The Seattle P-I has posted their “Five to remember” and “Five to forget” from 2005, and lookie who made the list:
And five to forget …
Stefan Sharkansky and David Goldstein
The right-wing Shark and left-wing Goldy have dominated the local political blogosphere, which during the governor’s race controversy sounded like a schoolyard shouting match.
Newspaper reporters dissing bloggers? Imagine that.
(Hmm. I’m guessing that if the JOA goes the way we all expect it to go, it will be Stefan and I who will be forgetting the P-I in a couple of years.)

The MSM is afraid of blogs because the bloggers are going after the righties and the MSM has been afraid to do that!
cougar spews:
When blogs like this one do a much better job of reporting and digging deeper into the news it is no wonder the MSM is worried. MSM has to cow down to their corporate advertisers (mostly right wing) and they must be very careful what they print.
danw spews:
They are just rounding up the jews and putting them together. Oh my God…Now the PI?
danw spews:
What was the name of the PI reporter again who outed Brownie?
DT spews:
I saw that and have to agree with the Sharkansky part. Don’t know why you were lumped in with him, however. Aw, fuck ’em, you did more good this year than the PI did anyway.

Hi,
This is a bit off topic, but I thought somefolks should know. There is a poster at (un)SP who has as his linked email address, an anti-semitic slur aimed directly at David. (It contains the “K” word). This disturbs me. I know that Goldy has the ability to let this kind of shit roll off his back, but I don’t. I find it vile and disgusting. The poster is Alphabet Soup, I think he posts here on occasion too.
I just needed to vent and make folks aware of this hate mongering anti-semitic asshole.

It rhymes with “hike”. Which is something upChuck should take.

I can’t agree with your assessment any more than I can agree with some on the right that there is a bias in the MSM beyond what can be expected. For starters, media bias is not easy to measure. Further, if you happen to be one of those “I’ll know it when I see it” crowd, then you can understand why those on the right see the NYT as cheerleader for the left, just as you consider Fox News a front for the RNC.
Mark The Redneck spews:
marks – Re NYT… do you find it at all curious that NYT sat on the terrorist monitoring story until Patriot Act came up for renewal? They knew for a year. Does it strike you that it could be politically motivated? Also, where’s the outcry to find out who leaked it? Left got all in a lather about the Plame leak (which was inconsequential for national security) but not a peep by NYT or left on who compromised security by leaking monitoring activity.
Ivan spews:
marks @ 16:
Nobody “considers” Fox News to be a front for the RNC. That is Fox News’ stated purpose, stated at its inception by its founder, Rupert Murdoch, to counter the so-called “liberal” media.
No matter how many “journalists” earn a paycheck at Fox News, they are nothing more than paid shills for the right-wing propaganda machine. And it’s not just me saying so. It is the man who is signing their paychecks, and he been loud and proud about it.
Those on the right who want to keep kidding themselves that Fox News is a legitimate news source are fools or liars, or both.
marks spews:
MTR @17
I addressed that here as my primary point a week ago. As for the NYT, they are a bit to the left, just as Fox is a bit to the right.
Proud to be an Ass spews:
@17 Hey, vagina lips!
Re NYT… do you find it at all curious that NYT sat on the terrorist monitoring story until Patriot Act came up for renewal?
No. You seem to imply the release was politically timed, but you have not one shred of evidence–just more typical right wing loon guilt by implication.
Does it strike you that it could be politically motivated?
Not really.
….but not a peep by NYT or left on who compromised security by leaking monitoring activity.
Uh, lips, we have laws protecting those who leak lawbreaking activities conducted by the government. Enlighten us again about the motives of those who leaked Plame’s identity.

