Yes, I realize that this is a serious issue, and isn’t filled with vile hatred towards other Americans, but how about covering this as much as you did the dog food contamination? Why not call the Seattle Firefighters Union and ask them to describe what happens when a Firefighter gets injured, on the job, with an injury that ends his working career (not just firefighting, I mean working). Short answer? We get screwed. Why? Because we have to do something outside the accepted practice of our job. Running into burning buildings is our an accepted practice of our job.
There is a firefighter,in this area, that is going to need a lifetime of medical coverage, due to a documented injury that happened while on duty. He will lose his health care coverage and benefits later this year. He will not qualify for Social Security (we are exempt and do not pay into Social Security). The city and state will not cover him and his L & I benefits will be around $100,000. He isn’t the first and won’t be the last.

And in most states, there is an exception to the lawsuit immunity if the employer was grossly negligent or intentionally caused the worker’s injuries.

Was this firefighter in Bellevue? There is no social security for municipal employees in Bellevue. I think the City and the employee each pay 6.2% into a private pension fund of some sort. It doesn’t have anything like the social welfare component of social security to help those workers who are less fortunate. A higher paid employee who lives long and doesn’t get disabled early makes out much better under the Bellevue system, than under social security. A lower paid employee, or someone who dies early, or someone who gets disabled, does much worse under the Bellevue system than under social security.
But if this firefighter needs medical care for the rest of his life due to occupational injury, wouldn’t Labor and Industries medical benefits cover this at least?

The Washington State LEOFF 2 system is the 2nd worst firefighter pension system in the US, so you are partially correct. One other state has it worse off than us.

The problem with ordinary negligence, is it the simple fact that we are not in an ordinary profession. Running into a burning building is not a normal 9-5 job. In fact, as a direct result of our profession, we have a higher rate of Cancer, Stroke and Cardiac Conditions. Our life expectancy is on average 10 years younger than the general population. We have NO Disability retirement. Our retirement is based on a 2% multiplier per year. Our min age to retire is 53. The firefighter I was referring to is in Seattle, and has around 7 years in. So, he gets 14% of the average of his last 5 years of employment. Then, the State Actuarially reduces his pension for every year under the age of 53. (This was not the Case with the LEOFF Plan 1 which ended in 1977)
In the early 80’s, a firefighter named Miriam Grey was severely injured in a fire. A dog attacked him and he was burned. Since he was on probation, he only had about a year in. Last we heard, he gets a check from the LEOFF retirement system of around $10.00 (Yes, thats TEN dollars) per month. His L &I and Medicare doesn’t cover jack.
Once again, back to the firefighter I referring to. He will get a 1 time payout of around $100,000 from L&I and then nothing. All medical and everything is on his own after that (Since you guys want to make this a political issue, these very items have been introduced in the Democratic controlled legislature several times, but never passed out of committee. Apparently, the way that one bill was written, a Firefighter injured on the job could potentially receive up to 110% of the regular benefits. This would happen only in extremely rare cases though, and would actually be for only work ending injuries).

That’s the kicker, no he won’t. He will receive the payout and nothing more after that, and no, he is not from Bellevue. But most firefighters in the State of Washington don’t pay into Social Security. We are exempt, and that goes all the way back to the inception of Social Security, becuase we are on a public pension. I have earned enough credits to qualify for it, but again, because I am on a public Pension, my bennies are reduced drastically.

I am in favor of the Democratic controlled State Legislature doing the right thing, and incorporating a Disability Retirement (Paid for the same way all of of other benefits with the member contributing the most followed by the city then the state) for Firefighters and Police Officers. I can actually understand where you’re coming from. I have 4 firefighters in my family and my wife’s, one of whom was diagnosed with PTSD after the events of a particularly gruesome and horrifying day’s work. I won’t give you the details, they’re a little too much. I have no real idea how the cost of his treatments and/or therapy was handled, all I know for sure is he was pretty messed up for a while. Another was forced to retire early due to injury, if I remember correctly, it happened when I was only about 6 or 7. I don’t really care how governments arrange it, but those of us who serve our communities DO deserve better. I can deal with paying more in taxes if it meant they got better benefits.
And it suddenly reminds me of how the Chimp-in-Charge has cut VA funding…….

I am asking that the State Legislature incorporate a Disability Retirement program, under the current LEOFF 2 plan, that the members would pay the most cost for. This isn’t a bigger Government issue. The structure is already there. The members pay the majority of the money. This is about ensuring that if I get injured in the Line of Duty (i.e. a building flashes and I get burned so bad I can’t work any job) that I am not going to get a monthly check from the LEOFF Pension system for $10.00 per month and a one time payout of $100,000, to live on and support my family. Because if that’s the case, then what happens if firefighters stop going into burning buildings?

