Friday Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Friday, 2/21/25, 7:54 am

Carl, Carl. You keep telling me to write or call my legislators. But what should I call them about? What’s the state of several important bills working their way through the legislature, preferably organized by category? Good news! The good folks at Range Media have you covered.

Quick reminder to all that the hair transplants, drug treatments, hormone injections, and facial plastic surgery* that Elon Musk has openly discussed having to restore his hairline, strengthen his jaw line, and bulk out his physique are all various forms of gender affirming healthcare treatments.

*Former partners have alleged that he has also relied from time to time on oral and injected medications for erectile dysfunction. Which is also gender affirming healthcare treatment.

Nice to see some honest reporting out of NYT:

Botched Care and Tired Staff: Planned Parenthood in Crisis
The health care provider of last resort is working to shore up affiliate clinics that are in dire financial straits. Patients report failed abortions, misplaced IUDs and inadequately trained staff.

A Nebraska clinician in 2022 did not realize that a woman was four months pregnant when she inserted an IUD. Several hours later, the patient was rushed to an emergency room and gave birth to a stillborn fetus…

Well, that’s one way to work around NE’s abortion restrictions. Stab the in-utero baby to death instead.

In a case settled in California last year, a woman accused the organization of improperly implanting a birth control device in her arm and causing nerve damage.

    It’s called Norplant. Not Nerve-plant.

@1 Stocks were/still are severely overvalued, so the market was overdue for a pullback — and this isn’t much of one.

More interesting is the “University of Michigan consumer sentiment index fell to 64.7 in January, a decline of 10% and a steeper drop than expected as consumers raised concerns about higher inflation ….”

That’s a huge one-month drop in consumer sentiment and suggests a sharply slowing economy ahead if not an outright recession.

… suggests a sharply slowing economy ahead if not an outright recession.

Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit finds it inconvenient to mention the sharply slowing economy behind:

Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 2.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2024 (October, November, and December), according to the advance estimate released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the third quarter, real GDP increased 3.1 percent.

GDP growth slowed 0.8 points in one quarter, and it would have been far worse if not for higher consumer spending (that’s what happens when prices increase, and when consumers lard on additional credit card debt) and higher government spending (that’s what happens when liberals shaft Welfare Queen YLB’s fucked kids to coddle their special interests, like chicks with dicks and DEI):

The increase in real GDP in the fourth quarter primarily reflected increases in consumer spending and government spending that were partly offset by a decrease in investment.

Investment was down a full point.

The price index for gross domestic purchases increased 2.2 percent in the fourth quarter, compared with an increase of 1.9 percent in the third quarter. The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index increased 2.3 percent, compared with an increase of 1.5 percent. Excluding food and energy prices, the PCE price index increased 2.5 percent, compared with an increase of 2.2 percent.

As I said above, people spent more because they were forced to.

The economy has been tanking for quite awhile. Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit decided to wake up to it 32 days, 23 hours, and 35 minutes ago.

The costs of DEI are suggested by the results of a forced end to DEI in places, like Harvard Law:

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (TNND) — The number of Black students enrolled at Harvard Law School is down, according to new data released by the school Monday.

The finding follows a 2023 Supreme Court ruling which struck down affirmative action. That practice involved taking race into account when conducting admissions to create a diverse student body.

In the school’s class of 2027, the number of Black enrollees dropped to 19, according to campus newspaper the Harvard Crimson. The prior year’s class boasted 43 Black students.

Hispanic student enrollment also saw a decrease, according to the publication, dropping from 63 to 32. Asian enrollment increased from 103 to 132, the Crimson added.

The Harvard Black Law Students Association wrote in a post via Instagram the school was “reeling” from the “harrowing reality” revealed by the data.

Amy Wax was right about the composition of Penn’s classes, too. It’s why they are trying to fire her.

When your prostate explodes, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit, I hope you are attended to by a medical school graduate who would be cleaning toilets if not for affirmative action.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Friday cleared the way for the Trump administration to pull thousands of U.S. Agency for International Development staffers off the job in the U.S. and around the world.