Ah thanks for the reminder…I dont recall most racist words like you obviously do, since I prefer not to use them. Although I was curious and it was certainly nice of you to bring yourself out of the gutter to answer me…possibly be more polite next time.
marks spews:
Ivan @18
No matter how many “journalists” earn a paycheck at Fox News, they are nothing more than paid shills for the right-wing propaganda machine.
How do they propagate their right-wing agenda? Is Murdoch sitting in the central control room at Studio B whispering into Sheppard Smith’s earpiece? I don’t doubt Murdoch started Fox with an eye to “level the playing field” as he saw it and that is reflected from their shows like O’Reilly and the rest. Yet, if you happen to center solely on their (actual) newscasts and updates, it is no different than CNN or MSNBC. News remains news, whoever tells it.
What is not clear is what we measure bias from. This debate has been going on for a good long time, and I recall many on the left saying there was no bias in the MSM years ago under Reagan and Bush 41. Now, with the advent of Fox, suddenly you get blanket statements from cougar @6 stating in no uncertain terms that the MSM is right wing based on their advertisers?
This is not rocket science: Based on your own personal political filter, you will read/hear a story and walk away from it with a different perception than somebody else who has a political viewpoint opposite your own. Even the type of story will have a varying affect based on individual political inclination.
I do not doubt the NYT has a leftist bent. Similarly, the San Diego Union-Tribune tends to lean right. I still can’t figure out the Dallas Morning News angle(R or L)…We can all sit around and dissect a particular story and find examples that fit with our viewpoint and those that clash with it. As yet, there has been nothing to empirically measure bias in the MSM.
Mr. Cynical spews:
Goldy—
A tip of the Hat to both you and Stefan for an outstanding year.
Being dissed by a piece of shit rag like the P-I with it’s plummeting circulation is a Badge of Honor. When the P-I goes under, there will be a lot of unemployed, ignorant so-called journalists asking you for career advice!!!
Perhaps some of your LEFTIST PINHEADED KLOWNS will be able to advise these unemployed losers on how to bilk the system for handouts….”Free career re-training, where the food banks are, how to sell food stamps, filing false unemployment and L&I claims….ALL THE STUFF THE HA KLOWNS are famous for!
marks spews:
Proud @20
Uh, lips, we have laws protecting those who leak lawbreaking activities conducted by the government.
I’m not sure I agree with this (see my link @16). The lawbreaking aspect in relation to this subject remains to be proven. My main point in that other thread is that clearly there was a leak of National Security procedures and operations in contravention of established rules (you don’t go to the media, unless we are talking about a Hollywood movie). I would indeed focus on the source of the leak; just as Congress will soon focus on what areas of the Constitution (if any) the president is allowed to ignore in order to protect us.

Meanwhile, shouting matches are in vogue these days aren’t they? At least that’s all we see in Congress and on Fox these days.
Jerry Springer Jr. spews:
I think that there is a reasonable side to the PI’s diss of Goldy. The j-schools teach that journalism is a sacred public trust that protects democracy through the cultivation of informed and civil dialogue. This is usually not what is cultivated in this blog, and you can’t blame it all on the professional wingers.
My worry is that “anything goes” blogs like this one will fuel the devolution of public discourse to the point where reasoned debate becomes passe, and physical violence becomes an accepted way of settling scores. When that happens, you can say goodbye to democracy.
Goldy’s right: The PI is more likely to disappear than blogs like this one. However, it isn’t clear to me that Goldy recognizes the evils that have escaped from the pandora’s box he has helped open.
Roger Rabbit spews:

“Re NYT… do you find it at all curious that NYT sat on the terrorist monitoring story until Patriot Act came up for renewal? They knew for a year. Does it strike you that it could be politically motivated?”
There’s no question that NYT sitting on the story for a year was politically motivated — the Bush administration asked them not to run it, and NYT accomodated them.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Hey MTR, here’s a question for you: Since Bush disregards laws anyway, why does he need the Patriot Act? If he’s going to do as he pleases no matter what the Constitution or Congress says, why bother with the farce of having a Patriot Act?

Roger Rabbit spews:
27
When did Goldy say he’s a “journalist?” How many times does he have to re-post that he’s a partisan blogger before you bother to read it? As for “reasoned debate” and “physical violence,” the Republicans started the shouting, have done everything they can to drown out reasoned debate, and have threatened or advocated physical violence against liberals for years. (E.g., Newt Gingrich exhorting Republicans to wage “civil war” against Democrats, and Ann Coulter telling her national audience that liberals should be put in “concentration camps” and “executed.”) Just how much longer do you think liberals should be lap dogs for rightwing haters? Ten more years? A hundred? Forever? Fuck that … we’ve had enough, it’s time to kick butts.

