    Very iinteresting about Governor Hickenlooper, coming around on marijuana legalization. I remember he was very opposed to the ballot measure. A free weeks ago when the RTD was opening the line to DIA, one of the people the reporter in an article talked to, a budtender.

    @3 I know I shouldn’t say this, but here goes. Many, many laws have been thrown out by courts for being a violation of people’s rights. Laws have also been repealed because they were more destructive than helpful. See alcohol prohibition under that category. And laws that are blatantly enforced by race fall under both categories. In the Uber/Lyft world cabbies would be harmed, but society in general would benefit by greater competition, larger numbers of available vehicles to provide transport, and probably a cleaner means of transportation if you subscribe (I do) to the concept that hybrid vehicles being used for this purpose nearly exclusively make good sense.

    Yes, there will be the occasional evil Uber driver who harms a passenger (just as the occasional cabbie does), but we see teachers preying on children with some regularity as well, and yet y’all continue to advocate for more money for teachers, and look the other way while unions provide cover for the incompetent ones.

    Cleaner vehicle emissions, greater numbers of service providers enabling people to be more mobile, and lower costs due to competition are bad………..

    Why, exactly?

    That’s why you bother. When one moves beyond the knee-jerk reaction of Goldy protecting his buddies in an industry approaching obsolescence, there’s actually a story with two sides to it.     And let me add another thing regarding legalization. Bernie Sanders is going around California supporting legalization. This could be a game changer for him. And it highlights one of the things I find so disturbing about the Democratic leadership. Any laws so unabashedly enforced unjustly by race should compel them to call for it’s repeal. To not do so is a dereliction of duty to the people of this country. Their cowardice is one of the reasons they are so unpalatable. Clinton should show some courage and call for repeal of prohibition. Clearly, that’s where we are heading and she should show some leadership.

    The problem is not so much the law but how people abuse powers at the excuse of being able to because it is the law. I don’t think that statement applies to everything or every law but for example I am not so much against the government performing servailance or listening to phone calls FOR THE PURPOSE OF FIGHTING TERRORISM. But I do have a problem with it when you think that it will or could lead to someone enforcing the laws (or government) abuses what it is intended for and say they start keeping track of people who smoke pot based on a persons private conversation. I see the problem with the government listening to our phone calls but I also think that it can be effective in stopping a terrorist attack. The issue is when someone abuses their power and it co flicks with people’s freedoms – too bad they just won’t use it to fight terrorists.

    I personally don’t care if people smoke pot or smoking is legal but I don’t think that there are no negative aspects with people smoking pot. Such as with liquor it is legal and there are drawbacks – drunks that loiter in cities, drunks and domestic violence, drunk drivers, liver cancer and other liver ailments caused by alchahol. I am not equating any of those things to smoking pot, but I’m sure there are one or two things bad with smoking pot – like being to mellow or getting the munchies.

    @7 Still there is a big difference here between the Uber situation than the marijuana issue. For the most part the Uber/taxi issue is a civil one. While a gypsy driver could be charged and actually go to jail that’s a very unlikely outcome and most likely a driver will be fined and the cities coffers will be larger. It will be treated as a civil matter.
    Marijuana though has been a criminal issue. It’s a reasonable question to ask about how much money has the State and Counties of Colorado and Washington saved. There should be some savings. Though the independent actions of some Sheriff Departments and actions by the Federal government maybe decreasing the total savings. There is also the issue that drug dealers don’t just deal in one form of drug.
    The drug policies of the United States do have a strong racial bias. In their creation and in their implementation. Some of it is clearly intentional, but a great deal is unintentional. Having to do more with society dealing with poor people, and the greater resources the state uses in urban environments. The county and that counties population may work to an offenders advantage and disadvantage. There are more judges in King county than Whatcom county, but all of the judges have far more cases than the judges do here.
    It’s unfair of you to mix in teachers in this referring to the fact that occassionally three will be a bad person driving for Uber as there are occasional bad people who are taxi drivers. So you end up mentioning teachers and teachers unions. Yet you don’t mention the fact that children sometimes pray on teachers…certainly at a number greater than vice versa. Of course this is one reason teachers have unions. The also have unions because in the past school boards could and did fire teachers for no or for bad reasons. Teaching evolution for example. Can happen today, but the board is going to have some fun times with the Union and the public.
    You have not mentioned that using taxi’s is about class. Are we becoming a more class stratified society? Why not consider the possibility that we all walk or use only public transportation in our great cities. That there should be limited or no need to use a taxi or Uber service. Do true American’s take taxis? Should it be un American to take such a service. Or only if we are going to insure the service is extended to the poor, the destitute. sick and most downtrodden among us. Is there a taxi stand outside police headquarters? The city jail? Why not? Don’t citizens deserve transportation home or to work from these locations? Why aren’t these citizens being served by taxi drivers and companies holding those coveted medallions? Do gypsy drivers pick up from those locations. Perhaps we should expect our boys in blue to serve the public by providing these folks transportation.

