Open Thread 3/4

by Carl Ballard — Tuesday, 3/4/14, 4:50 pm

– Mark Driscoll should probably consider just stopping for a while until he can get past the plagiarism stuff. Don’t worry, buddy. The asshole church you built will still be there when you get back.

– This is a lovely story from when Multnomah County issued marriage licenses to gay couples.

– Some of the writing from the Times makes me wonder if the newsprint ink they’re using is actually liquified privilege. But let’s check out the latest…

– It’s sort of dizzying to look at the map of bikes that have been stolen in Seattle.

– At least the Renaissance popes commissioned grand architecture and art. These kids mostly just cash checks.

– In a previous Open Thread, I said that I was sorry for the people who lost money on Bitcoin. That’s still mostly true, but there are exceptions.

@1 So what? Graham blamed the Boston Marathon bombing on Obama, too.

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Let’s face it, Obama is black, so if the solar system is swallowed by a black hole, it will be his fault! He just seems to attract blackness.

Republican Legislator: Rape Should Be Legal

“If a woman has [the right to an abortion], why shouldn’t a man be free to use his superior strength to force himself on a woman?” Lockman wrote. “At least the rapist’s pursuit of sexual freedom doesn’t [in most cases] result in anyone’s death.”

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....74586.html

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Let’s skip over the fact that lots and lots of rapists kill their victims, and cut to the chase: We need more Republicans like this guy. That’s right, a Republican who says what he really thinks, instead of one who pulls the wool over voters’ eyes by pretending to be something he’s not, is to be treasured. I didn’t say elected, I said treasured. Because he reveals exactly what you’re gonna get if you vote for any Republican. The only thing this guy did differently is he honestly expressed his true feelings. They all think like him. He’s unusual only because he didn’t lie about what was in his mind. As I said, an honest Republican is a thing to be treasured. Just don’t elect him to anything.

“The Indiana Senate on Tuesday deleted a state tax provision that would have inadvertently allowed same-sex couples to file joint tax returns in Indiana.

“The step was necessary, a Senate GOP leader said, because of the potential impact of the federal government’s decision last year to allow married same-sex couples to file federal tax returns jointly beginning this year.”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: At some point, people should stop wringing their hands in helpless outrage, and BOYCOTT states whose voters elect legislators who pass laws that discriminate against people they don’t like.

The German Foreign Minister thinks that their is a glimmer of hope in the Ukraine, but the West has to act quickly.
    http://m.dw.de/english/mobile.A-17476362-9097.html

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier sought a slightly more upbeat tone on the situation in Crimea on Wednesday, saying he believed that tensions between Moscow and Kyiv could still be calmed if the international community moved with haste.
“There is now a small chance to get an international political process into motion that would be able to stop the spiral of escalation between Russia and Ukraine in the Crimea,” Steinmeier told Wednesday’s edition of the Rheinische Post daily, before cautioning: “Time is running out. There is a threat of nothing less than a division of Europe. The longer this crisis brews, the more difficult any solution will become.”

By the way, the German Foreign Minister is not a member of the Chancellor’s Christian Democrats, but the rival Social Democrats. Chancellor Angela Merkel was 4 votes shy of an outright majority, and the traditional ally, the equivalent of the Libertarians had been swept out, so it was a choice between the Social Democrats(equivalent of our Democrats), Greens, or the East German Communists(now going by the name Die Lienke, the Left). The last one was anon starter, and the Greens went nowhere, leaving a grand coalition as the only option.

They can’t help it. One central feature of the psyche of people who gravitate to the right wing (lack of empathy foremost among them) is the idolatry of a powerful authoritarian.

One example of high end(mostly separate right of way) bus rapid transit, is Ottawa, and even the transitory has some street running. Well, it has become a victim of it’s own success, and is being converted to light rail. Ironically, the rolling stock will come from Alstom of France.Across the river is Quebec, and concerns are that the Part I Quebecois might try another referendum on sovereignty if they win a majority in the next provincial elections. The last one barely failed.

Looks like Swiss Voters will be asked again to change the individual mandate for private health insurance system they have to single payer. Parliament opposed the change, but the Federal Council, which is a collective presidency/cabinet, sent it to the voters.
