Sounds like we’ve got troubles with the Saudis. Their embassador suddenly resigns and returns to Saudi Arabia yesterday, saying he “wanted to spend more time with his family”. Today the Saudis announce that if American troops withdraw leaving the Shiites in control of the government of Iraq, they will fund the Sunni insurgency.
Remember, the Saudis warned Bush before the war that they wouldn’t support it, and neither would the Turks, requiring the U.S. had to stage out of Kuwait. The prospect of Iraq becoming a battleground between Saudi-financed Sunis and Iraqi-supported Shiites is one of the reasons why the Saudis and Turks didn’t think the war was a good idea.
In the meantime, Bush seems inclined to ignore the Baker Commission’s report. Today he’s meeting with generals at the Pentagon, in a session chaired by Rumsfield (yes, he’s still there), and the generals will tell the President whatever Rumsfield tells them to tell the President. In the meantime Bush will put off his “change of stratergy” address until January. I don’t know if this is because he’s having a hard time finding people who will tell him what he wants to hear, or if he wants to use the address to control the news cycle of the new Democratic Congress accomplishing more in the first 100 hours than the previous Republican Congress did in two years.
Last month I was convinced that U.S. combat troops would be withdrawing from Iraq by the end of 2007, if only because Republican congressmen were blaming Iraq for all their election losses last November, and they wanted to “clear the decks” before the 2008 elections. Bush was facing a mutiny within his own party. I suspected that this “withdrawal” would largly be a “sleight of hand”, wereby combat troops would be re-named “advisors” or “support troops”, without much real change in their duties, but that some units would be returning home to much public-relations fanfare.
But the whole thing reminds me so much of Vietnam, it is truly depressing. The idea we can get the Syrians and Iranians to cooperate in installing a government friendly to the U.S. in Iraq is a pipe dream. It reminds me of Nixon’s “secret plan” to end the war in Vietnam. Likewise, the idea of gradually turning over combat duties to Iraqi troops is very much like Nixon’s “Vietnamization” program, and putting more troops in now reminds me of Nixon’s invasion of Cambodia and Laos in 1970.