U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols declined to keep in place his temporary block on the effort to remove all but a small fraction of USAID staffers from their posts, as part of an administration plan that would also give those abroad a 30-day deadline to move back to the U.S. at government expense.

I hope AP wins this. Trump barred their reporters from White House briefings, press conferences, presidential events, and Air Force One for a petty reason: AP didn’t change their stylebook from “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America.” But the principle involved is huge: Trump is trying to coerce a news organization into modifying its content to conform with his wishes. And this isn’t a private spat between Trump and the AP because, as Colonel Ludlow would put it, “That’s a public office you hold there, Mr. President.”

They will manufacture investigations exactly the way House and Senate Republicans have manufactured investigations against Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and anyone else they deem to be a political threat. @ 38

This is the clearest indication so far that the Supreme Court may not rubberstamp Trump’s orderssees no reason that the appeals process should not follow normal order in this case.

Instead, the justices explained in a brief order, they put the government’s request on hold until Jackson’s order expires on Feb. 26.
    …
Moreover, Dellinger added, Jackson’s order simply leaves the status quo in place while “extremely expedited proceedings” to resolve the dispute move forward. Jackson could ultimately decide the case “in ways that avoid any need for this Court’s intervention (or at least create a proper record for it).”

In a brief order, the court on the one hand noted the Trump administration’s concession that the Supreme Court “typically does not have appellate jurisdiction over” temporary restraining orders. On the other hand, it observed, Dellinger emphasized that the temporary restraining order “is set to expire on February 26,” when Jackson has scheduled a hearing on his motion for a preliminary injunction. Taking both of those factors into consideration, the court placed the government’s request on hold until Feb. 26.

In a three-page opinion, Gorsuch (joined by Alito) suggested that the court’s decision not to act on the government’s request at this time reflected “a concern that the TRO may not yet have ripened into an appealable order.”

The IBA has released few details of the testing, and the International Olympic Committee, which no longer recognizes the organization as the global federation for boxing, has condemned the IBA’s testing process, calling it “arbitrary” and “flawed.” Even if the IBA’s claims are true, however, it’s incorrect to call Khelif and Lin men or transgender women.

Scott Curtis is a retired U.S. Navy Captain. For those unfamiliar, a Navy Captain is an O-6. That’s the highest rank attainable through performance advancement in any of the services. And the rank at which the vast majority of officers retire. Upon his retirement from the Navy as a highly qualified nuclear engineer with twenty five years of experience in management and command, after briefly working in the private sector, last July Curtis went to work for FEMA in FEMA region 7 as the chief of staff. Then a couple of weeks ago, when like everyone else at FEMA, he got the infamos “Fork in the Road” email from DOGE featuring a java script radio button allowing him to “resign immediately from (his) position while retaining all pay and benefits regardless of (his) daily workload and an exemption from in-person work requirements” through the end of September. Curtis figured for him it was an excellent opportunity. He could continue to draw his military pension and healthcare benefits, and at least between now and September he could continue to collect his full salary from FEMA. And during that time he could work aggressively with a recruiter to get placed in a new career, one that would probably pay better than FEMA. He was slightly disappointed to see his service to his contry and his community being cut shorter than he had expected. But he wasn’t disappointed to be leaving behind the Trump administration. So right before the deadline on February 6th he clicked on the button.

After clicking on the email button Curtis received an immediate auto-reply from OPM telling him his response had been received and that the office would follow up shortly. But they never did. Weeks went by. Then just four days ago Curtis received a letter signed by the acting Deputy Regional Administrator for FEMA region 7 firing him from his employment. He was locked out of his workplace and his personal belongings were disposed of in the trash.

    Stay classy GOP.

@51 So if you take the buyout deal, you get fired immediately, so they don’t have to pay you through September. Why would they want to, if you’re not doing any work? And why would they want you to do work they don’t want done? I think they just put the fine print of the buyout deal out there for everyone to see. Of course many people assumed there was a catch, and suspected the severance wouldn’t be paid, and now everyone knows what the catch is.