2. Lee Harvey Oswald died there shortly after
3. Jack Ruby-who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, died there a few years later..by coincidence

A recent patient survey indicated that 70 percent of the women who gave birth at Parkland in the first three months of 2006 were illegal immigrants.That’s 11,200 anchor babies born every year just in Dallas According to the article, the hospital spent $70.7 million delivering 15,938 babies in 2004 but managed to end up with almost $8 million dollars in surplus funding. Medicaid kicked
in $345 million, Dallas County taxpayers kicked in $31.3 million and the feds tossed in another $95 million.
The average patient in Parkland ‘s maternity wards is 25 years old, married and giving birth to her second child. She is an illegal immigrant. By law, pregnant women cannot be denied medical care based on their immigration status or ability to pay.
OK, fine That doesn’t mean they should receive better care than everyday, middle-class American citizens. But at Parkland Hospital, they do.

The Dallas Morning News article followed a Hispanic woman who was a patient at one of the clinics and pregnant with her third child—her previous two were also born at Parkland. Her first two deliveries were free and the Mexican native was grateful because it would have cost $200 to have them in Mexico. This time, the hospital wants her to pay $10 per visit and $100 for the delivery but she was unsure if she could come up with the money. Not that it matters, the hospital won’t turn her away. (I wonder why they even bother asking at this point.)

Well, another subject of the article was born at Parkland in 1986 shortly after her mother entered the U.S. illegally—now she is having her own child there as well (That’s right, she’s technically a U.S. citizen.) An American citizen would have to provide a social security number which would reveal their annual income—an illegal immigrant need only claim to be poor and the hospital must take them at their word.

So my question is this: Does our public medical care system treat illegal immigrants better than American citizens? Yes it does!
As I mentioned, the care I have received is perfectly adequate but it’s bare bones, meat and potato medical care—not top of line.
Their (the illegals) medical care is free—simply because they are illegal immigrants? Once again, there is no way to verify their income.
Parkland Hospital offers indigent care to Dallas County residents who earn less than $40,000 per year. (They also have to prove that they did not refuse health coverage at their current job. Yeah, the ‘free’ care is not so easy for Americans.)
There are about 140 patients who received roughly $4 million dollars for un-reimbursed medical care. As it turns out, they did not qualify for free treatment because they resided outside of Dallas County So the hospital is going to sue them! Illegals get it all free! But U.S citizens who live outside of Dallas County get sued! How stupid is this?
As if that isn’t annoying enough, the illegal immigrant patients are actually complaining about hospital staff not speaking Spanish. In this AP story, the author speaks with a woman who is upset that she had to translate comments from the hospital staff into Spanish for her husband. The doctor was trying to explain the situation to the family and the mother was forced to translate for her husband who only spoke Spanish. This was apparently a great injustice to her.
In an attempt to create a Spanish-speaking staff, Parkland Hospital is now providing incentives in the form of extra pay for applicants who speak Spanish. Additionally, medical students at the University of Texas Southwestern for which Parkland Hospital is the training facility will now have a Spanish language requirement added to their already jammed-packed curriculum. No other school in the country boasts such a ridiculous multi-semester (multicultural) requirement.
If you think the current proposed “solution” to the immigration problem is wrong, do something about It! Contact your U.S. Senator and House Representative and tell them
to fix the border first, no amnesty, no reward for breaking our law.
Otherwise, we’ll get what no response from us deserves– immigration chaos and exploding costs for illegals that you will pay.

Isn’t my fault either, the State Dems created LEOFF 2, not the Repubs. And I am not sure why or how you think that our pension is comparable to others in the State. Do you mean to tell me that a Teacher, standing behind a desk for 30 years has the same medical issues as a firefighter going into burning buildings and being exposed to cancer causing toxins on a regular basis are the same? When was the last time you picked up a 400 pound patient (3 days ago for me)? As we get older in our career, we don’t get automatic desk jobs or promote. There are a limited number of these positions available.
So you tell me Roger, what other State job has an equal pension and an equal job. You can’t find a single one. Why? Because Firefighters and Police have a different type of job. The expectation is that the 400 pound patient gets into the back of the ambulance no matter how old or the medical problems of that firefighter. The kicker, we still do it with a smile and haven’t become bitter partisan hacks, like you and goldy.
Oh yeah, and YOS and Goldy are Both CHEAP LABOR LIBERALS!!!!!!!!!! Goldy is a scab and YOS wants to replace union firefighters with Vollys.
