Several weeks ago there was a thread posted on HA that discussed a fairly reasonable-sounding range of medical insurance premium increases in WA state.
It seems that isn’t going to be a uniformly positive event elsewhere. There are a few more residents of NY than WA, BTW:
Insurance firms participating in New York’s ObamaCare health exchange are seeking double-digit hikes for patient medical premiums in 2015, new figures reviewed by The Post reveal.
The average hike sought by insurers for individual plans is 12 percent—but a number of firms serving large numbers of patients want to boost individual premiums by nearly 20 percent.
Leading the charge is Excellus Health Plan, which is seeking to sock more than 24,000 customers with a 19.7 percent hike.
The even larger MVP Health Plan, with nearly 33,000 customers, is seeking a 19 percent boost.
While a number of smaller plans put in for lesser increases or, in a number of cases, decreases, Health Republic Insurance of New York — the largest on the exchange with more than 68,000 members — requested a 15.2 percent increase for individual plans.

The risk corridor might be pretty wide, and those additional costs that are supposed to be covered by the government will likely be very substantial. Some of it will be known before the 2014 elections. A lot of it will still be very apparent as 2016 comes into focus.

I’m sure the NEA will be much happier in 2017 when President Walker appoints Michelle Rhee.
Delegates to the National Education Association’s annual convention passed a new business item July 4 calling for U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to resign.
The surprising move comes on the heels of union anger over moves across the United States to revise due-process protections, tenure, and seniority—some of which have been supported by Democrats, including the Obama administration.
Proposed by the union’s powerful California affiliate, the item cites “the Department’s failed education agenda focused on more high-stakes testing, grading and pitting public school students against each other based on test scores” as its rationale for demanding the secretary’s resignation.

“Earlier this year, Laura and I learned we will become grandparents this summer. Our children have been the greatest blessing of our lives and we welcome our grandchild as a joyous addition to our family. Our daughter now faces a more challenging future than her peers. She has our unconditional love and support. Of course, because she didn’t take the pill, she’s no slut like those other girls.”

@16 Hey wingnuts, sex happens, get over it!
Roger Rabbit spews:
Sex, of course, is a voluntary act. No one is required to have sex. Military conscription, on the other hand, is involuntary. If you fail to report, you go to prison and are brand a felon for the rest of your life. Thus, you are not required to enjoy having sex, but you are required to die in wars dreamed up by other people (whose own children usually are exempted from fighting in them). Go figure how people who expect you to sacrifice your life in their wars also abstain from having sex, when neither they nor their children fight in wars or abstain from sex. In my opinion, the best thing to do with people like that is toss them off the nearest cliff.*
* Just kidding. That’s an Ann Coulter joke.**
** I have it from good authority that Ann Coulter neither fights in Republican wars nor abstains from sex.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Who said this?
“I see something that frankly doesn’t surprise me: 47 percent of all Americans pay no federal income tax. I’m guessing that most of you in this room are not in that 47 percent—God bless you—but what that tells me is that we’ve got almost half the population perfectly happy that somebody else is paying the bill, and most of that half is you all. I submit to you that there is a political strategy to get slightly over half and have a permanent ruling majority by keeping over half of the population dependent on the largesse of government that somebody else is paying for.”
If you answered “Mitt Romney,” you’re wrong; the speaker was Rep. Bob Beauprez (R-CO) back in 2010. It appears Romney plagiarized his now-infamous “47 percent” remark from a fellow idiot Republican.
http://www.motherjones.com/moj.....47-percent
Roger Rabbit Commentary: I don’t want to beat on a dead horse. We all know the “47 percent” remark is idiotic on multiple levels. For starters, the 47 percent includes Social Security recipients, who are simply getting back their own money they paid in FICA taxes. And even people who don’t owe federal income tax pay other taxes. And as long as we’re counting corporations as “people,” you can add to the list of non-federal-income-tax-payers many of America’s largest corporations, including Boeing.
The theme being peddled by Romney, Beauprez, and others who think like them is that wealthy people support the whole country and the rest of us are just freeloaders. The truth is the reverse: Workers create all of the wealth, and the wealthy live well on the backs of the workers they employ, underpay, and overtax. No rich person pays the effective tax rate on income that the average middle class wage earner does. Tax lawyers and tax accountants, and well-heeled lobbyists, make sure they don’t.
But that doesn’t stop the rich, and their paid mouthpieces, from playing the victimhood game. Listening to them gives you the impression that being wealthy is the worst gig there is. Until you ask them if they’re willing to trade places with any wage earner they care to name. Take it from me, Roger Rabbit, HA’s most outspoken capitalist, working is the worst way of getting money there is. I made $2380 in the stock market this Thursday for doing absolutely nothing. That sure beats fighting through commuter traffic, putting up with pushy bosses, and doing hard and dirty work for $15 an hour.
And when it comes to paying taxes, believe me, us capitalists have never had it so good. The legal tax rate on most of my income ranges between 0% to 10%. I’m a bloodsucking leech, alright, but not because I get Social Security — that’s simply a return of the FICA taxes I paid during my working years. Being a capitalist is what makes me a bloodsucker. Being capitalists is what makes the rich bloodsuckers, too. Workers aren’t bloodsuckers. The GOP has that completely backwards.
But then, what doesn’t the GOP have backwards? And why would anyone vote for such bass-ackwards morons?

