Even with the Paramount hostile takeover of WB on rejected by the board, the Netflix acquisition will probably still face a tough DoJ review. Theater chains aren’t happy. Although to be considered for an Oscar nomination, doesn’t a film have to have been shown in a physical theater?

Interesting critical look at Federal Funding may be hampering transit projects with strings. To qualify for Federal Funding at the time, the Northstar Line in Minnesota was actually forced to be truncated to nowhere, it was supposed to go all the way to St Cloud.

The WES Service in Beaverton still has potential despite its issues. One of it’s main issues was it was forced to use a heavy DMU, instead of a Stadler Light DMU because Portland and Western’s freight customers would not agree to temporal separation, and the FRA wouldn’t issue a waiver. TriMet went with the only Buy America compliant manufacturer, and the company, went under while construction was underway (Colorado Railcar’s main business was tourist coaches for Alaska and Canada) TriMet actually had control of the company briefly to finish the assembly. WES was originally not a TriMet project, suburb to suburb rail is quite rare in the US. Washington County originally proposed it, became a TriMet/Oregon Metro project as it got closer to construction. ADA Compliance led to high platforms, necessitating gauntlet track for freight trains. Stadler has since adapted their FLIRT MU. To meet alternate FRA Crash Regs that allow it to share with freight trains, but it is a low floor design, would require replacing the stations to accommodate them. Meeting WES at Wilsonville is SMART 1X, an express bus from Washington County’s South Metro Area Rapid Transit that continues on to Salem. The P&W line continues to Salem too, Beaverton-Salem is a route the Stadler FLIRT would be good for. Conflicting reports suggest it may or may not be possible to run a FLIRT on a MAX track. Stadler has a Light Rail Vehicle that does just that in Germany, problem is for it to run on P&W would require a waiver or temporal separation.

Another option for the FLIRT would be a frequent commuter rail line that in some ways to avoid using the part of a rail line that may bypass where the people are, or are going, with a Greenfield line using highway right of way if possible.

Photos of Epstein and NY Times opinion columnist David Brooks in 2011 three years after Epstein had been given a weirdly lenient sentence for child rape in Florida by Prosecutor Alexander Acosta who would go on to be Trump’s labor secretary. Acosta now sits on the board of Newsmax, which is based in Boca Raton.

The Times insists this was a public event and the only time David Brooks voluntarily took a photo with a well known Manhattan figure who was also a child rape convict.

I mentioned this in the last thread but it deserves some amplication:

The D.N.C. Is Scrapping Its Report on What Went Wrong in 2024
Ken Martin, the Democratic National Committee chairman, ordered the autopsy months ago but is now said to believe that its release would be counterproductive for the party.

Ken Martin, the chairman of the D.N.C., said on Thursday that he had decided not to publish a report that he ordered months ago into what went wrong for the Democratic Party last year. Party officials have conducted more than 300 interviews with Democrats in all 50 states to create a document that Mr. Martin had once pitched as crucial to charting a path forward.

Mr. Martin will instead keep the findings under seal.

The rationale is that if ignorant, unserious libbies like YLB were to learn just how silly it was for the DNC to force its national leaders to behave as if there was nothing wrong with a clearly senile Joe Biden, and then to behave as if there was nothing wrong with the complete absence of a competitive DNC primary, and then to behave as if there was nothing wrong with the selection of a China-hugging, war-dodging, fraud-ignoring clown to be VP nominee, YLB might not continue to act in a similarly silly manner on the pages of HA.

Ken Martin’s decision allows YLB to dodge that bullet. So here’s to the next three years of silly posts from YLB, with the implied blessings of the HA moderators.

In order to qualify for Oscar consideration, a film must have a minimum one week showing in one of six approved major Metropolitan areas. Additionally, in order to be considered for best picture the film must also have at least a one week theatrical release in 10 of the top 50 US metropolitan cities.*

What amuses me about this is googling ‘Oscar theatrical rule’ provides that information within seconds but as usual Dumbfuck had to have a take that is loud wrong.

This is famously how we got Tommy Wiseau’s ‘The Room’. The story, which is likely not true is an LA resident who regularly went to the Vista’s bargain Wednesday found himself at a matinee for the movie as the only patron and then began telling people that they should go because of how terrible it is.

The film’s entire marketing budget was taking out Nearly building size billboard on the side of an apartment complex on La Brea within view of what was then Jim Henson Studios and along the route to Paramount Studios believed to be on the commute of the studio head at the time Jonathan Dolgan. That and renting the Vista for a week.

