Desperation shows its ugly face in many ways.

Virginia Democrats are looking for a way to overturn the state Supreme Court’s Friday decision invalidating the constitutional amendment temporarily adopting new congressional districts that a majority of voters ratified last month. They have a simple—and lawful—solution: Send the entire court into early retirement.

Article VI, Section 9, of the Virginia Constitution gives the legislature unlimited authority to set the retirement age for judges. It specifies, “The General Assembly may also provide for the mandatory retirement of justices and judges after they reach a prescribed age, beyond which they shall not serve, regardless of the term to which elected or appointed.”
    …
This number is arbitrary. States around the country with similar laws mandate retirement across a wide range of ages. Virginia lawmakers can simply lower theirs. Make it 54 for Supreme Court justices—the age of the youngest justice, Stephen McCullough, who joined the majority opinion—and make it take effect immediately.

He repeatedly talked about attacking Iran on many occasions going all the way back to 2016.

Until the rise of the MAGA cult of personality and grievance, the US hasn’t been interested in pursuing objectives like seizing and holding large swaths of territory since the end of the 19th century.

We don’t really have any practical need to do so. And what modern warfare teaches most of all is that there are better ways of obtaining access to resources. Imperial conquest is breathtakingly expensive and dangerous in a modern context, even without nuclear proliferation.

The only reasons for the MAGA cult support for this kind of expeditionary global military aggression is to distract from their own profound failures at home. Our economy is collapsing. Our legal systems are collapsing. Our healthcare systems are collapsing. Our social institutions are collapsing. Our communities are occupied by authoritarian shock troops who kidnap and murder us at will. And all of this is being brought on and accelerated by the MAGA cult and the political and corporate leadership they are imposing on us.

Saw on Threads an interesting knee-jerk reaction to the announcement Great Western Railway in the UK is the latest to be nationalized under the plan to undo the John Major privatization of British Railways. Too many blame Thatcher for BR Privatization, when she actually opposed it, because of the impact on rural communities, a Conservative block. The comment was that First Group should get revenge by making the new Great British Railways buy new Rolling Stock. Problem is, the way British Rail was privatized, the operator doesn’t have that leverage.

Freight and Passenger operations were split into Train Operating Companies with concessions they would operate. Infrastructure was split 80th a separate for profit company that later went broke and was taken back into administration under Blair and operated as a non profit. The nature of the passenger operating concessions actually could have led to a lack of investment in Rolling Stock. 7-10 years, hard to make back the investment that takes 30 years to pay off. So they created ROSCOs, Rolling Stock ownership companies that the concession holder leased from. ROSCOs were mainly for owning and leasing, the maintenance was handled by other companies. So GWR operator First Group doesn’t own the trains, just leases them. Although so far, no plans to nationalize the ROSCOs.

The Tories under Major actually used the EU Railway Liberalization mandate as an excuse to privatize. I’ve been reading up on how countries on the continent have been implementing that, In Germany, two states have developed models for ownership of the rolling stock for Regional services tendered by state authorities. North Rhine-Westphalia put out the bid themselves, and leased the trains to the winning operator, starting with the Rhine-Ruhr Express network. Baden-Wurttenberg at first had tge operator pick what they want, purchase it, and then sell to the state, who would lease it back.

…he wants to work within the existing legal system when fighting against Republicans.

What should probably concern Republicans then, is that passing new legislation lowering the mandatory retirement age of state Supreme Court judges is entirely “within the existing legal system”.

For Democrats to successfully pull off this kind of response to Republican power grabbing requires that they manage how the public perceives it. This is precisely the kind of rhetoric that calls for.

For example, let’s say you were going to continue to operate militarized squads of masked, lawless goons invading peaceful communities in Minnesota, even after you’d been caught murdering innocent civilians, torturing people, vandalizing their homes and businesses, and robbing them. And let’s say as a result of that behavior you had lost one of your most important campaign issues for the midterm elections. But let’s also say you didn’t want to let any of that stop you from continuing to murder and torture Americans.

Then you’d say it’s a “new day” with a new leadership. You’d tell everyone that you are no longer doing any of those incredibly unpopular things that were going to cost you seats in the upcoming elections. Then you’d go ahead and do them anyway.

If I were a Democratic political leader in VA and I was planning on moving ahead with this kind of tactic to restore the redistricting that Virginia voters approved, I’d want to put the opponents of those voters and their wishes to sleep to allow the process of planning and negotiations to move forward without a lot of media lying and typical MAGA conspiracy mongering to interfere.

Children going hungry in the U.S. isn’t theoretical or metaphorical. It’s happening right now in Arizona while Republicans squander hundreds of billions of dollars plundered from Medicaid and food assistance on optional wars.

Since the [Big Ugly Bill] was enacted last summer, about 3.5 million people have fallen off the SNAP rolls nationwide as of January, according to federal data. No state has seen a more dramatic drop than Arizona, which offers a window into what may be in store for other states.

Wikipedia describes Wisconsin’s previous redistricting as follows:

This effort was driven by the Republican Party’s REDMAP (Redistricting Majority Project) to assure the party had control of the United States House of Representatives and state legislatures … through favorable redistricting. Wisconsin’s gerrymandering was so extreme sometimes individual houses on the same block were in different districts. The result was elections that a Wisconsin supreme court justice called “rigged” and a legislature a Princeton University gerrymandering expert called “immune from public opinion.”

Whether the dumbfuck troll admits it or not, Republicans are unpopular, know they’re unpopular, and resort to gerrymandering, voter suppression, and dirty tricks because they know they can’t win if elections are fair.

Labor Department figures showed that gasoline prices are up more than 28% compared to a year ago. AAA says the average gallon of gasoline costs motorists more than $4.50 a gallon, about 44% more than it cost last year at this time.

    41,
The study is probably reflecting what generally accepted economic theory would predict.

But it’s not possible to say this is causative. It’s showing a strong correlation though.

ICE enforcement “surges” in selected Democratic voting communities has primarily focused on workers. How do we know? Because they arrest them at their places of work. Removing 6 workers from a community also removes all of the productivity and the local spending that comes from that productivity. It’s not just their spending that is reduced. Fewer workers means less work for the business owners who employ them. That reduces their income as a business. And so on.

So all that aggregate productivity and spending is removed from the local community along with those immigrant workers. At some point the total value removed is enough to eliminate another job of a native born worker supporting that lost productivity and spending.

There’s really nothing shocking or even surprising about this.
Nor really is it surprising that MAGA cult chuds reject all of it.
It is a cult after all.

Consumer prices rose 3.8% annually in April, the highest since May 2023

The report also contained bad news for workers, as real average hourly wages slipped 0.5% for the month and fell 0.3% annually.

It’s a winning message for November.
