  8. Amtrak is in the middle of planning the replacement for the Long haul fleet. Looks like Amtrak wants to continue the inefficient one fleet for most of the East, and another for the west. Amtrak’s current fleet was grandfathered in under the ADA, so the current ADA area on the lower deck of a Superliner Coach has and the ADA Compartment on the lower level of the Superliner sleeper more than meets that. The Superliner replacement will have to comply with a strict interpretation of the ADA, and allow for access to the lounge and diner. Single level can provide that access. Best option would be to just go back to single level, and bring back the Dome Car to replace the lounge car.

    One downside to single level only, is Amtrak 8/28, the Empire Builder, which on the west end is two trains, that combine/split at Spokane. The Superliner is based on a Santa Fe design originally developed for such combined ops. Too head off increased losses due to traffic decline while maintaining service, the Santa Fe decided to combine their then all Pullman Super Chief, with the all coach El Capitan in the winter. Too keep train length manageable tgey worked with Budd to design a coach where the seats were on the upper deck, with restrooms, baggage, vestibules, and HVAC on the lower deck. The Hi-Level worked great that the Santa Fe replaced the Coach sections on the San Francisco Chief and Texas Chief with them. For the original train they were purchased for, combining them at least cut down on the number of Engineers, Firemen, Brakemen, and Conductors needed, and in that era, where crews worked 100 mile districts, instead of hours, that was a big saving.