It has since become our most streamed movie ever. With a touch of marketing this could have been summer 2025 biggest box office cash grab. We blew it. But we re-released it in Theaters as a sing-a-long version and made a smaller boatload of cash. ‘Golden’ from the film spent five weeks on top of Billboard’s top 100.

    …
In 2026, overall food prices are expected to increase more slowly than the historical average rate of growth. In 2026, prices for all food are predicted to increase 2.7 percent, with a prediction interval of -1.8 to 7.5 percent. Food-at-home prices are predicted to increase 2.3 percent,,,

It’s a publicly available photo from Getty images of a charity event in 2000 attended by Clinton, Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. The redacted faces are of Ross’s son Evan and a couple of Jackson’s adopted kids. Removal of the Getty watermark is visible in the metadata.

“I’d pay another 50 cents for a banh mi”, Goldy once said when defending a minimum wage increase despite the obvious effect said wage increase would necessarily force on restaurant food prices. He did not mention, however, that he’d take it out of the tip.

How does a task-level minimum pay requirement for gig workers affect their earnings and employment? We study this question in the context of a January 2024 law in Seattle that establishes a per-task minimum pay standard for app-based delivery workers. Drawing on novel cross-platform, trip-level gig activity data, we compare earnings and employment trajectories around the implementation of the law for workers who were doing delivery work in Seattle before the reform against workers who had been active in other regions of Washington State. We find that the minimum pay law raised delivery pay per task, though the increases in base pay per task were partially offset by a substantial reduction in average tips, a major component of delivery pay. At the same time, the policy led to a reduction in the number of tasks completed by highly attached incumbent drivers (but not an increase in exit from delivery work), completely offsetting increased pay per task and leading to zero effect on monthly earnings. We find evidence that drivers experienced more unpaid idle time and longer distances driven between tasks…

No one should make $52k plus tips per year for delivering cold pizza and forgetting the red pepper flake.

YLB claims to be unhappy about the widening wealth gap and handouts to those who do not need it.

And yet YLB was unhappy about the end of the EV subsidies. Which makes one wonder why YLB supported EV subsidies at all, given the recipients:

Including the charging equipment, subsidies from governments and utilities and other frequently excluded expenses, the true cost of charging an EV is equivalent to $17.33-per-gallon gasoline—but the EV owner pays less than 7% of that.

Over 10 years, almost $12,000 of costs per EV are transferred to utility ratepayers and taxpayers, effectively socializing the price of recharging an EV while keeping the benefits private.

Due to high entry price points—the average EV costs $58,000, the average gas vehicle $33,000—most EV consumers are affluent.

This is socialism for the rich: a transfer of costs from higher net-worth individuals to middle- and lower-income taxpayers.

I leased my EV as a commercial vehicle, which
    • avoided the income limitations of the “free” $7,500, because there wasn’t a limitation for leasing
    • enables me to deduct the vehicle as a business expense – airport trips and whatnot.
    • enables me to deduct vehicle insurance, licensing, etc. as business expenses

I would like to thank the less fortunate taxpayers and utility ratepayers for subsidizing my daily driver. I would like to thank liberals for the lease workaround on the income limitations.

Most of all, I would like to thank YLB for having no idea that any of this was the result of liberal policies, because surely we would have otherwise read complaints about it, amirite?

… it applies ONLY to cash tips …

    The IRS states differently:

    “No Tax on Tips”
New deduction: Effective for 2025 through 2028, employees and self-employed individuals may deduct qualified tips received in occupations that are listed by the IRS as customarily and regularly receiving tips on or before December 31, 2024, and that are reported on a Form W-2, Form 1099, or other specified statement furnished to the individual or reported directly by the individual on Form 4137.
“Qualified tips” are voluntary cash or charged tips received from customers or through tip sharing.
Maximum annual deduction is $25,000; for self-employed, deduction may not exceed individual’s net income (without regard to this deduction) from the trade or business in which the tips were earned.
Deduction phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers).
Taxpayer eligibility: Deduction is available for both itemizing and non-itemizing taxpayers.
Self-employed individuals in a Specified Service Trade or Business (SSTB) under section 199A are not eligible. Employees whose employer is in an SSTB also are not eligible.
    Taxpayers must:
include their Social Security Number on the return and
file jointly if married, to claim the deduction.
Reporting: Employers and other payors must file information returns with the IRS (or SSA) and furnish statements to taxpayers showing certain cash tips received and the occupation of the tip recipient.

    https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/one-big-beautiful-bill-act-tax-deductions-for-working-americans-and-seniors

I don’t know the answer to this, but if the tip is paid as part of a credit card charge, how does the employer hand that off to the employee without creating a record of some sort? If the employer reports $1,500,000 in tip expense out of $10,000,000 gross credit card revenue, how does the IRS not want to know who that money was handed to?

