Well, this week I suppose I’ll propose a toast to good health for Fidel Castro (better intestinal fortitude?)…while…um…burning an American flag…and…and…we’ll sing the national anthem—in Spanish—while smoking Cuban cigars. Yeah…that’s the kind of fun we have each week.

A new InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion poll for the Democratic primary runoff in Georgia’s 4th Congressional district shows challenger Hank Johnson maintaining his lead over incumbent U.S. Representative Cynthia McKinney by a full 15 percentage points as the runoff election looms closer. McKinney’s totals moved up from the last poll late last week, but she still sat well behind former DeKalb County Commissioner Johnson.

Anti-Semitic slurs
Several people have accused Clinton of making anti-Semitic comments or slurs. In 2000, lawyer Paul Fray, who ran Bill Clinton’s failed 1974 run for Congress, claimed that after that defeat, Hillary Rodham, then Clinton’s girlfriend, raged that he (Fray) was a “Fucking Jew Bastard.” Fray’s wife and businessman Neil McDonald both claim to have witnessed this slur. [2] Hillary Clinton denied that she ever made such a remark and released a 1997 letter in which Fray apologized regarding statements he had made about her over the years. [3] In addition Fray had previously been disbarred for altering court documents and also suffered from a medical condition that caused erratic behavior and memory loss. Larry Patterson, a former Arkansas state trooper and bodyguard to Bill and Hillary Clinton who related a series of lurid accusations about the couple, then said he heard the couple use anti-Semitic slurs “10 to 20” times. He asserts that he has heard Hillary use the term “Jew Bastard” and called President Clinton a “Jew Boy” and a “Mother Fucking Jew.” [6]
In a discussion of the Fray allegation, Dick Morris, a former political advisor to President Clinton, asserted that a couple of years previously, Hillary Clinton had used a Jewish stereotype during an argument about consulting fees, stating “Money – that’s all you people care about is money.” [7]

Sad news today. CPL Philip E. Baucus, age 28, died while serving his country in Anwar province in Iraq Saturday. CPL Baucus was the nephew of Montana Sen. Max Baucus, a Democrat. Sen. Baucus originally voted to authorize military action in 2002, but recently voted in favor of a phased withdrawal from Iraq.

Meanwhile, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, and Daniel Rumsfield never served, despite being of age during the Vietnam War. Neither of the Bush twins have volunteered to serve, nor (to my knowledge) have any of the offspring of Rove, Cheney, or Rumsfield.
Yet Republicans call Murtha, a combat veteran, a “coward” in the halls of Congress, because he questioned the wisdom of the administration’s military policy in Iraq. They also accuse Democrats, in general, of wanting to “duck and run” from Iraq. They threw mud at a combat veteran who ran against Bush in the last election, while daring the news media to report on Bush’s failure to complete his service in the Texas Air National Guard.
Perhaps the symbol of the Republican party should be changed from an Elephant to a ChickenHawk.

Dick Morris was on FOX [Hannity and Colmes] and state CLEARLY Hillary attacked him [“FUCKING JEW BASTARD!”] several times. Dick works as a polling consultant for the Clintons at the time.

Chickenlibs like Reid, Schumer and Feingold weasel out of serving then turn around and stab our troops in the back. GIVE ME A BREAK!
Rumsfield thinks he’s a modern-day Metternicht, but its pretty clear that much of the modern mess in the Gulf region is due to his incompetence, dating back to his days in the Ford and Reagan administrations. He’s quick to send in troops to try to fix problems he created by trying to play both sides of the fence for too long (i.e., arming both Iran and Iraq at the same time). He sent troops into Iraq without preparing the proper groundwork (i.e., assuming Turkey would allow us to launch and offensive from their territory, without bothering to confirm this with them in advance), and ignored and side-lined generals who warned him he didn’t have enough boots on the ground to properly occupy the country. Then when the Iraqi government army collapsed and its armories were open for weeks to any looter who could cart off as much as he could carry, Rumsfield claimed “no one could know” this would happen. Yea, like Bush claiming that “no one could know” of the devestation that would be caused by Katrina, despite warnings for years previously.
For decades the Army has been warning that our troops should avoid at all costs getting involved in urban warfare, especially in a city the size of Iraq. That is one of the reasons Bush I refused to carry the first Gulf War into Iraq. But Rumsfield chose to assume the best-case scenario, that we would be greeted with flowers and the overwhelming love of the Iraqi people, rather than take a more realistic approach that even a cursory history of Iraq (especially during years of British control) would have revealed.
He sent Humvees, which are really nothing more than big jeeps, into an urban warfare environment for which they were proven to be poorly suited in Somalia, some ten years previously. Soldiers had to use “hillbilly armour” to try to make up for the lack of armored vehicles, while Rumsfield denied that there was a problem, until he was forced to finally work on armoring the Humvees when confronted by a question at a press conference by a National Guard soldier from Tennessee.
A competent Secretary of Defense would have told the President that they didn’t have the troops available to fight in Afganistan and Iraq at the same time without a major increase in troop strength, which would include re-instituting the draft. He didn’t want to do this for political purposes, so he chose to believe the “rosy scenario” instead.
Rumsfield, who avoided service in Vietnam to go right into a government job at the White House during the Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush I and Bush II administrations, is an example of incompetence being rewarded by promotion in the Republican administrations.
This is not the kind of support our servicemen and women need. Showing up at a mess hall in Iraq to eat a meal with the troops while the camera is rolling is a poor substitute for competence and caring. The reality is that he cares more for his own career and priviledges of position than he does for the troops under his care.
And please note: “Supporting our Troops” is not the same thing as “Supporting Administration Policies”. I thought we had gotten rid of that a long time ago, when post-Vietnam we realized that blaming the troops for the Administration’s policies was a mistake. We started off okay in this war – supporting our troops regardless of how we felt about the wisdom of the war – but now the Bush administration, for partison political purposes, has again tried to equate “supporting our troops” onto “supporting the Bush administration”, by labeling anyone who disagrees with him as “not supporting our troops”. Its very bad public policy, because in the end its the troops that suffer. I finally had to remove the yellow ribbon off my car, because it has become equated with supporting Bush, rather than the troops. I’m looking for a bumber sticker which adequately makes the distinction.
Correction: “City the size of Iraq” should obviously be “City the size of Baghdad”.