It’s no surprise at all that the first Pentagon general to get fired is the black guy.

President Donald Trump abruptly fired Air Force Gen. CQ Brown Jr. as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Friday, sidelining a history-making fighter pilot and respected officer as part of a campaign to rid the military of leaders who support diversity and equity in the ranks.

    https://www.aol.com/trump-fires-chairman-joint-chiefs-004046181.html

Presumably the dozens of female fighter pilots in the Air Force and Navy, each trained at a cost of millions, will be kicked out of the service as part of Trump’s anti-DEI campaign.

Maybe because it’s only 10% of the workforce there.

Approximately one-tenth of the center’s workers have now been let go…

And if it’s targeted at administrators, the result will probably be a better-functioning research entity.

    From the NIH grant site:

NIH’s mission is to “seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems” in order to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability. In furtherance of this mission, NIH spent more than $35 Billion in Fiscal Year 2023 on almost 50,000 competitive grants to more than 300,000 researchers at more than 2,500 universities, medical schools, and other research institutions across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.[1] Of this funding, approximately $26 billion went to direct costs for research, while $9 billion was allocated to overhead through NIH’s indirect cost rate.

So we blew 25% of our “research” money on non-research. That’s largely administrators and their minions.

What if we spent only 10% on administration and laid off 15% of those employed? Like these guys (same link):

    10%

Gates Foundation (for institutions of higher education)
    Smith Richardson Foundation

Or howz about we only lay off 13%? We could fund charitable efforts by these guys:

    12%

    Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation
    Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Even the NIH knows it’s bloated, and in the link above mandated admin costs of no more than 15%. That’s a haircut of 10%.

And that’s what just happened to the Alzheimers outfit that Robin Dumbfuck Rabbit is twisting his panties over.

Spoiler alert: The agency will function just fine as long as it makes the cuts the smart way. Unfortunately, it’s administrators who will do the cutting.

  73. 73

    Vicious Troll spews:

This is what the NIH has been paying for administrative costs (link @ 72):

Yet the average indirect cost rate reported by NIH has averaged between 27% and 28% over time.[2] And many organizations are much higher—charging indirect rates of over 50% and in some cases over 60%.

This is what is going to happen now that someone actually is enforcing a cost reduction:

    NIH Implementation

For any new grant issued, and for all existing grants to IHEs retroactive to the date of issuance of this Supplemental Guidance, award recipients are subject to a 15 percent indirect cost rate. This rate will allow grant recipients a reasonable and realistic recovery of indirect costs while helping NIH ensure that grant funds are, to the maximum extent possible, spent on furthering its mission. This policy shall be applied to all current grants for go forward expenses from February 10, 2025 forward as well as for all new grants issued.

The NIH knows it’s bloated. Subject to the preceding paragraph, NIH-CARD probably slashed its workforce 10% because it’s been spending 25% of its grant money on administration.

Somebody not on the federal dole tell me why this is such a fucking catastrophe. (Spoiler: it’s not)

Last spring Portland State students took over a campus library, and vandalized it in protest over the Gaza genocide. Portland Police Bureau moved in aggressively and made lots of arrests. Our weakling troll was very sexually gratified at the time.

Since then most of the dozens of students arrested and charged have plead out and received sentences for community service. About a half dozen who protested their innocence or claimed excessive force remained charged pending trial until this week when all charges are dropped.

PPB destroyed about half the police recorded video footage of the arrests ahead of discovery. What they failed to clock was that complete copies of all the police video had already been turned over to the city attorney as part of a consent decree to limit civil liability. So when defense attorneys representing the students made routine requests to the city of Portland for all records, the full video footage was included, revealing to the defense that County Prosecutors, who rely on the PPB, had falsely certified their compliance with discovery.

Because of the PPB lying to Multnomah prosecutors the County was forced to drop the remaining charges.

More police do not make communities more safe.