Re tips paid in greenbacks, got it, no argument. But those are a minority of tips left in decent restaurants.

Video shows random attack on 75-year-old woman in downtown Seattle

SEATTLE — Newly-released videos show the moments a man attacked a woman at random outside the King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle earlier this month.

Fale Vaigalepa Pea, 42, was armed with a wooden board that had a screw through the end of it and used both hands to swing the weapon and strike the victim, 75-year-old Jeanette Marken, in the face, according to charges filed in King County Superior Court.

The hit gouged out Marken’s eye, and she just learned that she will not recover her eyesight in the affected eye, family members told KOMO News on Friday.

Why, it’s enough to compel a certain failed former attorney and current useless, bloviating HA leftist to modify his Saturday trudge route to the library in order to read day-old business news.

It’s fun when people who’ve never worked in an industry comment about it.

charged tips received from customers or through tip sharing.

Charged tips doesn’t mean what you think it means. Many states, often ones that ALSO have a tipped (lower) minimum wage make an assumption about what percentage of your processed sales you received in tips. If a server gets stiffed by a few tables in a shift they may be getting taxed on more tips than they received.

That’s the piece of the proposal that’s good. Eliminating taxes on phantom income.

Charged tips DOES NOT mean tips customers ‘charged’ on a card.

Tip sharing also doesn’t mean what you think it means. But you’ve never ‘tipped out’ the busboy.

    But good try.

The renaming of the National Cultural Center to the John F .
Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was accomplished by an ammendment to the original authorizing legislation. That ammendment, Public Law 88-260, a joint resolution voted and signed into law in 1964 remains in legal effect.

The name of the facility remains the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The authorizing legislation, as ammended, remains the John F. Kennedy Center Act. No ammending or superseding act has been passed to change any of that.

“My goal is to shift to a conservative view of civil rights,” said Lucas, the head of the Trump administration’s top anti-discrimination workforce enforcer, in a interview with Reuters. She warned that initiatives tied to hiring, promotion, or marketing will come under scrutiny.
Lucas’s vision for the workplace discrimination agency entails “attacking” all forms of race discrimination, including DEI; “attacking widespread” religious liberty issues like antisemitism and Covid-19 vaccine mandates; “pushing back” on gender identity and focusing on women’s sex-based rights; and “national origin discrimination”. Lucas told Reuters that enforcement may target a host of initiatives companies have deployed to create, cater to or advertise to any race or gender-based group, including employee resource groups designed to be safe spaces where employees can speak candidly.
    >> Seems that advertising in Black or Asian or Latino or LGBTQ media is now illegal

97)Season 3 of For All Mankind had attempts to halt the Energy Transition, Fusion Energy and EVs has put too many coal and oil workers out of work. Love the show for some of the other Twists they have done to build the alternate timeline. John Lennon survived in the open of Season 2, later gets back with Paul, George and Ringo(2nd breakup happens when George died, the shows an alternate timeline , not a Utopia). Season 4 had the most unexpected twist to a cliffhanger I have seen so far in the show. The former Astronaut turned President came out as her husband’s own secret was about to be exposed. Even though this show, the Soviets following up Leonov with a woman led to NASA having women Astronauts, and the Soviet moon landing leads to Senator Kennedy canceling that party at Chapaquidick (The affair eventually comes to light) leads to Nixon not being re-elected, and momentum for ERA Ratification does not stall(Illinois votes yes), the Republicans still have the Evangelical base, and Wilson’s 92 VP was an Evangelical. He does a primary challenge in 96, but the Secretary of State , having backed Wilson, is the 96 VP, as she gets overwhelmingly re-elected, against Jerry Brown. Sets up a battle of two VP’s, Al Gore(VP to Garry Hart, after Reagan was term limited in 84, as Ted Kennedy lost by a very narrow margin in 76), and George H.W.Bush, Wilson’s second VP.

For All Mankind is a timeline where Bill Clinton is an Arkansas Governor, same bad habits, but the Atwater/Rove machine attacks stick, last mention so far in the show, “Former Arkansas Governor’s Wife files for Divorce). Best part with the alternate 1992 Primary Season, was pretty much the same as real life, just Ohio Governor Springer was in it for awhile.

Everyday frictions in human life is not a bug, it’s a feature – it’s where we find our edges, build resilience, how we grow, and we become who we are. The more AI removes these frictions, the more it inhibits and constrains how we respond to personal and professional challenges and diminishes how we’re able to tolerate uncertainty, manage conflict, and endure emotional discomfort.”
