Wednesday Open Thread

How were the election results for you? I think Biden is going to squeak out a victory but it’s not great that it’s too close to call. In Washington, it’s good. Inslee won as expected. The legislature is secure. Not sure if that means actually progressive legislation.

In fine but not my preferred candidate news, the 10th Congressional District and Lieutenant Governor the more conservative Democrat won the race between2 Democrats. The sex ed initiative is passing easily. King County charter amendments are going for police reform.

Anyway, wash your hands right now.

Most of Washington voters have already voted. But if you haven’t yet, there’s still time. Drop off your ballot at one of these locations by 8:00. Or get it postmarked by tomorrow. If you are putting it in the mail, I would drop it off today if you can.

And in any case, wash your hands right now.

Good morning. Please vote if you haven’t yet. A ton of people in Washington have voted. But if that’s not you, there’s still time. Drop off your ballot by 8:00 on Tuesday or have it postmarked by then. Vote by mail is being screwed over in some states, but in Washington, your ballot should be fine in the mail. You might want to put it in the mail on Monday to be safe.

Anyway, wash your hands right now.

Months into mask requirements, I don’t understand the opposition. It’s slightly annoying, but emphasis on slightly. Some of them are a bit too tight, but you should have found some good ones by now. They aren’t 100% effective, but they are better than not wearing one. They help the person wearing the mask, and everyone they come in contact with.

But fucking Idaho, man. They’re loosening mask requirements. And since they share a border with Washington, their garage can stink up our state. Wear a mask, and require it if you’re a state or local official.

Anyway, in addition to putting on a fucking mask if you’re out, please wash your goddam hands right now.

Good morning, Washingtonians. Have you voted yet? Remember, if you have until November 3 to have your ballot postmarked or dropped off. I have not confirmed it, and I wish I could remember who tweeted it, but hopefully this map is helpful. Otherwise, check your county elections office.

And please wash your hands right now.

Friday Open Thread!

by Carl Ballard — Friday, 10/23/20, 7:39 am

Did you catch the big debate last night? I did. It made me glad that I already voted for Marko Liias. Oh, was there another debate?

Seriously, the Lieutenant Governor debate last night was gloriously dull. It wasn’t too much of a contrast between the bearded monotone Democrats. Heck tried to talk about being an outsider (DC and the private sector) while also touting his time in the legislature and as Booth Gardner’s Chief of Staff. Liias was more focused on his legislative record. Either would be good in the job.

The moderators were less impressive. Maybe there aren’t an hour of questions for the position. Still the first 2 questions were about Republican voters and how will you work with Republicans in the legislature. There was no equivalent question about Democratic voters, despite the fact that we are a lot more of the state.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now.

I hope that the new approach to homeless outreach in Seattle, if it comes to anything, is an improvement. I wish there was more of a solid direction from the mayor’s office. But maybe the relationship is so toxic that it’s better to have surrogates.

Anyway, wash your hands right now.

Great job, King County. We’re smashing all sorts of records for early voting. I don’t know if this presages higher turnout or if it will taper off. Maybe people are worried about the Post Office so they’re dropping their ballots in the boxes rather than the mail?

No matter what, please seal your ballot with a sponge and wash your hands.

Tim Eyman’s latest garbage car tabs initiative is unconstitutional. At this point he must know not to do a multiple issues initiative. Like have a lawyer look it over. Or don’t, since Eyman gets to keep fundraising on the same initiative and agencies get to keep their car tab money.

Anyway, wash your hands right now.

King County is mailing ballots today. So you should get yours within a few days. Same give or take for the rest of the state. So if you don’t have a ballot by next week, you can bug your country official. In King County, you can drop it at one of these boxes. Or mail them.

Anyway, use a sponge instead of linking your envelope. And wash your hands right now.

Open Thread Friday, October 9

by Carl Ballard — Friday, 10/9/20, 7:32 am

I listened to the gubernatorial debate while doing dishes. Now, a day late, here’s my impressions.

Jay Inslee was a bit off his game on a few issues. Western State Hospital desertification in particular. But he was pretty good overall.

Culp was something else. From flirting with conspiracy theories about the wildfires to saying he would have sent the National Guard with guns to the East Precinct protest, Culp was scary. Please don’t vote for him.

And please do wash your hands right now.

Are you ready for debates tonight? Well tough shit, we’re going to have Vice Presidential and gubernatorial debates. I already know who I am voting for, but I will probably tune in. Will Culp manage to sell himself in any way, or if he comes across as awful as his policies.

But before the debates, in fact right now, you should go wash your hands.

It’s not medieval or early modern Europe. You can notice that the leader is sick. And that it’s still possibly deadly. Nobody wants the President to die,but jeez, he might be dying.

As of yesterday, Metro Transit and the Water Taxi are charging fares again. I know the agencies need money. But this, while the pandemic is still raging. I haven’t ridden the bus since the start of the pandemic. So I don’t know, are people now bunching up at the door?

Anyway, go wash your hands right now.

Boeing haven’t confirmed it yet, but it looks like they are going to move all 787 production out of Everett. These sorts of moves were probably inevitable as Boeing have shown that breaking the union is their biggest goal.

Still and all, if it isn’t replaced with something, it won’t be good. If not for the pandemic, I wouldn’t be too worried about a return of the will the last person to leave Seattle turn out the lights era. The regional economy is more diverse than it was then. But it is the pandemic. And there aren’t too many good jobs for people without a college education.

In any event, wash your hands right now.