    There is of course the issue as to how Seattle enforces the law. It’s unlikely the city or county will go after a carpool, but technically isn’t a car pool in violation or could be depending on how it’s set up. It could be a carpool with a generous driver that some would call a stupid mark. Or some money could be trading hands that would put the carpool in violation of the law. The riders should be taking cabs to work. Or should they? Gypsy cabs have existed and will continue to exist in Seattle and most drivers will skirt the law. Uber or something like Uber is just a new took in their kit, and one that works well. Most of these drivers are more egalitarian than taxi companies.

    Then again Seattle could choose to have a red light district, but does not so the activities in many districts. And the use of modern technology makes enforcing the law a challenge, and a drain on city resources. I have not seen you support a red light district or support the sex trade, though your economic argument should fully support such endeavors.

    Now bankers have always been robbers with their fountain pens. It takes a lot of resources and political will to go after them. They are a lot more reluctant to plead out, and actually have lawyers.
    Enforcing some law like anti-monopoly requires political will and resources. Bankers and their friends have managed to reduce the political will ($300,000 per speech might cause a downtick in political will) and reducing resources (no money to pay for inspectors, auditors, ect) or stating money can’t be used to hire inspectors or to enforce some portion of the law.

    @14 I’m a realist and I believe people are people. I believe people in the government have the propensity to abuse their power. That government will abuse it’s power. Government power must be curbed. It’s far more likely that the government will use information it uses to arrest someone at the border brining in some pot, ivory, porn, ect based on information gleaned through information the government received through surveilling your phone calls, messages ect than stopping terrorists.
    Can one prove such things. Ask the journalists stopped at the border who are held for hours, searched, luggage gone through, lap top examined, ect. Go to Russia and interview that fellow in Moscow secretly and oddly somehow get stopped before coming into the US and asked questions that have to be based on information that could only have come from a phone call or e mail.
    The basis of our bill of rights is to curtail government power. Apparently those who argued for it’s creation were correct that people rights must be protected by curtailing government power.

    @16 Though the intentions were good. Opium, cocaine, heroin, ect never should have been made illegal. And yes it’s liberals that did so with religious people and some others on the right. Then they moved on to the real target alcohol. That didn’t go so well.     @17 Of course part of it is our society is unwilling to treat teen agers as human beings who also have rights. There is a legitimate argument that a teacher should never have sex with a student. Of course this applies to college professors even if the professor is 60 and the student is 58. Unless they are already lovers because of the power dynamics under western thought a teacher having sex with a student is always wrong. Greek thought is a lot more forgiving in this as it was not wrong for a teacher to have sex with his students in the gymnasium whose purpose was not just one of book learning education. Of course they had different thoughts on the whole gay sex thing as well.

    The bottom line is often we are not talking about children in these situations, but teen agers who may be very much willing participants. Even in some cases the seducer.

    The bottom line is teen agers are interested in sex, having sex, ect. They should be able to pick their sexual partners and consent to sex. The challenge is parents. If teens are merely property of their parents then parents should be able to rule totally in this area. The school and society should enforce this parental ownership to the hilt. Lovers of someone’s teen should be put to death as well the teen for going against their parents authority. This should remain the case until the child is 25 years of age. Employment, religion, and drinking ect should be treated the same way.
    Or maybe teens have rights and should be able to exercise their right to consent. This does not mean that teachers should have sex with someone who is their student. It may mean we have to judge these cases individually and look at who is involved, and perhaps insist they act fully on their feeling and immediately marry or some other outcome than simply jail. These outcomes maybe more beneficial for the individuals involved and society. Of course this is more work than how the current law works which creates all kinds of weirdness. It’s absurd that a young woman can whore herself out at 16 and not be punished but if she’s doing it at 18 can be prosecuted for the crime she’s been doing for two years. Whether that crime is with teachers or not.

    Also for some reason when rock and roll or other musicians or entertainers screw some young teen of either sex they are rarely prosecuted. Particularly when the teen says I wanted to do the nasty with them. Definite double standard here. Marsha don’t do Mr. Stanley, but it’s cool if you do that Ziggy Starfish fellow.

They are no more and no less capable of governance and trampling peoples rights whether for good or evil means. Our Constitution puts limits on government power that all three branches should uphold though the courts must be our guarantee of our rights.