@21 – I’m not necessarily opposed to a flat tax. But I think it hurts the poor more than the rich. And I know under what Rick Perry was proposing when he was running for president that I personally would have had to pay more in taxes than the present structure (using 100,000 dollar salary). So I guess there kind of needs to be a reason to make a change. And regardless, the government should take in what they need to, to balance a budget. What is your reasoning for flat tax?

Was on or near trains propelled by three different sources of power. Diesel(Amtrak), electric(MAX, Portland Streetcar, and LINK), and since I made a quick visit to the Oregon Rail Heritage Center, steam. Saw SP 4449 and S.P.and S 700 in various stages of being worked on. Thought it would be hard to find, but they ate right next to the temporary terminus of the Central Loop streetcar line, which in about 14 months will be a loop.

The Free Democrats, the traditional coalition partners of the CDU/CSU, failed to win the 5% to win any seats, and the negotiations with the Green Party went nowhere, and Merkel will not negotiate with The Left Party, so that left the Social Democrats, and one of their conditions was this piece of legislation. I was bored yesterday so I cross referenced some the names of the bills in the link you posted with lots of co sponsors, to reviews and summaries of the bills that could easily be found on line.
For example….
3. H.R.45 : To repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and health care-related provisions in the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.....e_Care_Act
“The bill H.R. 45 (long title: To repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and health care-related provisions in the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010) is a bill that was introduced into the United States House of Representatives in the 113th United States Congress. If enacted, the bill would repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010, commonly referred to as Obamacare.”
– Hummm, wonder why that dies. That’s probably 45 things on the list, right there.
H.R.5 : Student Success Act
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Student_Success_Act
The bill promotes charter schools.[2]
“The Student Success Act did not receive very much support from Democrats. Although many Democrats concurred with Republicans that the No Child Left Behind Act needed to be reformed, they thought that the Student Success Act loosen the standards too much. Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) argued against the bill, because if the Student Success Act becomes law, “state’s wouldn’t even be required to set performance targets based on student growth, proficiency or graduation rates… Effectively, it would allow states to define success down simply to make themselves of their districts look good. Some Democrats also argued against the bill because they feared it would give the states freedom to ignore special needs students, as well as those just starting to learn English”
– Democrats are not easily going to gut Public Education.
H.R.3 : Northern Route Approval Act
“LCV urges you to vote NO on H.R. 3, the Northern Route Approval Act, a dangerous bill that eliminates the requirement for a Presidential Permit to build the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline and automatically approves it. H.R. 3 recklessly eliminates the Administration’s ability to complete adequate safety and environmental impact studies with sufficient public comment. This bill is all the more appalling in light of the Environmental Protection Agency’s recent objections to the State Departments’ deeply flawed environmental analysis.”
http://www.lcv.org/issues/lcv-.....rthern.pdf
– Why doesn’t Canada run this pipeline through Canada if it’s so good?
You cannot expect to post a list of bills you know that progressives won’t agree with and use that as a justification to claim that it’s all the senate democrats fault.
