it was projected to reach 200% funded with a $4.3 billion surplus.

The legislature terminated the plan, swept $3.9 billion, and is using $880 million of it to refill a rainy day fund it already drained to cover a deficit it created.

Days ago, retired first responders including former Congressman Dave Reichert sued the state to stop it. The bill passed the House 55-39 and was advanced out of Appropriations without a public hearing. Every yes vote was a Democrat. The governor signed it in April.

LEOFF 1 closed to enrollment in 1977. Most of the pensioners are dead; a little over 5,000 are still collecting benefits. It’s unlikely they will live long enough to empty the fund’s reserves of $4 billion, which amounts to roughly $800,000 per surviving enrollee. The surplus originated from investment returns, not member contributions. The bill phases out the LEOFF 1 structure by 2029, and turns over unneeded funding to the state, but doesn’t terminate or reduce anyone’s pension benefits.

@129 And after only 48 hours of trying the U.S. is abandoning it’s tentative effort to reopen the Strait by force.

    Here’s why:

President Donald Trump’s abrupt reversal on his plan to help ships go through the Strait of Hormuz came after a key Gulf ally suspended the U.S. military’s ability to use its bases and airspace to carry out the operation, according to two U.S. officials.

Trump surprised Gulf allies by announcing “Project Freedom” on social media Sunday afternoon, the officials said, angering leadership in Saudi Arabia. In response, the Kingdom informed the U.S. it would not allow the U.S. military to fly aircraft from Prince Sultan Airbase southeast of Riyadh or fly through Saudi airspace to support the effort, the officials said.

A call between Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman did not resolve the issue, the two U.S. officials said, forcing the president to pause Project Freedom in order to restore U.S. military access to the critical airspace.

Other close Gulf allies were also caught off guard; the president spoke with leaders in Qatar after the effort had already begun.

No connection is being implied. Simply stating the obvious cruise ships have always been floating Petri dishes and cruises departing US ports are far more likely to be have an outbreak now than they were a year ago.

In the same way handing food inspection over to the producers will likely lead to more frequent E Coli, Salmonella and Lysteria outbreaks.

What’s more inportant to Carnival, on time departure with a full boat or doing a full analysis of food and beverage surfaces.

Reports from multiple sources I tend to find credible on medical issues. Say the flight attendant on the KLM flight has tested negative for Hanta. Hanta Has a long gestation. So she will remain under observation.

How again would US inspectors have prevented that from happenin?

It’s not done happening yet, troll. We need inspectors to keep plague ships from pouring virus out onto the Seattle waterfront this summer.

This is another great example of precisely why we can no longer afford MAGA in government. They’re too high, too juiced, too distracted by social media and attention grabbing stunts to follow basic patterns of action and consequences. They FA constantly. They are unable FO.

    @ 184

First case of hantavirus diagnosed in Israel after patient’s visit to Eastern Europe
However, unlike the outbreak of the South American Andes strain currently drawing attention aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, the Israeli was infected with a European strain of the virus.

The patient is believed to have been infected during a stay in Eastern Europe several months ago and sought medical attention after developing symptoms associated with the disease.

Clearly this is also Donald Trump’s fault. Because in libbieland correlation always equates to causation.