Goldy, I can’t believe the PI dissed you! And put you in the same boat w/ what’s his name. I started reading your blog almost daily during the governor dispute and have continued reading regularly. I enjoy the humor, in-depth progressive political commentary, and the occasional “F-Bomb” dropped on horsesass.org. That’s not to say that I’m not an avid MSM observer as well. May MSM and the blogosphere co-exist peacefully in 2006. And, thank you, Goldy.
Goldy spews:
Jerry @27,
Quite the contrary, I have on many occasions expressed my concerns about the dangers of blogging, and have repeatedly warned readers to put the blogs in context.
I should also add, that criticize the MSM because I cherish and respect it. While I joke about the P-I disappearing (one good dig deserves another) I desperately want it to survive.
All that said, I think lumping me in with Stefan is another example of the MSM’s misguided efforts at “balance.” It is a weakness which is easily manipulated… a weakness I have often manipulated myself.
Mr. Cynical spews:
Goldy sez:
” While I joke about the P-I disappearing (one good dig deserves another) I desperately want it to survive.”
You may want it to survive Goldy….but it won’t. The P-I is a piece of shit. Advertisers are seeing that only losers with little money actually read it….mainly looking for ways not to work for a living!

Sort of strange that an organization dedicated to fight anti-Jewish bigotry and discrimination has its headquarters at the United Nations Plaza. Especially considering the number of stridently anti-Jewish countries that belong to the United Nations, and the extremely small number of United Nations member countries that consider themselves friends of Israel.
Richard Pope spews:
Anyway, Stefan and Goldy seem to share the same opinion of the Seattle “Lost Intelligencer”. That newspaper deserves to fail and go down the toilet. The King County Journal, with less than one third the circulation, makes a respectable profit. The Seattle P-I, on the other hand, is just as screwed up in its business common sense as it is in its political orientation.

I’d rather forget 2005. It was the year that the Bush cabal let nearly 1000 of our soldiers die in a war for oil. It was a year that the GOP ran the nation’s deficits to new highs. It was a year when republicans in Washington tried to steal an election. It was a year when the GOP was willing to risk our national security by outing a CIA agent in order to make political gains. It was a year that our reputation on the international stage was further destroyed by the idiot occupying the White House. It was a year when my worst fears about the racists that control the republican party were born out by the abject failures of the Bush regime during Katrina. It was a year when corruption found its way into every nook and cranny of the GOP controlled government. 2006 HAS to be better!

There were a few exchanges earlier in this thread about the “K” word and some blog commenter using the “K” word as part of their alleged e-mail address. An organization that has its headquarters, ironically enough, in the United Nations Plaza.

It is funny that the P-I and its writers that Goldy so fawns over would turn and label him forgettable.
Without wire service stories, the Seattle newspapers would be scarcely more than pamphlets. It’s ridiculous that these publications label the source of their stories as “Seattle Times News Services” rather than citing the actual wire service by name.
The P-I (and the Times for that matter) is a remarkably one-dimensional publication with little to no analytical thought or journalistic skill to inform their pieces. If a fact is good enough to be given out at a press conference then it is good enough to print without cross-checking; perhaps balanced with a counter viewpoint but never appearing along with other facts that were not point-blank offered by a quotable other. This leads me to believe that the writers are myopic and unable to really grasp issues. Why bother? It’s just a paycheck. They think that this “sacred duty to investigate and report” comes with the job title and doesn’t require refreshing with their own efforts.
Newspapers like the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Indianapolis Star dwarf the prowess of our local rags. Another Hearst property, the Albany Times Union in NY is a high quality publication that produces 90% of its own material and somehow stays in business–while serving a market perhaps 25% of the size that the PI purports to serve.
Anyhow Goldy, you’re a partisan shitbag that is little more than a mouthpiece/echo chamber for leftwing talking points. Your blind devotion to party politics is insulting and there are days when I simply assume that you are on the local Democratic payroll. Sharkansky’s obsession with the 2004 governor’s election reached the point of…well…an obsession. His minute-to-minute reporting resulted in fatigue eventually and had me questioning his sanity. Fortunately he has Matt Rosenberg–a refreshing voice of reason and mostly moderate politics. America needs more people like him in the blogging world. Shills like you and Sharkansky are part of what’s wrong with this country.
