And Republicans in recent years have made it clear they don’t like the terms of the contract anymore, and won’t be bound by it anymore if they can help it.

    This is materially different from 165 years ago, when the slave states seceded from the union and embarked on a civil war to enforce their demands. The original Constitution enshrined and protected slavery; that civil war had more to do with southerners perceiving a threat to their agrarian economy from northern political dominance.

    This time is different in that Republicans don’t want to leave the constitutional republic; instead, they want to recast its rules. The threat they perceive this time is not to a section of the country’s economy, or their own economic fortunes, but to their role in society; specifically, the steady weakening of white male dominance in all of the country. What they want is not separation but domination. To get there they’re trying to rewrite the rules on elections, free speech, and equality.

    The Constitution is not dead, it’s merely under fire, like a modern-day Fort Sumter. This is the “cival war” they promised us. It’s being fought with defiance of courts and the rule of law, not guns, although they keep reminding us they have guns in reserve if these more “peaceful” methods fail to achieve their objectives of a white male dominated, Christian nationalist society, where other races and religions are not welcome and — if they realize all of their ambitions — women will submit to their husbands and won’t be allowed to vote or work outside the home.

    Vance’s qualifications are not a whole lot different than those of Boxcheck Momala – no time as a state AG but a fair amount of time as an accomplished author.

In July of last year Cantor Fitzgerald reported to Wired that they had created a fund to buy the rights to tariff refunds.
    “Traders at the firm’s investment banking subsidiary, Cantor Fitzgerald & Co., say they have the capacity to buy the rights to hundreds of millions of dollars in potential refunds from companies who have paid Trump’s tariffs. We have the capacity to trade up to several hundred million of these presently and can likely upsize that in the future to meet potential demand.””
    They now own the rights to any redemptions from those corporations. The proceeds of those sales to Lutnick are what those companies used to hold down and absorb the added costs, along with passing some of those costs along to consumers. That’s partly why the tariff effects were not fully expressed in the inflation numbers.
